arraigned on two charges on friday during his first court appearance. our sacramento affiliate did speak with the police chief of the police department when deangelo work there during the late 1970s. he says he wasn't the one that hired joseph deangelo but he did fire him for shopliftings a hammer and dog repellant. prior to the decision to fire him there were no red flags. deangelo blended in when he was working there. as police continue to look for a path in the east area rapist case, the former chief says he's ready to see justice served. >> this person has brought so much misery into lives, finally going to for what he's done. >> we mentioned east area rapist suspect will be back in court

this morning. cameras were not allowed in yesterday's hearing but his attorney most anxious to block him from blocking dna fingerprints and taking photos of his body claiming it was approved before deangelo was arrested and arraigned. the search warrant is not testimonial in nature. live, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> thanks, pete. this case is now getting the hollywood treatment. the best selling book credited with helping coin golden state killer's name will become a series on hbo. michelle mcnamara wrote the book but died before she finished it. her husband worked with a co-writer to finally complete it and publish it earlier this year. >> 5:03, a bombshell rocking the white house. president trump just tweeted within the last hour that he approved paying $130 to stormy

daniels but denies the affair. here is one of his tweets we're watching for. chris pollone live in washington. chris, this story really changes by the minute here. >> it really dischoes. it's hard to keep up. good morning marcus and laura. after the president said he did make a payment a couple weeks ago or know where the money came from, now one of president trump's attorneys is saying president trump paid back the guy who paid off stormy daniels one of the newest members of president trump's legal team rudolph giuliani on fox news channel's hannity. >> having something to do with paying stormy daniels woman $130,000, which is going to turn out to be perfectly legal. >> reporter: admitting the president paid back $130,000 to his personal attorney michael cohen, money paid to adult film actress stormy daniels just before the 2016 election. cohen said it came out of his

own pocket. just last month the president denied even knowing about the payment. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to toestormy daniels? no. >> reporter: now he claims it was settled. >> she claims it was hush money, said she had an affair in 2006. trump denied allegations of an affair. but the settlement with damages a proposed campaign law violation for the campaign. >> it's not campaign money. no campaign finance violation. >> reporter: daniels attorney among money stunned. >> i hope american people upon hearing this and watching that clip, they should be outraged. >> the white house declined to comment referring questions to outside counsel. there was some confusion after rudy giuliani's interview last

night. he claimed that the president only found out about the stormy daniels agreement within the last couple of weeks after that scene on "air force one" when he said he didn't know anything about it. he said he had been paying cohen back over the course of last year in several installments. the question is if he didn't know about it, why was he paying him. this morning the president, as you mentioned marcus, tweeting several times, very lengthy tweets, saying cohen was on reta retainer. he was his personal attorney, paid through personal funds and the president claims he did not know cohen was undertaking this agreement with stormy daniels. he was just simply paying him like he usually does. that's essentially the gist of those tweets. live in washington, i'm chris pollo pollone. let's go back to you in the bay area. >> thank you very much, chris. here in the bay area two former santa clara county jail guards found not guilty. networkry news reported jurors acquitted the guards of assault following accusations made by

garcia in 2015. garcia claimed guards severely beat him about a month before the beating death-of-michael tyree by three other guards. garcia has a long criminal record. jurors took about four hours to reach their verdict. >> 5:07, it's a problem we're all dealingw the rising cost to live in the pay area, that housing crisis deepening particularly in the bay area according to a new study released this morning. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us with a look at some of the data that points to the reason why. good morning, kris. >> good morning, laura and marcus. it might seem like there's construction all around the bay area. this is a brand-new housing complex that seems to have gone up overpass in san jose. turns out population boom outpacing a construction boom in the bay area. take a look at this graph that shows the population change in

20 2016. more than 34,000 people left california all together largely because of the high housing cost and other pressures. the bay area in the meantime added 2,000 more people. but in the five years before that, the whole state added only 171 homes for every 1,000 people. we have reported previously on the near zero inventory of homes in some san jose neighborhoods. a lot of folks coming to the bay area, they are being able to buy because they are drawn by high-paying tech jobs. salaries, though, on the low end of the spectrum have only gone up 17% over the last 10 years. those are the folks who are being pushed out. california has the highest home prices of any state with a median home price higher than the national. this data coming from a san francisco nonprofit public policy group. these are a lot of numbers to digest over coffee this morning. so i will post them on social

hey, it's thursday. right now 5:13. let's take a look at the forecast for cupertino. we'll start out with a few clouds and then see it clearing out and warming up, too. warming up from the 50s to the low 70s today. it's going to be a nice one. what are you going to do today? we'll talk about the weekend, too. that's coming up in five minutes. >> the commute through san jose. no surprises. a good number of people thinking about that weekend, kari. looking at 101, show you a broader look at your commute as it shapes up. >> a very happy thursday to you. shares in san jose paypal falling after amazon said it would essentially pay retailers to use amazon pay instead of other payment methods like paypal online. tesla is the one to watch. after the bell, after these numbers were frozen into place, tesla got on the phone with reporters and analyst toss talk about the company's financials.

elon musk was down right rude on the call. enforcers are worried tesla does not have enough money to both build cars and pay off its debt. tesla posted its worst quarterly loss in history. now, when asked very reasonable questions about how tesla was going to keep building cars and make money doing so, musk said things like, excuse me, next, next. boring, bonehead questions are not cool. and, "these questions are so dry, they are killing me." for the hundreds of thousands of americans who have given tesla a deposit on a car they haven't been able to buy, those aren't boring questions at all. most question tesla will be profitable when they build 5,000 models, more than double what they are making now. even if you somehow swallowed the idea tesla could make a p --

5,000 a week, their battery factory can't make 5,000 a week. tesla makes promises wall street does not believe. as they wrap up facebook conference, cambridge analytica is filing bankruptcy. that's the company facebook users were targeted. cambridge analytica may be bankrupt but we haven't heard the last of cambridge analytica. washington and london still -- >> definitely. everybody knows that name now. >> thanks, scott. all right. so small business in oakland, they are expected to get a boost from the foundation created by bay area bank. san francisco home bank loan created what it calls quality jobs fund. that fund providing $300 million investment to bay area group offering money to bay area

businesses. the group expects to generate thousands of jobs paragraph 5:16, common sight on san francisco streets may be in the past if city leaders listen to new recommendations made by consultants hired by mta. consultants say the city has a glut of cabs that just can't compete with ride share companies. according to examiner they will cut taxis by a third. find 20% of taxi medallion holders are making a sustainable income. >> 5:17. would you pay a teenager to pay attention on the road? a new study from university of pennsylvania say teens would be more likely to text -- less likely to text, i should say, while driving if someone paid them to stop. they say cheaper insurance might be a good incentive. many say they would give up e-mails and texting behind the wheel so long as they could play

then as we head spinto the restf the forecast we will see more sunshine as we take a look at campbell. a look at all of our high temperatures for today, expecting south bay to reach up to 75 degrees. for ooegs bay 77 east bay, 77. cool temperatures along the coast, san mateo 62, san francisco 61 and mission district and 73 today in novato. so our hiking trail forecast for the east bay, we will start out with a cool morning and a few clouds passing by, but it will be clearing out by 10:00. lots of sunshine and also hitting up to the upper 70s today. once again we talked about the cool coastline if you're going to half moon bay. it's only going to be in the low- to mid-50s for much of the day. we will start to see some sun start to peek out. if you're planning to make it a beach weekend, it's going to be

we hope to get some more answers after a deadly military plane crash in georgia yesterday. investigators are still at the site of the crash. this is new video overnight. authorities roped off debris field and closed a highway. nine military members are dead. happening again in berkeley. thieves going after laptops in cafes. this morning police are not only looking for suspects but two key witnesses who tried to stop the robbery. video of that man trying to steal the laptop on monday at the cafe. next to cal campus. you can see the suspect grabbing that computer. the two people jumped in and detained that man. another suspect ran up and hit one of the good samaritans in the head. both of those men got away. some people that we actually spoke to were shaken up by what happened. >> i'm surprised that it would happen here right next to campus but it's not totally out of character for berkeley. >> and we have been reporting

that there have been several laptop thefts in recent months in berkeley one person was shot trying to fight back. >> former secretary of state and stanford provost condoleezza rice is stepping into the latest kanye controversy. kanye west made a surprise appearance this week on tmz. he implied african-americans made a choice to suffer 400 years of slavery. rice appeared on fox business news. she said she supports his right to express himself. people should never assume they know someone's mind based on pa person's race. west tried to comment saying he hoped black people would not feel mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. coming up, late night. fremont school board talk sex ed for hours on the curriculum. a scam east bay community is warning people about. -live look-

the entire area shows a smooth drive. highway 37 a little slowing around the island, typical at vallejo, back-up at the bay bridge. we move south we don't see problems on the maps for speed sensors, a nice smooth flow of traffic over there. talking about fremont and taking up late for a meeting. you're going to talk about that. >> it was a marathon meeting. going to be very tired people in fremont today. vote on controversial sex ed curriculum finished at 2:30 this morning. we put a crew in that meeting overnight so we can update you. >> bob redell talked to people before that meeting. bob, how long did this meeting go? >> reporter: ten hours, marcus and laura, unified board meeting met at district headquarters starting at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. as you mentioned, they didn't finish until their final vote at 2:30. that's 10 hours. a clerk who has been on the

board a number of years said she had never seen a meeting here run this long. there were a lot of parents who had a lot to say. within the past few hours, the board did vote 3-2 not to offer sex ed for fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders. they don't believe what they had proposed was compliant with state law. the district will offer a compliant vrgs for students seven through nine. one trustee told us he believes the majority of parents do want sex ed for their children but the issue over what specifically should be taught. three rs, right, respect, responsibility, which contained topics too explicit and not age appropriate for students four through six. we heard from one parent who thought proposed discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity could erode family values. one mom does not agree and is disappointed the board voted no. >> there was a lot of pressure

a powerful dust storm and heavy rains swept through northwestern india last night. those winds brought down more than 8,000 power poles and trees. of course we'll continue to follow this story as more than 200 people are hurt. we're told most of the deaths and injuries. policy leaders pressing pause on the vote to possibly support governor brown's water fix tunnel plan. the governor wants to build two massive tunnels from the delta to southern california. yesterday we previewed the meeting on "today in the bay." after five hours santa clara valley water district members agreed to table the vote until may 8th. take a look at this tweet from pittsburg police department. people getting phone calls from police officers demanding y. don't fall for it. it's a scam. they are calling from department phone numbers, telling folks there's a warrant out for their arrest and they need to pay up now.

will tag the chicks. a new story buzzing this morning, a car crash in d.c. released a swarm of bees. a tractor-trailer was loaded with pallets of honey bees. during the crash the strap broke and one of the pallets shifted and those bees escaped and started stinging people around the area. even crazier, a man and their son passed by the scene. turns out they were experienced bee handlers. they actually suited up and helped capture those bees there. >> wow. >> that's where the bees were located. >> what are the chances a bee handler happens to be driving by. >> happens for a good cause. mike, hopefully nothing like that causing trouble for commuters. >> so far. if it does happen, i'll be safe in the studio. i'll point to it. >> but you'll be on it. >> yes. we have that avengers movie,

ruddy giuliani outed the deal on live television last night. let's start with the president's admission. it came in an early morning tweet. as you can see there's a lot of text here. the important part is in the first sentence, the president acknowledging a reimbursement. to bring you up to speed the adult actress stormy daniels said she had an affair with donald trump. he denies it. but his personal lawyer, trump's personal lawyer michael cohen paid daniels $130,000 not to talk about it. all along donald trump says he's not involved, he didn't pay it. here is the president just days ago. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment? >> no. april 5th the president said he didn't know anything about the payment. last night, seemingly out of nowhere, the president's brand-new lawyer, former governor rudy giuliani said the

president not only knew about it, it it was from his own money. that shocked everybody including sean hannity. >> sorry i'm giving you a fact you don't know. it's not campaign money, no campaign violation. >> funneled it through a law firm. >> funneled it through a law firm and the president prepaid it. >> why would giuliani and trump admit something that trump previously said wasn't true, did it on camera. as giuliani said, it's campaign finance law. if cohen used his own money to prevent an adult actress from upsetting the presidential election, that would be an illegal campaign contribution. if the president paid cohen back, the white house seems to be saying it's not. that's debatable. the whole thing forced the president's hand to admit the payment to the actress. now, he still denies the affairs. we have a feeling we have not heard the last of this little bit today. i'll continue to follow on twitter.
