6:05 am
6:04, new for you and probably no surprise here, the housing crisis in the bay area is getting worse, especially here in the bay area. "today in the bay" kris sanchez live with a new study just released this morning. kris, i know this explained why things are getting worse. what did you find most interesting here? >> well, marcus, i'll tell you first, this housing complex went up, it seemed to be overnight along the expressway. it might seem like there's a lot of construction going on. we've heard from folks in milpitas, santa clara, what not, but that construction boom is not keeping pace with the population boom, and that is really one of the most interesting parts of this report. look at this graph showing the population change in 2016. more than 34,000 people left california all together largely because of the high housing cost while the bay area at the same time added 2,000 more people. but in the five years before california added 11 homes for
6:06 am
every 1,000 people. so it's clearly not in the same pace. there are not a lot of existing homes either. we have reported here on "today in the bay" a near zero inventory in some san jose neighborhoods. the conference is fierce. while folks coming to the bay area are drawn by high paying tech jobs, salaries on the low end have only risen 17% over the last 10 years. california has the highest home prices of any state with a median home price that is a quarter of a million dollars higher than the national median. that's enough to buy a house outright anywhere else in the country. this is new data coming from a san francisco nonprofit public policy group. a lot of numbers here. i have been posting some of them on my twitter feed. i also posted some of them on my facebook page so you can digest them when you have a little more time, maybe when you're not running out the door. the conclusion of the report is that we definitely need to build
6:07 am
a lot more housing in our california communities, particularly here in the bay area, even when that means letting go of that philosophy, not in my backyard. we need more housing even if it's high-density housing in the communities where we live. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. breaking news about a bombshell rocking the white house. president trump tweeting this morning that he approves paying $130,000 to stormy daniels but denies the affair. those tweets that we've been watching for, you can see it right there, the president said he did not know anything about that payment. scott mcgrew is tracking all of this new overnight development. he'll be back to break it all down for us coming up at 6:45. >> it is 6:07. san francisco may soon have to scramble for a new top cop, if what sources say is true about current police chief bill scott. nbc learns scott is on the short list to fill the same position at l.a. police department.
6:08 am
that's where scott works for 27 years before arriving in san francisco just 16 months ago. scott is not commenting on the report. this is what he said last night before appearing at sf police commission hearing. >> i have to be focused. we have a lot of work to do, all the recommendations, the reforms, property crime we're making good progress on. >> l.a.'s police commission is expected to finalize top three choices by the end of the month. ultimately l.a. mayor eric garcetti will decide who is hired. small businesses in oakland are expected to get a boost. from the foundation created by bay area bank. san francisco home bank loan created what it calls quality jobs fund. that fund providing $3 million investment to bay area group offering money to bay area businesses. the group expects to generate thousands of jobs. good thursday morning. right now at 6:08 we're settled into a nice weather pattern
