neighborhoods on the big island. let's get to miguel almaguer. >> the national guard has been activated and mandatory evacuations are underway as lava pours prompting a local state of emergency. this morning hundreds of residents and tourists in hawaii are evacuating, an attempt to outrun the flow of lava from hawaii's most active volcano. it comes after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake thursday caused the eruption on the eastern edge of the island. molten lava quickly pouring into residential areas prompting those living in the leilani estates to flee their homes. >> we have an eruption about six blocks away from our house right now.

>> reporter: plumes of smoke and ash seen for miles. >> my gosh. oh, my god. it's like big. >> reporter: residents capturing this footage of lava burning through the trees describing it as a curtain of fire cutting through the community, spewing more than 100 feet in the air and blocking off streets as fire officials detected extremely high levels of dangerous sulfur dioxide in the air. authorities say there is no way to predict how long the eruption will continue. an eruption in 2014 flowed down the surface of the volcano, burning homes. now residents fear more structures could be threatened in the area, one of the fastest growing in the state. hawaii's big island now battling nature's fury. this morning it remains unclear

how much longer the volcano will be active. the original event is less active at this moment. a new event is spewing steam. the good news, no injuries reported. >> keep us posted. let's get on the phone with a local farmer who was evacuated, tim. tim, good morning to you. can you tell us what happened and how it was you were evacuated last night? >> it's not much of a surprise. i live on top of an active volcano. so it's not really that crazy that this happened and that i had to evacuate my home, somewhere i'm comfortable with and everybody i live with. there are 30 people on my land alone that i had to evacuate and help evacuate.

>> police officers i know knocked on your door not once, not twice but a third time before you decided it was time to get out. what did police say? how dire was the situation? >> they didn't ever say it was dire. it was never a life or death situation. lava moves at two miles per hour. it is something we live on top of, an active volcano and you have to kind of agree with that before you come here. if you don't agree with that what are you really getting yourself into? i'm comfortable with this kind of thing happening. it wasn't that shocking to me. there were other people on my farm that it was very shocking to that aren't from america and never experienced a volcano or earthquake or lava where it is something to take back and realize where you are at and

what you are dealing with. at the end of the day i believe that mother nature is in charge. >> no question. >> you know, if you lived in the middle of the united states and you are dealing with tornadoes you are not going to complain about it. the tornadoes are in charge. you live in tornado alley, it is called tornado alley and you choose to be there and to deal with that is you are kind of warned beforehand. i'm not too surprised. as much as it is dangerous, i'm handling it the best i can. >> we are so glad to hear you are doing well and have everything in perspective. give our best to everybody you are working with and we will keep an eye on the situation. thank you. also, this morning, what did president trump know about the hush money payment to stormy daniels and when did he know about it? rudy giuliani, the president's recently hired attorney, is opening up about that in a brand new interview with nbc news.

peter alexander has the latest from the white house. >> reporter: rudy giuliani is offering nbc news new insights about why he made that stunning revelation about the president's involvement in a payment to stormy daniels when he did tell us he became aware of documents that show proof of the payment. the president and giuliani leaving white house aides out of the loop full steam ahead. this morning ma ing major fallo the president's new lawyer rudy giuliani revealing on live tv mr. trump paid michael cohen for the $130,000 hush money payment to stormy daniels. in a late night phone interview giuliani said he decided to reveal because i wanted to get out in front of the special counsel and the southern district of new york because at some points they would realize this information and leak it. >> why are you changing your story on stormy daniels?

>> reporter: a reimbursement the president paid cohen through retainer fees starting in 2017 according to giuliani after the president denied knowing about the payment just last month. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? >> reporter: giuliani telling nbc news he doesn't think trump realized he paid him back. giuliani saying the president responded i guess that is what it is for. the bombshell catching white house staff offguard including press secretary sarah huckabee sanders. giuliani says he wasn't just freelancing but speaking with the president's blessing telling the "washington post" he was well aware that at some point i was going to get this over with. later suggesting there were

political motivations. >> imagine if that came out on october 15, 2016 in the middle of the last debate with hillary clinton? >> to make it go away they made this -- >> cohen didn't ask. he did his job. >> reporter: stormy daniels lawyer reacting overnight. >> everyone involved in this transaction around the time knew the importance of the payment as it related to the election. so any claim that the payment had nothing to do with the election is completely bogus. there is no question it had everything to do with the election. >> reporter: president trump is up tweeting about nbc news this morning. it follows an nbc report that there was a wire tap on the phones of michael cohen citing two separate sources with knowledge of the legal proceedings involving cohen. three senior use officials saying the monitoring of the phones was limited to a log of phones and not a wire tap.

the president going off writing nbc news is wrong again. they cite sources which are constantly wrong. problem is like so many others the sources don't exist and are fabricated, fiction he writes. nbc, my former home of the apprentice is fake news. the president will be heading out of town to dallas where he will be speaking to the nra. if you have a twitter account hundreds of millions of users are being urged to change passwords after the company discovered a computer bug. >> i don't know about you guys but this is a huge pain like a lot of people i have a couple of passwords for a dozen of accounts so changing one password on twitter means changing a lot more if you want to be safe. it is one of the popups you might not read very carefully. anyone logging on to twitter from president trump will see

this message asking people to change passwords after the company quote identified a bug that stored passwords in an unmasked internal log. twitter uses a process called hashing to save passwords. a bug accidently stored full user name and passwords on a simple but dangerous internal list leaving hundreds of millions of passwords exposed. >> i feel like that is happening a lot. >> reporter: it wasn't leaked and hasn't been stolen but twitter saying the leak should have never been made saying this is not a breach. twitter's chief technology officer adding we are sharing the information to help people make an informed decision. we didn't have to but believe it is the right thing to do. for millions changing one password will probably mean having to change others. >> i kind of use the same

password for everything. >> reporter: she is not alone. it's unsafe but not uncommon for the same password to be used across accounts and it includes accounts you might not remember having. experts say one way is to use a password manager. >> i have always wondered if i should use one of those because i think what if it gets hacked? >> so far we have been told they are safe. one i was trying called one password. unfortunately, it doesn't work with nbc e-mails and that is the one i am usually struggling with in the morning. >> did you change twitter? >> i am in the process of signing up for one password. this morning cbs is bracing to be hit with a new lawsuit over handling of sexual misconduct allegations against

former anchor charlie rose. >> the accusations stem from an incident last year just months before the anchor was fired following multiple allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior. >> reporter: the attorney for three women who worked at cbs this morning says his cliepnts are ready to sue as allegations grow. the "washington post" reporting that the attorney sent a letter to cbs earlier this year alleging repeated verbal harassment. management and studio staff witnessed the unlawful conduct and complaints were made. it comes as 27 additional women have come forward accusing rose of sexual misconduct over the last 30 years. the post detailing two complaints. in one case saying the executive producer was warned about a relationship developing between rose and a young staffer.

>> this friend went to the executive producer to say these lunches i think are a little bit odd. >> reporter: tells the post he was never told there was inappropriate behavior. according to the paper the previous executive producer of the show was also warned back in 2011 following a holiday party after an employee says rose forcibly kissed her. >> this woman left the party stunned and the next morning went into the executive producer of cbs this morning at the time and told him what had happened. >> reporter: now the head of the late show confirms that the employee told him about the incident though she urged him not to go to human resources. he reportedly brought the incident up with rose. cbs saying the response fell within the scope of cbs policy at the time. in a statement to nbc news cbs

this morning there are new calls for the nfl to make immediate changes. the nfl's washington redskins are fighting back this morning after bombshell allegations in the "new york times" made by five of the team's cheerleaders. the women say on the 2013 photo shoot in coast resta rica they forced to pose topless. the redskins releasing a statement that reads in part the organization is very concerned by the allegations adding they are immediately looking into the situation but say current and former cheerleaders are sharing very different first-hand accounts that directly contradict many details. nbc news spoke with two former redskins cheerleaders on the trip who said all allegations laid out by the times are true. and two other cheerleaders who were there say they were never

asked to do anything against their will. >> if it was something you didn't feel comfortable with you were able to not make that a part of your experience. >> in all six years i never took off my top regardless of if you took your top off or not was always a choice. >> reporter: the redskins are not the only team dealing with cheerleaders who feel denigrated. >> we had to go to a yacht party with a fan and we had to sit around and mingle with his friends. they were hugging on us. it was very uncomfortable. i was 19 years old. there were two 18 year olds on the team. they were serving alcohol. we were pressured to drink. >> reporter: the saints deny the claims. davis filed gender discrem nation complaint after the saints fired her for wearing this outfit in an instagram post. some teams regulate what they can show and prohibit them from fraternizing with the players.

>> if a cheerleader is eating in a restaurant and an nfl player walks in they have to leave or they are fired. >> reporter: now asked roger goodell for a meeting later today to discuss changing the rules. so far no response from the nfl. >> i'm going to come full force. these women deserve it. >> the league has certain rules for all nonplayer employees. each team can create their own special rules for cheerleaders. the attorney and many advocates want to change that. they want one set of fair and equal rules for all cheerleaders just like football players get. >> joining us are two former team captains of the washington redskins cheerleaders. the redskins asked you to speak out on the team's behalf. it's nice to have you here. when you read the article about a trip you were on with redskins cheerleaders did that sound like the trip you had gone on forced

to pose topless and having to escort bigwig sponsors and such to the bar? >> not at all. >> we can't discount the experiences that other women had on the team. we can bring to light the facts of the circumstances. >> we each had our own experiences. >> the topless being forced simply not true. everything is optional. some girls were excited to do those things. in terms of being an escort, that was never a perception that i had. i think that being welldom to sponsors is different. >> let's talk about the topless situation. can i ask a general question? why was there topless photography with people around? what was the point of that? was it for a calendar? >> this is a calendar photo shoot. the perception of topless is different from what is used in our calendars. we are always covered even if

there is a topless photo. like we said, we always have the option to say no. we are never forced or told to do something we don't want to do. >> do you think it is possible because you don't want to discount the women experiences those who spoke to the "new york times." is it possible someone might have felt -- even if someone said it is your choice. you know how like i don't know if it is really my choice. is it possible they felt like they were forced into it? >> i can't speak to it. >> we know the facts and the circumstances was that nothing was forced upon us. >> either of you guys at that sponsor event where they said they felt like -- i think the girls described it as they were kind of pimped out. >> those terms pimped out, escort they need to stop. it is absolutely not what happened. >> i was there. i did not feel that way. for me it was a relaxing night

with my friends. and to put it into context the women are not selected by the sponsors to escort them to the club. we are always with someone we knew. we were always together. the two representatives from the redskins, i have great relationships with them and i was happy to see them there. safety first and i never felt pressured. it was something that our director asked us to do -- not asked us. she wanted to know if we wanted to enjoy a night with our friends. we were veterans on the team. we did another zip lining trip, as well. it is something to do together. >> we just saw on the piece not a larger question about the culture of nfl cheer leading and whether they are treated with respect that football players get, whether they are subject to in some cases kind of strict rules that seem outside the bounds of what someone might be

put up to. did you guys see any of that? do you have any problems with the culture in general? >> the culture behind our environment as cheerleaders is such an empowering and sisterhood. it is a bond. from day one when we make the team it is -- we are already like as a -- kind of help me out here. >> to answer this question i do agree. the nfl is totally male dominated. not to say they are not female employees and female fans because i was one of both and am one of both, the fact that the article painted such a harsh light and the fact that stephanie, the director of the cheerleaders, a group of women led by one woman would suggest that it was her responsibility to take care of all of this is pretty -- >> one final question because this struck me as outrageous and bothered me.

i read that an average cheerleader makes $150 per game. that's on the high end. the low end is $75 per home game. are we in the ballpark and is that ridiculous to you guys? >> a lot of strides have been made over the last few years especially from when i started to where they are now. it's improvement to getting paid better, being treated like -- >> is that the ballpark? i don't know what being paid well. >> we are not on the team anymore. >> is that what it was? close. >> approximately. >> i can see that it upsets you. why? >> i hate that the negative light has been portrayed on our organization for something i was so passionate about and so many women felt this was the best years of their lives. my experience was never anything that was portrayed in this

a powerful volcanic eruption sending lava streaming toward homes in hawaii and forcing tourists and residents to evacuate overnight. miguel almaguer has the latest on this situation. miguel, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. the governor is declaring a state of emergency. the national guard has been activated and mandatory evacuations are now underway. no injuries but a potentially dangerous situation. the first eruption began late last night and lasted several hours following several earthquakes including a 5.0. residents on the big island began to see lava spewing more than 120 feet into the air as it also poured into nearby residential neighborhoods. the active volcano near the leilani estates has been a swarm of recent activity. this morning locals say they can see steam rising, lava flowing and the smell of sulphur in the air. some have described the lava as a curtain of fire.

we )re getting new details good morning. it's 8:56. i'm marcus washington. we're getting new details about that shooting in mill valley apartment complex yesterday that left one woman dead along with the shooter. one man is still in critical condition this morning. the investigators now believe it stems from a landlord/tenant dispute. police say an 80-year-old man shot both people around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. neighbors say the man who was critically injured is, in fact, the landlord.
