and take a look at that. the mars insight lander took off from the air force base this morning. nasa's spacecraft is headed on a six-month voyage to mars. its mission is to study the deep interior of the red planet. this is the first launch in history to originate from the west coast. this morning, we trace billions of dollars worth of unnecessary waste to your kitchen trash bin. many of us find out of date food and we toss it. but be sure to watch this story before you get rid of anything. consumer investigator chris kmura found confusing labels that are outdated just like the food. >> he saved the fresh shrimp balls that he calls poison. >> you're calling it poison. >> i can show you. it smells awful. he says the supermarket sold him
7:51 am
this package 14 days past the sell by date on the label. he didn't think of looking at the date until after he ate some and felt sick. >> my food was two weeks expired. >> reporter: we checked out that same store, shopping april 23rd, we bought shrimp balls dated april 21st, trays of raw seafood mix and a package of raw beef with no date at all. on the shelves, we found several dry goods dated as far back as january. but here's the thing. >> it's not illegal. >> reporter: dr. linda harris leads the western center for food safety at uc davis. we brought her the out of date items we bought. she brought some old food from her own kitchen. >> reporter: every item has a date in the past. should we throw all this out? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: dr. harris explained that most dates on food are not actually expiration dates. they actually tell you when peak quality drops off. she says most food is perfectly safe to eat past the date on the label. >> it's not a safety issue.
7:52 am
>> reporter: even the salad dressing from 2014 she found unopened in her fridge. >> i might put some on a spoon and taste it before i sprayed it on my salad, but i think i would still eat this. >> even though it's been almost four years. >> even though it's been almost four years. >> reporter: u.s. law requires an actual expiration date on one item, baby formula. every other date you see on food is voluntary under federal standards. so that beef with no date at all meets federal criteria. absent clear government guidelines we are bombarded with terms, best by, expires on, use by, best flavor by, sell by, enjoy by. the meanings vary, and so does the science used to calculate the date. somehow, everyday shoppers are expected to decipher it. >> what that confusion leads to is consumers unnecessarily throwing away some food when it might still be perfectly good to eat. >> reporter: by some estimates 40% of all food that is grown, produced, and shipped in this country is never eaten.
7:53 am
instead, it winds up in landfills, in part because we don't understand the dates on labels. that should change this summer. >> rather than having 10 or 20 different phrases, you'll see one or two. >> reporter: the grocery manufactures associations is telling companies to use best if used by or use by. most products will get best if used by. since the association says most food is safe to use or consume after the date. the remaining few products will read, use by. that's reserved for highly perishable food that might pose a health risk after the date on the label. >> so, maybe a sliced deli meat or raw shellfish, something like that, that you would -- you know, that would have that food safety concern over time. >> reporter: food experts are hungry to teach families a about the new lingo and help them stop wasting so much food. >> which in turn helps them save money and i think that's a win
7:54 am
for everybody. >> that was consumer investigator chris reporting. the new labels are still voluntary. any federal law remains mostly silent so if you ever expect you were sold spoiled food, no matter what the feds say about the label, you may report it locally. call the california department of public health. it has the authority to investigate. at 7:54, we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, it's our "clear the shelters" segment. we'll introduce you to maya and beno next. segment"
