downtown sj from communications hill the time is 7:00 this sunday may, 6th. 2018. we want to start you off with a live look at downtown san jose from communications hill. the temperature outside, 54 degrees. good morning. thank you so much for waking up with us this sunday morning. vianey is standing by with a look at the microclimate forecast. we got peeks of sunshine and breezy. that cloud cover and nice marine layer will deepen. 64 degrees and it's a little breezy, 13 miles per hour. overall our temperatures are in the 50s across the board, 52 degrees for santa rosa, 53 for san jose and in the east bay

also in those 50s and as far as temperatures, go, it's on the cooler end but doppler radar showing a couple of clouds moving -- and right now we've got strat us clouds and what that's expected to do, it's expected to kind of keep our sunday partly cloudy but once again we'll expect to see those peeks of sunshine, calm nice weather for today and not too hot. temperatures will climb in the 70s and slightly cooler in some spots but 60s and 70s on the board. later in the workweek we're talking 80s on the map. i'll let you know about that in the next 15 minutes, it's going to get a little warm out there. >> ready for summer. i'm ready. >> a section of story road in san jose will remain closed this morning, police are investigating a deadly shooting. it happened just after midnight in the area of story road and jackson avenue. officers say when they arrived they found a man with at least one gunshot wound and he was

pronounced dead at the scene. they won't release the name until the family is notified. this is the 7th homicide in san jose this year. santa clara street was packed with a parade of cinco de mayo revelers. extra patrol, part of the plan the agency unveiled to us on friday. working 12-hour shifts. people we talked with it's all about having a good time and also a safe time. >> the music, just having a good time. >> restaurant and bars brought in extra security early to help handle those clouds. >> palo alto police are investigating a deadly crash on the peninsula. it happened about 10:00 p.m. on east charleston road near el camino real in palo alto. it was closed to traffic for several hours. police are only a one person was killed in the crash. no our details at this time.

>> the chp needs your help in finding the driver in a deadly hit-and-run crash in contra costa county. they found a man dead on the side of highway 4 just west of the road in discovery bay. we're told the body was found just after 7:00 yesterday morning. here's a description of the suspect a suspect's vehicle, a 2000 to 2006. >> this car has a lot of horse power, not enough to outrun the law in oakland. they towed this mustang after a side show and confiscated several other cars. they are stepping up patrols to crack down on side shows that have become prefl lent in the east bay. the situation in hawaii remains fluid and dangerous this morning. there are new ground fis you'res and lava flows the air quality

one illegal weapon taken off the streets. >> and bought an assault rifle a number of years ago and laws of california have changed in regards to the type that can be possessed here for citizens and because of that, he's now technically in possession of an illegal firearm but needs to turn it in. so this is a perfect opportunity for him to do that. >> people who turned in guns received up to 100 or $200 depending on the weapon. >> stay prepared in indication of an emergency. several neighborhoods evacuated in novato yesterday but it was only a drill. the community held a voluntary evacuation drill but for first time it involved several neighborhoods in high risk fire areas after the disaster fires in the north bay, residents wanted to lesch what arn what t disaster strikes. >> what happened up there, you know, is really sent a huge message into marin. we're capitalizing on that with the evacuation drills, our

preparedness and fire wise promotion. >> several agencies including the novato fire protection district and marin county sheriff's office took part in yesterday's drill. yesterday would have been former mayor san francisco mayor ed lee's 66th birthday. to honor his memory, they dedicated a new exhibit and unveiled a photo hung in the hall of mayor. the exhibit chronicles his leg see as an advocate and leader and elected official. and set to open to the public tomorrow. >> he had a way about him that was developed over all of these years of getting something done and not worrying about a lot of bluster or commentary or press for himself. i think it's true. he was a very effective fine and wonderful mayor. >> a magnolia tree was also planted near city hall in special memory in a ceremony to honor the late mayor.

passengers on a carnival cruiseship wanted to see, a pipe broke caused all of that flooding and this is on day five of a 7-day cruise from new orleans. these are some images that were posted on facebook, they are going viral now. a lot of titanic references made there. you can see why. carnival cruise says 50 rooms were affected when a water line broke thursday night. kbests affected by the flooding are getting a 100% refund. as they should. >> back home on earth, the spacex drag on flashed down in the pacific ocean west of baja. thgs video from this morning when the ship left the space station and loaded with 4,000 pounds of equipment and experiments, it is the third successful resupply mission to and from the space station. it is being transported to long beach where some of the cargo will be removed and taken to nasa for analysis.

>> a follow-up to an east bay rock climber on the mend after a bad fall on el capitan. climbing more than 7 hours when he fell. he was 2300 feet off the ground ael while his harness and rope caught him, he immediately knew something was wrong. >> i ended up dangling on the end of the rope. i looked down at my feet because they hurt like heck and there's -- your legs are 1 80 degrees straight line and mine was 160 degrees and i knew right then like everything had changed. >> and imagine looking down and seeing that. too late in the day for a rescue so he ended up spending the night on the rock before his rescue on friday. he suffered broken bones in his left ankle and right heel. in spite of it all he's in good spirits and even finding humor in what happened.

have in store for us we've got a couple of changes and people are going to like that too. it's a preview to summer. we're definitely on tap to see warm temperatures but as we head towards the end, you'll notice it's a little cool out there today. we've got a weak approaching system, san francisco has a lot of cloud cover and yesterday was pretty cloudy and today it's going to be similar. we have a lot of strat us clouds. let me know what you're seeing outside of your window. whatever your choice is at nbc vianey. 54 degrees in hayward and san jose in the 60s and nice comfortable temperatures. here's a look at the doppler radar. you can see a couple of clouds and that will keep us on the cooler side. our temperatures are expected to run a couple of degrees cooler than what we saw yesterday but very similar. not a huge change in our

temperature difference but if you're going to be hanging out along the coast, you may notice a nice light breeze because of a marine layer. the 24-hour temperature change, no big difference here, half moon bay running 2 degrees warmer at this hour. livermore at 2 degrees cooler and overall we're seeing a couple of those clouds. your microclimate highs for today will be in the low 70s, mid-70s for the south bay. so cupertino, 73. if i head over to the east bay, similar conditions as well, i'll have about 65 for oakland. if iz take it further inland, high of 76. as we kbgo along the peninsula, 60s for san mateo and in the city tonight, it's going to get a little breezy. take a nice jacket. i wouldn't say a heavy jacket but light jacket would be appropriate. and embarcadero could be climbing to 60, 61 degrees in the north bay about 76 degrees for santa rosa.

our daytime temperatures will be comfortable. let's look at the next several days. as we head in towards tuesday, we get a weak system that might bring a chance of drizzle in the north bay into wednesday but this is going to bring the biggest impact. this is what we're talking about the summer like conditions. we have a strong ridge of high pressure and that's going to warm up quite nicely, not just northern california but all the way down through southern california and going to bring our temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, possibly maybe even some 90s on the board. that's going to set us up for a nice warming trend. if you're heading down to l.a. in the middle of the workweek, you're probably going to be met with warm temperatures there as well. over the next seven days, here's the weaker system tuesday into wednesday. we get an increase in cloud cover and chance of seeing krizle on wednesday for the north bay. as we head towards friday and saturday, that's san francisco's high, high of 70 degrees. check out inland spots, we get a morning drizzle again on wednesday and that's an 84 for

some tense moments at the party's convention in san diego. patrick little is the leading republican candidate. he's facing off against senator dianne feinstein in the upcoming election but posted this video on youtube saying party officials kicked him out of the convention, in fact he did have to be escorted out by security. as he was being led away, he was seen stomping on an israeli flag. republican leaders say they will not condone any hate speech. nbc bay area will have a bit of a presence on "meet the press" this morning and we are returning the favor. you may have noticed this mug on our set this morning. nbc political director chuck todd will be using the nbc bay area mug on his set today. it's a reminder he'll be in san jose on tuesday to moderate the gubernatorial debate. quts meelt the press begins at 8:00 right after this news kafrt kaxt. on tuesday night we're partnering with the silicon

valley community organization for a gubernatorial debate. it will air statewide. six of the top candidates will be with us, including gavin newsom and it will be moderated by chuck todd. chuck and raj math thai will ask questions to the candidates. you can go to our facebook page to submit questions you want the ka candidates to answer. whether it's kids or manage nar athletes on tv, concussions are everywhere and changing the way we play or stop playing certain sports. there could be a cure on the whoize design and it's all about c can nnibi cannibis. >> the nfl released a report showing that despite rule changes and improvements in equipment, concussions rose more than 13% last year. there is a promising treatment that many scientists would like to pursue.

the problem is it comes from cannibis. the government and sports leagues, they won't touch it. but now, there may be a cure for that too. >> i was able to smack heads every day for a job but not have any lasting concussion symptoms while using cannibis as part of my regiment. that's a testament to the fact it might work. that's something to listen to. >> since retiring from a six-year nfl career, nate jackson has been a vocal advocate for the therapy putic products of cannibis. the league at times hasn't taken kindly to his views. >> thc is the boogy man as far as the nfl goes, it's the thing that gets you high and they test for. it's the thing that scares everybody. >> still, jackson believes roughly 50% of current nfl players use cannibis medicinally because the alternative is risky. >> then you see the people becoming addicted to opioids. i know some myself and the

investigate. we want to turn to breaking news in the south bay. san jose police are searching for a suspect near 505 tenth street near san jose state. there are several police units in the area. no word on what the suspect is wanted for but again, steer clear of that area, 50510th street. >> new details this morning about another crash involving a self-driving car. this is video of friday's collision. police say the google owned waymo mini van was in manual mode, not in autonomous mode. the driver of another car ran a red light then swerved to avoid a car and hit the waymo vehicle. w waymo is the self-driving car spinoff. it has been under scrutiny in light of two deadly crashes, one of them happened on highway 101 in mountain view when the tesla model s crashed into a safe barrier and killed the driver. the tesla was in autopilot mode

vote by absentee ballot. that makes the timing of tomorrow's debate particularly important. here's another factor. this will be the first televised debate throughout the state on every nbc station. wherever people live, they'll have an funt to see this event at a very crucial time. >> we talked about chuck todd, he's going to be moderating. most people know him as a political editor for the nationally known "meet the press." you can say the same that california has a national presence, right? what happens here can have implications nationally? >> an awful lot can happen here and impacts things nationally. no secret that the state sets the tone really for so many policies and other states. whatever is decided here on issues like death with dying and sanctuary status and climate change, health care, numerous areas, it usually rings loud throughout the rest of the country. more times than not, yeah, california is a starting place for the rumbling that happens downstream. >> larry, tuesday night, where do you think we are going to

potentially see fireworks between the candidates? >> yeah, okay, well, look, we know this much. this state is going to be one that people are watching because these candidates may be tackling education and may be tackling taxes. they may be tackling aa climate change. and all of the six candidates very different ideas on what they will say about these things. we know for example, education, a fierce fight between antonio and newsom. charter schools and newsom not. put those together and we could have a lot of things rumbling. >> do you see this debate as potentially a tipping point to help california voters decide what they are going to do in november? >> it's hard to say it's a tipping point per se because it's rarely one event that changes things. but we know this much. with so much on the line, these candidates now have to make statements they might not have made otherwise, they don't have much time anymore. it's the first time all will be

seen statewide. and for those reasons, whatever happens on tuesday night will no doubt reverberate for the rest of the primary season. >> i'm looking at what you're saying in terms of the intent here and we'll see all of them on this big stage together. it will depend on the questions and for mat but would you expect them to mix it up? what are the big potential conflicts and differences between the candidates. >> here's one thing to tell you about the format, every candidate will have a question and all of the other five candidates will get to respond. so whatever the topic is, whether it's education, whether it's taxes and whether it's prison realignment, they won't be able to avoid it. they'll have to comment on the same stuff and that's something you just don't see at most of these debates. >> larry, thank you as always. we'll watch tuesday night for sure. stay with us, "today in the bay" is right back after this short break. up next, if you think you like big macs, wait until you see this guy. we'll explain what he accompli h

cl cloud cover but it looks certificaserene. it doesn't mean we're expecting rain, we've got a nice little stratus cloud situation going on and what that's going to do, it's going to keep us on the cooler end. san francisco right now also seeing those clouds out there. if you're going to be heading out this morning, maybe you're heading out to work, if you work on a sunday morning like we do, don't worry though, we are expecting a nice warming trend into the afternoon and that's going to keep us in the 60s and some 70s out there. right now the doppler radar, you can see it's showing off those stratus clouds and that's exactly what we've got going on over here. we have a weaker system bringing that cloud cover and with the nice marine layer that kept us nice and cool. doppler radar, you can see not tooi too foggy but some spots are seeing cloudy conditions. it's perfect weather to head out on an early morning jog. look at the temperatures, ideal, it's not too bright out too sunny. and the temperatures remain on
