morning but it was interesting. >> and today is going to be much warmer. we're going to go from the 60s and 70s yesterday to 80s for much of the inland area. you're going to notice it's going to be much warmer today. let's go to martinez where our temperatures are going to be in the low 60s to start, sunshine and low 80s for the afternoon. our seven-day forecast shows temperatures cooling down for the middle of the week and warming up, check out the mother's day forecast for inland areas, up to 87 degrees. make your plans accordingly. we'll talk more about this and might have more detail about a crash in oakland. >> on highway 13, we'll give folks a nice big view of the commute which isn't much of a commute right now. a little bit out of the altamont as you see in the morning about this time. this is northbound 13 approaching broadway terrace, we have a more specific location now and it sounds like it involves a deer that was hit the deer is injured in the area and chp may slow traffic a bit over the next few and we see more

and napa countiy ies will get a taste of this system and at the california republican party convention in san diego this weekend, neither of the two top gop candidates for governors got the party aegs endorsements. san diego businessman got 55% of the vote. less than 60% needed to get the party endorsement, travis allen of hunting ton beach, 40% of the vote and 4% voted for no endorsements at all. >> it's really interesting, complicated to see what happens moving forward. >> i think the republicans have a lot of difficulty in california. >> the two top vote getters from the june 5th primary regardless of party will face each other and no endorsement could mean the november general election would be between the top two democrats. a political analysts say voters are just starting to get engaged

police say someone shot two men near cesar chavez. this happened after midnight and we're hearing the shooting might be connected to a funeral. we do know the victims will live and police haven't arrested anyone. >> a home invasion robbery leads to an officer involved shooting. later today the police chief is expected to shed new light on exactly what happens. bob redell joins us with what we know led up to the shooting. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. later this afternoon eddie garcia at police headquarters will spi eak to us and give us more details. here's what we know so far. this happened early yesterday morning. there were two people who broke into a unit at an apartment complex in what police believe was a home invasion. police responded and one officer opened fire. witnesses tell us they heard four to five gunshots as police

searched for the watt suspetwo one armed with a gun and refused to drop the weapon. police eventually caught that person and their accomplice. no one was injured during the shooting. reporting live outside san jose police head quarter bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:05 right now. developing the situation in hawaii. you can see not a pretty sight. eruptions are becoming more dangerous and destruct irveg. lava shooting 300 feet in the air. look at that, embers going above the trees right there. this is happening there new video from the usgs and at least 30 homes are gone in the neighborhood this is on the big island and some of those evacuees have returned to their homes to find all of this left. some of those evacuees grabbing pets and some experts say other areas could be in danger as well. people we've talked to have left

their homes and say they feel helpless. >> my neighbor larry, his house is burning down it's real. it's hitting and it's okay. >> so far no reports of any injuries. kill way auea is one of the mos active volcanos. it appears president trump may be shifting his stance on providing answers in the russia probe. his new attorney rudy giuliani over the weekend announced that the president may take the fifth rather than testify in robert mueller's investigation. as recently as friday, the president says he looked forward to being interviewed and giuliani is calling the probe heavy handed saying it may set the president up to perjure himself. >> the way they've acted, i came into this case with the desire to do that and they just keep convincing me not to do it. >> giuliani is also still trying to clear up what the president knew and when the stormy daniels saga began. giuliani now suggests the president may have paid hush

only the on ramp. you see the speeds on the pen nings la are great. there's one issue from the south bay up to the city, we're looking at southbound -- actually northbound 101 at third reports of a potential fender bender affecting the off ramp there but not looking at problems as far as the freeway speeds getting to san francisco on that side. over on the east bay side we have a backup in the cash lanes but they are moving much better now and we're looking at fremont, 880 with the headlights down towards milpitas and in towards the hayward area. back to you. >> coming p next on quts today on the bay. scare on the tarmac, southwest airlines plane collides with a truck on the runway. terrifying moments leading up to this as the airline is confronting yet another accident. safety regulators say musk hung up on them. >> heat up too quickly and too much and then that gas then

already around the normal high and does go up a few grew degr more from there. we cool down and then warm up. that's coming up in about five minutes. looking at the north bay, san rafael towards us in the southbound commute, will be just fine. we'll talk about what else i'm tracking down and i have a new crash reported and we'll see what's going on for highway one. happy monday to you. the stock market made big moves on the positive even after somewhat weak jobs report. we got great news on unemployment rate, that dropped under 4% for first time in eight years but job growth was ank. tesla is back in the news, bloomberg says ee lon musk hung up on ntsb regulators during a phone call following the deadly crash and fire. the tesla model x. this came before musk's erratic

behavior with analysts during the company's all important earnings call. where he called questions boring and bone headed. he's also making fun of one of the world's richest men, warren buffett sending out tweets challenging some of the things that buffett has said. it's mostly one sided tweet war. sharesing in apple will open at the all time high. apple said it would spend $100 billion to buy back its own shares. when a company buys back its own shares they cease to exist which remeans the remaining shares are worth more. democrats in the house want to release thousands more of fake ads and posts that ran on facebook during the election. we now know a lot of those memes and ads passed around about patriotism or racial issues were actually created by the russians. the wall street journal says the house intelligence committee has about 3,000 of those fake ads that we have not seen yet.

we do know in one case the russians actually use facebook to set up two competing rallies in houston, texas. we see about 50 and i've shown you a lot of them, it will be an eagle or patriotism, all the of the things you think are like yeah, russians but there are three thousand more and we may see them sometime this beak. >> that will be interesting, thank you. new this morning, yet another scare for southwest airlines. if you look closely here, you can see a truck underneath an airplane southwest is only stating the obvious, that a truck hit a plane at baltimore washington airport in maryland. a lot of people in wine country believe next month the fate of napa county future may be in the hands of voters. member c calls for limits on tree removal and they say napa valley is maxing out on winery

space. they argue it would put a choke hold on projects. a hero's welcome for a man who helped bring down a suspected golden state killer. paul holmes received a standing ovation from a crowd of roughly 25,000 people at the crime con in nashville. for decades he followed the golden state killer case and is credited for accumulating evidence that led to the arrest of joseph deangelo. poles recently retired as an investigator. speaking of heroes, check out this 11-year-old, he found a wallet full of cash and credit cards in redwood city over the weekend. what did he decide to do? go buy a lot of candy? no. he called police and handed over the wallet. officers found its owner who was certainly very grateful. redwood city police didn't share the boy's name so we'll call him honest abe for now. >> big smile, doing the right thing. >> all of the things he could

in santa rosa, 83 as well. san francisco 69 degrees and half moon bay, looking at a high there of 65 degrees with upper 70s for palo alto and in san jose. we've got this area of low pressure iappreciate i'll be wa moving closer and it's weak and spread out and not going to bring us any rain. it will bring an increase in cloud cover by wednesday and gusty winds. speaking of clouds, we have this beautiful sunset sent to me by my friend on twitter. @karihall weather. here's a look at that amazing sunset in pacifica. you see any beautiful weather? maybe a nice sunrise, send it to me and then it's going to be a nice day up to 80 degrees for the inland area. it will cool off a few degrees with the winds picking up for the middle of the week. look at what happens for the mother's day weekend, planning to go to the vineyards, it's going to be very warm in the upper 80 ae 0s inland and san

francisco through the upper 60s to 70s. >> whether they go through tunnels or open air, right now we're not worried about the trans bay tunnel. there's no problem from b.a.r.t. that's not what i'm talking about. the south bay and east bay, things look great, in san francisco the macarthur tunnel right here may be affected by debris from the north side or at the north end, reports of debris in the roadway. all i know, a little bit of something and we don't see any slowing, we'll track that and so far things are looking great there and lombard and getting into san francisco, picking up the volume. contra costa county, bay point, concord moving nicely towards the walnut creek interchange. we have that earlier crash that started and that may be a concern towards the cash lanes which never had a chance to

florida. you want to listen up if you or a loved one es a developing story. pretty crazy story out of florida. if you or a loved one uses vaping pens, pay attention, first responders say a man died after his vaping pen exploded. the explosion also triggered a fire in the man's home. firefighters still don't know if the explosion itself killed him or if it knocked him unconscious leaving him trapped by the

flames. >> lithium batteries called a runaway, they start to heat up too quickly or too much and then then that gas ignites or explodes. >> authorities believe an autopsy will determine an exact cause of death. fema is calling this the first death tied to an exploding vape pen. 5:24. if you think you're getting a lot of robo calls these days, you're right. "new york times" is reporting that there are more than 3 billion auto mated calls just this month. 900 million more than last april. the good news is congress is regulating and aware of this problem and they have been told hearings to put a stop to those calls. no stressful connection for the next time you fly to florida. this morning southwest airlines starts new nonstop flights from san jose to orlando. the airport added a lot of new routes in the past year.

up quickly today. by early afternoon we're at 78 degrees and we're going to see all of our highs for the inland areas heading in the low to mid-80s while san jose will be at 78 degrees, 78 in palo alto and 69 in san francisco. i know you had a great weekend, let's talk about the weekend ahead in about seven minutes. and mike, now you're concerned about the bay bridge. >> not about the structural integrity. let's get that clear. i don't have the credentials to analyze that. doing just fine. concerned about the backup that we saw early on at the toll plaza. all lanes are backing up now and no metering lights are registered but the backup i was worried perhaps the berkeley curve may show an early slowdown, we'll track this trend as we look at the approach. so far upper east shore freeway is already off the walnut creek interexchange. and the metering lights appear to be on the bay bridge with the traditional backup and started a little early. the zoo exit there, we have a

crash reported and sounds like everything is getting to the shoulder quickly but i'll track the counter commute. tri valley and peninsula standard right now. back to you. >> 5:31 right now. you and your family's health needs may be put on hold because thousands of workers are preparing to strike at uc hospitals across the bay area. pete suratos is live in san francisco this morning. pete i know some people have started to show up this morning. >> that's right. i want to point out there will be protests at the previous location we're at in the mission bay area and we'll start within this half hour but you see in front of the area and want to point out this is one of the locations where protests are taking place because we'll see cam la harris and new som, this

will have an impact on folks that may have appointments at different hospitals not only here but throughout the bay area. i want to jump into the specifics during this three-day strike through the system. you see thatyour screen, 800 cancer appointments will be postponed including 2840 chemotherapy infusions. 300 nonemergency surgeries rescheduled. as far as the purpose of the strike, increase in wages for service workers within the uc system, which includes but not limited to janitors, cooks and security guards and truck drivers and that's just naming a small group of these service workers. the union is asking for 20% raises over next three years and hospital is offering only 3% over four years. the california nurse's association is also going to be part of the strike on tuesday and showing solidarity.

a representative with union for the workers had this to say about current wages for workers that they are -- >> when we talk about service members, they make about $40,000 a year and they clean the hospital. they don't clean a hospital room, there's not a surgery that happens. >> taking you back out here live, you see workers all right out here picketing. i want to point out there's going to be more than 10,000 workers part of the strike through the next three days. we'll have more details as they come in this morning. live in san francisco, pete suratos, qu"today in the bay." >> also happening today, if you're a college student dealing with depression or anxiety, students not likely getting the help they need. east bay in hayward today will address the lack of mental health counselors for students. organizers say there's only one mental health counselor for

every 2500 students. >> new this morning, a busy night for berkeley police, they arrested three people in two robberies just blocks apart. both of these stories pretty wild here. the berkeley side, the man thought he was meeting a woman for a date but it was a set up. two people robbed him on hey street near dwight and mlk. just blocks away, a young couple stepped in to stop a robbery and the suspect punched the boyfriend. so the girlfriend pepper sprayed the crook. >> 5:34. san jose police say someone was shot in the area of story road in jackson avenue happened early sunday morning. a man died and police not identified the victim or any suspect. they are actually hoping witnesses come forward. a follow-up now on a disabled dog that was stolen in san francisco just a couple of weeks ago. remember phil low who was deaf and blind and in dire need of his cancer medication.

this is a big day for the first lady. melania trump announces her formal platform unveiling the goals she hopes to meet. something all first ladies do and many believe melania will focus on children. during her 16 months at the white house she concentrated some efforts on cyber bullying. take a look at this bald eagle with his little eaglet. this is a big moment because the eaglet fell and the eaglet called stormy fell out of the nest and landed on a branch. you can see where the nest is and where he ended. he was stuck for days. his parents never left his side. watch the moment when stormy returns and watch the dad as he realizes what's going on. >> yeah, went right to pap pa right there. of course you can imagine was so proud. that's my boy.

pictures and you may see it featured right here. we go from warm to okay for the middle of the weekend and big warm-up in the temperature for the end of the weekend. and mike, you're saying there's more slowing in the east bay. >> there is, one other culprit is a crash here south 880 around industrial. we did have a crash and it looks like everything has gotten to the shoulder but it's a distraction. expect more slowing through the area. a smooth flow of traffic as well, no major problems for the south bay. there may be an issue with more slowing building up and gravel southbound 680 heading down past where we see the focus of the slowing as well. getting a break as folks join in and cut over perhaps for highway 84 into pleasanton and liverm e livermore. we'll watch as crews arrive there through burn nell. 880 past the coliseum. no major problems, southbound headlights towards the san mateo bridge, that's the direction with the build right now. other side of the build light as

suspect is in court today. welcome back, it is 5:55, the waffle house shooting suspect is in court today. police say he opened fire at e thele waffle house outside nashville. four died and four others hurted and a man wrestled the gun away from the shooter. don't be surprised if you see military air crafts flying around the east bay because the military operation happening at the field in concord this week.

if you're in that area you'll see a v-2 os prey military aircraft like the one on the screen. it will be flying in and out of mechanicsville at 9:00 this morning and 4:00 p.m. at 5:56, a lot of questions after a man died in police custody after he flagged down two deputies saturday morning at the country girl truck stop. a 38-year-old man flagged down those deputies because something was wrong with his truck. deputies told him that his truck wasn't registered and he'd get a citation. they say he started fighting with them so they took him into custody. they were on the way to the hospital to get medical clearance when he became unresponsive. that man died in the hospital. it is 5:56. we're just a few weeks away from the beginning of summer and pool season and doctors say it's a good time to remind parents

about a very rare and scary type of drowning, dry drowning. it happens when you stentally inhale water in your nose or mouth and causes a spasm in the throat and you can't breathe. the doctor refers to it as aspiration pneumonia. it can happen when you're not even in the pool. >> actually see it more commonly in the elderly who have trouble swallowing and their wall lowing mechanisms don't work well and they as spir rate and getting saliva down in their lungs. >> he says symptoms can also come from something as simple as drinking water too fast. so what do you do? keep a close eye on your kids when they are swimming. if they have any kind of breathing problems, that's a sign. you may need to get help. imagine being able to get in a concert or event using your face instead of a ticket. ticketmaster wants to make that a reality.
