while turn up the ac. this morning just stepping out the door, it's a nice refreshing start as we look outside in san jose with our temperatures in the low 50s and as we to sunnyvale, 6 degrees and low 70s which is about normal. some of the inland areas once again low 80s. i'll talk more about that in just a few minutes and mike says there's less clater in the try valley. >> we had a lot of clatter because of a gravel spill. not pleasant in the morning or any time. south bay and peninsula show typical pattern, light build for san jose. over here, light clearing and still flow through pleasant ton but 680 clears up a bit as they have removed the gravel spill. over here we're seeing less slowing 880 down through san leandro and union city. the crash is cleared over off to the shoulder at industrial. not really anything more than a distraction. and really relatively smooth dry. we saw an early backup in the cash lanes at the bay bridge

toll plaza. this is what's different. fast track lanes are starting to move better and so are cash lanes to the left. the early buildup will result in an earlier clearing. not saying it's clear but we're watching a lighter flow over last 20 minutes. back to you. >> a new development in the republican party sure to make the gubernatorial debate even more significant. own the weekend the california republican party announced it was not endorsing any candidate for governor. >> sharon katsuda joins us where the debate will take place. this do you think could impact the primary election? >> reporter: it's going to impact it a lot. this is where the debate tomorrow night is going to take place here at the california theater and do you have one of these? this is a sample ballot. this one is mine. but two bay area counties that san mateo and nap at a county participating in a new voting

system. we'll talk about that aologiclit later. voters will start to mail in ballots starting today. at the california republican party convention in san diego this weekend, neither of the two top gop candidates for governor got the party's endorsement. san diego businessman john cox got 55% of the vote and less than 60% needed to get the party's endorsement. travis allen got 40% of the vote, 4% voted for no endorsement at all. >> it's really interesting, it will be complicated to see what happens moving forward. >> if there's any opportunity to make an impression it comes tuesday night. >> reporter: the two top vote getters from the june 5th primary regardless of party will face each other in a runoff for governor and no endorsement from the state gop could mean the november general election would be between the top two democrats and of course we had one month

shooting in san francisco. police say someone shot two men near guerrero and cesar chavez. we're hearing the shooting might be connected to a funeral and told the victims will survive. police have not made any arrest. >> today we're hoping to learn more about an officer involved shooting in san jose. this one happened over the weekend as police were responding to a home invasion robbery. bob re-dell joins us live to explain what led up to the shooting and what police are doing today, good morning, bob. >> good morning, laura, we hope to learn more details this afternoon when san jose police chief will hold a news conference here at police headquarters at 3:00 this afternoon. trying to give us -- hopefully more details about what happened. here's what we know so far. this happened early yesterday morning. there were two people who broke into a unit in an apartment complex on the 500 block of south 10th street in what police believe was a home invasion.

one officer open fire. witnesses heard four to five gunshots as police searched for the two suspects. one was reportedly armed with a gun and refused to drop that weapon and police eventually caught that person and their accomplice. two suspects in custody, no one was injured during the shooting. reporting live, bob re-dell, "today in the bay." thank you very much, bob. >> now to a developing situation in hawaii. eruptions are becoming more dangerous and more disruptive. lava shooting 300 feet in the air when a tense fis sure opened up. some evacuees grabbed essentials and pets and other areas could soon be in danger. people who left they are homes say they feel helpless. >> my neighbor larry, his house is burning down, it's real.

it's hitting. but it's okay. >> so far reports of injuries none so far. kilauea is the world's most active volcano. might see more driverless cars on bay area roads. take leaders will take an important step in the future of automated vehicles, holding a special hearing about car safety. starts at 2:30 this afternoon in sacramento but it will also be live streemd because of growing concern about driveless cars. no decisions will be made how to regulate those cars. with that warmer weather, park rangers remind you to be aware of rattlesnakes, just like people, rattles tend to be more active in parts when the weather heats up. east bay regional park leaders suggest hiking with a friend to stay safe. also, keep your eye on the ground in front of you and look under those logs and rocks before you have a seat. if you do, if you get a bikte, stay calm and call 911. >> a lot of people going out for

hikes, good head's up. as we look at our time at 6:08. a live look outside in emeryville, clear skies and refreshing start as we go to narcotic necessiti martinez, it's going to heat up quekly, 66 degrees and if you have something to do outside, best to get it done early, low 80s hitting the high temperature at about 3:00 to 4:00 today. and we'll be up to 84 degrees in antioch today and 80 in napa. 69 in san francisco and 78 in palo and san jose. the temperature trend for the day coming up and mike has an update on the crash in san jose. >> i do. it is a minor crash and it was the off ramp, only the off ramp from northbound 101 affected right now by the crash activity. if you don't use that xilexit, you're fine. minor slowing.

over here slower in concord and westbound highway 4 out of bay point and moving towards 242, the build now towards walnut creek. that's your portion of cocoa county seeing the build coming off the bridge. you're all right. and upper east shore about the same latitude starting to slow towards richmond. the richmond/san rafael bridge seeing more traffic here over to the east bay. no major problems here. fast track lanes seeing a little bit more traffic than in the cash lanes. that's what we're seeing right now. oakland moves nicely, north 880 past the coliseum and southbound moves nicely with headlights and 238 things slow down towards the san mateo bridge. back to you. thank you, mike. >> coming up next on "today in the bay," southwest scare, all new this morning, the latest incident for the airline and how the driver of this truck is doing this morning. safety regulators say elon musk hung up on them.

outside in palo alto. our temperatures start out cool at 10:00 we'll be at 59 degrees and then making it into the mid-70s today, hitting the high temperature at about 4:00 to 5:00 and a lot of sunshine warmer today but then cooler as we go into the middle of the week. we'll check out that mother's day forecast coming up in less than five minutes. and 25 minutes is the time registered from highway 4 to the bay bridge. a little bit of slowing through richmond. it's actually pretty pleasant after an early backup at the toll plaza. a new report for the tri-valley. we'll sort that out coming up. a big happy monday to you. the stock market made big moves to the positive on friday. even after a sbha meek jobs report. great news on unemployment. that drops under 4% for the first time in 18 years. the job growth was only average. tesla back in the news, bloomberg says tesla ceoelon musk hung up on ntsb regulators

during a phone call following the deadly crash and fire of a tesla model x. this came before musk's curt and erratic behavior with analysts during the all important earnings call where he called questions boring and bone headed. he's also making fun of one of the world's richest men, warren buffett sending out tweets challenging the things buffett has said. this one is a mostly one sided tweet war. shares of apple will open this morning at an all time high. remember last week apple said it would spend $100 billion to buy back its own shares. now when a company buys back its own shares, they cease to exist. it means the remaining shares still in investors hands are worth more. democrats in the house want to release thousands of fake ads and fake poechts that ran on facebook during the election. a lot were being passed around about things like pat i don't thinkism and racial issues were actually created by russians.

the house intelligence committee has about 3,000 of those fake ads, we haven't seen them yet. we know in one case they were able to use fake ads and put them on people's facebook pages to get them motivated to go to a rallies in houston, texas, one across from the other. they set up both. people were yelling at each other not realizing they were both brought there by the russians. >> crazy, isn't that amazing. >> 6:15 right now. new this morning, yet another scare for southwest airlines. take a look at this closely. you can actually see the truck underneath an airplane. and it happened at baltimore washington airport. luckily no one was hurt and southwest is only stating the obvious. a truck hit a plane and pulled into the gate at baltimore

washington international airport in maryland. if you're an amtrak commuter who likes to cut close, don't get caught off guard. happening today, schedules adjust for three capitol corridor runs. each run adjusts five minutes, one morning train out of auburn now leaves five minutes earlier to bay area based eastbound lanes. now leave their stations five minutes later. adventure and survivor of bear grils is back. he takes celebrities into the great outdoors. first up is joseph gordon levitt, travels to kenya and the thing he was most worried about was a poor choice of food. >> he gets people to eat pretty nasty things and you don't know what kind of -- it's one thing to eat the animal, it's another thing to think about the tiny little microorganisms that colonyize that animal and what

francisco. looks like it will stay clear as we go through the day. 7-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. you can take a look at that and your microclimate what's going on today. you step out the door and this is what it feels like. it is 52 degrees in fairfield, also in san jose and it's 50 degrees in livermore. we have upper 40s in oakland and 52 right now in half moon bay. and then we get the kids out the door with temperatures in the 40s and 50s around the bay area and san jose as they head out for recess, it's going to be much more comfortable with 60s in the mid-70s as you walk home from school. it's a warm start to the week and you'll be able to cool off this evening at the coliseum if you're going to the a's game, it will be 62 degrees at first pitch and then some upper 50s for the rest of the game. definitely a nice warm jacket with those breezy winds but it's going to be warm today as we look at what's going to happen in the south bay and south county in san jose, up to 78 degrees and 82 in gilroy.

east bay also 782 in livermore and in hayward, expect a high of 76 degrees. up to 69 in san mateo and san francisco upper 60s to low 70s north bay up to 82 in sonoma and santa rosa looking at a high of 83 degrees. i'm watching these clouds and seeing what's happening out there as we widen out the view. low pressure really spread out and as it moves in for the middle of the week, won't bring us any rain but we'll see an increase in cloud cover and increase our onshore flow bringing down temperatures a few degrees and as we get the cool air off the ocean. hopefully you have a great weekend. our friends sent me this picture of the sunset in american canyon last night. i love to see those photos and you is thend this them to me. tag me in your weather pictures and you may see it shown on the air. the forecast for the next seven days, 80 today but then by wednesday it will be a breezy

75. look at your mother's day weekend forecast, before you make plans, look at that. it's going to be 87 degrees on sunday. now you're hearing about a moisture cramotor vehicle crash. >> i am. warmer today and into the weekend we'll probably see more motorcycles out there, the warmer weather does invite that as far as your commute. but also that's tougher to see. make that extra second as you look around and change lanes. over here at the south bay and peninsula, looking great. the motorcycle crash south of the dublin interchange. sounds like everything quickly got to the shoulder with no major injuries and we're tracking a little build towards the interchange. recovery across the earlier gravel spill, 880 clears past the earlier crash at industrial. no major backups and that's a great flow of traffic. the bay bridge started early and kind of held steady around the berkeley curve. from the toll plaza camera, i can tell you fast track is

crazy story out of florida. if you know anyone who uses vape pens, even a teenager out there. first responders say a man actually died after his vaping pen exploded. it triggered a fire in the man's home. the firefighters don't know if the explosion killed him or knocked him unconscious leaving him trapped by the flames. >> the lithium batteries start to heat up and heat up too quickly or too much and then they give off gas and it ignites or explodes. >> authorities believe the autopsy will determine an exact cause of death. fema is causing this the first death tied to an exploding vape pen. if you think you're getting a lot of robotcalls these days, you're right. "new york times" is reporting there were more than 3 billion auto mated calls this past month. that 9,000 more than last april. good news here, congress and regulators are aware of that problem and they've been holding

we're heading into the upper 70s and low 80s for inland avenue. livermore 82 and 73 in oakland. 83 in santa rosa and san jose at 78 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in seven minutes and mike has been tracking those issues of spots on the road. >> also, have to plan summer camp with my wife. not with for why wife, with the for the kids. we wanted to show you we're slowing slowing through san martin, there may be a disabled vehicle as you head up in tlu that congestion, i'll get that update and reports coming up. meanwhile highway 17 was moving smoothly and that build over the last few minutes. we've seen things pack in over here towards san jose and 101 at 680. there may be something going on north of here and this is really slow compared to what we typically see at 6:30.

580 in dublin, a funder bender reported. i'll check on both of those scenes. back to you. 6:32. thousands of medical workers are on strike today. potentially impacting your care at major hospitals across the state and right here in the bay area. we're talking about workers at uc medical center, pete suratos is live in san francisco. pete, certainly when something like this happens, a lot of people kind of get fearful of what could happen if they need medical attention. how is this going to impact the patients? >> good morning, it will impact you if you have to get your appointment rescheduled or surgery rescheduled or postponed as a result of the three-day strike calling on service workers throughout the whole d.c. system. i want to point to across the street and as you can see they are walking around in circles not too long ago. now they are in the area picketing and we're expecting

this to take place all day long for the next three days. there's going to be a big later today can kamala harris and gave vin newsom. let's jump into impacts of this three day strike. 800 cancer appointments will be postponed including the 280 chemotherapy infusions as well as 300 nonemergency surgeries. now i want to point out the purpose of the strike is to increase wages for service workers. that includes janitors and cooks, security guards and truck drivers and even gardeners in some cases. they are saying when it comes to wage increases that a union didn't want to comment on specific numbers citing other issues such as outsourcing a job to get paid cost of living, those are the big issues, the california nurse's association will be a part of this strike come tuesday and wednesday. now in the past half hour i did

speak with a union worker about the issues when it comes to wages, here's what she had to say. >> you know, folks we're toek talking about here on the picket line are housekeepers, dish washers and bus drivers who make wages that hover around $40,000 a year. here in california and we're right here in the bay area, so what we're asking for is not the kind of increases we've seen administrators at uc make but simply to make up with the cost of living. >> taking you back out here live, you've got horns honking and people drive by. you can see folks protesting. the service workers out here about 80 or so people out here right now from the ucf medical center and expecting to see more than 10,000 workers over the three-day period with this strike. that big rally set to take place here during the strike at 12:00 p.m. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the

bay." >> a lot of people talking about this one. thank you. >> if you're a college student dealing with depression or anxiety, students are likely not getting the help they need. protests at cal state east bay in hayward will address the lack of mental health counselors today. there's only one mental health counselor for every 2500 students. >> new this morning, a busy night for berkeley police, just blocks apart. both ever these stories pretty wild. a man thought he was meeting a woman for a date but this was all a setup. two people robbed him on hay street near dwight and mlk. blocks away, a young couple stepped in to stop a robbery as it was happening and that suspect punched the boyfriend and the girl pepper sprayed the crook. >> 6:35 in san jose. police say someone shot in the head in the area of story road and jackson avenue. it happened early sunday

morning. investigators say a man died. police identified the victim or the suspect. they are hoping witnesses to come forward. a follow-up on a disabled dog stolen in san francisco. a couple of weeks ago. you may remember phyllo deaf and blind in one eye and in dire need of his cancer medication. his owner told us that the woman who reportedly stole that dog ended up selling him to someone near the plaza. this in oakland. so the search is now focused on that area. the owner and friends are offering a $5,000 reward. this is a trip you wouldn't forget. passengers on a carnival cruiseship reeling from flooding that happened in the middle of the ocean. take a look at these videos. water was gushing into the rooms and hallways after a pipe broke. it happened on the carnival cruise ship dream. they say it was more like a nightmare. >> i was kind of scared.

it's a cool start as we get the kids out the door in livermore for the school day forecast. heading to school as you drop them off, low 50s and then picking them up, 75 degrees with some sunshine. and we're heading into the low 80s in livermore today. 83 in concord, napa 80 degrees. san francisco, 69 and 78 in palo alto and in san jose. as we take a live look outside in san jose, you do need layers to get dressed this morning with a jacket and then short sleeves because it will warm up so fast by this afternoon. it will be basically like wearing summer geerl with a t-shirt and shorts and sunglasses and a necessity with the bright sunshine out there. as we look at what's happening in the pacific. we see the swirl of clouds and low pressure as that moves in for the middle of the week. it won't bring us any rain but will increase our onshore flow and that breeze and school ocean breezes causes our temperatures to dip a few degrees and we'll
