i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news this morning and the swift downfall of new york's attorney general, once seen as a leader in the me too movement. the headlines say it all. eric schneiderman now resigning from office just hours after he was accused of abusing four women in a new yorker article. according to the report, the women say schneiderman subjected them to nonconsensual physical violence, including being slapped in the face, choked and spit on by schneiderman, sometimes while in bed. two of the women spoke on the record saying they eventually sought medical attention for their injuries, and they also detail claims of schneiderman's heavy drinking and use of prescription drugs. schneiderman denies the allegations, telling "the new yorker" in the privacy of intimate relationships, i have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. i have not assaulted anyone. i've never engaged in nonconsensual sex. >> schneiderman's ex-wife also coming to his defense saying he has always been someone of the

highest character, outstanding values and a loving father. i find it impossible to believe these allegations are true. still, calls for schneiderman's resignation came quickly including from peter king, governor andrew cuomo and the national organization for women. just three hours after the allegations first surfaced, schneiderman announced he will step down effective at the end of business today. he again contested the claims, saying while the allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office's work at this critical time. overnight the manhattan district attorney's office confirmed it has opened an investigation into the allegations. today president donald trump plans to reveal his highly anticipated critical decision on the iran nuclear deal just days ahead of the looming may 12th deadline. president trump has until saturday to decide whether to renew the 120-day waiver that lifts sanctions on iran in return or the limitations on the country's nuclear program.

both iran and israel made strong statements about the deal. but the consequences if the u.s. were to pull out of the six-nation agreement remain in doubt. ali aruzi is live in iran with the latest details. ai, good morning. >> reporter: hello, frances. well, iran is working up to the news that president trump plans to announce his much anticipated decision on the iran nuclear deal, and i can tell you, frances, there is a palpable sense of anxiety here. now the president has been warning that he won't suspend oil sanctions on may 12th unless europe and other partners revise the terms of the accord. now despite a flurry of visits from european leaders, that doesn't seem to have happened. now if the president reimposes sanctions today or by may 12th, it will be on iran's oil sector. and then there is another round of sanctions on july 12th, broader sanctions which will come up which will hit iran's financial institutions and banks and make it very difficult for

foreign countries to buy iranian oil without falling afoul of u.s. sanctions. however, he could waive the sanctions again for another three months and give the europeans a formula that suits the president. but that seems unlikely. but we'll find out at 2:00 this afternoon. frances? >> certainly many watching that one. ali, thank you. a key senator has come out saying he will be voting against the president's nominee to lead the cia, gina haspel. after meeting with haspel in a area behind closed doors, quote, this is about trust and the public is not being afforded an open and honest debate about the nominee. heinrich claims haspel failed to satisfactory answer questions about her background in the cia. the 30-year agency veteran has faced deep skepticism ahead of tomorrow's confirmation hearing, and now she make herself way through capitol hill, urgently looking for support. she'll have to gain another yea vote after heinrich's

disapproval. she is expected to meet with jack reed today ahead of tomorrow's confirmation hearing. today marks primary day across several states with the political world keeping an eye on several stayses. senate and governor races in ohio, indiana. but it's west virginia that keeping an eye on as the president injects himself into that race like never before. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: hi there, frances. good morning. in this case the president stepped in not to support a candidate, but against a candidate, a controversial republican, don blankenship, president trump weighing in, telling west virginia voters not to vote for blankenship who, for one, has attacked the majority leader here mitch mcconnell calling him cocaine mitch, making other public comments that were considered deeply personal against mcconnell's wife, incendiary comments during this primary. republicans here in washington argue that blankenship would

essentially split the vote and push people in west virginia to support the democrat, causing them to lose support. here president trump tweeting to the great people of west virginia, we have together a really great chance to keep making a big difference. problem is don blankenship, currently running for senate, can't win the general in your state, no way. remember alabama? vote for representative jenkins or ag morrissey, the others in that primary. well, blankenship had this response for president trump. >> we all really like president trump's policies, but we know that he doesn't get things right. i mean, he recommended that people vote for a guy that was a basically accused of pedophilia in alabama. it's really sad that the pressure on the president and the misinformation and the untruths that he has been given would cause him to suggest that you vote for two guys that have failed you.

because i will not fail you. >> once again, national politics having an impact in this state race. democrats also watching very closely. frances? >> it's going to be a big night when it comes to shows. tracie, thank you. hawaii's big island remains under a state of emergency this morning, battered by a trifecta of natural disasters. earthquakes, lava flows, and toxic gas emissions. as many as 12 fissures have exploded since the kauea volcano erupted last week. official says the volcanic activity has subsided for now but could resume any time. lava fountains continue to creep into neighborhoods in the puna district, engulfing at least 35 structure, vehicles and everything in its wake. the ongoing efforts have forced nearly 2,000 from their homes. residents allowed only brief visits during valuables to gather their valuables. but some say it's not worth the risk. >> we had to cross cracks in in the pavement and steam shooting up. and it is really foggy and the

vegetation all dying. it was depressing. >> so far no deaths or injuries reported. but the island remains on high alert. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest. >> reporter: peril in paradise. fiery rivers of molten lava grow as hawaii's volcano continues to grow. shooting hundreds of feet into the air and venting toxic gas. more than two dozen homes swallowed. ray carlson's house overrun by a curtain of fire. >> the guy next door to me, there is lava covering his whole house. and the guy across the street? gone. >> reporter: with fountains of lava, rock and soot violently exploding out of control over a 24-hour span, the earth rattled here nearly 500 times, the largest quake a massive 6.9. >> i don't even know if my house is standing. >> reporter: among the most active volcanos in the world, kilauea has erupted multiple times. miles away at least ten massive cracks in the ground, fissures

>> attorney general jeff sessions announcing a tough new immigration policy that will go into effect soon. parents and children caught illegally crossing the border will be separated rather than be contained a families together. it's already getting pushback in washington. still, the department of homeland security says some 700 children have already been separated from their parents since october. the president of the university of florida is apologizing to students for what he is addressing as inappropriate physical actions taken at a recent commencement. several students were rushed off the stage for dancing as they received their diplomas. here is nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: it's supposed to be a moment you never forget, but for these university of florida students, graduation went from a celebration to an insult. >> i didn't expect that at all. i definitely felt dehumanized and criminalized. >> reporter: the two say they were among the students rushed

now to today's top stories. first lady melania trump steps out of her husband's shadow to announce her first initiative, teaching children to put kindness first, particularly on social media. but this morning we are learning she has gotten herself into her own minor scandal with charges of plagiarism hitting her office again. the pamphlet she released on children's online safety had an uncanny resemblance to a 2014 appearance to one published by the federal trade commission. you can see the first page, mrs. trump's on the left and the ftc's on the right. and here is the second page and then the third. now, remember, mrs. trump faced plagiarism charges back in 2016 when parts of her speech at the
