good morning and thanks for beginning your morning with us. >> let's get to the forecast. you can already see the temperature creeping up. how are we looking today? >> a warm day still, warmer than normal and we're going to keep the sunshine so it's going to be great. we start out a few clouds drifting by and as we go to martinez it's going to heat up. look at the temperatures going from 64 at 8:00 to 81 at 1:00 this afternoon. and then also as we check out our school day forecast, heading to the south bay mid-50s at 7:00 and then mid-70s for this afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead and mike, now you have two crashes? >> yeah, kari, on your temperature readings i like the green and yellow. don't like the red either on brake lights. all the way across the san mateo bridge. still have a crash blocking the two left lanes, only the right lane gets by, jammed from the flat section over to the foster city side of the high wise. as we look at the map, that's one section which is a slow drive really developing now.

still waiting for chp to let us know when they can clear that semitruck which sounds like it's involved, the dumbarton is the alternate. that's the first crash. the second crash is northbound 880 towards davis, we have two right lanes blocked by some sort of debris. roadway hazard, there's slowing from 238, why you want to take the dumbarton bridge if you're avoiding san mateo bridge. those are the only two problems right now. we'll send it back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 5:01 right now. we are just hours away from the much anticipated gubernatorial debate airing here live on nbc by area. the stage is set at the california theater in san jose and now all we need are the candidates, look at the work being done right there right now. you won't see jerry brown, governor there, he hit his term limit but this still could be a night full of fireworks as six candidates work to earn your vote. scott mcgrew is live in the theater this morning at what we

can expect. this is goin to be a big night. >> it'soing to be a big night. it's a beautifu morning in downtown san jose as well. you can see the marquis with our make on it right across from me at the california theater. tonight's debate will be broadcast on nbc bay area and indeed statewide both on television and on radio. now, there are going to be six candidates on stage taking questions from our raj mathai moderated by nbc "meet the press" chuck todd. six candidates, gavin newsom, john chang, john cox, a republican, democratic easton, republican travis allen and finally antonio villa ra goes is a, a democrat. we're mixing democrats and republicans together because of california's very unique system which has the top two primary -- top two vote getters in june will then move on to november.

she told police the dog wasn't hurt and said foster hit her hard but not that hard. she recently reversed her story saying he never hit her and her wounds were from a previous fight with another woman. foster is suspended from the team act tists until his case is resolved. the investigation continues after a tragic crash in san lorenzo, an ambulance ended up on its side there, colliding with an audi, the 74-year-old woman being transported has died. two paramedics and a firefighter are also hurt. the accident happened at the intersection of lurer yan boulevards. they had lights and sirens on at the time of the crash. new this morning, growing dangers for all of us when it comes to cars. the institute for highway safety has a new study this morning that says cars hitting and killing pedestrians is becoming more common.

bob redell joins us live in concord with a look at this new report. what do people need to know before they even hit the road? >> reporter: well, laura, many of these pedestrian fatalities involve suvs or fast moving cars happen when it's dark and away from ip ter sections and busy roads like street boulevard here in concord. you want to wait for the light and want to cross the road at intersections or crosswalks trying to get to the other side. the insurance institute for highway safety calls the recent study a wake-up call for pedestrians and their research found pedestrian fatalities in the united states is climbing to a 28-year high. in 2016 almost 6,000 people were hit and killed by cars and that's a 46% increase from 2009 when pedestrian deaths were at their lowest. the institute suggests that cities and counties improve the lighting for pedestrians and add

more crossing islands and more crosswalks mid block so in between the intersections and pedestrians, there's something we can do as well. >> not wearing dark clothing at night, possibly including some sort of reflectivity as part of the cloething of the all of thee things are important and can make a difference. >> reporter: the institute acknowledges that drivers distracted by cell phones have played a role in pedestrian deaths but there is not enough data to figure out how much impact those devices have had. reporting live here in concord bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 5:07. anyone -- you go ahead and take this one. >> sorry about that. anyone with an appointment at uc medical facilities should make sure that there's still a go. happening today the second day of three-day strikes. some 12,000 appointments are already postponed but those cancellations are case by case. the service workers are seeking

a 10% pay hike over the next five years. they also want their jobs to be better protected from outsourcing. it is 5:07 right now. new this morning, some call it neighborly, others righting and old wrong but palo alto leaders reportedly agreed to give the gift of water. the recipient is east palo alto, functioned with a water shortage for decades. council members approved shifting a half million gallons to east palo alto every day at no charge. leaders say they are correcting a historical inak quit. this the puc allocated water east palo alto wasn't incorporated yet and received a much lower daily a lotment. if you love boating on the bay, you may want to pay close attention to a hearing happening today in san francisco. supervisors will vote on keeping clipper cove open to everyone. the coast sits between treasure island and also where the city's only community sailing center

thought. people probably thought it was going to be for the san mateo bridge which is still an issue. i'll talk about that, but the traffic alert comes over here from chp and san leandro, saying you got your right three lanes blocked now and it is blocked by a wooden pallet strewn across the roadway. only left two lanes are open northbound coming off the castro valley off 238 and heading towards san leandro. we see this backup forming quickly. sigalert and traffic alert declared because they think it's going to take a while to hand move those fapallets and they closed the lanes so the work can be done. be very careful traveling north out of san leandro and towards downtown oakland. heading across from hayward towards foster city, we have an issue blocking two lanes. one lane is open across the san mateo bridge. high rise jammed up from the flat section and dumbarton is an easy alternate for you. light traffic getting across the span and we see that the flat section is jammed up right here all the way across the span.

we're coming up on 5:14 on your tuesday morning. let's take a live look outside in san jose this morning. as we start out with clear skies and good morning sunnyvale, we'll be at 61 degrees at 9:00. normally we're at 73. we're going to just above that for an afternoon high. it's going to be a really nice day. a little bit of a cooldown before we warm up. more on that in less than five minutes. >> a quick change, shaame shot. all lanes cleared in the last few. the san mateo bridge is clear again but we follow the traffic alert into san leandro. >> thanks, kari and mike. we continue to monitor an earthquake that was in southern california, actually near palm springs out in the desert, a 4.6 that happened earlier this morning. probably within the last 45 minutes or so. reports of some shaking in the l.a. area as well. no reports of damage so far.

5:14 right now. new overnight, lava continues to spew out of mt. kilauea. officials say it's not going to end any time soon. nearly 2,000 people have already left their homes. more than 30 homes or buildings have been destroyed so far. we could find out today if the santa clara valley water district will support governor brown's twin tunnels plans and. governor brown wants to use the tunnels to send water to southern california. if south bay water leaders do join the project, people could see a spike in their water bills. and breaking news, some top bray area tech executives are headed to the white house and will talk artificial intelligence with president trump. that's the word this morning from the "washington post." facebook and google and intel and or raquel will send someone on thursday.

the start of an important 3-day for android based developers starts at shorelynampy theater in mountain view. the thousands of software developers will get the latest on the newest systems and the mainstays include home and google play. privacy concerns are also running high these days in light of the cambridge analytica scandal. more business and tech news. people are excited about electric cars. >> we turn to leslie picker, live at cnbc world headquarters this morning. good morning, leslie. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. wall street could be in wait and see mode as markets around the world await president trump's decision on the iran nuclear deal later today. stocks closed well off the highs after the president tweeted he would make an announcement this afternoon. oil prices are pulling back from

3.5 year highs. they say if the u.s. withdraws, that could hurt oil exports further tightening global supplies. the dow rose 9 4 points to 24,357 and nasdaq closing up. americans are getting charged up about electric cars. a new survey from aaa finds 20% of people say their next vehicle will be electric. that's up from 15% last year. this could bode well for tesla which is ramping up production of its first mass market electric cars model 3 as well as gm's chevy volt and nissan leaf. one reason for the growing enthusiasm may be they are not as concerned any more not having enough juice to get from point a to point b. microsoft announced a new feature to let you pay your bills inside outlook. they are integrating the new payment service microsoft pay with the e-mail app. that of course will allow you to make payments through messages without having to switch to other apps or sites.

the new tool will be rolled out to outlook users in the coming months. back over to you. thanks, leslie. what a story for one alabama family when their 13-year-old boy had a bad accident two months ago and doctors were sure he would die. >> this is an amazing story. he not only survived but he's now talking about his story. >> i'm that one kid that can say i died six times and here i am. >> here he is. many called trenton mckinley a miracle boy. doctors say even if he did survive he would never be the same. two months ago he was riding a trailer behind a go cart driven by a friend. it crashed and he had seven skull fractures. for a time his vital signs flat lined. >> they told me that i wasn't going to ever being normal again, i would be a vegetable. i don't really seem like a vegetable, do i? >> little sense of humor there.

from antioch to concord and frid tri-valley upper 70s. 69 in san mateo. those winds picking up later today, it's going to be gusty in san francisco, winds coming in from the west sustained at 18 miles per hour. and then for the north bay, quite breezy there too with some upper 70s for santa rosa. if you're heading out to the hiking trails today around los gatos, this is a look at the los gatos creek trail. we'll have a cool start with mid-50s but it will be clearing up and then at 10:00, 65 degrees. mid to upper 70s today then those winds picking up for the evening as this area of low pressure approaches, it's not going to bring us any rain. it's been fairly dry but we will have an increase in cloud cover later tonight and then it will be clearing out as we warm up towards the weekend. if you're making plans for the weekend for mother's day around concord, mother's day brunch forecast keeps it clear, low 60s

during the morning but overall a beautiful day. go to brunch and maybe go to the park. we're going to be heating up as we head towards the end of the week for the inland areas and we'll be in the upper 80s for friday and then still looking at warm weather for saturday, much more comfortable by sunday and san francisco low 60s for the next couple of days and 70 by this friday. mike, do you have good news? >> i've got both. some good news and some same news. the good news is the san mateo bridge had cleared, that's much better, quickly getting across from the hayward towards foster city. the same news is this traffic alert northbound 880 and davis, we have your right three lanes blocked by pallets, wooden pallets strewn across the roadway. 580 is much better. san leandro boulevard east of the freeway and doolittle drive west of there, farther north and you should be okay. that's the short stretch into san leandro that's jammed up right now. i want to show you also as we

"today in the bay's" scott mcgrew joins us live this morning with some of the things we could learn through tonight's debate. good morning, scott. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, it's going to be an important debate to watch as you make the decision as to who you want as the next california governor. you can see the marquis behind me here lit up at the california theater which has been the home of so many apple announcements. tonight our chuck todd from "meet the press" will moderate a debate with raj mathai asking many of the questions, a debate among six candidates for california governor. let's show them to you. they are gavin newsom and john chang, both democrats, john cox, a republican, democrat easton as well, republican travis allen and finally antonio villaragosa a democrat.

trump prepares to meet with north korea's leerd in the coming weeks. in washington, the president is expected to announce his long awaited decision on the nuclear deal with iran. >> mr. trump says it's the worst deal he's ever seen and is widely expected to withdraw the u.s. from the agreement. senators on both sides of the aisle are questioning the move. >> i hope he doesn't. because i think it would be adverse to our national security interest. >> exiting would give them an excuse not to comply. >> the second senator there is outgoing arizona republican jeff flake. allies like france and great britain and germany are all urging president trump to stay committed to the deal. >> at 5:36, a santa clara county judge facing a recall election is set to finally break his silence this morning. the recall was organized after opponents accuse judge aaron perski of handing down too

lenient a sentence. roz is live with what we can learn today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning this palo alto courthouse behind me is where the controversial trial took place that judge perski presided over. he's set to break his silence trying to get message out to voters ahead of the june 5th primary. judge aaron persky has been a sa santa chair ra judge since 2003 and came under fire after sentencing brock turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a young woman on campus. that short sentence outraged many and then activists launched a recall campaign and it took nearly two years to collect signatures and overcome the legal hurdles to get the recall on the june pal lot. persky reporters argue it would be a bad precedent and threaten judicial independence. if voters approve it, judge

persky would be the first california judge to be recalled from office in 86 years. now, this is being closely watched around the country especially in light of the me too development, again, judge persky set to have a news conference at 10:30 this morning and will answer reporters questions and get the message he wants to get out to the voter and we'll bring that to you later this morning. i'm roz plater, nbc bay area news. thank you, roz. and developing now for you out of sonoma county, deputies are trying to figure out how two people and a dog ended up dead inside a petaluma home. their deaths are suspicious this morning and investigators found that couple after doing a welfare check at their home in roplar road. pete suratos is live in petaluma. what are neighbors saying about the victims? >> reporter: good morning, to you, marcus, neighbors told our crews that they believe the couple was in the 50s and lived in the home 20 years and mostly

kept to themselves. you see over my right shoulder, snoem that county sheriff's office still manning this area what was the scene yesterday. they are call these deaths suspicion at this time. we'll show you the video from yesterday. this is when they showed up roughly around 2:30 p.m. you can see even folks walking around in hazmat suits and according to the sheriff's department they were called to the home on roblar road after 2:00 p.m. after the sister of the woman who lives in the home hadn't heard from her in about a month. she drove by the home and saw mi mail piling up and tall grass and during a welfare check they found a man and woman dead inside the home along with a dead dog and one surviving dog. the authorities are trying to piece together exactly what led to the deaths inside that home. >> we kind of went into this thinking murder suicide. we don't know but we're going to slow down and really process the

scene closely to make sure. >> reporter: sonoma county sheriff's department believes the couple died several days ago. if you have any information to help with the case, contact the sheriff's department. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> right now the commute is just starting to kick in and that's why i'm concerned about three spots right now. we have this issue northbound 880 at san leandro, and take a look up here, the traffic alert continues with the right three lanes blocked by wooden pallets across the lane. still got crews clearing, west 5801 useable by the big rigs and jammed up for the nimitz. the second issue san mateo bridge, the earlier crash, the alert cleared from the high rise, another crash in the same area. more slowing so use the dumbarton as an alternate to that. the bay bridge looks lighter than we often see but started

kicking in now off the berkeley curve moving smoothly but metering lights are on. three spots to watch. >> we're also watching the forecast for the weekend. and there's a big weekend. mother's day weekend. >> go open. >> flowers and -- yes, ordering flowers and making reservations and all of that stuff. better get on that as you make plans. >> made my own reservations yesterday. that's what you got to do. it's going to be for the inland area. still very warm. 86 degrees. 82 degrees for the bay. and a nice comfortable coast at 76 degrees. it's still going to be warm for the valleys on sunday and all clear sunshine as we go into the afternoon. if you're making plans ahead to napa valley, it's going to be bright sunny and up to 86 degrees on friday and saturday. feeling a little bit more comfortable on sunday, up to 76 degrees. i'll have a look at today's

once again. as we go to willow glen, only 52 degrees at 7:00 and quickly warming into the mid-60s later this morning. we're heading into the low 70s today, a little cooler than it was yesterday but overall a really nice day. we'll talk about the rest of the week and a warmer weekend in less than five minutes. >> and looking at the richmond/san rafael bridge, things are starting to build up over here. the big problem is in san leandro towards oakland because of the nimitz. the other side of the bay, palo alto moves smoothly for 101. it's quarter to 6:00, new details in the golden state killer case. now that the mystery appears to be solved, some wonder if the suspect had help. first off the sacramento sheriff's department is still 100% convinced the east area rapist acted alone but the sacramento bee spoke with a former bay area investigator paul holes who cracked the case,
