towards the nimitz valley, 238, right in the jam, right up towards davis where we still have right three lanes blocked by pallets spilled across the road. on the bottom of a shipment there, they are strewn across the roadway, cleanup still going on. away from there southbound a crash at a street on the shoulder, a little distraction. out of castro valley, take west 580. in hayward, we have this ebonying and flowing, the second or third of crashes heading towards foster city. it's a distraction, there's the build across 92 over the peninsula. the south bay, a nice light drive. back to you. >> we're a few hours away from the much anticipated gubernatorial debate here on nbc

bay area. the stage is set at the ca california theater in san jose. jerry brown has hit his term limits. >> scott mcgrew is live at the theater this morning and what can we expect from the six candidates debating tonight. >> well, each one will have to try to get their voice heard and certainly all of them will be taking on gavin newsom. you can see the marquis behind me as they get ready. if you haven't been paying attention, we have a primary coming up in june and there are six candidates who want to make it through the primary, all six will be at this debate tonight. let me list them out for you, i mentioned gavin newsom one of them, john chiang is another, both democrats, john cox is a republican, democrat easton, travis allen as well and finally antonio villariagosa a democrat.

we're mixing together republicans and democrats because california has a top two primary system where the two top vote winners in june go onto the general election in november. our own chuck todd is moderating tonight's debate and we'll hear from chuck coming up at 6:30. laura and marcus? >> thank you. we have team coverage as we're getting ready for tonight's debate. political analyst larry gerston joins us live this morning. >> this is a big debate tonight. people need to pay attention. why is it so important? >> two things, first of all, it's absentee ballot time. >> right. >> two thirds of the people vote between now and june 5th. today is the day to start this debate. perfect timing and second point, statewide, 12 stations by nbc, from bay area sacramento down to san diego will be showing this

debate. no excuse for not seeing it because you can see it just about anywhere in the state. put the two things together, powerful reasons to make this the first statewide debate of all of these people right at the time people start voting. >> wow, you'll see everyone in the state watching, all eyes here in san jose as they listen to every word they say. so beyond tonight, what's happening? is this going to be a very heated race? what do we expect? >> it's starting now. up until now it is sort of like nice stuff. now they realize they have five weeks to get it together. there's no room here. they've got to get their engines going and run fast and knock the other guys out. watch for a lot of chemistry tonight, not all going to be pleasant. >> we'll see what cream rises to the top here. >> or bubbles. >> exactly, right. either way. thanks so much for joining us. always good to have larry gerston. most teenagers can't vote but won't stop local teens from watching the debate. silicon valley community

that the dog was not hurt and also reportedly told police foster hit her hard but not that hard. innis preently reversed her story saying foster never hurt her and her wounds from a previous fight with a woman. he is suspended until his case is resolved. this morning the investigation continues after a tragic crash in san lorenzo, an ambulance as you see here ended up on its side after colliding with an audi. 74-year-old woman being transported died. two para medics and firefighter are also hurt. the accident happened at the intersection of lewelling. it is 6:06. new this morning a story that impacts all of us, a brand-new story finds a major spike in the number of pedestrians hit and killed by cars. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in concord.

it's important for people to take steps. the weather is out and people are out. we have to try to play it safe. >> reporter: correct, laura. this new research found that most pedestrian deaths in the united states involve suvs or speeding cars, happens usually when it's dark out, away from intersections and on busy roads that feed into the interstate like street boulevard here in concord. your safest bet is to cross when the light is stopped for traffic and always use a crosswalk to get to the other side of the road. the institute says that this research they came up with is a wake-up call for pedestrians. their research found that pedestrian fatalities in the united states are climbing to a 28-year high. if you look at the numbers, almost 6,000 people were hit and killed by cars in 2016. that's a 46% increase from 2009

when pedestrian deaths were at their lowest nationwide. the institute at cities and counties include lighting for pedestrians and more crossing islands and more crosswalks in between the intersection. for us pedestrians, there's something we can do as well. >> not wearing dark clothing at night, possibly including some sort of retroreflectivity as part of the clothing. all of these things are important and can make a difference. >> reporter: the institute acknowledged that drivers distracted by cell phones certainly played a role in the pedestrian deaths but it is not enough data yet to figure out how much impact those devices had. reporting live here in concord, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> play it safe. good advice. thanks, bob. >> anyone with an appointment at uc medical facility should make sure they are still ago. the second day of a three-day strike, 12,000 appointments

good morning, leslie. >> hi, good morning. wall street could be in wait and see mode today as markets around the world await president trump's decision on the iran nuclear deal later. stocks closed well off the highs yesterday after the president tweeted he would make an announcement this afternoon. oil prices are pulling back from 3.5 year highs and traders say in the u.s. withdraws that could hurt iran's oil exports further. tightening global supplies the dow rose 93 points and nasdaq closing up 55 to 7 ,265. sources say that comcast, parent of nbc universal is planning to make a $60 billion cash offer for most of fox's assets, that would top disney's $52 billion takeover bid. the move is contingent on whether the u.s. government approves at&t's purchase of time warner. that deal is being challenged in court by the justice department over antitrust concerns.

>> sorry, give us a moment. >> do it three. >> billion dollars. >> we're heading to work this morning, got to make that money. it's going to be a day with clouds in parts of the bay area and then some sunshine. it's going to be beautiful. we have a very shallow low layer of fog and then also we can see it draped over the golden gate bridge and slow as you head out for the most part. it does look really good. an aux lot of bikers across the golden gate bridge too. taking a closer look at this picture. 7-day forecast, you can look at your microclimate and already made plans for mother's day for the next several days. it will be warming up but we start out this morning in the low to mid-50s as you step out the door, you're out the door temperature in oakland now 54 degrees. and then as we go through that morning commute, by 8:00 we're at 58 degrees and all clear skies and sunshine and making it into the upper 70s and low 80s today. it's going to warm up fast. and especially for spots like

antioch and concord, we're heading back in the 80s, but notice the difference in the temperatures between there and san francisco. it will be 62. thanks to clouds and fog we're seeing this morning that will help hold the temperatures down. if you're going out to the hiking trails, maybe around los gatos today it will have a cool start with 53 degrees. at 10:00, we're already at 65 degrees and warming up for the afternoon into the mid 70s. a few changes here as i widen out the view and show the satellite imagery. we have clouds approaching and also some breezy winds that will begin to kick up later this evening. slight cooling tomorrow and then a big warm-up for the end of the week. look at friday, 88 degrees inland and it's going to gradually cool off as we go into next week and san francisco low 60s today and 70s for friday. now the nimitz is in recovery mode. >> part of the nimitz, the part that had wood debris blocking lanes. look, most of your map is

looking great. not to worry for most folks unless you have to dry between hayward and oakland and that is a good amount of folks. northbound 880 all lanes just reopened a few seconds ago. i did not remove sign. all lanes have reopened and we're already starting to see a little recovery here. then in the last few minutes, another crash southbound 880 at a street will cause more problems towards hayward. there's a combination coming off 238. west 580 may see a change in traffic. let's take you quickly to the waze system. 880 gets really jammed up and it take 50 minutes towards the bay bridge. i'll save you a half hour if you use 580 but there will be a change and see people allowing big rigs to travel there. there may be a change at the castro valley. you see contra costa county, bay bridge pretty standard slow over there and across the golden gate bridge, low clouds but it is not impeding the view for drivers. that's good out of the north bay. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

brand-new video of the leaders meeting today. the chinese president is expressing his support for kim's new strategy to shift focus to economic development to stop nuclear and missile tests. the summit happened as president trump prepares to meet with north korea's leader in the coming weeks. in washington, president trump is expected to announce his long await d decision on the iran nuclear deal. mr. trump says it's the worse deal he's ever seen and is expected to withdraw the u.s. from that agreement. senators or both side of the aisle are questioning this move. >> i hope he doesn't because i think it would be adverse to our national security interest. >> exiting would give them an excuse not to pli. >> the second senator there is outgoing jeff flake. leaders overseas like france and great britain and germany as urging president trump to stay committed to the deal. it is 6:34. the santa clara county judge

failing a recall election will break his silence this morning. critics say aaron persky was too lenient when he sentenced brock turner for sexual assault. roz plater is live with what we could hear from judge persky today. good morning, roz. >> reporter: good morning. you know, judge persky had launched an appeal to try to shut down this recall but he lost that bid and so this morning he is supposed to tell his side of the story. he wants to get his message out to voters in time before the june 5th primary and even as absentee sbroeting in under way. judge aaron persky has been a san that clara judge since 2003 but came under fire two years after after he sentenced swimmer brock turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a young woman on campus. that short sentence sparked outrage and activists launched a recall campaign. it took the nearly two years to collect enough signatures and overcome the legal hurdles to

get the recall on the june ballot. persky supporters argue it would set a bad precedent. if voters approve the recall, judge persky would be the first california judge recalled from office in 86 years. the judge is set to hold a news conference at 10:30 this morning and promising to answer questions from reporter reporte. this has been watched closely around the country, especially now in light of the me too movement. live in palo alto, roz plater for "today in the bay." >> very interesting to see what he has to say. thanks, roz. >> developing right now, the investigation continues into crash last night that injured two people in eastern contra costa county. this happened at brentwood boulevard and sellers avenue. authorities say those two cars collided at that intersection. this is near the area where four migrant workers died in a head on crash 14 years ago. you may remember that. that crash happened on nearby highway 4. >> developing this morning, at

6:36, investigators will be back in the north bay today looking into two suspicion deaths. two people found dead in a home yesterday. pete surattoss is live at the scene to explain how the victims were found. pete? >> reporter: good morning, they were found in the home after the woman -- her sister called police having concerns she hadn't heard from her in about a month. i want to show you, this is sonoma county sheriffs and they have the cruiser still in front of the home despite the call taking place yesterday. in fact we'll show you the scene yesterday when they were on the ground here at the home. now according to sonoma county sheriff's department, they were called to the home around 2:30 p.m. yesterday after the sister of that woman who lived in that home had not heard from her in a month. she told authorities she drove by the home and saw mail piling up as well as tall grass around the home. and during a check by deputies they found a man and woman dead

inside that home along with a dead dog and one surviving dog. authorities are trying to piece together what led to the deaths inside that home. >> we kind of went into it thinking a murder suicide we don't know. we'll slow down and really process the scene closely to make sure. >> reporter: now sonoma county sheriff's departments believe the couple died several days ago. contact the sheriff's department. we're live in petaluma, pete suratos "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, pete. you'll notice more police officers on the streets of san francisco today. sfpd is holding its safety enforcement operation focusing on bicycle and pedestrian safety. officers will be in areas that have seen a concerning amount of accidents. they plan on doing more of these patrols in the future as well.

saying foster never hit her and her wounds were from a previous fight with another woman. foster is suspended from team activity until his case is resolved. a tragic crash in san leandro, a 49-year-old woman is dead after an ambulance ended up on its side after colliding with an audi. it happened yesterday. we showed it to you on our midday newscast. the woman was being transported in that ambulance two paramedics and firefighter also hurt. the ambulance had its lights on and sirens on at the time of the crash. a live look in concord, news to think about the next time you're walking along a busy treat. a new institute tore highway safety study says that more cars are striking more pedestrians more frequently. this has happened often and the accidents are deadly. researchers say the numbers last year reached their highest point since 2009. most of those accidents happened along busy roadways, away from
