"early today" starts right now. >> good to be with you this morning. i'm frances rivera. >> and i'm phillip mena. president trump is now hinting about the potential release of three americans, have been accused of hostile acts against north korea. >> secretary of state mike pompeo is in north korea today for a second visit in just six weeks. he is expected to return with the detain easees. along with details of the summit with president trump. janice mackie frayer is live in beijing. good morning, janice. >> reporter: good morning, frances. there is a lot of speculation over whether the three detainees will be leaving pyongyang with the secretary of state. there have been enthusiastic reports in south korean media that were later walked back by the presidential advisor's office of the south korean president. what we know at this point is that mike pompeo is in pyongyang

to finalize the details of this summit between kim jong-un and president trump that is expected to happen at the end of this month, more likely sometime in june. there has also been the suggestion in north korean media recently that north korea's regime is not pleased with president trump and the way that he's framing this summit as north korea bowing to his campaign of sanctions. they say that it's kim jong-un that has decided for himself to come to the table. we have to understand as well that the secretary of state is arriving in pyongyang amid full fallout of the iran deal which is the exact sort of deal that the u.s. is expecting of north korea. frances? >> all right, janice, a lot to come out of that meeting. thank you. >> it is with reaction this morning to president trump's announcement that the united states is withdrawing from the landmark iran nuclear deal, fulfilling a campaign promise.

democrats wried democrats widely condemned the decision, nancy pelosi calling it senseless, disturbing and dangerous ahead of talks with north korea. but many republicans say the withdrawal will instead pave the way to a better lasting agreement. still, questions remain whether iran will restart its nuclear activity now that the u.s. has bowed out. here is nbc's hallie jackson. >> reporter: one of the most significant but not surprising foreign policy moves from president trump. >> the united states will withdraw from the iran nuclear deal. >> reporter: punishing new sanctions now back in place as the president gives some companies up to six months to wind down involvement with iran. >> we cannot prevent an iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement. >> reporter: the 2015 deal forced iran to get rid of 95% of its nuclear fuel and allow outside inspections in exchange for relief from tough

white house. >> later this morning cia director nominee gina haspel will find herself finally seated before congress. she faces senate intelligence committee members both in public and behind closed doors in her long awaited confirmation hearing. after days of courting hesitant senators, and with one key senator already voicing his no vote against haspel, the question is can she sway enough members to get a full senate vote? let's bring in nbc's tracee pots on capitol hill. hi, tracie. >> reporter: hi, frances. we are already hearing from the woman herself and by the way if confirmed she would be the first woman ever to lead this agency. we are also hearing from some of those members of the senate intelligence committee who have reservations about gina haspel. overnight her prepared remarks were released, what she will tell congress before the kw question and answer period begins today talking about how she'll lead the cia and about the interrogations that happened after 9/11. she said i have views and i want

to be clear. she goes on to say that having served in that tumultuous time, she can offer her personal commitment clearly and without reservation that under her leadership they will not restart the detention interrogation programs that have some members like one democrat already saying no, they will not vote for her. another like ron wyden saying the public doesn't really know who she is. but then there are republicans like john cornyn who insist there's already been a character assassination before she even starts answering those questions today. frances? >> all right. tracie, thank you. >> the ntsb will open an investigation into a tesla accident that left two people dead in florida. two 18-year-old men were killed when a tesla model s burst into flames following a crash in fort lauderdale. a source tells nbc news that a probe will focus on whether the car was an auto pilot mode when it crashed. tesla did not return calls for comment from nbc news. investigators will also look into whether the vehicle's lithium ion batteries were the

cause of the fire. founder elon musk has long defended batteries used in teslas as safe. >> new york governor andrew cuomo named a federal prosecutor into eric schneiderman. the one-time champion of the me too era announced his resignation after abuse against four women. nbc's ann thompson has the latest developments. >> reporter: new york's tabloids blaired the shocking accusations. the state's top law enforcement officer, attorney general eric schneiderman, accused of spitting at, choking, hitting or demeaning four women he dated. claims new york's governor promised would be investigated by an independent district attorney. >> no one is above the law. no one should be afraid to come forward. >> reporter: the women, two on the record who were in relationships with him for more than a year, two unidentified, telling their stories to the new yorker. michelle manning barish says one

general and has not yet come forward, please do come forward to the n.y.p.d. >> reporter: a public advocate accused of being a private abuser, alleged actions that are secret no more. ann thompson, nbc news, new york. >> we turn now to yet another flight scare. a delta flight from detroit was taxiing to the gate shortly after landing in denver when passengers reported smoke in the cabin. >> let us out. >> let us out. >> ladies and gentlemen, please lower yourselves, bend over, get as low as you can. >> some passengers telling nbc news they satin si inside as fu came through the vents. slamming the airline for offering no direction. peak passengers took matters into their own hands, opening the doors and sliding to the concourse. some suffered minor injuries during the evacuation. one was transported to the hospital.

their conditions unknown at this time. in a statement delta apologized for the incident writing the safety of delta's customers and crew is our top priority. it is unclear what caused the smoke. >> now to a developing story, the personal attorney for president trump, michael cohen, received hundreds of thousands of dollars from a company linked to a russian oligarch. that is according to michael avenatti, the lawyer for porn actress stormy daniels. avenatti alleges the company cohen used to pay that $130,000 in hush monday toy daniels also received massive sums from an investment firm with ties to a russian oligarch who was close to vladimir putin. avenatti published the document online and laid out the allegations like this quote. mr. victor and his cousin routed eight payments to mr. cohen through a company named columbus nova llc beginning in january of 2017 and continuing at least august 2017. according to the documents, those payments added up to approximately $500,000. and it appears these funds may

have replenished the account following the payment to stormy daniels. the documents also reveal payments from private corporations like at&t, knnovars and korea aerospace as well. documents support his account of transactions and former fbi official who worked under robert mueller put the bombshell news into context and how this may impact the investigation into michael cohen. here's what he had to say. >> we're supposed to believe that the president knew nothing about this. tonight it's quite possible that mueller is looking at cohen as an unregistered foreign agent, that he's looking at crimes like money laundering and bank fraud. >> all right. now let's head over to nbc meteorologist bill karins with a look at our forecast. good morning, bill. >> good morning. checking some storms this morning. overnight they moved to northern missouri, now from minnesota to wisconsin. storms will redevelop later this afternoon over areas of illinois and they'll spread into indiana and southern michigan. about 9 million people at risk.

the 2018 midterms officially got underway with key primary races across four states. among the most watched was west virginia's gop senate primary. the state's attorney general patrick morrissy won the nomination defeating two other candidates, most notably convicted former coal boss blankenship. president trump took to twitter to discourage voters from supporting blankenship who ran a controversial campaign who included attacks against senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and his family. following the concession, mcconnell tweeted this image depicting mitch mcconnell as pablo escobar with the tech, thanks for playing. the taunting tweet referenced the campaign ad that dubbed mcconnell a cocaine mitch.
