today but we'll get sunshine later this afternoon. let's look outside in oakland. as we get ready for the a's, that game will be at 12:35 today, first pitch at the coliseum and it will be at 63 degrees. lower 60s and a lot of sunshine, make sure you have the sunscreen if you're going to be out there. today we're going to see those highs in the inland areas coming down to 75 in concord. 72 in san jose and 60 in san francisco. we'll talk about what's ahead as our temperatures heat up this week and mike has been tracking the morning commute. so far so good? >> so far so good but we did hear about a crash at the bay bridge. i swung our camera in emeryville to a different view to see cars approaching the toll plaza. all of the lanes are filled, slow off the berkeley curve, what was reported as a crash, i don't see lanes blocked and don't seeny unusual patterns here. the approach out of the maze, hiding towards where that report came in, it's moving fine and off 880 off the east shore freeway, a good drive. behind me we have a disabled

vehicle reported for highway 4 into concord out of bay point. we get more details and let you know if it does affect the traffic flow but so far it's lighter there and concord and walnut creek. the south bay all close to your typical patterns right there. there's an issue, south 680, a crash did move to the shoulder, it's clear. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:02. breaking news this morning, the three american detainees held in in north korea are heading home. president trump tweeted in the last 30 minutes saying, i'm pleased to inform you that secretary of state mike pompeo is in the air and on his way back from north korea with the three wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. they seem to be in good health and also in good meeting with kim jong-un, date and place set. these are pictures of the three u.s. nationals who were released. they are accused of hostile acts against north korea. one was held before president trump was elected, the other two were arrested after the election as nuclear tensionsed.

the president tweeted they'll land at andrews air force base late tonight and he'll be there to meet them. >> we're just learning about shots fired at the caltrans worker on highway 24 near the tunnel. police tell us a driver pulled over to the center median west of the tunnels and caltrans tow truck driver tried to help but there was an argument. the driver pulled out a hand gun and pointed it at the caltrans worker and fired several rounds into the air. a friend of the driver arrived and both fled the scene. officers were able to track the driver to his home and arrested him. the caltrans worker was not work. >> also new this morning, usually go to the hospital after an emergency, but overnight, the south bay's largest hospital had to deal with its own emergency. a hazmat scare. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the medical center. what did they do to try to get this under control?

>> reporter: well, fortunately, laura, san jose fire department says all it took was soap and water to decontaminate the people exposed to the chemical. it started 11:45 last night a medical helicopter was bringing in a patient and this was a man who had been exposed chemical a workplace. he had a respiratory issue, sounds like he was coughing and ended up exposing a number of first responders to the same chemical. the hospital did call the san jose fire department to identify the substance and assist in the decontamination, ten medical staff and flight medics were exposed. the fire department was able to identify the chemical though they have not told us what it was. and we do know that the fire department and hospital were able to clean it up as i mentioned with just soap and water. the cleanup included the gournny that the patient was wheeled in on and interior of the hospital. the people who were exposed are all okay. no other patients were exposed.

as far as the condition of the initial patient who was brought in, his condition is unknown. now bmc did have to modify their operations for a short time last night but everything is back up to normal running operations here. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> frightening sight there. thanks, so much, bob. this is a really sad story to tell you about this morning. live now to danville where a memorial is growing. students there are returning to school at san ramon valley high school. a freshman was found unresponsive in the school's pool and pulled out by a staff member and rushed to the hospital, sadly he did not survive. memorial for him at that pool growing with the students gri bringing flowers well into the night. we're not releasing the name out of respect for the family. some of the students are having a hard time coping with what happened. >> i just knew it was him at that time and it just kind of in shock and it's weird because

some guy i know almost all your life won't be there the next day. hard to process. >> sometimes life can be hard and these boys, known each other since kindergarten and we really want them to know we're here for them. >> just hearing one of the mothers of the students there. grief counselors will be at the school today to help the students. meantime, police are investigating to find out an exact cause of death. >> a live look at the california theater in san jose this morning. a lot calmer than it was last night when the major candidates for governor took the stage. it was the first and last debate before the election of these six candidates and there were plenty of fireworks. >> this morning we've got you covered with the highlights and we're fact checking everything those candidates said. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez sifted through this overnight. what should voters take away from this heading into the primary. >> i will say the moderator chuck todd said it was a pretty civil engagement and definitely

touched a lot of different topics. they talked about issues affecting the bay area but also the entire state. as you might expect, housing was a very hot topic. how much we need to address the affordability crisis and the role that the california environmental quality act is playing in development. take a listen. >> the politicians here have driven up the cost with impact fees and regulations and litigation, the delay -- >> i would bring back redevelopment agencies and take money on a yearly basis from the state funds to use it for tax credits. >> i intend to lead that effort with an aggressive effort to change to connect local government and get them to do their job and better behavior and to be hun pif where we must. >> you don't have to get rid of environmental quality kirnz tco to do this. you have to streamline yes, but we're not giving up a clean environment, not on my watch. >> i was able to get a vigorous environmental review shortened for a football stadium.

workers joined the picketing. one professor says this recent wave of strikes nationwide including the headline making teacher protest could really be the start of something we'll see more often. >> unionization rates are pretty low right now and it could be that they've reached the bottom and it's kind of waking people up to the fact that workers do need to organize. >> as for this specific strike, at issue, service contracts, the union wants among other things a 6% raise. the university of california says that it can't justify the increase and counters with a 3% raise. right now at 6:09, you wake up and head out on this wednesday morning to cloudy skies and as we take a live look outside in dublin, let's head up to livermore to get the kids ready for school. it's going to be in the upper 50s and low 60s through about 8:00. as you walk to school, nice mild start, we'll still see clouds in the mix through 10:00 but as they head out for recess,

mid-60s, eventually hitting low 70s. checking out the campbell temperature trend, upper 50s as we start out, more people out and about and reaching upper 60s there for early afternoon as well. cooler day ahead but then we're getting ready for a warm-up. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, how is it look forge drivers and commute? >> we're taking a look out there. we'll show you how things are shaping up overall, really good, a little slowing developed for the south bay. we may have a crash 101. we'll get more details from chp and let you know if lanes are blocked. southbound 680 slows through pleasanton. the crash over here, it sounds like everything should be mostly off to the shoulder. might have one lane affected and that's why we see a little more slowing, south 880, there was an earlier crash and everything is on the shoulder. it sounds like everything is moving smoothly. you see the sensors slowing there as well as union city. that is typical as you pass by the san mateo bridge.

it is 6:14, cloudy start and we're seeing that all around the bay area. don't expect it to look like that all day long. here's a look at the live camera in fremont. a little breeze as you step out the door. we'll have temperatures in the low 60s and then it warm up in the low 70s today. great day for just wearing some light long sleeves. we'll have warmer weather and breaking ought the shorts by the end of the weekend. i'll have a look at that forecast in less than five minutes. >> east shore freeway, 22 minutes from highway 4 to the vul backup at the bay bridge when you come off the maze. that's where things slow down.

north bay, no major problems, mild slowing for highway 37 out of vallejo and in towards the island. >> and have you happy wednesday to you. oil prices are near three-year highs after president trump pulled the u.s. out of iran deal. remember, all of the other countries are still in so that may prevent enormous spikes in energy prices. boeing lost its ability to sell airplanes to iran with that deal. tesla back in the news after another deadly crash. this time two people were killed. both of them teenagers, this happened yesterday in ft. lauderdale. there was a fire after the crash as well. similar to what we saw after the deadly crash here on 101 in california. now, obviously cars crash. if you build cars people are going to crash them. and witnesses said speed may have been a factor in the florida crash. but the tesla safety situation has been under a microscope because tesla has had a rough

relationship with safety investigators, the ntsb tells bloomberg elon musk hung up on them on a phone call after the 101 crash. google starts the second day in the io conference. there are no blockbuster announcements but lots of upgrades and improvements. making a concentrated effort on artificial intelligence or a.i. speaking of, leaders in ai will meet with president trump for a summit on artificial intelligence today. facebook and oracle and intel are all going. very vocal trump supporters, video of a past tech summit with the trump white house. they had a number of these. the one i was most interested is shortly after the shooting in florida, they had a video gamesogame summit. >> i remember that. >> president trump wanted to know more about video games and invited executives, we've never heard anything since, no white paper ozs or or follow-up.

san francisco, 56 degrees, it's 60 now in san jose and if you're planning to go to the hiking trails in the peninsula today, we keep the clouds through about late morning. cool temperatures and then we'll see a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. we'll stay in the mid to upper 50s there and it's going to be windy. we'll also feel the breezes for the inland areas south county up to 75 in gilroy today. east bay 71 in livermore and walnut creek, 73 degrees and hayward at 67. once again upper 50s at half moon bay and redwood city, 70 degrees and 62 today on the embarcadero. north bay gusty winds at times and temperatures in the low 70s. we have a weak disturbance passing by. won't bring us any rain. as we head into the day tomorrow, it's going to be nice, if you're already planning to bike to work, we will have those free breakfast energizer stations set up and we'll have more on that but you can make plans, it will be a cool start and plans for the weekend. santa cruz is going to be cool. if you're taking mom there for

patio cover. mike paid $1,000 down and waited five months. mike tells us no one from the contractor reached out during that time period. by march, mike's patience had run out and he requested a refund. mike says the company ignore the him so he turned to us. >> contractor did not return our messages but about a week after we got involved, mike says he got a full refund. so what can you do when a contractor doesn't keep up their end of the bargain. always do your homework. research contractors online. and ask for personal references before hiring. be like mike, get everything in writing as well. mike's contract included detailed descriptions much pricing and work to be done and estimated start and finish dates. mike tells us he also did file a complaint with the contractor state lie sencensing board. you can do that too if you're

tells us in a statement, we hope this report and others like it will hip inform decision makers as they create or reform public school policies across the state. >> this should come as a relief if you ride b.a.r.t. it's rolling out more of its new fleet of trains. pete suratos joins us at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station. what will we see trains rolling out fresh and clean too? >> yeah, very soon, in fact we just confirmed that in our newsroom confirmed with b.a.r.t., they are going to roll out the new cars, 10 of them starting next week. that's good news for folks riding b.a.r.t. around the bay area. if you remember, it wasn't too long ago back in january they rolled out ten cars but there were some issues with doors. so they got that all fixed and now with the new sets of cars they've gone through a systemwide testing by public utilities commission. they've got the green light. they'll be on track next week. now for the new cars currently b.a.r.t. has ten of them running

from richmond to fremont. as far as what makes these different from new ones, they have three doors and wider aisles and auto mason. i did get a chance to speak with passengers here at pleasant hill b.a.r.t. this morning and shared thoughts about the new trains. >> and anything that improves b.a.r.t. is great because it's getting worse as far as like everything so it would be -- it would be nice. as long as prices don't go up. >> i like them. they look like they'll be more comfortable. >> we're looking forward to the new cars just because hopefully things will run more efficiently, more smoother and faster. >> the plan by b.a.r.t. is to have 80 of the new cars by the end of this year and have 176 by 2019. we're live in pleasant hill, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks, peete.

>> towards the south bay traffic shows a build north 101, still got the crowd going on. you hear them building northbound through san jose. the rest of the bay shows a pretty smooth drive but the big alert southbound 880 at 23rd as you come down in towards oakland off the bay area -- maze in the bay bridge, we have a crash blocking your lee left lanes. that's the initial report from chp. they immediately issued a sigalert, that means it expects a major problem. east 580 is an alternate. look at this beautiful view. it's slower and we have more traffic heading underneath those clouds to the sunny side over on the other side of the high rise which is like wednesday, over the high rise and little more pleasant. >> it's the weekend. it's coming up. >> a warm-up. >> it's going to warm up for part of the weekend and be windy on saturday. it's going to be really nice for

mother's day. let's start out with the saturday forecast. it will once again be gusty and warm, land areas up to 86 degrees. and 76 for the coast. notice on sunday, if you're planning to take mom to the beach, it's only going to be in the mid-60s the bay at 71 degrees, very comfortable and a beautiful 78 degrees for the inland valleys, we also have the taiwanese american cultural festival happening in san francisco. it's going to be great weather for that, a little warm for the afternoon as we reach into the 0's with sunshine and it starts out at 63 degrees. on sunday, you'll be able to check out the allah meet da spring festival all day and it's going to be cool during the morning at 58 degrees and then quickly warming up. make sure you have a jacket and then you'll be able to take it off and put on some sunscreen as that sun warms things up. then for russian river valley for the weekend, upper 70s for friday and saturday and check out sunday, 64 degrees with partly cloudy skies.

all three men were able to board this plane by themselves under their own power. they will be of course medically checked out. this plane is going to refuel then will head on to washington, d.c. in the meantime, some of the other big news as you wake up, the president tweeted the date and location of the summit with kim jong-un has been set. we don't know the expects. of course you know president trump pulled the united states out of the iran deal, that prohibited from building an atomic bomb the iranians were complying. the u.s. will re-establish sanctions against iran but remember, the iran deal involved many countries and these other countries are still in the deal, they are not going to sanction. in fact, iran's leader has said iran will stay in the deal. so the iran deal or more properly the joint comprehensive plan of action still exists. we're just not in it.

and a half but that was in south carolina where a homeowner heard the little kitten crying for help and reached out to rescue her. they ended up calling a los angeles based rescue group because they couldn't get to this kitten. hope for paws spent an hour using a looped rope to rescue the kitten. rescuers say it couldn't have happened soon enough. i think if it tough us another hour, we already had him out, he already he was failing and i was like i can't believe we took him all the way -- made it so far and he's going to crash now. >> the crew came from los angeles just to save the kitten and he's out, doing well, named jessie, going to find him a home i don't know if anybody would go that far to help me. >> we would. >> sky ranger.

live pictures from valley medica the time 6:55, here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> live pictures from valley medical center where ten first responders were exposed to a dangerous chemical overnight. it's all clear now but let me walk you through what happened, a medical helicopter landed before midnight. there was a patient inside exposed to some sort of chemical. medical workers in the helicopter were also exposed and somehow several other first responders were exposed as well.

firefighters haven't said what the chemical was but they were able to wash it off with soap and water. we don't know the patient's condition this morning. also breaking news, we just learned about shots fired at a caltrans worker that happened at 2:00 this morning near the tunnel. police tell us a driver pulled over to the center median west of the tunnel, a caltrans tow truck driver tried to help but there was some sort of argue mtd. the driver pulled out a hand gun and pointed at the at the caltrans worker and fired several rounds in the air. the friend of the driver arrived and both fled the scene. officers were able to track down the driver to his home and arrested him. the caltrans worker was not hurt. >> grief counselors will be at an east bay high school this morning after a freshman is found unxponsive in the school's pool. these are live pictures from san ramon valley high school in danville. staff members pulled the student out of the pool yesterday and rushed him to the hospital he did not survive. we're not releasing the name out
