u.s. right now, with three americans who have been held in north korea for years. nbc's chief political correspondent bill neely has more. >> the three men are in the air as we speak, the end for one of them at least. of a three-year saga of arrests, charges, prison and hard labor. they're being flown home with secretary of state mike pompeo on his second mission to pyongyang to prepare for the president's meeting with kim jong un. pompeo told the north koreans today, you've been a great partner. >> three american citizens held as prisoners by north korea are free and on their way home. the news broken by president trump in two tweets. the first announcing, i'm pleased to inform you that secretary of state mike pompeo is in the air and on his way back from north korea with the three wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting.

they seem to be in good health. also good meeting with kim jong un. date and place set. referring to the summit. and then a second tweet that said -- secretary pompeo and his guests will be landing at andrews air force base at 2:00 a.m. i will be there to greet them. very exciting. the first reaction came within minutes from the family of one of the three men who said -- we are very grateful for the release of our husband and father, tony kim, and the two other american detainees, we want to thank all of those who have worked toward his return home. we also want to thank the president for engaging directly with north korea. mostly we thank god for tony's safe return. >> the men are on a plane with secretary of state pompeo, who held talks in this hotel with one of kim jong un's top officials. the three men, kim don chul. kim hak song and tony kim were released from prison last month and were being held at a hotel.

they had been sentenced to years of hard labor for allegedly spying and other offenses. u.s. officials wary after the death last year of american student otto warmbier within days of his release from a north korean jail. his mission this time, unannounced until he was already in asia. >> secretary pompeo is going to north korea, he will be there shortly in a matter of an hour. he's got meetings set up. we have our meetings schedule swreext our meetings set. >> venue, date and length of the president's summit with kim will be finalized. he warned again. maybe it will work out, maybe it won't. pompeo on his first trip as america's top diplomat, said the u.s. won't repeat the mistakes of the past with north korea. well normally, president trump does very little business at 2:00 a.m. but he clearly wants to be seen personally to welcome the men home at andrews air base.

and this is a confidence-building measure by the north koreans. it's hard to see how that summit could go ahead with the three u.s. men as bargaining chips. south korea says the release will help the upcoming summit. and we're wait noug tore any news from the president of when and where the summit will take place, the first ever between the leaders of the u.s. and north korea. breaking overnight, a show of defiance in iran. lawmakers chanting "death to america" and setting fire to a u.s. flag after president trump's decision to withdraw from the iran nuclear deal. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has the latest on this. hey, andrea, good morning. >> good morning, hoda. president trump has followed through on that pledge to undo president obama's signature foreign policy legacy. in an unprecedented rejection of a landmark arms control agreement that his own experts say iran was obeying. overnight iran's supreme leader responding saying president trump quote cannot do a damn thing.

overnight iranian lawmakers burning a paper american flag in parliament. and chanting "death to america." outraged over president trump's decision to pull out of the iran nuclear deal. national security adviser john bolton saying the deal has been flawed from the beginning. >> what president trump did by pulling out of the deal is get back to what the real objectives should be -- stopping this dangerous regime from threatening us and our friends around the world with nuclear weapons. >> iran's president rouhani issuing this warning. if iranian benefits in the deal aren't provided, iran is ready to resume industrial nuclear activity. the leaders of the uk, france and germany issuing a rare joint statement, vowing their countries will stick with the deal. and expressing regret and concern about america's move. as expected, the president was bolstered by iran's regional enemies, israel, saudi arabia and the united arab emirates, all praising his decision to

quit the deal and impose tough new sanctions on tehran. >> we will be instituting the highest level of economic sanction any nation that helps iran in its quest for nuclear weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the united states. >> but most military and diplomatic experts worry the u.s. is isolating itself by rebuffing europe. and defying a u.n. security council resolution which codified the iran deal. the republican chairman of the senate foreign relations committee, bob corker, arguing the president's sanctions could sabotage the entire agreement. giving iran a path to go nuclear. >> if they put them back in place, my sense is the whole arrangement falls apart, right? i mean you know, our european companies going to choose dealing with iran over us? i don't think so. >> despite the president's characterization of the deal as a fiction -- >> at the heart of the iran deal was a giant fiction that a

kristen welker at the white house, good morning. >> hi, savannah. good morning to you. make no mistake about it, this latest development is a complicated one. but to try to put it simply, stormy daniels' lawyer is saying a company with ties to russia may have reimbursed the hush money payment made to the porn star on behalf of donald trump. this morning, potentially explosive revelations from porn star stormy daniels' lawyer. michael avenatti saying that president trump's personal attorney, michael cohen, received half a million dollars in the months after the 2016 election from a company he claims has ties to a russian oligarch close to vladimir putin. >> people lie, documents don't. period. >> nbc news has reviewed financial documents that appear to support avenatti's account of the transactions. that u.s. company, columbus nova, says the report is patently untrue, saying in a

statement in part, neither vekselberg other than crumb bus nova's oerners were involved in the decision to hire cohen or provide funding for his engagement. "the new york times" reports agents for special counsel robert mueller confronted the oligarch vekselberg as he stepped off a private plane earlier this year, searching his devices and asking him questions. >> all the money comes into this account, this essential consultants llc. we have reason to believe it did not all go to michael cohen individually. michael cohen needs to disclose where the balance of that money went. >> avenatti claims money was deposited into the same account cohen used to wire a hush money payment of $130,000 to daniels, the adult film star. avenatti speculating this morning -- did any of that money reimburse co-en for payments to daniels who claims she had a 2006 sexual encounter with mr. trump which he vehemently denies and what about contact that russian oligarchs had with mr.

trumps inner circle? the report also says that cohen also received hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies like novartis and at&t, which confirms it paid co-en's company essential cutting. saying in a statement, essential consulting was one of several firms we engaged in early 2017 to provide insights into understanding the new administration, they did no legal or lobbying work for us. and the contract ended in december 2017. now that pharmaceutical company, novartis, tells us in a statement that it was contacted last november by lawyers from the special counsel's office. the company said it cooperated fully with all requests for information and now considers the matter closed. meantime, that russian oligarch at the center of this has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing, but was sanctioned this past april according to the treasury department. we reached out to michael cohen and attorneys representing the president, but didn't hear back. savannah and hoda?

>> kristen welker at the white house. for more let's bring in nbc news legal analyst ari melber. russian money went to the exact same fund that paid off stormy daniels? >> that's right. this is a shell company, michael cohen is the only person known to be involved. set up in october 2016 to pay off stormy daniels, and now there's a line from michael cohen back to a company linked to a putin-affiliated billionaire, who as kristen just noted, was sanctioned by the trump administration. >> for election meddling. >> so you have this money that's going from an american company, that has ties perhaps to this russian billionaire. what are those ties? because this american company is saying we don't have anything to do with the russians. >> the ties are a lot of the funding goes all the way back to this billionaire, and he is in putin's good graces. if this were the last scene a movie, and the collusion evidence was money that came directly from a putin crony and

went directly to the president's fixer's account -- this would be too obvious. it's incredible. that this is where it lands. and michael cohen has been accused by the feds in recent filings of not really practicing law. and that raises another question -- what were these companies paying him for? >> because we now know that he did receive money from multiple companies through this, this shell company. so we will see. it's always a question of follow the money, isn't it? ari, thank you. meantime the president's pick to lead the c.i.a. faces what is expected to be a grilling on capitol hill. gina haspel could become the first woman ever 0 to lead that agency if she makes it through the much-anticipated confirmation hearing. nbc's halle jackson is here with the latest. >> the confirmation hearing for gina haspel has already begun. even white house officials acknowledge there's a lot riding on this. haspel introducing herself, sharing her story, not just with the lawmaker who is are in the room right now, but with the rest of the country.
