>> the progress crews make as they try to clean up today in the bay continues right now. we are talking about good weather today. it's not like it was yesterday temperatures are a bit cooler as well. a very chilly start. we have had a quiet commute so far. >> we have that. no major crashes on southbound

280. it should be cleared in the next couple of minutes as you approach the 680 interchange. we are starting to see a little slow down build up. by the time you pass through it will heat up and then a smooth easy drive in towards an jose. we have the first burst of traffic kicking in over the last ten minutes. it will kick in closer to 6:30. southbound shows a drive. i will check to make sure there's nothing approaching the area. this morning-- the three detainees who were held in north korea are back in the u-s. this is video of them arriving at joint base nd the three detainees, this is video of them arriving in maryland overnight.

>> this is live here in the studio. what does the president say after detainees arrived. >> they did say after the release he is more optimistic about that. let's get to that video overnight. this was 2:30 in the morning. it is on the right hand side and greeted also known as tony on the plane. they said they were ecstatic to be home. president trump spoke for himself saying the release of the three is one step closer to the goal of denuclearizing the entire peninsula. appear to be in good health, all three are at walter reed medical center for medical treatment and will be reunited with family.

in speaking this morning, trump also paid respect to the family of otto warmbier - a 22- year old american student convicted of hostile acts and sentened to a year old american student convicted of hostile acts and sentened to a north korean labor camp. you may recall, he died within days of his release. human right you might remember him sentenced to a labor camp there. he died within days as he returned home to ohio. >> thank you very much for following that for us. it is 6:03. now to a show of love and support. hundreds of parents, students and teachers gathered on the field. they were holding candles. he was found unresponsive in the restroom.

let's take a look. we are starting at the south bay. it is going to be in the low to mid-60s. we'll be at 56 degrees and then quickly making it into the mid-70s today with a beautiful sunshine and also comfortable air. we get a look at all of our micro climates. gilroy 78 degrees. for the east bay up to 830 in danville. oakland will top out at 74. it is 77 today. it will be gusty at times especially this evening. starts out with light winds. as we go into the evening the winds will rush in. we'll peak at about 25 to 30 miles per hour along the coast and in san francisco. the winds get stronger for tomorrow evening.

we are looking at highs that will be topping out in the low to mid-80s this weekend. we are showing a light but typical pattern here. 880 does show slowing typically. not extensive. 238 shows a great drive. it is off to the shoulder without any real additional back-ups. we'll track it as things start to build.

isn't from yuma. ticks and fleas are dangerous for our pets. a new study finds a lot of pet owners don't realize the true dangers. 32% say they don't give their pets flea and tick treatments at all. it comes after new reports from the cdc found tick and flea bites tripled from 2004 to 2016. they spread serious illness including lime disease which can be deadly for animals. coming up here, tobacco battle. the tip they are taking to keep candy flavored tobacco away from your kids. how it will make the whole process a bit easier. you're watching today in the bay. 6:27.

actually using hammers to smash the products that are used. they are doing it because they feel that's one of the markets that are targeting by big tobacco companies. exactly what it is, it was an ordnance passed in july by the board of supervise source in san francisco. it was set to begin this year to give retailers time to adjust. spor supporters say it hooks new smokers. they gathered enough together a possible appeal to this in june. they say a ban would harm corner

today in the bay is live in the newsroom with the new voting machines. it should be very interesting here, chris. >> yeah. and this week election workers are testing 300 new machines that they say will need a more timely result with a lot less manual sorting. they look like big black garbage cans. i got to test those out last week. it is without election workers having to handle all of those by hand. consider the time saving of that of the 1.5 million ballot cards processed in the last election. 40,000 were processed by hand.

>> this system makes that problem easier as well. it scanned the ballots so that an election worker can review voter intent in a matter of seconds instead of minutes it takes to physically handle a ballot. by the way, election workers in all of our bay area counties did mail out the voter guides last week. they should be hitting the mailbox about now. i live in santa clara county. i just got mine a few days ago. i have been reading it like a true election nerd. >> it's a good american citizen. >> i love it. >> there you go. thanks.
