>> good morning. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. we begin this morning with developing news out of jerusalem where the u.s. embassy is set to formally open in just hours. the american delegation was welcomed to israel overnight, greeted by prime minister benjamin netanyahu as fest tichlts are underway to honor the new embassy. ivanka trump, jared kushner and treasury secretary steven mnuchin and others all on hand for the celebrations as netanyahu lavished praise on president trump's decision to relocate the embassy. >> president trump is making history. we are deeply grateful and our people will be eternally grateful for his bold decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital and to move the embassy there tomorrow. 4:02 am
recent history there with clashes already breaking out between arabs and jews. for more on this let's go to nbc's matt bradley who is in jerusalem for us this morning. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, phillip. this is a very dangerous situation, and not just in jerusalem. right here in the gaza strip there's 2 million people who have been living under an israeli and later an egyptian blockade for really more than the past decade. and what's so dangerous right now is that this explosive decision by president trump is really motivating so many people, especially the legions of young people who live in this coastal enclave to try to break out. they are unable to leave because of this blockade. education is terrible. communication has been restricted. movement has been restricted. and all of the job opportunities have seemed to vanish. and that's why so many people here are planning this protest both today and tomorrow. now, as i explained to you earlier, phillip, what they are planning on doing is really audacious and it looks suicidal.
4:03 am
hundreds of thousands -- that's what the israelis and palestinians are expecting, mostly young men and women and children -- are planning on walking towards the border with israel. they are going to be met with live ammunition. and that's what's been happening the past nearly seven weeks here in the gaza strip. the israelis said they will not tolerate anyone trying to cross out of this coastal enclave into greater israel. so we can expect in the next few hours to see some very grisly scenes here. >> matt, thank you. >> french president emmanuel macron said the country pays the price of blood, but is sure it would yield not an inch to the enemies of freedom. the attacker killed one person and wounded four others before he was shot dead by police saturday night. it happened in a popular tourist district famed for its opera house and lined with shops. according to paris prosecutors they reported the suspect calling out god is great before
4:04 am
the attack. in a statement through the mock news agency isis described the suspect as one of its soldiers, but did not provide evidence for this claim. >> the agency purports this image captured from video to be the attacker pledging his allegiance to the leader of the islamic state. it remains unclear whether the suspect was inspired by or even a follower of the terror group. the stabbing is being investigated as a terror attack. so, here's what we know so far. judicial source has confirmed to nbc news he was a french citizen, born in the russian republic of chief meteorologist -- chechnya, and was on the watch list for signs of islamic radicalization. police detained his parents and friends for questioning. motives unclear at this time. >> a series of shocking attacks involving children, overnight officers and civilians are wounded after a suicide bombing attack at police headquarters in the city of surabaya. that's where explosives were set off by a family of suicide
4:05 am
bombers including a child as young as 8 years old. this just hours after suicide bombing attacks at three different churches in the same city also set off by a family including a child just 9 years old killing 13 people and wounding dozens more. isis has claimed responsibility for that attack, but authorities have not confirmed isis's claim. the state department released these statements voicing solidarity and condemning both attacks in paris and indonesia. >> senator john mccain's daughter meghan says she is still waiting for the public apology she was promised after white house special assistant kelly sadler reportedly said, it doesn't matter, he's dying anyway. when discussing mccain's no vote against cia director nominee gina haspel. meghan telling nbc news through a statement, quote, i asked her, kelly sadler, to publicly apologize and she said she would. i have not spoken to her since and i assume they will never come. still an apology hasn't come even as more prominent republicans come out rebuking the white house over this whole controversy. for more aniston this let's go
4:06 am
to trace is pots on capitol hill. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: phillip, good morning. the alaska senator dan sullivan coming out against the white house not really speaking out on sadler's comment at all. in a series of tweets, he talked about this and then urged the white house to apologize, urged sadler to apologize for this remark, saying that as the white house official who offered such an insult, she should show some respect and apologize. we have also heard from republican lindsey graham saying the white house needs to speak out. >> it is pretty disgusting thing to say. if it was a joke, it was a terrible joke. i just wish somebody from the white house would tell the country that was inappropriate. that's not who we are. if something happened like that in my office, somebody in my office said such a thing about somebody, i would apologize on behalf of the office. >> reporter: no public apology, but axios is reporting this morning that there are meetings
4:07 am
going on about this inside the white house, including meetings with white house spokeswoman sarah huckabee sanders. according to axios, visibly upset and furious, saying that this conversation is likely to leak and that it's just disgusting, according to a source in the room. we'll monitor today, phillip, to see if the white house says anything about sadler's comments. >> all right, tracie pots live for us in washington this morning. tracie, thank you. >> as china and the united states go head to head on trade policies, president trump has seemingly made an about face on his promise to save american jobs. he is instructing his commerce department to help chinese telecommunications company zte get, quote, back into business. this comes after u.s. government sanctions cut off access to the company's american suppliers for allegedly violating american trade controls against iran and north korea. zte which employs over 70,000 people said it is halted its main operations as a result.
