"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. violence boiled over in gaza near the border with israel. tens of thousands of palestinians staging a protest as the united states opened its new embassy in jerusalem. by day's end, at least 56 palestinians were killed and nearly 2,000 others were wounded by israeli forces. it is the deadliest day of violence at the border since 2014. >> but just miles away, jared kushner and ivanka trump were all smiles as they unveiled the new embassy. the juxtaposition captured by papers all across the globe. an analysis in the israeli paper calling the events a predictable disaster, and in one particularly scathing front page, the new york daily news calling the first daughter daddy's little fool. matt bradley is live in gaza. matt, good morning.

all right. we're having issues with matt right now. we will get to that story a little later in the broadcast. first we want to tell you about first lady melania trump who will be waking up in a hospital this morning, recovering at walter reed after undergoing a kidney procedure monday. the medical intervention coming as a surprise to the public and kept under wraps by the first lady's office, who called the operation successful, done with no complications. and while the white house is calling the condition benign, it marks the first time a first lady has undergone a significant medical procedure while in office in decades. nbc's tracie potts has more from washington. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: hi there, good morning. as far as we know, the first lady is recovering fine this morning. we have not gotten a lot of details from her office about this procedure. what we know is that she underwent this surgery for what they describe as a benign kidney condition. walter reed medical center performed an embolization

yesterday, and now we understand that she is going to be there until friday. that's likely as a precaution. that's a pretty long visit following surgery. in a statement, this is what we're hearing from the white house. that statement saying that the procedure was successful and that there were no complications. mrs. trump is at walter reed national military medical center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week that actually from the office of the first lady. we're seeing well wishes pour in from a number of people, obviously just not a political situation, including a tweet from the president saying that this was a successful procedure and that she's in good spirits, thanking all of the well-wishers. this move did come as a bit of a surprise to the public because we saw the first lady out and about quite a bit in the last week. frances? >> all right, tracie potts for us. tracie, thank you. hawaii's volcano disaster is intensifying. 19 fissures have split open since the kilauea volcano

erupted less than two weeks ago. the new eruptions are spewing more lava and toxic gas into residential neighborhoods. dozen of homes are destroyed and nearly 2,000 people remain under evacuation orders. but officials warn the worst is yet to come with the largest eruption now imminent. miguel almaguer has the latest from the big island. >> reporter: the latest eruption spews fountains of lava. gas so toxic, it's killing trees and grass. geologists say these fiery flows scorching the big island appear to be moving faster, burning hotter and are more erratic than ever before. san francisco destroying yet another structure, lava is moving closer to sang chong white's home just a half mile away. >> this is the first time in my life. scare me to death. >> reporter: now the billowing crater atop kilauea appears ready to blow. the lava lake inside drop,

hitting cooler groundwater below, a catastrophic steam explosion could launch ballistic boulders the size of cars into the air. from the air last week, we could see smokestacks and the steady progression of the lava field. it now covers land the size of 100 football fields. over the weekend, with new fissures threatening a geothermal power plant, thousands more could be evacuated, leaving homes but keeping hope. >> i'm really proud of our people and how much love we really do have here for each other. >> reporter: kilauea ace fury already felt and its most powerful blast may be yet to come. with dozens of structures destroyed, officials still don't have a tally on all of the damage. those numbers will likely climb in the coming days. phillip? >> those images so stunning. thank you. some unexpected drama as we inch closer to the royal wedding.

advanced medical care. that means that these thousands of patients, many of thome who have lost limbs are going to be a strain on this medical system for years to come. and there is no sign that this blockade is going to be lifted any time soon. in the near term, we're looking at possibly another full day of protests. that's because today is not nakta, or catastrophe day. that's when palestinians throughout the palestinian territories and really throughout the world remember the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state of israel. now that's a disaster for the palestinians just like yesterday's move by donald trump to take the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem. this could be another day of bloody protest, another day of lethal reaction from the israelis with sniper fire, and maybe even artillery. and we could see hospitals throughout the gaza strip clogged with even more patients. phillip? >> matt bradley live for us in the thick of things. matt, thank you. chris christie, the governor, the former governor of

new jersey is hailing it as great day for the rights of states after the supreme court struck down a federal law that prohibits sports gambling, making legalized betting the choice of the states, with a half dozen of them expected to quickly jump into the book-making game. justice correspondent pete williams has more. >> reporter: the only place to legally bet on the hockey play-offs or any other sporting event has been nevada. but now sports betting won't stay in vegas. the supreme court struck down a federal law that required most states to ban it. the 6-3 ruling declared the federal law unconstitutional, a violation of states' rights. new jersey brought the challenge. it wants to allow sports gambling at casinos and racetracks and to collect the taxes. monmouth park on the jersey shore has spent millions getting ready. >> everybody is betting anyway. so what we're trying to do is legalize this, protect consumers, and it's going to help us survive. >> reporter: the ruling opens the door to an explosion in

million drug-tested workers in america tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine, according to data released by quest diagnostics. and the number of drugged workers skyrocketed in very specific areas of the country with positive drug tests for meth increasing by 167% in the region that includes illinois, indiana, michigan, ohio, and wisconsin in the last four years. while the number of thopositive tested in alabama, kentucky mississippi and tennessee tested 160% higher increase. american airlines is now joining many carriers in changing its animal policies. the airline has announced updates to its emotional support animal policy and that update include banning animal type, including insects, hedgehogs, goats, ferret, certain birds and animals with horns. american will also enforce a preexisting 48-hour advance notice policy with guidelines for emergency last-minute travel. the new rules start july 1.
