studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hey, everybody. welcome to "today." thank you for joining us. >> nice to see you on a tuesday morning bright and early. we've got a lot to get to. let's start in the middle east. it's a volatile situation there. >> it is. there's been violence along the border this morning. the clashes among the deadliest in years. nbc chief correspondent richard engel is in the thick of it. hey, richard. >> reporter: good morning. this is one of the main conflict areas here in the gaza strip. what's been happening here is palestinian protesters have been crossing this open stretch of land. they're heading toward the israeli fence which is right behind me. and when they've reached that fence, they've been shot at. and today is another day of rage. there are many funerals in the gaza strip today, and they are angry. 60 palestinian protesters, hospital officials say, were killed. nearly all shot dead by israeli forces.

among the victims, seven under the age of 18. 2,700 others were injured when palestinians rushed toward the closed and heavily fortified border. the gaza strip run by hamas is sealed off. palestinians have been protesting here against their lack of freedom for weeks. but their fury boiled over on monday when the u.s. embassy was officially moved to jerusalem with president trump's blessing. the palestinians saying it negates their claim to the city. the goal of the protests? to show their outrage. some say they can't take it anymore. israel says it will and must defend its borders and blamed hamas for pushing people to violence. at the u.s. embassy opening ceremony, the american ambassador david friedman also blamed hamas. people here including yourself talked about peace, how this could open the door to peace. but today we saw a lot of violence, a lot of deaths in

gaza. how do you square the two? >> hamas has to end its seizure on gaza. it's a terrorist organization beseeching its own people. >> reporter: president trump says moving the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem was long overdue and will open the door to peace. so far, no sign of it. >> richard, i mean, it's hard to summarize the view of an entire people. but palestinians in gaza you've been speaking to, seeing what happened in jerusalem, are they just saying there's no hope for a peace process now? >> reporter: in a word, yes. they are not talking about a peace process at all. they say there can be no peace process with president trump, with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. then what happened moving the embassy to jerusalem, say say it takes away their hope of having jerusalem as their capital as well. there's not even talk of peace.

>> richard engel, thank you very much. also this morning, the well wishes are pouring in for first lady melania trump. she's recovering this morning after undergoing a surgical procedure on her kidney. let's get to white house correspondent kristen welker who's got the information. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning to you. the first lady is resting and doing well as she recovers here at walter reed medical center this morning. the president tweeting about her condition writing, our great first lady is doing really well. will be leaving hospital in two or three days. thank you for so much love and support. this morning recovery mode. first lady melania trump remains hospitalized after treatment for a benign kidney condition. the procedure was successful and there were no complications. president trump wasn't there at the time, but spoke to his wife beforehand and tweeted, successful procedure. she is in good spirits. thank you to all of the well

wishers, before flying to walter reed medical center to visit her. overnight, a show of support from both sides of the aisle. house speaker paul ryan tweeting, so pleased her procedure was successful. and the senate democratic leader chuck schumer, sincere wishes for her speedy recovery. the surgical procedure comes a week to the day after mrs. trump introduced her be best initiative in the rose garden. >> together we can be best. >> reporter: aimed at tackling bullies, drug use, and mental health issues in children. >> let's encourage children to think big, dream big, and be best. >> america is truly blessed to have a first lady so devoted. >> reporter: the former model taking on an increasingly visible role. seen at her husband's side last week welcoming home the three americans held captive in north korea. and spearheading the first state dinner of the trump white house last month.

mrs. trump now becoming the first first lady to undergo a serious medical procedure since 1987 in the white house. she will likely remain in the hospital for the week. eager to make a full recovery and get back to what the slovsh. working with children. the procedure was long planned. the first lady's office had had no comment on that or the specific timing of when the first lady learned she needed that procedure. >> kristen, thank you. >> let's bring in nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie azar to help us understand this. we wish the first lady well, but what is actually happening? what was wrong there? >> well, so the reason to do something that was done was to cut off the blood supply to one of the arteries in the kidney. the two most plausible explanations is there might have been a benign tumor in the

kidney when it gets to a certain size could bleed. or there might have been a blood vein abnormality. >> they did describe this as a benign condition. perhaps that is a clue. could this just come up on someone or something that might have been a problem for some time and finally you have to take this drastic measure of having a surgery? >> in the case of the benign tumor, they can be completely asymptomatic. or you can have some back pain or blood in the urine. they are often incidentally found as a workup for something else. they say oh by the way you have this. and sometimes people can have a blood pressure issue. >> was reading she could be in the hospital for possibly as long as a week. is that a normal way this is handled? >> that's been discussed a little bit, the length of her stay. typically this would be considered more of an outpatient procedure or even on overnight procedure. so we think this is probably just an abundance of caution, that they want to monitor her. certainly for any pain, any

bleeding at the site, or anything like that. no other information thus far. >> all right. dr. azar, thank you for that. >> thank you. now to that dangerous situation unfolding in hawaii. new volcanic eruptions have rattled the island once again. let's go to miguel almaguer working hard covering this story once again. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here at a police check point where mandatory evacuations are being enforced, we can hear loud explosions in the air. a clear sign the volcanic activity here is not over. in the distance we can also see an orange glow. lava this morning still on the move. this morning in the shadow of kilauea, geysers of lava spews high into the sky. so far no injuries and no fatalities. >> watch out, watch out. >> reporter: but officials on the big island fear that could soon change.

as the earth violently splits apart, authorities say the lava is now moving faster, burning hotter, and is more explosive than ever. astronauts can see it from space. 250 miles up. with plumes of poisonous gas pouring into the air, trees untouched by scorching hot lava are tying because of all of the fumes. they call this condition red. >> mother earth, like, boom boom bo boom creating all this flow. >> reporter: with kilauea's crater, a lake of lava threatening to blow, boulders could become missiles hurled through the air. a few miles from the crater at 3,500 feet, a bird's eye perspective of the damage. from here we can see how quickly the lava is still spreading. with dozens of homes destroyed, the president declaring a disaster. the true scope of what's been lost is still unclear. this is what they call the hot

zone. this morning in a constantly changing landscape, the very lava that created this land is now taking so much of it away. >> miguel, i know you've been talking to residents there. how are they handling this? this is a long time now they haven't been in their homes. >> reporter: yeah. it's been over a week. they are being fortunately for them allowed back into their homes for the most part every day but they're not allowed to sleep there overnight. the big concern is the sulfur dioxide in the air. you can certain lly smell it. it's why the evacuations are still in place. that air can kill. >> thank you very much. we have a lot more to get to this morning including a disturbing story from california. a young couple facing serious charges involving their ten children. a 29-year-old father is under arrest for alleged torture and child abuse. his wife accused of child endangerment.

gadi schwartz has the latest on these troubling allegations. >> reporter: good morning. there are two very different stories emerging in this case. the couple say they called police after one child running away. but the police say they saw some of the worst abuse they've ever seen. a warning, it's disturbing. shocking allegations of a house or horrors. police say ten children ranging in age from 4 months to 12 years old were found in this fairfield, california, home living in squalor. horrific stories of alleged child abuse. >> every day they lived in torture. every day all day long. >> reporter: wanda rogers is the children's maternal grandmother. six of the children removed from the home are now in her care. she agreed to talk to nbc news but did not want to appear on camera. these photos show examples of the mistreatment. >> they went through a lot of abuse. >> reporter: their father 29-year-old jonathan allen is charged with nine counts of torture and six counts of child

abuse. their mother, 30-year-old inna rogers charged with child endangerment says it's a big mistake. >> my children are my life. >> reporter: but authorities say what went on inside this house was sadistic. >> puncture wounds, burns, bruising. the injuries consistent with being shot with a pellet gun or bb gun. >> reporter: wanda rogers says police seized a knife from the couple's home and this book about satan. >> jonathan worships the devil. he had a devil room he called a meditation room. >> reporter: this is just the latest case involving child abuse. multiple children were found malnourished and shackled to their beds. david and louise turpin held their children captain for years. their attorney says the allegations are not true and she wants her children back. >> mommy loves you so much. and daddy loves you so much.

in case of an emergency, we're told to call 911 and get help immediately. >> as we saw recently in a tragic case in cincinnati, a teenager trapped inside of a mi minivan. the investigation of the situation just wrapped up and the boy's family is speaking out. blake mccoy is following it for us.

blake, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. cincinnati's mayor says they failed this young boy. the teen's father is saying this morning that the answers he's been getting so far from the city aren't good enough. and he's demanding an independent investigation. trapped in the back of a minivan, unable to breathe, kyle plush called 911 for help. cincinnati police never found him. >> the true tragedy here is, we had a young man call for help. and we weren't able to help him. >> reporter: a new report released by the city monday outlines the failures that day in april, when plush was reaching for tennis gear in the back of his honda odyssey minivan, the third seat becoming unsecured and pin him down. he used siri to voice-activate the cell phone in his pocket and call 911. >> help. help. help. i'm stuck in my van outside the seven hills parking lot. >> the seven hills what parking

lot? >> reporter: among the reports' fi findings, the dispatchers had trouble hearing kyle and giving the information to officers. officers never left their vehicle during a search of the parking lot to cover more ground. a second 911 call went unheard by a different dispatcher. the call center was having technical problems. >> i probably don't have much time left. tell my mom i love her if i die. this is not a joke. >> reporter: ultimately, the report concluded everyone involved followed proper procedures. kyle plush's father, who found his son's body, is demanding more answers. >> kyle knew he was in trouble and didn't call his mom and dad. he knew he needed to call the one entity that could respond quickly and ultimately address the immediate crisis the best. >> reporter: the city council is going to meet again to give that

time the murder was committed. he could not have committed the crime. >> the lawyer that represented michael at trial made a mistake by not aggressive live going after that albi alibi and said should have pointed the finger at thomas. >> thomas didn't commit the crime, either. the court acknowledged there were a lot of other people that could have made third party culpability defense. the press nor the police wanted to investigation a member not of my family. right now, tony bryan, a young man, has given a full confession to the crime, that he and his two friends actually committed the crime. and i've interviewed all three of them. we have it on tape. the police refused to investigate it. >> as i said, you wrote a whole

book about it. people are interested in the case, they can find your views. we want to talk about your book you just wrote, of course. it's almost the 50th anniversary of your father's death. what made you want to write this book? and what are you hoping to remind people about your father? >> originally, harper collins asked me to do the book ten years ago. and it was conceived as a book about the expeditions i had taken with my father. whitewater and mountain climbing and that kind of thing. it evolved into something much larger. i spent a lifetime of people asking me what was it like to grow up in that family at that time in history? and basically, i tried to tell that story and answer those questions. for all of us, it was a magical time. it was filled with laughter and humor and idealism. our household was the second white house at that time. it was a crazy, fun place with a
