5:00 am
first, good morning to you and thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to toss it over to mike inouye with a look what's going on with the crash. >> this is the nimitz. this is the fremont shot. we typically show the truck scales over here but on the truck scales northbound is jammed solid up to the flashing lights which are just shy of auto mall parkway. that's where the freeway is completely closed. we'll show you on the map where it is as well. the rest of the bay shows an easy light drive if you're trying to travel north through fre nont, you have to get over to 680 or fremont boulevard on this side of the freeway or cushing parkway on the other side with the gas station and hotel and mcdonald's to get you up past the scene, stevenson is okay from the western side and mallory avenue completely north of that crash and 680 itself is clear but we see a little slowing up through the construction zone as well for the southbound side. that's all going on in fremont. now that multiple -- as i understand it as a result of that crash, chp had hoped to
5:01 am
open thing by 45:00 but bob, you're gathering information and there might be some delay in that? >> reporter: good morning, mike. we just spoke with chp within the past few minutes, they are preparing to try to open the number one lane on northbound 880 at teef venson and hope to have all of the lanes open perhaps within the next hour, maybe within the next half hour as you can see, right now they are removing a cadillac escalade, all of the people killed and injured were riding in the vehicle. there were eight people in there when the accident happened at 9:30. they found three people ejected, an adult woman and two juveniles, one of the juveniles was in her late teens, sadly all three of those people died. the other five people in the car, an adult man and four more juveniles taken to the hospital, including an infant. one of the juveniles, not the infant, but one of the juveniles is in critical condition. we do know that some of the people, not all of them but some
5:02 am
of the people in the cadillac escalade are related. in other words, they are family members. at the time driver of a white toyota camera is under arrest. we have just found out it was a man who had been driving recklessly and speeding prior to this accident, according to a couple of reports, phone calls into chp and he is under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana. again, causing this collision involves five vehicles that cadillac escalade and three people dead from that vehicle. five more injured, one critically and as you can see behind me, they are starting to remove some of the vehicles. they are going to try to have northbound 880 reopened between auto mall and stevin'sestevenso definitely by 6:00. bob redell "today in the bay." >> so tragic.
5:03 am
>> it's 5 0i78:02. a cool start, could see drizzle today? >> we could see drizzle in parts of the bay area this morning as you get ready to head out, you're already seeing some clouds and we're going to see those clouds thisticking with u with our temperatures as you get out the door mostly in the low to mid 50s around the bay area. as we go through the morning commute, it's going to be in the mid 50s through about 8:00 and mostly cloudy early afternoon. temperatures in the mid 60s, we'll talk more about that and light iran corain coming up. 5:03. happening today in the north bay, the 19-year-old accused of killing a man at a sonoma state call is expected in court. now tyler britton of santa rosa will be arraigned this afternoon. police say he stabbed a 26-year-old man inside a campus apartment early sunday morning. witnesses say they heard a man and heard the fight and then saw

5:05 am
the feared leading cause of death in teenagers and teen hospitalizations for suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts doubled since 2008. suicidal thoughts and attempts do spike in the fall as you mentioned and the professional advice here is routine screening for depression in kids aged 12 and up and parents should watch for changes in appetite and sleep and interest in friends and other activities they liked before. the experts say please do not be afraid to talk with your kids about suicide. there is a fear that somehow you'll encourage a kid to do that and we know that's not the case. >> you may know from previous reporting, we have a higher than normal suicide rate. and it shows teens in palo alto and morgan hill and sunnyvale
5:06 am
committed suicide at the higher rate than the rest of the county and more at a higher rate than the rest of the state. that study showed that school stress was one factor but that also points to the fact there are teens dealing with recent crises or medical health issues. the investigative unit has done extensive reporting on this issue and you can find that nbcbayarea.com/weinvestigate. in milpitas, kris sanchez, quts in the bay. >> if you or anyone you know is in crisis, someone is available to talk and listen 24 hours a delay. anonymously even. suicide prevention hot lie, 1-800-273-8255. >> developing internationally, there are concerns whether president trump and kim jong-un will really meet for that historic summit. north korea's leader is
5:07 am
threatening to cancel. already canceled high level talks with the south set for today. overnight on state tv, the north blamed south korea pointing that routine military drills with the u.s. north korea says it's not interested in a summit if the u.s. is just going to pressure the country into giving up nuclear weapons. experts say that threat is a negotiating tactic. >> they will try to string them along right up to having the summit. they may in fact have the summit and then north korea will probably announce they have a new strategic rocket missile wing. >> north korea has not officially canceled the summit. as of now it is still set for next month in singapore. >> it is 5:07 and developing right now, palestinian families laying their dead to rest following this week's violent confrontations with israeli forces. hospitals in gaza are packed with injured protesters and in the meantime israel is taking a new approach with gaza to avoid
5:08 am
more deaths. drones are hovering above protesters and dropping small tear gas bombs. israeli troops shot and killed 60 palestinians on monday, including six children. palestinian supporters yesterday marched in san francisco downtown. tonight they are planning more action. this time gathering outside the jewish community center. the former israeli prime minister is scheduled to also appear there. continuing coverage for you. do you remember the story from last week where contractors laid the substandard steel for track on san francisco's subway project? the examiner reports city leaders are now looking into the same problem elsewhere. the subway project completion date getting pushed back because crews did not use that strength rail. mta now wants to look at whether other rails may also be substandard including the track for the renovation in san francisco twin peaks tunnel. >> happening today, some road

5:10 am
couple of sprinkles across parts of bay area but some of the bigger storms have been over the sierra the last couple of days and that will be the case today as well. as we go through this 7:00 to 8:00 hour, a couple of light showers possible especially along the coast and if you're heading over towards the sacramento valley, we could see some showers moving through by early afternoon as it clears as we go into the rest of the day. we'll still see some of the those clouds lingering as we go into tonight as well as tomorrow. i'll detail that. the cooler temperatures ahead and we'll take a look at our temperature trend for palo alto. mike is taking us back to the crash in fremont. >> we still have the closure and that's the reason for the big backup here, you see from our fremont camera northbound 880 is jammed up solid from just north of there all the way up to auto mall parkway where we have the full closure. i was watching the camera from time to time where bob is over at the scene at the stevenson overcrossing and did see what
5:11 am
looked like chp removing the last of the vehicles from the roadway. a lot of debris remains and they may have to keep the lanes for close to 5:30 and 6:00 hoping for traffic to reopen on that stretch. fremont boulevard, alternates to take you up to mallory. 680 moves smoothly because mission boulevard is open if you travel over in the nimitz. the rest of the bay is green. green for those sensors. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> coming up next on "today in the bay," anticipation is building it really is. >> you know, britain and america, i think it's fantastic. >> it is fantastic. can you smell the tea and crumb pets already in the air? people are getting excited about the royal wedding. how people in the uk are prepare forge the big day and the latest controversy involving meghan markel's family. >> a billion dollar question for whole foods in court. at 5:25, behind the scenes

5:14 am
it is 5:14. we're making it on halfway through the week and we're going to see the possibility of a couple of sprinkles. other than that a mix of sun and clouds as we go through the day.
5:15 am
starting out with low 50s and low 60s by early afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the forecast as we warm up. that's coming up in five minutes. >> we're looking over here, not much lighting here because they've just removed the lighting trucks, we're still looking at the closure for the nim ilgts freeway but look at the backup. lights getting to auto mall parkway. we're following the progress there. i'll give you the very latest and work around coming up. >> stocks broke an 8-day winning streak, part is renewed interest in bonds. do watch today as well, the news that the korea deal could fall apart. roku, that tv box had technical problems last night. that's kind of extra embarrassing for the south bay company because they opened the nasdaq this morning in about an hour and 45 minutes. amazon says it's figured out what kind of discounts it's going to give amazon prime customers ats whole foods.

5:17 am
foreman on that jury, a mild mannered san jose grandfather named bell hogan said in interviews after the trial he relied on some of his own knowledge as an engineer in reaching that verdict. you're not supposed to do that if you're on a jury. that said, i know mr. hogan clearly, interviewed him. he had the best of intentions. >> of course. >> but this thing has just gone on and on and the billion dollar verdict. so samsung and apple are still fighting. >> we've been talking about that for years. >> a long time. >> thank you. as part of affordable housing week, some santa collar ra supervisor candidates are talking about homelessness. if you want to listen, head over to hoover middle school at 6:30 tonight. walnut creek today in the east bay work begins on a new way to help the homeless. organizers say it is first of its kind program, st. paul's commons combines affordable

5:20 am
so this weather has been pretty much on repeat too. we've seen the clouds during the morning and some clearing for the afternoon. and it's still going to be fairly cool today. here's a live look outside at emeryville, we're seeing those clouds overhead and as we head out the door feeling cool temperatures. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen starting in the south bay as you get ready to head out the door. the out the door temperatures right now in the low to mid-50s, grab a jacket. we were just talking about this the amgen tour of california starting and ending in morgan hill. start time will be at 12:45 and it will be partly cloudy and only 61 degrees. with lower 60s for the next couple of hours. then as we go to concord, we'll start out this morning at 55 degrees and 62 degrees at 10:00 and your noontime temperature 65. it's going to be a little on the cool side as we check out the high temperatures for the afternoon in the south bay, loss
5:21 am
gatos expect a high of 68 degrees and 66 in livermore and oakland, 64 degrees, some upper 60s for palo alto and san francisco, only making it up to 60 in the mission district. and the north bay, up to 64 in sonoma. as we get a look at what's happening here. we've seen the daily storms firing up even some lightning happening right now around lake tahoe. so that will be something to watch today and then tomorrow. the contra costa county fair starts out in antioch and it will be dollar delay. 72 degrees and really nice weather and some sunshine in that forecast for tomorrow afternoon. and your weekend forecast is coming up in about 20 minutes if you can stick arp, let me know what your weekend plans are on facebook. i'll have a look at the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. mike, the focus still on fremont. >> thart that's right the reason is because of the deadly crash. you see the traffic jammed up here from dix son road up to
5:22 am
auto mall parkway where there are flashing lights. looks like the camera froze. we have a live shot right here as well. the southbound side. over here this is the northbound side. one that's completely dark. watch look at this. i think we might have some chp vehicles coming. they did clear the roadway but i thought there was a lot of debris. one vehicle here, you see the flashing lights into the scene, clearly -- look at that, chp making the turnaround. i'll let you know if they reopen the roadway while we're on the air but you see the jam there. mission will take you towards 680, the rest of the bay moves clearly but i want to show you waze, jogs you over and jumps back on at mallory to get you around the jam. we'll track that. it did look like they are getting ready to open lanes. back to you. >> we'll check back with you. thank you, mike. >> coming up here, have you been thinking of heading to the beach this weekend? the reason you might want to think again if you're going to

5:27 am
crazy because the chunks that you cut off are always hundreds of pounds minimal and this was a trophy that the winner had to be able to put above their head like in triumph. >> so nbc sports bay area and nbc sports california had a hand in commissioning this work along with both giants and a's. >> my grandfather helped build the bay bridge so i would love to have a little piece of that. >> really? >> not a trophy, but a little piece of the bridge. >> isn't that cool? 5:257, coming up next, breaking news we're following in the east bay, a massive backup in fremont right now hours after a deadly crash. mike is going to help get us up to speed. plus -- >> i am not an animal. i'm not a torturer and not a monster. >> a child abuse story getting more horrifying by the day. they say that they are loving parents but investigators are painting a much different story as the mother heads to court,

880 in fremont still shut down hours after a horrific deadly breaking news we continue to follow at this hour. 880 and fremont still shut down. this is hours after a horrific deadly crash there. a live look at the backup stretching for more than a mile. you can see right there. look at that. what you need to know before you're heading out the door this morning. thank you so much for joining us, i'm marcus washington.
5:31 am
>> i'm laura garcia. let's check in with mike, really a tragic accident overnight. it happened about 10:00 last night but can you imagine the residual still remarn? >> it's getting worse because the morning commute is kicking in from the south bay through fremont. i did want to mention speaking of the south bay right here we got word 280 and 887 there's a lot of water and some sort of flooding. we heard there may be as much as 18 inches of water in the lanes and traffic alert issues down here. over here to fremont. the deadly crash and closure continues for northbound 880 right here. this stretch. you're traveling north you showed that big backup for from dixon lany road. it's solid up to auto mall parkway. we still have the closure of the overnight deadly crash. your alternate, take mission towards 680. that's completely clear. you can take cushing and fremont boulevard north. if you join north of stevenson,
5:32 am
you're okay as well. those are the alternates but bob re-dell has been at the seen looks like they've made progress over there. >> reporter: good morning to you, mike, we spoke to you about a half hour ago, we thought maybe at least one lane of northbound 880 would be open but as you can see that has not happened as of yet. apparently chp is waiting for caltrans to show up with more cones. there's still debris on the road there and i don't know if you can see there's a record that has the vehicles involved in this horrific accident that happened last night. there's still debris out there. so it's a matter of getting that debris cleaned up. it could still be another half hour, maybe even longer before they get all of this reopened. chp tells us they will be giving us more info on the dui suspect, the driver who caused this accident. right now they'll tell us that he is male and checked out fine at the hospital and in custody and under arrest for dui, driving under the influence of marijuana. chp says they received a couple
5:33 am
of calls that he spoeeding and driving recklessly in the moments before the five-car crash around 9:30 last night. one of the vehicles involved was a white cadillac escalade with eight people inside. some of them members of the same family and that suv overturned and ejected a woman, young adult and juvenile. those are the three people who sadly died. the other five people a man and infant and three juveniles were all taken to the hospital. one of the juveniles is in critical condition. >> it's tough for everybody. the decision people make, the decision this person made to driving under the influence, changed these people's lives forever. driving under the influence of marijuana is just as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol. we come on crashes or come upon crashes like this and you never get used to it. it's sad and tragedy. our hearts go out to the family. >> the people in the other three
5:34 am
vehicles involved were not hurt. again you're look he at a live picture of that white cadillac escalade here on northbound 880. chp was hoping to have all lanes of northbound 880 between auto mall and stevenson open by now but as you can see there's clearly a delay. reporting live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so sad. tragic. thank you. right now we want to go to kari hall looking at what to expect as we head out the door this morning. you take take the coats or jackets this morning. >> it's a cool start, a lot of clouds and we'll get some clearing for the inland areas it's. we'll be up to 69 degrees, a little bit cooler tomorrow and then a gradual warm-up for the weekend. saturday is looking really nice at 76 degrees. for the coast and san francisco, 60 degrees today. and with those clouds we can also see some spotty light sprinkles in some areas. we dry out but temperatures really don't warm up as we go into the next several days and coming up in seven minutes, i'll
5:35 am
talk all about the weekend forecast as you start to make plans on this wednesday morning. >> all right, thanks, kari. >> this is a case that is still shocking people across the bay area and the country. investigators are saying that ten children living in horrific conditions were punched and strangled and even torture of water boarding and today their mother will be in the court. pete suratos is live at the courthouse in fairfield. pete, investigators now are saying that that mother knew about all of the things that were happening and did nothing. >> good morning to you marcus, these allegations we're seeing in the new court documents, as you mentioned, the mother, ina rogers is expected to be in court in fairfield in a few hours behind me. let's jump into the charges as you briefly mentioned there. she's facing nine counts of felony child abuse. these were filed just yesterday and in those court documents, they are making allegations that
5:36 am
the children were punched and strangled and shot at with weapons, also mentioning that rogers was aware of the abuse and even assisted in torturing those ten kids. now before i get to these next images, i want to warn our viewers they are disturbing. these were shared with us by the children's grandmother, wanda rogers currently taking care of several of those kids and the pictures you see there show the kids alleged injuries. she's been very vocal about the unhealthy conditions inside the fairfield house and also share a video from inside of it claiming to have found a satanic book and knife. she claims the father jonathan allen is a devil worshipper. he's been arrested and charged with several counts of felony torture and child abuse and during a jail house interview yesterday, allen denied allegations he tortured his kids age six months to 12 years old and also had this to say about his religion. >> i say like the closest thing to me is like indiana jones or

5:38 am
for game three this sunday. >> all right, guys, we're looking at this continuing issue right here. behind me, these are the crews, the tow truck and flat bed. there's the escalade, the white car. another passenger vehicle behind it and forklift that removed both of the vehicles from the roadway on the back of a flat bed. behind it you see still closed. let's get out to maps and we're talking about that portion north of mission. it's jammed up all the way to auto mall where folks are forced off the roadway anydy way. jump back on at stevenson or mallory. everything else aside from the bay bridge toll plaza moves very smoothly. the bay bridge toll plaza has metering lights on -- no, wait, we have that other issue. southbound 280 is jammed up approaching highway 87. it's closed and that connector from south 280 to north 87 is closed because of flooding. >> yeah, a pipe burst.
5:39 am
