and i )m marcus washington. we want to get strait >> good wednesday morning. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get straight to the traffic and that deadly crash in the east bay. mike inouye has been tracking this for us this morning. >> good morning. folks, we have fortunately for much of the bay a lighter volume as we hit the summertime shift. but a huge problem has still been the complete closure of northbound 880 and fremont which continues to cause more and more backup. we're seeing cars slowing before they get to mission. if you head towards 680 that will slow you down a bit before you make that shift. auto mall is where they have the closure. we're suggesting cushing parkway but fremont boulevard will also take you there. look at this live look from our fremont camera. it is jammed up solid from mission boulevard all the way past the truck scales and tesla up to the flashing lights. still working there. bob redell has been on the scene
6:01 am
all morning. there's a lot of debris to clear. looks like they've been picking up the pieces. >> reporter: within the past 30 minutes it looks like caltrans worker has gotten a lot of that debris off the northbound lanes of 880 here at stevenson, trying to get some of the lanes open by 5:30 but we're at 6:00, do not have the lanes open. i'm getting a sense just looking down the scene that hopefully they will have them reopened soon because of a horrible accident where three were killed and five people taken to the hospital last night after a suspected dui driver caused a five-car collision around 9:30 last night here in northbound 880 at stevenson. chp says prior to the accident the moments leading up they received calls about a man in a white toyota camera speeding, driving recklessly before the crash. turns out he is now in jail. after he checked out fine in the hospital, arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence

of marijuana. you can see the white cadillac escalade. all of the people who are hurt and killed were in the vehicle, some part of the same family. it overturned and three people were ejected. those are the three people who died. a woman, a young adult and a juvenile. the other five people who are in the vehicle taken to the hospital, a man, an infant and three more juveniles, one of those juveniles is in critical condition. the other people in the three other vehicles were not hurt. again, the suspected driver a male is in custody suspected of driving under the influence of marijuana. we're sti waiting for all lanes of northbound 880 to reopen here. hopefully that happens very soon. reporting live from fremont, bobredell, "today in the bay." >> switching gears bringing in kari. she's looking at the forecast for us. cooler temperatures continue. >> it looks really cloudy as you get ready to head out the door. we'll see clouds over the next several hours and there may be a couple of spotty sprinkles in

parts of the bay area so far it's all drive in san jose, kids up and out the door for school this morning, it's going to be cool, only mid-50s and it will be a chilly day with partly cloudy skies by the time they get out of school it will still be in the mid-60s today. we'll talk about what's ahead as we get a gradual warm-up in forecast coming up in five minutes. >> happening today in the north bay, the 19-year-old accused of killing the man at sonoma state is expected in court. tyler brat ton will be arraigned this afternoon. he stabbed a 26-year-old man inside a campus apartment early sunday morning. those witnesses say they heard that fight and then they saw bratton covered in blood. the witnesses also say he said he was defending him self. both of the men knew each other and this is the first homicide in sonoma state's 57-year

6:05 am
the subway project completion date now getting pushed back because crews did not use the strength rail. mta now is really wanting to look at whether other rails may also be substandard, including the track for the renovation in san francisco's twin peaks tunnel. and also happening today, road closures might impact your routine. this afternoon, the amgen tour of california bike race rides into the south bay. now as we've been showing you on this map, you can see it here, stage four of that race starts in downtown morgan hill. cyclists will bike just under 22 miles and if you aren't familiar with this, the tour started in southern california and this is video from stage one on sunday. eventually it ends in sacramento. the seven-stage race covers 600 miles. if you want to watch, live tv coverage starts at 1:30 p.m. on nbc sports network. >> new this morning, progress on affordable housing front. today is the grand opening offen

affordable housing complex for seniors in pleasanton. kris sanchez joins us with a inside look at the unit and deeper look at the dent this puts in the housing crisis. good morning, chris. >> reporter: hi there, laura. these are really beautiful little units, some look like little cottages and seniors can live independently at the much lower cost than it would cost if they were renting a tradition pafrmt. these are all spoken for. as soon as they were available, they were snapped up. here's a look inside one of those units here that rents to low income seniors from about $550 for a one bedroom to just $1300 for a two bedroom cottage. the project of the city of pleasanton and mid penn housing is now -- has been years in the making and some of this was existing housing and those residents got moved out for the construction then they got first priority. so when the other units opened up, mid-pen housing got more
6:07 am
than 900 applications before they just had to shut down the waiting list after dwo weeks. 900 applications in two weeks. one senior who is also a veteran says he could not afford to stay in his home without affordable housing like this. >> on a retired pension i could not afford to live in this beautiful town of pleasanton without the assistance of the rental plan. i feel very fortunate. >> reporter: this grand opening is part of the east bay housing organization's affordable housing week and while today's grand opening is cause for celebration, we know that the need far exceeds the availability. it will have 131 units today and that calls for celebration, adding 54 new units on the other side of the street behind my camera man here and those will be added by next year.
6:08 am
this is a combination of new construction and redevelopment of existing construction, a partnership between the city and housing advocates like mid penn housing. the celebration in pleasanton kicks offer around 11:00 and will go on for about an hour and 30 minutes. this is affordable housing week and a lot of communities are having serious conversations to decreeite more housing for people like seniors and veterans and regular folks trying to get by. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> and right now at 6:08, we walk out the door and we're seeing clearing skies, looking live right now in san francisco, and let's go to martinez for a temperature trend. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day and it will start out cool with low 60s at 10:00 and it stays cool through the afternoon as our highs only reach 67 degrees there. all of our high temperatures generally staying in the 60s, upper 60s for are the inland areas and low 60s for the coast. half moon bay at 67 degrees.
6:09 am
as we take a look at our temperature trend, we'll have that coming up in about four minutes. mike is giving me the thumb's down. >> still not clear for the crash over in fremont. i think we have -- we just got bob's live shot back again. you see the two flat beds loaded with three separate vehicles. there were four or five involved in the crash that had to be cleared over the course of this morning's show. this crash happened last night, still have the roadway closed and another vehicle traveling through the area and they've cleared a lot of debris. let's look at your map, auto mall parkway closed from stevenson boulevard and sensors are starting to light up. they may be getting ready to open lanes from mission past the scene. that's a big problem traveling north through fremont. cushing parkway, get you alongside either side of the freeway past that backup. your commute coming down in towards fremont from the east bay from 580 and mim slowing for hayward. no major problems towards the

6:14 am
we'll talk about that and also the giants forecast coming up in about five minutes. >> and you're looking at the cars on the side of the road, stevenson on ramp still closed but northbound 880 you see cars starting to move. they are opening lanes northbound at the parkway, even as we speak. we'll follow this progress but i'll show you that massive backup and give you a work around coming up. and happy wednesday to you. stocks broke an eight-day winning streak yesterday. part of that renewed interest in bonds was part of it. do watch today that north korea deal could fall apart. roku, that little tv box had technical problems last night and that's extra embarrassing for the south bay company because they open the nasdaq this morning in about 15 minutes. amazon says it's figured out what kind of discount it's going to give amazon prime customers at whole foods. 10% more off stuff that's already on sale and then rotating weekly specials. this week's special is halibut.
