your commute in a moment. right now we go to kari hall. kari, we can expect nice weather today? >> really nice today. a lot of sunshine. as you step out you can't really tell it's going to be a comfortable day. it starts out chilly. our temperatures at walnut creek at 5:00, 62 degrees making it into the low 70s for early afternoon. as we check out our high temperatures today, it's still going to be breezy and cool for the coast and inner bay and oakland up to 64 degrees. be at 74 in antioch, 70 in san jose. we'll talk about what's ahead over the next several days with a slight warm-up. mike investigates your commute at the bay bridge. >> that's what we do here. #, we investigate. over here metering lights are turned on. chp report didn't say that. judging by the pattern, must be something going on. very quickly making their way onto the span. the bay bridge metering lights triggers a back-up at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's taking almost 10 minutes

for this to form in the fasttrack. 880 overcrossing, slowest drive with biggest back-up. we do have a crash blocking west line 580, towards the maze itself. starting to see a back-up there. that is the focus of the morning commute. concord, orind, a, contra costa tunnel no problem, smooth drive for east shore freeway. down in the south bay no major problems, 880 slows a bit through hayward and south county a little slowing 101 through san martin. that's pretty good, laura. back to you. >> thank you very much. we begin with breaking news in the south bay this morning. police blocking roads to a san jose neighborhood this morning as investigators remain on the scene of a double homicide. "today in the bay" bob redell joins us live at the scene. near allen rock park. bob, i understand you got a big update in the last hour or so. >> correct. good morning to you, laura.

we're here on sierra road and skyview road where they still have roadblock established. crime accept 3800 block of sierra road. in the last few moments we've seen the van leave, coroner vans carrying the bodies of a man and woman have left the scene. according to the san jose police department they let us know in the last hour around 10:00 hass night they received a 911 call one person had been shot. officers arrived here. they not only found one person but two. they found man and a woman, both adults, each shot once and sadly both pronounced dead at the scene. the police department has not identified a suspect or suspects. they are still looking for who did this, shot these two people. they have not found a description as of yet. these would be the ninth and tenth homicides in the city of san jose for the year 880. reporting live in east san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> a tough morning there. thank you so much for that update, bob. >> 6:02, breaking news out of oakland right now. deadly crash shut down an intersection. two mangled cars you see there. it might change your commute. police say 98th and bancroft is closed for several hours while they investigate. no other details right now but we'll stay on it. >> happening today in san jose, 49ers linebacker reuben foster's domestic violence case goes before a judge. foster is accused of attacking his former girlfriend back in february. he pleaded not guilty last week. his girlfriend recanted her claims against foster. she may testify under oath at today's preliminary hearing. foster is charged with having an assault weapon. he is suspended from the team's activity as that case plays out. >> as we take a live look from washington, d.c., this morning, today is marking one year since the start of the russia investigation. just yesterday several big

developments in that probe into whether the trump cam paper illegally worked with the russians during 2016 election. last night the president's attorney rudy giuliani announced trump will not be indicted. here is what he said on fox news. >> about time to say enough. we've tortured this president enough. i don't think agree to the process question, which is the same reason they can't indict him, they can't issue a subpoena to him. >> giuliani said special council robert mueller confirmed that news to the president's lawyers. a positive development for the president if true. but just yesterday a senate intel committee reported russia did mettle in the 2016 campaign on trump's behalf. the big question mueller is trying to answer, was the help coincidental or coordinated. 6:04 and continuing coverage. you and your family can eat romaine let us again. cdc giving all clear following e. coli break that sickened 200

people. meanwhile a north bay family is now suing the pizza chain, suing one of the pizza chain. that family claims contaminated lettuce from papa murphy's and american canyon sickened three people in the family. the hunter family from vallejo filed that complaint in solano county. sacramento food supplier is also named there. the lawyer says the family's 3-year-old daughter is still receiving treatment from kidney problems. asking for damages and closer food inspection. >> without testing it, there's no way to know what they are selling is either safe or harmful. >> papa murphy's is not commenting on that lawsuit but it did say, "immediately upon hearing the announcement by the cdc on april 13th, and out of an

abundance of caution, we directed our system to remove product from our stores and inventory." at 6:05, a lot of questions surrounding a charter school in clayton and surprise exit of school leaders. according to "east bay times" the county is launching an audit. the audit follows this week's surprise departures of the top two administrators at the clayton valley high school. the two happen to be husband and wife. for more than a year people raised questions about the school's money trail and questionable hires. now the county's office of education is demanding the school maintain all documents for finances and hiring practices. the royal wedding coming up on saturday. certainly the excitement is building. new video this morning showing some of the preparations under way at windsor castle right now. today the staff, castle guard guard and hundreds of others behind the scenes of the royal wedding will stage a rehearsal at windsor castle. now "today in the bay" jay gray

liver in london. jay, we got a big announcement overnight about whether or not meghan markle's dad will attend the wedding. >> reporter: yeah, overnight there, early morning here. we learned from kensington palace behind me here as they released a statement from meghan markle. she's saying she sadly has to report her father will for the be part of this wedding. he was admitted for emergency heart surgery two days ago. doctors say he's not well enough to make the trip. meghan markle and prince harry are in the palace, so is her mom. she made the trip over and is staying in the palace. she may meet the queen as early as today, part of the formal preparations as part of this historic wedding. behind the walls of windsor castle, teams are frantically preparing for the day. >> they are getting set up. it's cool to see. >> polishing and dusting and we think practicing the organ.

san francisco. isn't it just a beautiful sunrise. seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as you get ready to head out the door. let's go through that morning commute in the south bay. hopefully not too long for you. partly cloudy skies, 53, warming up into the upper 60s as you head out for lunch. we're going to make it to 70 degrees today in the south bay. 70 also in livermore. 73 in concord. palo alto 69 degrees. oakland today 64. 61 in st. francis. also today the contra costa county fair kicks off in antioch and it's dollar day. get there early. it will be in the low 70s at 4:00, then it does cool down nicely as the sun sets. make sure you bring a jacket because it does cool off quickly. if you do have plans to go to sierra, this is a live look at squaw valley. we can see the clouds overhead and there will be a chance of thunderstorms not only today but the next several days with high temperatures in the low 60s.

register for next month )s well, you hear it all the time around elections, get out and vote. if you haven't registered, monday is your last day to register for next month's primary. one will allow voters to weigh in on the gas tax. the proposition clarifies where that money goes. the gas tax took affect last month raising prices $0.12 a gall gallon. you remember that one. it would be a lockbox requiring it to only be used for road improvement projects. opponents believe one way or another lawmakers not putting that money where they are supposed to. >> we have seen three decades of nothing but diversions of valuable transportation dollars. ping voters would be foolish to trust them this time. >> down the road there's another possible curve here. gas tax opponents say they have

up in the allen rock foothills. >> we all know the opioid crisis is a major problem across the nation and right here in the bay area. today leaders in one lay area city will make a new approach. they will take this approach as they try to solve the problem. >> san francisco mayor mark farrell lays out an ambitious plan to help the city's homeless struggling with opioid addiction. pete suratos joins us live to break it all down for us. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. as you mentioned san francisco mayor mark farrell is going to unveil this plan later this morning, especially the pl morning. essentially a plan to take it to the people battling opioid addiction, we're seeing across the country but in san francisco. the specific drug they want to prescribe to folks called buprenorphine. according to san francisco

chronicle, it works faster than methadone in that it stops craving immediately. the department of public health did a test on the drug at tent encampments in san francisco about two years ago and they said 60% of the 200 people who use the drug are still working to stay clean. now as far as the city's plan goes, a 10-person team hitting the streets to prescribe the drug to 200 people over a two-year period. the funds for the program will be included in the mayor's current budget proposal. the department estimates their about are about 11,000 heroin addicts, they pick up 12,500 needles in homeless encampments per month. they got a behind the scenes look at one in canada. you can read more about that on our website, nbcbayarea.com. live at the golden gate bridge, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you for the update, keeping us updated.

>> it is 6:33 right now. a follow-up now. today the man accused of driving high and killing three people is due in court. if tran was behind the wheel. there were eight people in the suv all headed home to manteca after a day at happy hollow zoo. nine-year-old brook and her sister christy died. 39-year-old noel johnson died in the crash. the baby critically hurt. many communities spent the past few weeks getting people ready to protect themselves. fire crews crews are reminding you to clear out brush and vegetation, making it harder for the fire to spread. last year we dealt with deadly north bay fires as you remember. we'll get a look at the weekly drought monitor this week. of course the drought is over

but somewhat permanent limits. watering your lawns during and after rainfall and hosing off sidewalks and driveways. many communities still have stricter drought rules in place. atherton puts people on water budget. morgan hill, pleasanton, cupertino and milpitas only allow you to use water and water lawns during specific times. those same cities plus santa clara, san jose and los altos require hoses to have those shut ofl valves when you wash your car. palo alto and mountain view insist you only serve water on request. at 6:35, new this morning, hope for home owners in the south bay who maybe want to add a granny unit on their property f kris sanchez live at city hall. definitely a lot of people talking as they try to expandton their little homes they have right now. >> reporter: yeah. you know, i'll tell you that

usually this is an annual event, well attended. this year a lot more buzz because there are proposed changes to that granny unit zoning. if you've ever wanted to think about -- rather, if you've ever thought about adding a granny unit to your property in san jose, you know the city has not made it easy with zoning requirements, size requirements and what not. that could be changing very soon. let me show you this morning homes, the planning commission is going to unanimously recommend changes to zoning and process to allow home owners to create more what they call accessory dwelling units, what you and i call granny units. the commission will tell the council that it will help people house extended family members and perhaps create more affordable housing here in the difficult area to find housing. take a look at the proposed changes on the screen. the city may expand zones where granny units are allowed. and allow more single family

lots to qualify and increase the maximum size of adu, which is a granny unit, and ease and clarify setback and parking requirements, which will likely comfort your neighbors if you're thinking about getting a granny unit. now, i confirmed this yesterday with the city couple, they won't hear this item until june 17th. however, i can tell you you don't have to wait to get answers if you are interested. the city will have a special presentation about granny units at 6:30 tonight at city hall rotunda. you can talk with trillion, plumbing experts about permits. they will answer questions for you. i've posted more information about this all morning long on my twitter feed and facebook page. i set up a poll asking if you think this is a good idea to have more granny units in san jose. i asked the same question on facebook, and i look forward to continuing the conversation

high for the coast only 62. we'll keep the cool weather for the coast and breezy conditions as well. 68 degrees for the bay and 72 inland on sunday. what are you going to do this weekend if you've already got your tickets for the quakes game you know it's going to be a lot of fun out there at avaya stadium. kick off 7:15, 67 degrees. nice and comfortable. you do want to bring your jacket as those temperatures cool off into the low 60s. then on sunday you can boogie on the avenue in campbell. it's going to be beautiful with some sunshine. maybe need some sunscreen with all of that sun. highs reaching up to 72. it's going to feel very comfortable. then on sunday we also have the bay to breakers in san francisco. this will be a race that starts out cool with cloudy skies. by the time you get to celebrating in early afternoon, we'll start to see that sun coming out. if you're going to yosemite this weekend, we will have an afternoon chance of showers and thunderstorms each day. not only today but tomorrow as

mid-70s for antioch. it will be a little warmer than it was yesterday. as you're getting dressed, take a look out the window. see that sunshine, do not forget sunglasses. also long sleeves will be comfortable as it will be breezy at times. if you're going out there to contra costa county fair that kicks off, get there early for dollar days. it's going to be 73 at 4:00. a nice little cooldown as we head closer to sunset. so bring some long sleeves as well. russian river valley for the weekend will be very nice with mostly sunny skies as you check out some of the videos in the low 70s. towards the inland areas up to 75 on saturday. sunday 70 degrees and still have low 70s spoke next week. not much of a big warm-up here. in fact, san francisco stays in the low 60s through early next week. mike, now you're tracking a crash in the north bay. >> i am, kari. look at slower drive we saw on the sensors. south bay we have a crash that

they claim they ate contaminated lettuce. the couple says their 3-year-old daughter still getting treatment for kidney problems. papa murphy isn't commenting on the lawsuit but did insist restaurants remove that lettuce after the cdc warning last month. cdc says romaine lettuce is finally safe to eat again. >> on hawaii's big island experts warn there could be a massive explosion. more than 100 smalle on the island just yesterday which could indicate an eruption is imminent. if kilauea does erupt it could send large boulders flying as far as half a mile away. of course there would be some heavy ash fall. hawaii's volcano national park remains closed. a live look at city hall. that's where leaders may change rules allowing home owners to add more living space. if you own a home in san jose, you may already know this.
