>> to stand out in the rain. >> to stand here in the rain and get soggy. >> we're so glad you made it. nice to meet you all. thank you for traveling all the way to get here. >> welcome. >> welcome indeed. you get the award. >> weather should improve. we'll find out from this one over here. >> speaking of crowds, by the way, they're building in windsor for saturday's royal wedding. hoda has been mingling with the folks there. she's moved back up to the set outside windsor castle. hey, hoda. >> hey, guys. yeah, we were just down on the streets. again, it takes a couple of minutes. just walked up some stairs and here we are, with this gorgeous backdrop of windsor castle right behind us. it is going to be the scene of the wedding on saturday. i think this may be the best vantage point imaginable. just ahead, you guys, we're going to take a look at prince harry's life in the public eye, leading up to the moment he becomes a married man 48 hours from now. we're going to talk with his former bodyguard, who has some insight into harry when he was younger, and the choices he made
8:32 am
in his life that led up to this choice of meghan markle. we'll have that and a lot more in a little bit. >> looking forward to it, hoda. also ahead, you'll remember this one, is there more to afternoon tea than chowing down on scones? is there a right answer, when someone asks, how do you do, like the queen? we'll tell you. it is interesting. >> do you have to have your pinky out? >> that is a question. we'll get into all of that. hoda and i got a lesson in royal etiquette. >> by the way, if you were with us yesterday, we had our royal party on the plaza. well, we've repurposed some of our incredible arrangements from farm girl flowers a the nbc experience store. along with all sorts of props. you can bring out your inner king or queen, prince or princess. the ultimate photo op here at 30 rock. if you're in the area, stop on by. >> beautiful. >> mr. roker, i would ask you for a check of the weather, but rain. >> that's right. pretty much. it is going to be like this going right into the weekend in the northeast and mid-atlantic states. weekend outlook, we have a

flooding risk in the mid-atlantic states. severe storms through the plains. hot and humid in texas. saturday, soggy. downright wet along the eastern seaboard. a chill in the air in the rockies. showers along the pacific northwest. sunday, sunday, showers in the east. high humidity through the gulf. scattered showers in the rockies and through the plains. for your wedding planner, their weather is looking a lot better than ours at windsor castle. tomorrow, we're looking at 8:00, noon, sunny and cool. by noon, it is 58. 4:00 p.m., it will be picture perfect for the wedding on saturday. 65 and sunny. it is going to be terrific. let's head back to hoda. i'm that's what's going on around the country. here's what's happening in your neck of the woods. >> good morning, i'm meteorologist kari hall. we are going to be a little bit warmer today for the interior valley. livermo
8:34 am
livermore, 70. 70 in san jose. concord, 73. we'll have some 60s in oakland and 61 degrees in san francisco. in santa rosa today, expect a high of 70. low 70s for the inland areas today. and also for tomorrow. up to 7 an 5 on friday, just a h cooler for next week. we've talked a lot about meghan markle this week. now, we want to focus more on the groom. everyone will be watching prince harry saturday, but it is nothing new for him. he's lived his entire life in the spotlight. he was the toddler who stole the nation's heart before he could walk. the prince of mischief with a twinkle in his eye. >> he was that character that would want fun and, clearly, he inherited his mother's genes. very much a social individual. he was always the guy that people wanted to be with. >> diana encouraged the young princes to relate to the real world and to real people.
8:35 am
>> within billikekensington pal behind me, the chef and butler was part of the family. >> there was the painful breakup of his parents. harry at school at the time. there were fun times on vacation with their mother, princess diana. and then, there was that terrible night when his mother tragically was killed in a car crash in paris. harry was just 12 years old. the two mile walk behind her coffin when the world suffered with him. >> this is what royals do. it is a public ceremony. i remember he arriving at the west door of westminster abbey, where i was standing, and he did look traumatized. >> for years, he locked away his pain, making mistakes in public. dresses up in a nazi uniform, punching photographers, traveling with his then-girlfriend, all the time, wrestling with his loss. >> ask him a question about his mother, and you could see his
8:36 am
face go red. she was angry. prince charles and the queen would have been very, very worried about prince harry. is he off the rails? is he going to bring shame on the family? >> he appeared to want out of the royal trappings. against the odds, he became the people's prince. >> it was a vulnerability about him, which i think has made most people really feel a deeper affection for him. >> it was the army that saved him from himself. serving two tours in afghanistan and coming back with a sense of purpose. he founded an organization for war veterans called the invictus games. >> now, he is the jewel in the crown of the royal family. >> locking arms with his brother, william, and kate, harry tackled mentalish sh issi took hiv tests in public, and started opening up about his own pain. >> the first 28 years of my life, never talked about it. >> meeting meghan, he said, was a revelation. >> when i walked into that room and saw her, there she was sitting there, i was, like, i

have to up my game. this beautiful woman just literally tripped and fell into my life. >> someone ready to share not just harry's path but his passion to make a difference. i'm joined now by ken wharfe, a bodyguard for princess diana, as well as princess william a -- p william and harry. the way i figure, a lot of people are who they are. you have their personality locked in. how would you describe harry's? >> when i see him today, you know, on the eve of his great, great wedding day, i think back to the first day when i met him, age 3. a guy that could barely speak at that point. >> right. >> it was the house in norfolk, north of london. i was introduced to his mother. his mother said, with william playing the piano, and harry there, diana said, i don't envy
8:38 am
your job. they can both be a nuisance. william turned around and said, no, we're not a nuisance. harry mumbled some words, fell off the table, followed by the vase. diana got up and chased them out of the room. you know, that piece of entertainment, if you like, that humor, i think, has followed harry through his life. most of it good. some of it bad. he's a character. >> his choice of megan meghan is, i guess, unconventional. it wasn't what the palace had ever seen before. did this surprise you, knowing how well you know harry? >> i think this is a classic harry. i mean, i don't think he went out of his way to shock people. he's found meghan, albeit through a go-between, if you like, but looking at his face, that moment, that time of engagement, it was clear he was fascinated and in love with this woman. it mattered not to him, she happened to be a divorcee, american or mixed heritage.
8:39 am
that's where we are in the 21st century. his mother would be delighted with this. >> it almost is like he's changing the monarchy, harry is, without trying. he's just being harry, and things are changing around him. do you see it like that? >> oh, i see it. i mean, he's, you know -- diana was the modernizer in the '80s and '90s. was effectively criticized by some members of the royal family for so doing. they were jealous of her popularity. what you have with harry now is a guy that is actually endorsing, continuing all the work his mother did. >> sure. >> the hiv and aids, the charities that needs royalty. what can royals do when they go to a charity affair? they're bringing money, which is what they want, but he and meghan now, who is campaigning in the same direction, they can be the biggest double act we've seen for a long time. >> those two are definitely changing things. ken, we appreciate your insight. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. up next, prim and proper. sort of. savannah and i get a much-needed

cheerio. >> cheerio. >> hello. >> this is lovely. >> live look there outside windsor castle. british life and the royal family, more specifically, are sources of endless fascination for people all over the world. >> okay. now, while we admit there are a lot of similarity between us americans and our british brethren, there are things that are, well, unique and british. >> that's right. before hoda said toodles and went to england, we decided to brush up on our etiquette. founded in 1769, you might say debrett's kicked off the original social media. it listed a family history for each noble titleholder. think facebook for the

aristocratic set. today, the name debrett's has become synonymous with british etiquette, for the recent publications, like etiquette. >> royalty. >> very funny. >> for an insight into the world, we met at new york's pierre hotel for afternoon tea with one of debrett's leading experts, catherine lewis. thank you for sitting down with us. >> thank you for having me. >> we keep thinking about megan hark -- meghan markle and what life must be like for her. >> she's an american girl like us. she has to learn the royal ways. >> she is. times are changing. meghan is a perfect example of that. she's the first ever global princess. >> debrett's, is that the royal bible? >> absolutely. >> the book of how to act? >> yes. i mean, etiquette is just kindness. that never goes out of fashion. there are certain protocols. >> we want to learn them all. we've been watching "the crown." we watch the jackie kennedy

character. >> your majesty. >> no curtsy. >> no curtsy. >> is it an international incident if you don't get the royal protocols right ? >> absolutely. a unicorn dies. princess loses their sparkle. the first thing, actually, the best manners is to -- if someone gets it wrong, let it go. if someone came up and said, how do you do? how would you reply? >> i would say, fine. how are you? >> very well. how are you? >> being british, that's actually wrong. >> oh. >> we don't like it direct. how do you do is a statement. if i said, how do you do? you say, how do you do back. >> how do you do? >> thank you. >> there's no, i'm good or, oh, my mom isn't well, none of that? >> you don't want to know how we do. >> first test up, you have a skro scone there.
8:45 am
how are you going to cut it? >> you're the queen. i'd do that and not switch my fingers. like that. >> that actually was a perfect use of knife and fork. except it is a trick question. it is a scone. scones, you only ever use your hands. >> oh. that's easy. >> you just -- >> break it with your hands. >> interesting. >> how about the drinking of the tea. it is a biggie. >> hold it at the top there, resting it on your bottom finger. >> am i supposed to have my finger out or something? >> no. >> that's not true? >> it's not true. >> if someone does that -- >> they've been watching -- >> they'll be shot. >> no finger through either. >> how are you holding it? >> british gravity. >> you're holding it like this? oh, no. >> i'll spill it. i really don't think i could do it like this. >> i think it is impossible. >> is that better? >> oh, definitely better. couple more times, and you'll be palace ready. queen has arrived.
8:46 am
>> okay. >> how do you do. >> how do you do. >> your majesty. >> your majesty. >> curtsy. one foot slightly behind the other. >> okay. >> have a go. >> i don't know how to do it. >> that's actually very good. >> was it? >> are you kidding? >> she'd move on. >> you really just wait for her. >> yeah. >> curtsy. >> she leaves. you go, bye! >> call me. >> oh, hoda. >> you guys are ready. >> what do you anthink, hoda? >> how you doing? that's what i'm thinking. >> i can't do that mug thing. can you do it? >> i couldn't get it straight. >> it is hard. >> i do not have the finger strength. >> i can hold it, but i can't drink it. >> yeah. >> oh, the brits. >> good thing you don't have an audience with the queen. >> exactly. up next, two more broadcast

with joe biden, bleich took on domestic violence. served president obama as special counsel and ambassador. maybe bleich can't pull off the rockstar look... but his progressive record is solid gold. of course, the eyes of the world are on prince harry and meghan markle this week, but two other big names are expected to make waves across the pond, as well. >> that's right. cord and tish. fictional tv presenters brought to life by will ferrell and molly shannon. they are covering the royal wedding, too, for hbo. before heading to england, cord and tish sat down with us. this is awkward because we, hoda and i, for the "today" show, are going to be broadcasting at the same time you guys are. >> i know. >> we're competitors. >> yes. >> we kind of are. >> what do you think about that? >> well -- >> put on the boxing gloves. >> exactly.

>> hopefully you guys don't get sabotages. >> you said you're a history buff. >> sure. >> do you already know all the dukes and duchesss and all of the titles, earls. i have to study. >> can i be honest, savannah? >> yes. >> i don't. >> do you plan to study? >> i'm studying. >> it is a lot to learn. >> it is a lot. >> i am looking to see some of the sights but stay away from any sort of horse drawn carriages. i have a horrible fear of horses. >> oh. you know harry and meghan are going to do a horse drawn carriage ride through windsor. that's part of it. >> yes, that's part of the thing. that's where you have to put your journalist cap on and just, you know, ignore that part. that's when i'll be squeezing tish's hand. >> he really gets scared. >> i do. >> even seeing it on the monitor. >> they're dangerous animals.
