>> now to news out of washington. today president trump says he will officially demand the justice department look into whether the fbi spied on his 2016 campaign. the deputy attorney general says if true he needs to know and take appropriate action so the department is expanding its probe. here's how we got here. last week the president accused the fbi of em bedding a spy on his campaign staff. the fbi reportedly did send an informant not a spy to talk with trump campaign aides in 2016. that happened after finding evidence of suspicious contacts with russian officials. here's the president's lawyer. >> to investigate it. he's not telling him what to conclude so it's probably appropriate. >> democrats are responding. here's a tweet from san francisco's nancy pel los say saying he insulted and tried to discredit the men and women at the fbi and doj to detract from

today after the trump administration said it was putting tariffs on chinese goods on hold. dow futures call for a 200 point jump on the open after stevemnuchin said the trade war is on hold. china agreed to buy billions of dollars in american agricultural goods. the big buzz in silicon valley will be over this book, bad blood, hits book stores today. the inside story of theranos. theranos is a blood testing company accused of fraud by the sec. its ceo once thought of as the next steve jobs. nobody says that anymore except there is one investor who gave elizabeth holmes or first million dollars and still believes in her. drape erin sifts the company was brought down by the media, not its own fraud. it's hard to believe that he believes that. >> you are so passionate about
5:16 am
defending elizabeth and her company. father to father, is that because you are a skilled venture capitalist, which you are, or is that because you -- i mean she was a friend of your daughter, met her when she was 19, you have been paternalistic towards her this whole time. how much of this passion is because you think she's a kind, decent skilled talented woman and how much is passion is based on spreadsheets and business? >> i would defend the entrepreneur absolutely in this kind of a case. no matter who that entrepreneur was. >> that was from sunday morning. our viewers wrote demanded management never all allowed me to put him on television again and another said he lost his mental faculties and other said we should have challenged him more. i do believe we say are you crazy in that one? it's full of challenges but that said, that's people's opinions. i don't know where he's coming from. when the sec says you've been
5:17 am
accused of fraud how the media somehow is at fault. >> interesting. it was a good show. thank you. >> all right, well, another thing for you this morning, another scare in the air. this time on frontier airlines, that plane heading to san diego from oklahoma it was diverted toal beto al bu querky after the flight attendant smelled something weird. listen to this as a california woman on board describes the panic. >> i think the scariest thing, i saw a couple of moms crying because their babies are on board and they are scared when you have to make an emergency landing and your baby is on board. so i felt bad for them. >> now emergency crews could not figure out what that smell was. can reque can say everybody is okay, justin convenienced. >> if you're leaving town, expect company. a record number of people will travel for memorial day. 41 million americans will go
5:18 am

5:19 am
we've seen what it looks like with imagery up there. very happy with visual results. >> now that display covers the top nine floors of the tower, special cameras will camera each day's images and light up the tower at night. now on a clear night, those images will be visible up to 20 miles away. so a great little scenery, go outside and say let's look up at the sky. >> look at the lights with me. >> except for if you're driving anywhere within those 20 miles. >> don't do it while you're driving. >> keep your eyes on the road. >> have a passenger describe it. >> coming off a great weekend. >> it was. >> we had such a nice weekend. i know some people like it a little bit warmer especially near the coast -- >> we'll get there, right? >> we'll get there eventually. let's not rush it. we've enjoyed nice steady temperatures from the morning clouds that we've seen but now as we take a live look outside in san rafael, we have clear skies and 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the
5:20 am
screen. let's go to the peninsula for some of the hiking trails will be a nice place to go. we'll see more clouds and fog and drizzle moving in by about 7:00 and still cool, 54 degrees at 10:00 today. now near the coast once again it's still going to be a cool day with upper 50s there while the south bay will make it into the mid-70s. a little bit warmer than it was yesterday, gilroy 74 degrees. we'll be at 72 today in danville, oakland today high of 65 and 59 in half moon bay. redwood city expect a high of 65 degrees. and 62 today in the mission district. in novato, 74 degrees. santa rosa 77. as we wake up and get the kids ready for school this morning in livermore, we'll be at 52. a cool start and partly cloudy skies and then some sunshine low 70s by the time they get out of school. and just to our east, we have some more rounds of showers and even some thunderstorms that will be developing today over the sierra. that will continue today overah

it winding down and firing up once again. this will cause breezy winds across the central valley. let me know what you're doing this weekend, whether you're going to the sierra, or going to bottle rock, i'm @kari hall weather on facebook. we'll talk about weekend plans in 20 minutes as we look at the 7-day forecast. today one of the warmer days of the week, 75 inland and for san francisco, low 60s over the next few days. mike says it's still a calm drive out there. >> it is, we're looking at the lighter flow of traffic right now and shifting towards the summertime schedule. kari talked about for elementary schools and high schools, southbound bay along the peninsula, an easy drive, south county the same thing, no problems reported there. it is over here just west of 680 and just outside of san ramon, we're looking at the closure that continues for crow canyon
5:22 am
road. we're looking at bollinger canyon road to norris canyon road as the at naxt. norris canyon takes much less traffic volume and that's the concern for the morning aside from the additional travel time for the reroute. bob redell continues that investigation. a body found in a car in the water just on the side of the roadway there. over here across the golden gate bridge, across the bay to the north. look at that beautiful sunrise. no problems over here. to the north bay you're at speed and over here for dublin, westbound 580, slows a bit through the altamont pass and back at speed by the time you get to the dublin interchange. >> it's 5:22 right now, coming up next on "today in the bay," unimaginable crime, the search for answers after police say a father drove through a restaurant on purpose killing his own daughter. >> so sad there. >> on a lighter note -- >> all of a sudden you hear a -- >> all of a sudden, i was taking a hike this weekend and i had a little guest slither by me.

police say a man drove his car in very sad story out of north carolina, police say a man drove his car into a restaurant on

purpose just to hurt his family. his daughter died. she was sitting inside with other family members. she's a sheriff's deputy off duty. the suspect's daughter-in-law was also there and died. other family members were hurt including the suspect's granddaughter and wife. he came in with his family before going back out to his car and then just crashing it. we have quite a little dog story to tell this morning. >> the star here is riley, this is an adorable lab. you see right here from santa rosa who has done many tv commercials as well as those films and this weekend, her owner left her in a car while he ran into the goodwill store. the car was running and windows were down. when he came out, that car was gone. and obviously so was riley. both of them stolen of the here's greg holland, riley's owner. >> panic set in, 911. the police were there immediately and everyone was there helping.
5:27 am
>> okay so greg is looking for riley of course but it turnsut o she was alreadyack home. greg's girlfriend found the dog in the backyard. so probably asking what happened here? here's santa rosa police department. >> what we've pieced together is that the suspect figured out there was a dog in the car and probably looked at the registration and glove box and drove to the address. >> look at that. okay, so that suspect joshua hathaway of santa rosa must be a dog lover here. riley was safe and the car stolen and riley's owner actually found it and the alleged thief. hathaway eventually crashed the car and was arrested. he's expected in court tomorrow. >> cute little dog there. >> coming up next, the cost of your commute could be going up. we break down a bridge toll hike on the june ballot. bay area mayor supporting that measure today and impact it will have on the roads you drive
5:28 am
every day. plus -- >> so terrifying. tell me it's just this neighborhood. >> no, it's not, the whole hill. >> that shocking footage from the front lines of the north bay wildfires. this morning a new look at the heroic rescue happening from officers trying to get everyone out safely.
5:29 am
5:30 am
good monday morning to you. 5:30 right now as we take a live
5:31 am
look at milpitas city hall. beautiful sight this morning as we get started with our day. thank you so much for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. >> hope you had a great weekend. let's check the forecast right now for monday with kari. >> not a bad start as we get ready to head out the door. we're seei clouds rolling by an at the golden gate bridge as you wake up this morning, maybe you'll be driving from the south bay up towards san francisco. we'll see mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-50s to start. look at that. our noontime temperature 68 degrees, we continue to warm up from there in the low 70s, up to 72 in san jose and 76 in antioch and santa rosa 77 and 62 today in san francisco. we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up and weekend and mike is checking the backup. >> we're tracking it as it forms at the bay bridge. cash lanes slow -- more slowing building in. maybe a lighter flow of traffic
5:32 am
overall. over in contra costa county and east shore freeway, that's moving nicely. outside castro valley and outside san ramon over here we have a chose you're for crow canyon road. this is the major concern right knew because this is as folks start to hit 580. you'll have to go down norris -- bollinger to norris canyon road as an alternate around the closure and you guys have the latest update. back to you. >> that's right. we want to get you up to date on that and we're geg brand-new information on the story we started bringing to you at 4:30 this morning. one person is dead after that car crashed into the pond in the east bay and we're just finding out that that car recovered was a tesla model s. that crash happened between castro valley and san ramon. we're working to find out more about the crash. that car was just recovered. bob redell is live at the scene and asking for questions for us this morning. he'll have a live report coming
5:33 am
up in a half hour. >> at 5:32. how much would you pay for a quicker commute? a live look at the bay bridge in san mateo bridges this morning. things can get backed up there. mayors of the bay area largest cities are joining forces to ask voters to say yes to paying a dollar more to use our seven bridges. >> kris sanchez is live at the dumbarton bridge. i know we're hearing a lot about those ads dealing with the june regional measure three right here. >> reporter: yeah, if it passes in june, if voters agree to that, the toll here for dumbarton bridge would go up to $6 next year and go up to $8 by 2025. let's talk about the reason why. now, the one dollar toll increase on all bridges except for the golden gate bridge would start in 2019 as i mentioned followed by another in 2022 and another one in 2025. this is an effort to raise $4.45 billion in funding in order to
5:34 am
relieve traffic on highways through the addition of express lanes and 101 improvement and other projects. but also to raise money to improve transit from b.a.r.t., caltrain and smart in the north bay to ferry service all around the bay area. so today mayor san jose shaft of oakland and mark farrell of san francisco will urge voters to agree to the toll hike. the silicon valley leerdship group and other business groups back the hike. on the other side proponent -- opponents i should say who state the measures and project that are rn3 would fun are just band aids that would burden commuters financially. i post polls on twitter and on facebook. and i want to know how you're leaning so far right now. there's been a lot of air play and radio ads and tv ads and a lot of mailers. how are you leaning on regional measure three. we'll be back with that part of the story at 6:30. at the dumbarton bridge, kris sanchez, "today in the bay."
5:35 am
>> thanks for keeping us informed and now that you're informed, it's time to prepare to vote. if you plan to vote in june on the primary, you better act fast. today is the last day to register to vote. you can register online or even fill out the paper card available in the city hall post office. there are big issues on the ballot including the governor's race. we hosted an exclusive governor's debate earlier this month in san jose. all of the top candidates took part in this. and you can see highlights from the debate and they talk about a lot of questions you probably talk about a lot of issues you're dealing with and go to nbcbayarea.com. >> we have intense video to show you, just how chaotic things got the night of the deadly north bay wildfires. >> it's huge. it's one of the biggest i've ever seen. >> please, it's not worth it. >> please get in the car and leave. >> this is when officers were going door to door pleading with people to leave and the video is coming from hundreds of hours of
5:36 am
police body camera footage obtained by the bay area news group. pete suratos joins us l more. it's hard to watch. almost chilling to watch this footage. but pete, you've also got new details on how many people say they weren't even notified when the flames erupted more than a year later. >> good morning to you, that's right. really this is first time we're getting a firsthand account of what everything looked like on the ground when the wildfires hit the north bay back in october. in fact it was jumping to the first clip, i want to show viewer, this is santa rosa police -- as the wildfire approaches. [ sirens ] >> get in my car, ma'am. get in my car. >> so terrifying. tell me it's just this neighborhood. >> no, it's not. the whole hill. >> reporter: that reaction you hear, that woman saying why is
5:37 am
really what you hear from a lot of residents as santa rosa police work to evacuate them back in october when you see this video, that was obtained bay the bay area news group, allowed them unsure of what's taking place behind them. let's get to the next video. you can see a woman that was dealing with smoke inhalation according to santa rosa police, they had to take her and group of people to the sheriff's office since they said the command center wasn't completely set up. now i want to jump into another video where you can see firefighters and police rescuing elderly people at the marina retirement community. interestingly enough, they said they were unable to find staff there so they had to use crow bars and battering rams just to gain entry into the rooms. in the final video, this is one of the most compelling ones i was able to view, you have santa rosa police rescuing elderly people in wheelchairs and you can see that fire approaching embers flying everywhere and overall you can see the first responders trying to show
5:38 am
compassion but also showing a level of urgency to get folks out of harm's way. i want to point out there's a new poll by the santa rosa press democrat that surveyed 500 snoem that county res departments on how they were warned when it came to the wildfires. i want to pull up that poll. you see the largest number at 43% of folks saying they received no warning. the second largest number in 28% you've got family members who notified them about the wildfires. now with all of that said, 59% of those feel the county is better prepared as a result of this disaster and they say they provided -- county officials provided effective leadership during the wildfires. live in marin county, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> so hard to watch that but showing resilience yens of first responders. >> thanks so much, pete. >> now we want to go to the last on hawaii's big island. new video of lava bubbling up in hawaii. that lava continues to spew out
5:39 am
destroying everything in its path. the lava actually now reaching the ocean. this is a picture of what it looks like now. that massive white plume known as laze filling the air. it sends hydrochloric acid and steam and fine glass particles. meantime, first time we're hearing about a serious injury reported. an airborne chunk of lava hit a man who was inside his home. here's his neighbor talking about it. >> in the hospital now and we'll see if he loses a foot or not. >> we're told that man is expected to survive. so far nearly 30 homes have been destroyed and there's no end in sight. >> at 5:39, new this morning, you know las vegas, they don't like to wait around when they have a good idea. the latest idea is hitting a little too close to home for raiders fans. nevada's dmv talking about a
5:40 am
raiders custom license plate. right now still no set design. this is just one of the mock-ups but it's supposed to be available when -- when the team is scheduled to move in in 2020. like salt to a wound to some raiders fans here. >> you know, las vegas, you can drive it. i wouldn't suggest you drive here with that nevada license plate. to the south bay where traffic flows smoothly. peninsula, nice drive as well. raiders license plates from nevada, a smooth drive through the area and smooth flow of traffic across the bay bridge but metering lights are on over there. as we look outside we'll see richmond to san rafael bridge shows traffic just starting too build a little bit over towards the north bay. >> the weekend? >> i redid the lawn by hand. >> you did? >> i did.
5:41 am
it was a lot harder than i thought -- >> i would have hired you to do mine had i known. >> 10 or 20 years. >> hopefully not. >> we've had great weather though over the weekend. >> weather was perfect sfwl a lot of people got out there and did things in the yard. you'll have this weekend too if you didn't finish up, mike, you'll have nice weather. we'll be up to 70 degrees inland, the bay at 68 degrees and 60 degrees for the coast on sunday reaching the low 60s and mid-70s for the inland areas. what are you doing this weekend? if you're going to bottle rock in napa valley, you'll have perfect weather, low 70s and sunshine. by sunday we're up to 78 degrees and for heavenly, looking at lake tahoe, we'll still have daily showers and thunderstorms firing up and warm weather, mid-60s on friday. i'll have a look at today's temperature trend in san jose coming up in three minutes. >> sounds good, thank you, kari. >> coming up on "today in the bay," tackling the issue of gun
5:42 am
violence, as the nation mourns another loss of life. the action leaders are talking about nch the president is demanding another probe into the fbi when "today in the bay" continues.
5:43 am
5:44 am
it's 5:44, some are seeing clear skies and sunshine. a few more clouds as we look outside in san jose. as we go to santa theresa for our temperature trend we'll be at 7:00 at 55 degrees, reaching
5:45 am
in the low 60s at 11:00, gradual warm-up until the sun breaks out and then it will be a very nice and comfortable afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week and big weekend plans coming up in five minutes. >> right now an easy drive along the peninsula. there's the southbound with the headlights, picking up a little volume but no slowing. we'll show you the rest of the peninsula and also the progress i heard about in the east bay coming up. >> we'll check in with you. at quarter to 6:00, this morning yet again. after another deadly school shooting. ten people dead in santa fe texas and today here at home, peninsula students join lawmakers to fight against gun violence. state senator scott weiner and ting and students will be in daly city to announce new legislation. it's not clear what the bill will call for but students involved have been involved in protest against gun shows held
5:46 am
