moment with mike but kari, you have a look what to expect today. >> it's going to be a cloud i didn't start for parts of the bay area and clearing out again today, it's going to be slightly warmer with highs reaching in the low 70s inland. right now in san jose, we see the clouds moving by. santa clara will have mid-50s through 8:00. then we'll reach into the low 70s early this afternoon as we go to martinez, it will be slightly warmer up to 77 at 2:00 today. we'll talk about that and what else is ahead for the rest of the week. mike gets u.s. out the door with a look at the commute. >> we're talking about folks leaving tri valley and heading through castro valley. the freeways themselves just pick gs up a light volume over pleasanton and abo crow canyon road all morning i've been warning folks that that is no longer a cut through. it is just reopened. bob redell will give an update in just a second. but did want me to tell you, crow canyon has reopened after an overnight investigation and bollinger canyon will see more traffic as some folks will head to norris canyon road.

crow canyon is okay connecting you from 680 towards 580 and that will build through the area and folks will build out of concord heading south into walnut creek. for the rest of the crash, back to you marcus. >> 6:01. as mike had mentioned, we have been following breaking news all morning long. this isny video into the newsroom, new picture that you're seeing right there of the deadly accident. this is on a major road near castro valley. and you can tell it is a tesla there. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene. you've told us about the body discovered as well as the make of that car. what else have you been able to find out? >> reporter: marcus, we know there's only one person who died in this accident, that was the adult driver, a man according to chp, it happened a little bit before 8:00. the driver was in that blue model s said dan, making the bend on crow canyon and for

whatever reason his car went through the fence. you can see it up and through a sign, what used to be a sign and on the back side of that sign is a pond. that's where the model s ended up. a property owner called authorities last night and saw the wreckage and put together atwo and two together, the dive team came out here along with the fire department and chp and the divers did find the man as i mentioned unfortunately passed away in the front seat of that vehicle. they did pull out that vehicle within the overnight hours and as you can see in the video here, it suffered a extreme amount of damage, perhaps in part because it did have to crash through the sign. not clear if that vehicle was upsidedown or right side up but they have since removed that. the chp says and we can see here there are no skid marks on the road, there's no indication the car or driver tried to break before crashing through the white fence. chp will look into whether speed

with a factor or the driver had been under the influence and whether that car had any mechanical problems. right now they don't have an idea of what caused this reporting live, along crow canyon road bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, bob for that update. 6:03. developing this morning, investigators are still looking for answers after friday's deadly shooting at santa fe high school in texas. ten people were killed and 13 others injured. music's biggest acts honored the victims of that shooting at the bill board music awards last night. texas native kelly clarkson delivered a tearful opening speech. >> i'm so sick of moment of silence, my god, it's not working. >> meantime the first funeral was held on the same day seniors from the high school participated in a traditional back laure yet services had to be moved to a nearby church since the school is still

closed. wendy is live with what we're learning about the suspect. wendy? >> reporter: marcus and laura, good morning to you, the governor called for a moment of silence at 10:00 a.m. local time across the state of texas. that as investigators are poring over the suspect's journals to try to answer the question we're all wondering, why? ♪ >> a grieving community unified when their faith is tested. >> this world is got world in the toilet bowl and we need help. because what we're doing ain't working. >> the texas town mourning the loss of eight students and two teachers, allegedly gunned down at the hands of a fellow student, 17-year-old dimitrios pagourtzis. >> i don't know what went his head. >> reporter: he open fire with a shotgun and revolver that he took from his father after planting explosives in his own

"today" show will continue coverage on the texas school shooting and what we're now learning about the shooter and how long he was reportedly planning the attack coming up at 7:00 right after the "today in the bay." >> now to news out of washington, president trump will officially demand the justice department look into whether the fbi spied on his 2016 campaign. the deputy attorney general says if true, he needs to know and take appropriate action. so the department is expanding

its probe. here's how we got here. last week the the president accused the fbi of em bedding a spy on his campaign staff. the fbi did send an informant, not a spy to talk with trump campaign aides in 2016. as that happened, after finding evidence of suspicious contacts with russian officials. here's the president's lawyer. >> all he's asking for is to investigate it. he's not telling them what to conclude. it's perfectly appropriate. >> democrats are responding, here's a tweet from san francisco's nancy pelosi saying in part he has quote, insulted and tried to discredit the men and women of the fbi and doj to distract from the trump russia scandal. >> 6:06. this has to be shocking to many parents out there, the board members of an east bay charter school are holding an emergency hearing today after the surprise exit of three leaders. amidst hem husband and wife all

controversy surrounding finances and questionable hires at clayton valley charter high school. contra costa county office of education launching its own audit. board members plan to name new leaders and discuss potential lawsuits. >> a twitter rant is costing a palo alto pastor his job. first bap tich chust associate pastor gregory stevens called the city elitists den of hate and disgusting in public tweets. he also criticized the church's elderly community. the rant all stems from a disagreement between the church and the city about permission to lease the building to outside tenants as a community center. stevens apologized and resigned from the congregation and removed his twitter account. >> okay, in case you didn't remember, this is where we remind you that the warriors are one of the best nba teams ever. >> there you go. >> the dubs took care of

degrees. 73 in livermore and oakland 65 degrees. 77 today in santa rosa. we'll talk about a slight cooldown for the week coming up in a few minutes and mike gets us out the door with a look at the san mateo bridge. >> we have a new issue for folks traveling west bounds across san mateo bridge and now see slowing on the flat section towards the foster city side. there's a stalled vehicle reported just before you make landfall there near foster city boulevard. and so you see the slowing from the high rise and actually making its way back on the flat section as well. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. highway 92 a problem. might want to consider the dumbarton bridge. meanwhile southbound 880 past 238, there's a crash and may be blocking your fast lane. we see some additional slowing there and of course slowing typical down through hayward and union city. castro -- concord moving a little slower than you might like for 680. castro valley and san ramon connected again.

there. here's the full lineup for you. the voice starts at 8:00 right here on nbc bay area. and then at 10:00, it's a new episode of running wild with bear grylls followed by nbc bay area news at 11:00. tomorrow night, the finale of the voice starts at 9:00. 6 toimg :18, a little coolee bay area, which is nice. >> is that trend going to continue? >> it's going to continue through the week. no major changes here. we'll be a little warmer for the inland areas in the bay today. after that we go back to our low 70s. let's get a live look outside in san rafael as the sun rises, beautiful start and that's the way you wake up on a monday morning. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen starting in the south bay and you see once again not many changes here as we head up to 72 today and downtown san jose morgan hill and also into antioch today, 76 degrees.

we'll be at 72 in danville and hayward up to 67. and some upper 50s for half moon bay. while redwood city tops out at 65 and we'll be at 62 today in the mission district. north bay up to 76 degrees and sonoma and 77 in santa rosa. it will be cool along the coast, the peninsula still seeing the fog and drizzle by 7:00 to 10:00 then partly cloudy skies. we'll see the highs in the upper 50s today and gusty winds. we've also had those winds gusting over pardons of the central valley, rushing in the central storms in the sierra. we'll see storms firing up again today. as we go through the afternoon, still showers and storms around south lake tahoe and tomorrow once again. head's up if you're going to the sierra this week. each day will see afternoon storms and let me know what you're doing this weekend. i'm @kari hall weather.

we're looking at the 7-day forecast for the inland areas and mid-70s for today, low 70s the rest of the week. still not really bad and san francisco holds those temperatures steady with highs in the low 60s. as we head over to mike, you have an update, what's happening for the drive. >> overall the drive looks great except for behind me the san mateo bridge, this is the tough drive. it's not on the flat section or high rises just over there on foster city side where reports of a disabled vehicle blocking one lane. but that's how much of a problem happens when this happens just after 6:00. we'll show you that on the maps you also see that red across the san mateo bridge and west 84, the dumb bar continue grij. you can see more traffic and that's the shift that happens out of hayward through union city and towards fremont. we'll show you on the waze system what they are mapping out as far as the travel time. waze is saying -- traffic by 20 minutes if you head southbound towards the dumbarton bridge towards palo alto.

the initial test run and spoke to the designer jim campbell. >> i'm less stressed about it now and more excited because we've seen what it looks like with imagery up there. very happy with the visual results. >> the light display covers the top nine floors of the tower. special cameras will capture each day's images and light the tower at night. on a clear night the images should be visible up to 20 miles away. >> well, we have quite the doggy tale this morning. >> the star here is riley, an adorable lab from santa rosa who's done a lot of television ads in phil more before but her owner left her in the car while he ran into a goodwill store. the engine was running and windows were down. when he came out the car was gone and so was riley. both stolen. here's greg holland riley's owner. >> panic set in, 911, the police were there immediately and everyone was there helping. >> so he went to go look for his dog but it turns out she was

already back home. greg's girlfriend found her in the backyard. what happened? here's santa rosa police. >> what we've pieced together is that the suspect figured out there was a dog in the car and probably looked at the registration in the glove box and drove to the address. >> drove to the address and dropped off the dog. then took the car. the suspect joshua hathaway of santa rosa had to be a dog lover. riley was safe and as for the stolen car, riley's owner found it and the alleged thief, hathaway eventually kracrashed car and was arrested. riley's owner also intends to speak on the thief's behave because he's so grateful riley was brought home safely. >> riley looks like she's doing quite well this morning. >> i think so. >> paying more for your commute. doesn't sound great but we'll tell you the reason mayors of

the work week-- as we take a live right now at 6:30 on your monday morning, we're off to a school start for the workweek as we take a live look from milpitas city hall. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. >> let's head over to kari hall with a look at to what expect weatherwise and the forecast looking decent today. >> it looks really nice, even though some parts of the bay area start off with clouds we'll get that clearing out as the morning goes along. live look in san jose after a great weekend in campbell celebrating with the boogy on the avenue going on. we'll see the skies clearing this morning and it's time to get to work. we'll see highs reaching in the low 70s. our seven-day forecast for inland areas, mid-70s today and low 70s for the rest of the week. the weekend is still looking pretty good. no major change here. we'll talk about some things going on around the bay area and places you may be headed in about seven minutes.

mike, now you have an alert from muny riders. sfwl we've heard muny advising folks to take an alternate through church, some sort of police activity. we're following that in the newsroom. i can tell muny riders, definitely popular spot as well. expect optional -- other transportation. we're looking at options and i'll retweet as well. the rest of the bay looks good except for one key spot, san mateo westbound which may clear in the next few minutes. for the dumbarton is the alternate san mateo bridge looks like this. avoid westbound 92. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we continue to monitor that breaking news in the east bay. one person is dead after a tesla model s crashed into a pond in the east bay. that happened between castro valley and san ramon. we're working to find out more.

we can tell you the car was just recovered. >> it is 6:31. we know how expensive it is to live in the bay area and it's also expensive to commute here as well. a lot of us have to pay several dollars every day to cross a bridge and soon you could end up paying even more. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at the dumbarton with a ballot initiative that would increase patrols once again. good morning, chris. >> hi there, most of these cars are paying $5 today, $6 next year and $8 by 2025 if rm 3 passes in june. let's get to the reason why regional measure 31 blot. that one dollar toll increase on all bridges except for golden gate bridge would start in 2019 followed by another buck in 2022 and 2025, an effort to raise $4.45 billion in funding in order to relief traffic on

highways through the addition of express lanes and improvements to highway 101 and other projects. it would raise money to improve transit from b.a.r.t. and c caltrains around the bay. who says yes? today mayors sam ricardo and shaft of oakland and mark farrell of san francisco will urge voters to agree to the toll hike. the silicon valley leadership group also supports it. others say it is bandaids to a bigger problem that would burden commuters financially. i did post polls both in my twitter feed and facebook page because we want to know how you're leaning at this point. so far it looks to be about 50/50 on twitter and on facebook. no one is commenting just yet. tell me where you get your information and how you plan on voting in june. again, that would raise the fares -- the tolls starting next year, 2019. at the dumbarton bridge, kris

>> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. these body cam videos give a firsthand act of what took place during the north bay wildfires. i want to show you this first clip to our viewers of santa rosa police evacuating residents and specific resident as that fire approaches. >>. >> get in my car, mamg. get in my car. >> so terrifying. tell me it's just this neighborhood. >> no, it's not, the whole hill. >> reporter: that reaction you're hearing from the woman is what you hear from many of the residents as santa rosa police work to evacuate them from coffey park in fountain grove back in october. that's what i picked up from the video, a lot of unsure of what's taking place is that fire approaches their neighborhood. now i want to get to next video.

you can see one woman dealing with smoke inhalation, santa rosa police had to take her and group of people too the sheriff's office and demacomman center wasn't completely set up. a lot of chaos as the wildfire took over. in the next video you can see firefighters and police rescuing elderly people at the marina retirement community. in that video they say they were unable to find staff and they had to use crow bars and battering rams to gain entry in the rooms. in the final video, you've got santa rosa police rescuing elderly people, this time w in the distance the fire approaching an embers just flying everywhere at that point. overall you can see first responders really trying to show some compassion but also they have to show that level of urgency to get folks out of harm's way. we are seeing a new poll by the santa rosa press democrat surveyed 500 residents how they were warned when it came to wildfires. you see on the screen, 45% said

they did not receive a warning. second there at 28% they got a warning from a family member. with all of that said, folks in the survey, 59% felt the county is better prepared as a result of this disaster and they believe the county officials provided effective leadership during the wildfires. we're live in marin county, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> heartbreaking to hear. thank you very much. now to the very latest on hawaii's big island, lava from kilau kilauea volcano now reaching the ocean creating dangerous conditions. look at the new video into our newsroom showing lava bubbling up hawaii how intense this situation is. this is what it looks like as the lava is hitting the ocean water, a massive white plume known as laze is filling the air. it sends hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles in the air. it can damage people's lungs and irritate eyes and skin. in the meantime, the first

serious injury is being reported and airborne chunk of lava hit a man inside his home. here's his neighbor. >> in the hospital now and we'll see if he loses a foot or not. >> the man is expected to survive. so far nearly 30 homes are destroyed and there's no end in sight. >> 6:38, in a follow-up to last week's fire at the peninsula auto body parts shop. this happened early friday morning. we brought that news to you here "today in the bay" in san mateo. a short time ago kris sanchez got an update from san mateo's battalion chief, he says that a team handling that environmental clean upwill be on site for next two weeks and that the inventory will likely be a total loss. >> we're looking over for are your commute. the south bay starting to see

the northbound push but we're doing that shift in towards the summertime commute pattern. looking at westbound 237. there is a crash just shy of 101 also where you see the slowing through sunnyvale. watch for both of those bits of activity. we're going to zoom out and show you the rest of the bay. overall things are looking good and bay bridge does have metering lights on and san mateo bridge which is very slow. if you can't see it on the sensors let me show it to you in a live camera shot. that's a slow drive on the west side to the disabled vehicle still over on the city size. use the dumbo. >> use the dumbo. >> a monday morning and never too early to think ahead to the weekend. >> a lot of festivals and -- >> graduations. >> yeah, very busy time of the year. you're looking ahead to the weekend and for the inland areas we'll be up to 70 degrees and bay at 68. 64 the coast and for sunday, it's still going to be really

coming up in less than five minutes. >> you choose which bridge to take, the bay bridge or dumbarton but the san mateo bridge is the one to avoid. we'll give you the updates crossing the bay and around the bay coming up. thanks, mike. 6:44 right now. happening today, san francisco supervisors may agree to raise the cost to develop in the city. the examiner reports the land used in transportation committee gets to vote today. it won't directly affect your wallet but it would increase the amount developers pay. it's an effort to offset the cost the city has the use -- people use that transit to go to shops and restaurants. the man behind the plan tells the paper that the city has a nearly $22 billion backlog on transportation projects. >> this morning the nation searches for answers yet again after another deadly school shooting. ten people died in santa fe.

degrees and 75 in concord. look at santa rosa today, 77 degrees. san francisco low 60s. as you're getting dressed this morning, if you feel a little cool, you may want to make sure you grab a hat. other than that light long sleeves may be comfortable as we go throughout the day. in concord, probably short sleeves as it will be much warmer there reaching up to 77 degrees by 3:00 today and we'll hit that temperature for a couple of hours and then start to cool off. and then we've also had showers and thunderstorms firing up over the sierra each and every day, this still continues with an area of the disturbed weather to the east of us and also caused the winds over the central valley too rush in the sierra as storms develop. we'll see that again today. it's going to be windy in parts of the bay area because of that but we're not going to see any rain. we will continue on with our dry weather not only today but the rest of the week. looking at low 70s, slightly cooler tomorrow with a ocean breeze and for san francisco, it's going to be

breezy tomorrow reaching up to 61, low 60s for the rest of the week. mike, still says you want to avoid the san mateo bridge. >> you do. there's that disabled vehicle over on the foster city side, that is the one long stretch of red we see on the speed sensors. the tri valley looks great. south bay starting to show the build. the dumbarton bridge instead of san mateo bridge. let's show you what we're talking about. here's a slower drive we'll look at it on the waze system, not just the sensors but also travel times and going in hayward towards palo alto, across the bay, blue line shows an hour and 23 minutes. the purple line to the dumbarton bridge, 57 minutes, you're saving almost 25 minutes there and then the green light saves a toll but you have to go past the crash in sunnyvale. join nbc bay area wazers. the team name and traffic information will reveal itself to team members as well. we'll get out to the maps again and show you what else we're talking about. a delay or actually avoid
