guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." thank you so much. nice to have you with us on a monday morning. we've been following what's happening in hawaii for weeks now, but can we show you the live shot that our correspondent, miguel almaguer, is at this morning? that is exactly -- >> miguel's getting in position there, yeah. >> he says it actually -- he's at a safe distance, but i think that really puts a fine point on what the folks in hawaii are dealing with. >> exactly, says he can definitely feel the heat from there. we'll talk to him in a little bit. >> we will. but let's get to our top story, the investigation into the school shooting in santa fe, texas. police are learning more about the confessed gunman as a still-reeling community remembers the loss. nbc's gabe gutierrez has more for us. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. school remains closed as investigators pore over the suspect's journals to try and find out exactly how long he had been plotting the attack. this morning, ten lives are

being remembered after the massacre at santa fe high school. >> it's been a nightmare. >> ashley perkins proudly wears her mother's necklace. ann perkins was a substitute teacher who is now being honored as a hero. >> she protected students, getting them out of there in the last moments of her life. >> reporter: sabika chic chshee exchange student from pakistan, also losr t her service for her at a local mosque. >> she wanted to be a businesswoman. she says she wanted to impact the world, and i think she's done that. >> so, i can't do gaming videos because of my computer -- >> reporter: shana fisher had just turned 16. her mother says she was the first student killed and had been harassed by the suspected shooter for four months, rejecting his romantic advances, although authorities have not confirmed the motive. she tells nbc news there were red flags. >> he had t-shirts on his website, facebook page, "born to kill." it had a uniform with certain markers that could be viewed as

potentially threatening. ♪ >> reporter: this video obtained by tmz shows the accused gunman, 17-year-old dimitrios pagourtzis dancing at a church event the weekend before the shooting. according to witnesses, he burst into a classroom friday wearing a trench coat and yelled "surprise!" even taunting his victims during the carnage, singing "another one bites the dust" in between shots. but his attorney says pa gourt zis is a teenager with no criminal record. were any red flags missed? >> we don't believe so. >> reporter: unlike park mend, this is not spurring morecals for gun control in deep red texas. >> you should never get rid of guns, because in my opinion, the officer in there, the only way he kept that student from harming and killing more kids was with a gunfire. >> reporter: instead, the state's lieutenant governor says teachers should be allowed to be armed and schools should have fewer entrances. >> there should be one or two entrances at most, and we should have law enforcement looking at

those entrances. >> reporter: overnight, singing superstar kelly clarkson, host of the "billboard music awards" and texas native, making an emotional plea against gun violence. >> and once again, y'all, we're grieving for more kids that have died. why don't we not do a moment of silence? why don't we do a moment of action? why don't we do a moment of change? why don't we change what's happening? >> reporter: among the 13 people wounded, officer john barnes, who confronted the gunman. this morning he remains in the hospital. authorities say if not for him, the death toll would have been much higher. savannah and hoda? >> all right, gabe, thank you. also this morning, we are learning more about just how long the special counsel's investigation of president trump could last, and now the president is demanding an investigation of that investigation. nbc national correspondent peter alexander's at the white house with all of this. hey, peter, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. president trump just weeks ago warned at some point he would no longer stay away from the justice department. well, apparently, that point just came with the president demanding that the doj examine

whether his campaign was infiltrated and, in fact, calling for his government to investigate the investigators. now g. facing mounting political pressure from the president, the justice department this morning says it's asking its inspector general to expand a review of whether the department and the fbi abuse their spy powers during the 2016 campaign. now it will determine whether there was any impropriety or political motivation. deputy attorney general rod rosenstein in a statement, writing, "if anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action." the announcement a swift response to a presidential demand. mr. trump vowing sunday on twitter, "i hereby demand and will do so officially tomorrow, that the department of justice look into whether the fbi, doj infiltrated the trump campaign for political purposes. and if any such demands or

requests were made by people within the obama administration." that demand following reports in "the new york times" and "washington post" that an fbi informant made contact with three members of the trump campaign as the bureau began investigating possible election interference. the president's lawyer, rudy giuliani, who said that he and the president don't know for sure if there really was an informant in the trump campaign, speaking to nbc news defending mr. trump's position. >> all he's asking for is for them to investigate it. he's not telling them what to conclude, so it's perfectly appropriate. >> reporter: the top democrat on the house intelligence committee, adam schiff, dismissing president trump's spy claim as nonsense, describing the president's demand as an abuse of power and an effort to distract from his growing legal problems. the president also lashing out inquiry is expanding, tweeting sarcastically -- "the witch hunt finds no collusion with russia, so now they're looking at the rest of the world.

oh, great." it comes as "the new york times" reports donald trump jr. hosted a meeting at trump tower a few months before the election with three men, including a representative of two wealthy arab princes, one from saudi arabia, the other from the united arab emirates, who said they were eager to help his father win the election. trump jr.'s lawyer telling nbc news "they pitched mr. trump jr. on a social media platform or marketing strategy. he was not interested and that was the end of it." >> peter, let's go back to rudy giuliani, the president's lawyer. he says he knows when special counsel mueller will be done with this investigation? >> reporter: yes, savannah, that's right. rudy giuliani telling nbc news that the special counsel, robert mueller's team told him that they're hoping to wrap up the investigation by september 1st. of course, mueller's team isn't commenting publicly. it's important, though, because the president's team is effectively here trying to publicly frame the expectations, in effect setting an out day. giuliani also tells us he plans to write a counter report that

may or may not become public, depending on what robert mueller's team finds. savannah and hoda? >> peter, thank you so much. now to the ongoing state of emergency on hawaii's big island. the volcano there continues to erupt. and take a look at what's happening behind our national correspondent miguel almaguer right now. he says he's at a safe distance from that molten lava. i'm glad to hear that, but i know you can feel the heat. >> reporter: absolutely, savannah. a spectacular, unreal scene as this massive fissure has broken open. we're a safe distance away. even several hundred yards away, you can feel the heat and power of it. this geyser here is shooting more than 50 feet into the air. all this lava is creating a river, and it's pouring right into the ocean. today, kilauea is erupting with vengeance, sending rivers of fiery, red lava pouring into the ocean. these new, dramatic images capturing the explosion of steam

when the two meet. towering geysers of lava are moving faster, burning hotter and more violently than ever before. with molten fireballs launching through the air, a soaring lava bomb has now struck its first victim. our crew was there as marc klaasen searched for his injured neighbor, putting out the home that caught fire after a red-hot rock shot into his friend's leg and rolled across the balcony. >> took a pretty good hit to the lower leg, and he's in the hospital now. and we'll see if he loses a foot or not. >> reporter: with new fissures exploding out of the ground over the weekend, a sea of lava is now pouring into the ocean. the steamy combustion when it hits water creating a new threat known as laze, hydrochloric acid gas mixing with tiny shards of

volcanic glass that drifts across the air. getting too close can irritate eyes and lungs. with at least four more structures destroyed over the weekend, a curtain of fire is now rolling over a highway, cutting off a vital escape route for coastal residents. >> we have two cats. they wouldn't leave, so i said good-bye to them. and everything else. >> reporter: as kilauea's crater erupted again saturday, a blanket of ash is creating even more health concerns on the big island. the volcano, a caldron of trouble, exploding into the air, across the land, and now out at sea. >> miguel, these fissures are massive. we can see on those big, wide shots, you're standing right smack in front of one. just give us a little bit more on what that is like. >> reporter: well, hoda, this fissure, which is certainly violent, has not been explosive,

but i want to show you our second camera to give you some perspective of the length of these fissures. the fissure itself runs a few hundred yards. that's those fountains of geysers you see flying into the air. but the river of lava actually stretches for several miles. it winds all the way down to the ocean. but hoda, i can tell you, at this location, they are not worried about the lava pouring into the ocean. they are worried about homes. we're not far from where several neighborhoods stand. if more fissures like these open up, more homes will certainly be lost. hoda? >> miguel, stay safe for us and thanks for everything. we do have a lot more to get to this morning, including a deadly crash in north carolina that poliel a driver ramming into a restaurant where members of his family were inside. here's nbc's catie beck. >> reporter: this morning, police are trying to determine why a man may have intentionally crashed his car into this north carolina restaurant. >> our initial investigation,

the officer got there, saw a car completely in the building of the surf 'n turf's lodge and saw multiple injuries. >> reporter: witnesses tell local affiliate wcnc that roger self walked into this restaurant with his family, then returned to his car and drove it right into the building at high speed where they were sitting. >> 249 to county, hold the channel. we've got -- >> reporter: self's pastor and good friend, austin rammel, telling wsoc tv that the suspect had been suffering from mental illness and had sought medical help after mental breakdowns in recent months. rammel also says self had all the guns removed from his house. among the dead, the suspect's own daughter, kaitlin self, an off-duty sheriff's deputy. she was a four-year veteran of the gaston county sheriff's office. her colleagues now in mourning, writing on facebook, "our hearts are broken and we ask for your thoughts and prayers during this

difficult time, not only for katelyn's family and friends, but also her brothers and sisters in uniform." >> this young lady started out as a detention center, worked her way up to deputy. tragic, tragic loss to life. so we're suffering a little bit right now. >> reporter: the other woman killed was amanda self, the suspect's daughter-in-law who worked as a nurse. several additional family members were injured, including roger self's son, granddaughter, and wife, who needed surgery, and according to police, is not in good shape. one witness, a young employee at the restaurant, was bussing tables right before the horrific incident and tried to help the injured. >> i was back there moving debris off people and helping any way i could. >> reporter: for "today," catie beck, nbc news. a manhunt is under way for two murder suspects who escaped a south carolina jail. officials say three inmates overpowered a correctional officer at the orangeburg county detention center on saturday

night and broke free. one of those inmates was captured last night, but the other two, 27-year-old tyshon johnson and 20-year-old curtis green are still on the run this morning. they're considered dangerous, and officials are warning residents in that area to be on the lookout. we're going to switch gears now. everybody seems to be still talking about the wedding of the year. prince harry and meghan markle tying the knot in an unforgettable ceremony at windsor castle, and today they are settling into life in their new home on the grounds of kensington palace. we are just off the plane. we are back, and so is keir simmons. keir, you might have had had the best spot. you were right inside the walls at windsor castle. >> what a weekend, right? what a weekend! and we have more details from the wedding for you, as harry and meghan delayed their honeymoon for at least a week to make more public appearances. and wait until you hear how the palace is describing meghan on their official website. the kiss, the quiet --

>> we're waking up to sunshine in parts of the bay area. we can see the clouds rolling by as we look outside in san jose then as we look at the high temperatures for the afternoon, we'll be in the low 70s for south county and south bay. san jose 72 degrees. 74 today in walnut creek, 65 in oakland and 70 in palo alto. san francisco reaches in the upper 50s and low 60s with breezy winds and north bay at the time expect a high of 77 in santa rosa and 74 in napa. what's happening with the commute, mike? >> the south bay is seeing a little more traffic, nothing dramatic but we're looking at san mateo and dumbarton look slow westbound but all lanes are cleared from the westbound commute as foster city has a disabled vehicle a half hour ago. northbound 85 in the south bay, the worst traffic. right now heading towards sara towing ga and slows and if folks take fast track, going to the

that was the first thing i thought. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to batali for comment but he declined. he vehemently denied the allegation to cbs. batali stepped away from his businesses late last year after several women accused him of inappropriate touching over the course of two decades. at the time, batali apologized in a statement, saying in part, much of the behavior described does match up with ways i have acted. that behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. i take full responsibility and am deeply sorry for any pain, humiliation or discomfort i have caused to my peers, employees, customers, friends and family. >> this festival wasisnd. >> reporter: it comes amid a jaw-dropping condemnation at the cannes film festival. >> in 1997, i was raped by harvey weinstein here at cans. cannes.

i was 21 years old. >> reporter: taking aim at disgraced mogul harvey weinstein. at the first cannes film festival in the era of the #metoo movement. >> i want to make a prediction. harvey weinstein will never be welcomed here ever again. he will live in disgrace. >> reporter: her boyfriend, anthony bourdain, calling her address a fearless off-script nuclear bomb of a speech to a stunned crowd. weinstein's lawyer saying in a statement in part, the allegations made are completely false. mr. weinstein and ms. argento had a consensual relationship. the statement says in 1998, argento starred in one of weinstein's films. she first accused him of assault in a bombshell "new yorker" article published in october of

last year. she's 1 of 95 women who have publicly accused weinstein of sexual harassment, misconduct or rape. weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex. police in los angeles, new york and london have been investigating allegations against weinstein. no charges have been filed. >> have the nypd said anything about an investigation? >> reporter: right. into batali. we reached out to the nypd. a spokesperson confirms to nbc news, they are investigating allegations of sexual assault against batali. in december, nbc determine nated his relationship with him. he appeared on the show "the chew." they said they were unaware of inappropriate behavior involving him on that show. we're going to switch gears and talk to mr. roker about the weather. hey, al. >> our friends in the midwest and the upper ohio river valley, looking at strong storms. we are watching a slight risk

we're back with one of the worst disasters in history. >> the infamous johnstown flood that claimed the lives of 2,200 people. 20 million tons of debris down a mountain at 40 miles per hour, decimating that western pennsylvania town. it changed the town forever. >> the weather was story about that event in 1889. let's go to the forecast on that fateful day. >> it was unbelievable. we had a big storm system, a weird year of weather. heavy storms made their way across the country.

sunday, the storm system started in california on sunday the 26th of may, 1889. by monday, it was making its way across the country, causing massive problems, intense rain in nebraska. kansas had violent winds. and wednesday, the 29th into thursday and friday, the system continued to the east. severe rain, wind from michigan to tennessee. thursday into friday, the system slows up, parks itself over pennsylvania because of a high-pressure system that blocked it. now, we're talking about more than a foot of rain falling on this western pennsylvania area after melting snows. it was a torrential downpour that caused a massive failure of a dam and the rest is history. >> we know it captivated you because you wrote a book about it. it's called "ruthless tide: the heroes and villains of the johnstown flood." congratulations on writing the book. i don't know how you do it. what about this caught your

attention and make you want to delve into it? >> i heard about the johnstown flood. more people died in that flood than any time since that history. it was an unbelievable amount of rain. it was also the carelessness of a group of 1%ers. they wanted their getaway in the mountains of pennsylvania. they created a manmade lake with a dam that was inferior. and people said something bad was going to happen. and may 1st, 1889, it did. >> they didn't have the weather tools to predict things. did they know it was going to be this bad? >> not at the beginning. they just had installed telephones at this point. there was nobody at the club to make a phone call. there was a telegraph operator who sent messages because somebody rode from the dam down there. once they got word down to folks in johnstown, nobody believed it. when this dam broke at 3:10 in

the afternoon, 20 million tons of water left that lake in 30 minutes. and within an hour, made its way down, destroying the towns. >> you look at the big story. you focus on some individual stories. there's a 6-year-old survivor who had an epoch tale. >> gertrude was on this river of debris and flame and fire, by herself on a mattress. >> wow. >> she happened -- there's a guy who is an ironworker who sees her. he has been riding on a roof. somebody said, throw us the baby. he jumps into the flaming water, grabs the baby and tosses her to the other people as he continues downriver. and they both survived. >> you wonder how min sanyone survived. i hadn't heard of this. it wasn't one of the weather events that your average person has heard of. >> clara barton, who just started the red cross, came into prominence because of this.
