"early today" starts right now. >> good tuesday morning. i'm frances rivera. >> and i'm phillip mena. a manhunt is under way in baltimore after a police officer was killed responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle in a suburban neighborhood. officials say the female officer was critically injured after a confrontation and taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. authorities are now asking anyone with information to call police. nbc's pete williams has more. >> reporter: in the air and on the ground, state and local police launched an urgent manhunt in a suburb of baltimore, maryland after a baltimore county police officer was killed. >> can you let us know if you have any vehicle description or anything? >> reporter: she had been dispatched to check out reports of a suspicious vehicle. police say it appeared the people in the vehicle had broken into a house. >> she encountered the suspects, and she was critically injured. our officer was transported to the franklin square hospital where she was pronounced deceased at 2:50 p.m.

lawmakers in the house of representatives is calling for a second special counsel to be appointed today. they're set to introduce a resolution claiming, quote, misconduct at the highest level of the doj and fbi, demanding the investigation of the fbi over the alleged surveillance of donald trump's 2016 presidential campaign. as they continue to call for the end of robert mueller's russia investigation. their demands coming after the president summoned top justice department, fbi, and intelligence officials to the white house as he too demands answers amid reports his campaign was surveilled. nbc's tracie potts has more for us from washington. hey, tracie, good morning. >> hey, phillip, good morning. good morning, everyone. in addition to the president's tweets over the last few days about this, we are also now hearing from vice president pence. he says this is disturbing and americans should be concerned about it. >> we read the press reports, but it's all very troubling. it's all very troubling to those of us that hold the fbi in such

high regard, that there are even allegations that people were assigned to surveil or even spy on our campaign. >> reporter: on monday, president trump called the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein and the head of the fbi, chris wray, to the white house to talk about this. the white house says that the current inspector general's review looking into the early stages of the russia investigation will now expand to include whether there was surveillance on the trump campaign. meantime, today the president will focus on north korea and south korea. south korea's president is here for what will turn out to be a pretty brief visit to the white house, less than two hours to try to convince president trump to stay in this june 12th summit. there is concern, and the vice president talked than as well, that north korea could pull out. >> is this summit with north korea on june 12th going the happen? >> well, as the president often says, martha, we'll see.

i don't think president trump is thinking about public relations. he is thinking about peace. it would be a great mistake for kim jong-un to think he could play donald trump. >> reporter: straight pompeo who twice visited north korea says the u.s. is committed to diplomacy here. phillip? >> just about three weeks away from that proposed summit. tracie, thank you. we are getting a closer look at a shoot-out between police and a gunman at president trump's golf club in florida. a gunman stormed the lobby of the trump national doral early friday. you can hear the loud blaring of gunshots in the background. the suspect was wounded and taken into custody. after spending three days in the hospital, he appeared before a judge for the first time and was charged with nearly a dozen counts, and he remains behind bars. nbc's catie beck has details. >> reporter: the dramatic shoot-out between police and an intruder at the trump national doral hotel in miami. >> shots fired, shots fired!

>> reporter: a firefight captured on police body cam. fire alarms blaring as bullets fly, round after round. the damage visible all over the hotel's luxurious lobby as the video shows officers carefully climbing the stairs where suspected gunman, 42-year-old jonathan oddi was arrested. police say he scaled a fence at the hotel owned by the president, stole an american flag, and began screaming rhetoric against president trump and former president obama. suffering gunshot wounds to the leg, oddi survived and now faces multiple felonies, including first-degree attempted murder of a police officer. catie beck, nbc news. a moment of silence was held on the house floor monday in honor of the ten people killed in the santa fe high school mass shooting. but it turned dramatic after a person was heard yelling out in

protest right as the moment of silence was ending. >> mr. speaker, i yield back. >> with that objection, five-minute vote willing continue. >> do something! >> now initial reports claim it was a protest in the gallery shouting, but it turns out that person was in fact democratic congresswoman donny watson coleman from new jersey. she was calling for action in response to this latest school shooting. a three-hour car chase across southern california hit speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour. the hours long tri-county pursuit came to a bizarre in riverside county after the suspected car thief drove wreck lislie on highways and streets. at one point appearing to drive circles. where am i going to go, left or right. about two hours into the chase, the driver then abandoned the stolen toyota camry and tried to flee on foot along with his

female passenger. well, despite changing his shirt, officers arrested both the driver, christian beltran and the passenger, cecilia martinez. parts of the world are dealing with violent floods and raging water from intense storms. in turkey, fast-moving flash floods stranded dozens of cars and trucks, main roads submerged, even trapping a city bus. heavy monsoon rains claimed five lives in sri lanka. landslides and flooding there have forced evacuations. here at home rising rivers have dumped inches of rivers all over north carolina. it's responsible for highway closures and several water rescues. >> let's check with bill karins. good morning. >> good morning. not in the southeast there is a lot of moisture available. well pop the storms up overnight. now they're dying down. still some heavier rain down around key west, moving into south florida. but this is a moisture plume that continues to come up from the south there is a lot of humiditiment you're going to get the sunshine and the storms will build up this afternoon. and we're actually going to do this pattern right into the weekend. rainfall thursday.
