on assignment out west. >> extraordinary picture as harvey weinstein turns himself in to police to face sex crime charges. the first criminal case against the disgraced hollywood titan. >> of course this all erupted back in october and set off an earthquake in hollywood and then beyond. a reckoning over sexual misconduct. in all, nearly 100 women have come forward publicly leveling accusations against weinstein. we have complete coverage and will start at the courthouse with craig melvin. craig, good morning. mar vee wi harvey weinstein in court just a few moments ago. >> reporter: good morning to you. harvey weinstein expected to walk out of this courthouse any moment now. he has surrendered his passport. he will not be allowed to travel outside new york state or connecticut. we're also told that his attorney is going to be holding a news conference here any moment now. weinstein this morning facing a number of charges. the most serious, of course, being rape. what's curious about this rape charge, though, is that the

victim is not going to be known to the public. a judge issuing an order of protection. this was a woman that we had not previously known of. meanwhile, harvey weinstein now, there is some activity here outside the court house. weinstein not leaving just yet. a number of his accusers, though, not thinking that this would be a day that would ever come. this morning harvey weinstein turned himself in to new york city police. the former movie mogul now arrested, processed and charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women. the charges mark a dramatic culmination in a story that shook hollywood to its core and ignited the me too and time's up movements. >> time's up. >> time is up. >> reporter: the nypd and manhattan d.a. have been investigating weinstein for allegations of sexual abuse made

by lucia evans. >> we have several complaints actively being investigated. >> reporter: evans, a former aspiring actress, told "the new yorker" last year that weinstein forced her to perform a sex act on him in 2004 during a meeting in new york. i said over and over i don't want to do this. stop, don't, she told the magazine, adding i just sort of gave up. that's the most horrible part of it and that's why he's been able to do this for so long to so many women. people give up and then they feel like it's their fault. evans telling "the new yorker" on thursday police said that if i do nothing, harvey would walk. i think the significance hit all at once. de la jorta says weinstein raped her twice. >> the second time around was much more aggressive. i suffered somewhat of a breakdown that night. i disassociated because i was so afraid of him. >> reporter: this morning weinstein's accusers vindicated.

>> it's surreal, it's real, it's both. >> reporter: including rose mcgowan, who also accused weinstein of rape. speaking out this morning on "megyn kelly today." >> what would you say to him? if he were watching this today, what would you say to him? >> we got you. we got you. yeah. >> we've been waiting a long time for this. >> reporter: reporter lauren sivan said more than a decade ago weinstein exposed himself, told her to be quiet and masturbated in front of her in the kitchen of a new york restaurant. >> it shows what can be accomplished when a group of women get together and decide we're not going to let him get away with this. we're going to scream the truth. >> reporter: at least 95 women have publicly accused weinstein of sexual harassment, misconduct or rape. he has vehemently denied all

allegations of nonconsensual sex. police in los angeles and london have also been investigating weinstein, but no charges have been filed. federal prosecutors in new york have also launched an investigation. a flurry of activity outside the manhattan criminal courthouse because harvey weinstein's attorney, ben brathman, making a statement here. also going to be taking a few questions, we are told. meanwhile, harvey weinstein over the last two or three minutes managed to leave this courthouse through a different exit, but again weinstein putting up $1 million in cash, not being allowed to leave new york state or connecticut. that's the very latest from here, savannah, willie, we'll send it back to you. >> let's go right to nbc contributor megan tuey who won the pulitzer prize for breaking the story against harvey weinstein. megan, any color from the courtroom? it is such an extraordinary image to see harvey weinstein,

once so powerful, once so feared, a criminal defendant in handcuffs inside a courtroom. >> reporter: yeah, it was remarkable. i have to say as somebody who spent months interviewing women who say they were victimized by harvey, i saw so much fear in so many women's eyes for so many months. the fact that today in this courtroom we saw harvey weinstein with so much fear in his eyes, it was just a complete reversal. something i wasn't sure that we'd actually see happen. >> megan, we saw some of the reaction from rose mcgowan with megyn kelly just a few minutes ago, very powerful reaction. i assume you've been in touch with some of the women you've reported on, the women you worked with on your story. what are they feeling this morning? >> reporter: tremendous relief. i don't think you can comprehend how much fear these women continued to carry with them even after this global reckoning on sexual harassment and sexual assault even after harvey's company basically crumbled in

the face of these allegations. the big question was whether or not the criminal law would catch up with him. until it did, there was an alleged predator basically out there walking the streets. i think there were a lot of women who worried whether or not he was going to -- that he was going to continue to take action against them. the women who had spoken out against him. >> megan, we've put up a picture on our air several times this morning, 95 women and counting who have accused harvey weinstein and yet it sounds like from this criminal complaint this is an accuser whose identity remains secret and who has never told the story publicly before. is that your understanding? >> reporter: yeah, that was a big question going into the courtroom this morning is were we going to learn the identity of the second victim, the victim of the second rape that he's been charged with, and we didn't. instead the prosecutor asked for an order of protection to ensure that he wouldn't be able to contact her in any way. if he does, it will be a criminal violation. but we didn't learn -- they're going to keep her identity protected. >> the pictures are just unbelievable as we see them

coming in now. megan, thanks so much, we appreciate your time. also with us here in studio, megyn kelly. we just mentioned your interview just a few minutes ago with rose mcgowan. what was it like to sit across from her as that news came in? >> i didn't expect it to be so emotional for me frankly, just sitting across from this woman who is one of the four mothers of this movement. at great risk to herself, found it within her to speak up pu puck -- publicly about what happened. she had done it repeatedly but the difference was she got people to finally listen. and to see her watch him in handcuffs have her moment was really something. to me this is a triumphant day, and that is not to deprive harvey weinstein of his day in court and his chance to prove his potential innocence. he'll be given that opportunity. but it's triumphant for womenkind to see him put to the test. they're going to get their day in court, his accusers. they'll be able to stand up and

say he did this to me and the justice system will listen. will listen as they never have before. think about the amount of pressure it took to get cy vance to file these charges. he was slow rolling this for a long time and women like rose and others stayed on it. the woman we don't know her identity, hats off to her an to all the young women who have chosen to stay anonymous and found the guts to come forward and say me too, i salute them all. >> and women who are going to participate in a criminal process now which can be incredibly rigorous for them as well. >> but also empowering. >> megyn, thank you very much. also breaking this morning, police near indianapolis are on the scene of a school shooting. nbc's pete williams is with us right now. pete, what more can you tell us? >> well, this is developing right now. the information is just coming in, but indiana state police say it appears two people were injured in a school shooting a short time ago. this is at noblesville west middle school in noblesville, indiana.

that's about 30 miles north-northeast of indianapolis. the word went out this morning of an active shooter and the school was immediately put in lockdown. the police there say the person with the gun was arrested at about 9:20 local time. we don't yet know who was injured or how serious the injuries are. police say the injured were taken to a nearby hospital. parents have been told to go to the high school in noblesville and to wait there to pick up their children. the school year is almost over. it ends on june 1st. willie. >> a middle school. a middle school. pete williams, we'll stay on this story along with you. thanks so much. police are searching for two suspects in a restaurant bombing in suburban toronto that sent 15 people to the hospital, three critically injured. surveillance cameras recorded two men walking into this popular indian restaurant. one carried an object believed to be a homemade bomb. the men set off their device and ran away. officials tell us there's no indication this was a hate crime or act of terrorism but it comes

one month after a driver plowed a van into a lunchtime crowd in downtown toronto and killed ten people. no motive has been established in that incident. also this morning both north korea and president trump are speaking out about the president's decision to suddenly cancel what would have been an historic talk with kim jong-un. so can that summit be saved? we'll talk about that with senator lindsey graham in just a moment. but first, nbc's peter alexander is at the white house for us. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, willie, good morning to you. i was just on the south lawn where the president addressed this just moments ago. president trump saying the june 12th summit with north korea could still happen, insisting the u.s. is talking to north korea right now, which if it's true would be significant because his aides just yesterday said there had been radio silence from north korea. he asked if north korea is playing games and the president said everybody plays games. >> i have decided to terminate the planned summit in singapore. >> reporter: the president this morning speaking out, hinting the summit may be back on. >> no, no, we'll see what

happens. it could even be the 12th. we're talking to them now. they very much want to do it. we'd like to do it. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: it comes after north korea responded overnight, calling president trump's abrupt announcement a surprise and totally regrettable, saying it remains ready to meet with the u.s. at any time, adding chairman kim jong-un had focused every effort on his meeting with president trump. >> i believe that this is a tremendous setback for north korea and indeed a setback for the world. >> reporter: so what prompted the president's decision? multiple u.s. officials tell nbc news president trump fearing the north koreans might beat him to the punch wanted to be the one to cancel first. after hours of discussions with senior advisers wednesday night, an ang decryreed to walk away thursday morning. personally dictating that extraordinary letter to his excellency, kim jong-un, accusing him of tremendous anger and hostility, later leaving open the door to diplomacy,

directing the dictator please do not hesitate to call me or write. >> if and when kim jong-un chooses to engage in constructive dialogue and actions, i am waiting. >> reporter: the decision stunning congressional leaders and key allies, like south korea. its president convening an emergency midnight meeting. the breakdown the result of rising tensions between the nuclear powers. north korea ripping into vice president pence for remarks it called stupid and ignorant after pence appeared to warn kim jong-un of regime change if the north doesn't denuclearize. the final straw, aides say, the north koreans publicly threatening a nuclear showdown. just hours before the regime claimed it demolished a nuclear test site. secretary of state mike pompeo detailing how north korea recently went dark as the u.s. called to coordinate. >> we got a lot of dial tones. >> reporter: the president now forced to dial back expectations after indulging praise from his fiercest supporters that he

deserves the nobel peace prize. >> nobel. i just want to get the job done. >> reporter: still, after months of maneuvering, that chance at peace appears much further off today. the president right now, we should tell you, about to address the graduating class of the naval academy and then later today back here at the white house he will sit down with his secretary of state, mike pompeo. vannah and willie, back to you. >> thank you so much. republican senator lindsey graham is with us now. senator, good morning. always good to see you. >> thank you. >> so is this a situation where if i break up with you, you can't break up with me? is that how we should be viewing what happened with the summit getting cancelled? >> it could be the worst divorce in the history of the world or we could all get back together. i talked to the president yesterday and he said he thought they were playing him. he thinks china is pulling back north korea. about a month into his presidency, i met with him about north korea and he asked me what i thought. i said you need to stop this program or they'll eventually

sell whatever they build, it's just too dangerous. so he made a decision that he's going to ending the nuclear program. the only question is how and when. the referred route is through peace, a peace treaty, a win-win for them and us. in terms of when, he wants it to be in his first term. but if diplomacy fails, then military action is the only thing left and it would be the utter destruction of the north korean regime, which would come at a high price. >> senator, the foreign minister of north korea said we're not giving up our nuclear program. denuclearization is off the table, which is the entire objective from where you're sitting and the president is sitting. so if that's true and they won't agree to give up their nukes, where does that leave you? >> military objective. >> is that where we are now? >> that's where we're headed. if that statement holds true, and i don't believe it. i believe they believe trump will use military force. for 30 years they have played us. they understand our election cycle. they're trying to run out the clock. they understand 2019 is the year before a presidential election.

they think trump is just like everybody else. he's not. >> this is like doomsday talk here. do you think we're closer to a war with north korea? >> if he's right, the north koreans say we'll never give up our nuclear program and our president says it's too dangerous for you to have it, we're not going to have our homeland threatened, maximum pressure has worked so far. if the world backs off on maximum pressure, you put trump in a box. it's going to end one way or another. if military action is required, they're going to lose. it will be devastating to the region. if there's a war, it's going to be in china's backyard. i can't stress enough to you how much i've talked to him. it's not if it ends, it's how it ends. when does it end? i think it's going to happen in his first term. the best way for it to ending is a peace treaty with the north koreans, south koreans, the chinese and us. >> but it makes it sound easy, like you're going to drop a bomb

on north korea and that's that. >> it's the end of them. >> so vice president pence and john bolton both said that the libya example is what north korea should think about, which as we know moammar gadhafi gave up his nukes and eight years later he was shot dead in a drainpipe by militia members of his own country. was that a mistake to put that out? >> the libyan example is that the people turn on you as a dictator and nato came in to help the people. there is no circumstance i see where the west comes in on behalf of the north korean people. if there's an uprising against kim jong-un, china will handle it. how does this end peacefully? a peace treaty where they give up their nukes, we guarantee the regime's safety. we're not trying to reunify the peninsula, we're not trying to bring democracy to north korea. we want to edged their nuclear program. south korea and japan don't have nuclear weapons. we're trying to get everybody in the same spot. let me just say this.

jest about when i first met her. it was more than 20 years ago. how is that news? >> as for freeman, just this week, vancouver's public transit system would be voiced by him that riders hear. >> just ahead, we'll have more on harvey weinstein, who, as we just told you, charged this morning and walked into the first precinct of the new york police department. we'll switch gears. the weather is an important one this morning as we wait for memorial day weekend. hey, dylan. >> it certainly is. we're watching a tropical system. here it is off of the yucatan peninsula of mexico. we don't mow where the storm is going to track. it should move into the eastern or central gulf of mexico. there's a 92% chance of this developing into a tropical system as it moves into the

development zone, where the waters are very warm and is conducive for development. that's something we'll keep an eye on. either way, whether this becomes a named tropical storm or not, we're going to see moisture work into florida and along the gulf coast, especially as we go into saturday, heavy rain surges from the south. as we go to sunday and monday, that's when we start to see torrential downpours, the possibility of flooding and dangerous rip currents. both sides of florida have the chance of seeing some rip currents going into this weekend. the eastern coast of florida is not in the clear. but it's especially along the coast of mississippi, alabama, over into the western panhandle of florida where the water will get more and myrrh dangore dang. we could see six inches of rain good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall.

of the kids to graduate from northern high school this week. three of their siblings also grabbed their diplomas. what's next for the quads? they're all planning to join the military. rose in the air force, bryce, the navy, mason, the air national guard. and one quad couldn't wait. brother, nevin, is already a marine. and a fifth child is joining the marine ranks, as well. they credit their brother-in-law, matt, an airman, for helping them to choose donning the nunn form. and they're with us here in the studio. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> rose, you just graduated a few years ago, right? >> i did, yeah. >> who is the ring leader here? who said, let's sign up? >> it was me. >> she rolls her eyes. okay. why? what made you want to do that? >> well, i never -- junior year, the whole college thing, four to eight years, it never really

caught my attention. and during the summer, i had marine and navy recruiters contacting me. and that just really interested me. >> and what branch are you going to be? >> the navy. >> rose, as we go down the line. air force, air national guard, navy, united states marine corps. how did you decide, rose, who was going into which branch of the military? >> personally, i was going to go into the navy. but i started looking into the air force and they have jobs that are more suitable for my profession that i would like in the future. i think that's what happened to all of us. we chose it, due to the job we wanted. >> how about you, mason? >> it's more career-based for me, personally. college is not going to be the route. >> i'm sensing a theme here. >> you're going to be in the marines. your brother's in the marines already. are you getting the scoop from him? >> yeah. first, i was actually looking into the navy, as well. and i guess, i would say, kind of nevin pushed me towards it.

he had me talk to the marine recruiters when he was about to go off to boot camp. and after talking to them, i don't know. i just felt like that suited me more. i don't know. like, the brotherhood with the marines are more about. >> are you nervous? excited? >> a little bit of both. more excited, i guess. >> rose, with quads, you have been together for almost every waking moment of your entire lives. all of your 18 years. what's it going to be like to break up the band here? >> we've been close-knit. i think it will be good for us. i'm personally a little sad. i don't know abouty boib s bo? >> we have nevin on the phone. he's at camp lejeune. he is in training. you beat your brothers and sisters to the punch. >> i did decide to beat them to

keep in touch with us. stick around, we havei )m . our breaking news: 8:26. good morning, everyone. our breaking news this morn, a live look at eastbound interstate 80 near the bridge in crockett. a fiery big-rig crash is still slowing traffic and closing lanes that are now two lanes open. you can see them on left-hand side of your screen. this crash happened about 1:30 this morning. authorities say a truck carrying canned pineapples crashed and caught fire. a good samaritan pulled the driver from the burning truck. that truck driver was airlifted to a hospital. now, there was a second accident nearby, in that case, the driver of a car died after rear ending a big rig that was caught up in the backup. mike inouye has been monitoring this throughout the rough commute. >> this is a tough one we're talking about. you showed the crash still being cleaned up. half of east 80 is closed but
