it is going to be a little slower to clear. right now in san jose, looks at that cloud cover out there. it's definitely overcast. wind speeds at about 6 miles per hour. it's a lot windier in the city. i want to show you the doppler radar. you can see the system off to the east. that's what brought showers yesterday to the area. within the past hour or so it has cleared out quite nicely. all those lingering showers are making their exit and that's going to pave the way for a very beautiful weekend. today's temperatures are expected to be seasonable. if you're heading out on an early morning jog, that's fantastic, nice way to stop your weekend. if you notice by about 10 a.m., we start to notice sunshine peeking through and i'll break down your sunday warmup. >> good for that jogger there. thanks. >> we begin with a story right now that was breaking during our

11 p.m. newscast last night, a fire that broke out near the oakland coliseum on a very busy night. the oakland as had a fireworks show after their game at the coliseum. it's not clear if that somehow contributed to this fire. paul simon was performing next door at the oracle arena so many fans were delayed from leaving the parking lot. >> beginning today there will be a new mass transthe option. bart has finally extended beyond the. persian gulf station. the trains run on a separate rail line so commuters will have to switch over from bart. regular service starts this morning.

hour. gusty along the coast. san jose wind about 6 miles per hour, 55 for san jose. doppler radar, i want to show you where that rain went. we have the system that brought rain to the south bay. overall today's daytime temperatures will be very seasonable. so we had those early morning showers and then we're expecting some partly sunny skies as we headed toward the afternoon. so the clouds will be slow to clear, daytime highs in san jose, about 70 degrees. along the coast and in the city, we're talking upper 50s, lower 60s out there. i've gotten plenty of questions about memorial day weekend. we've got the carnival mission district today. it will be on the breezier side. check out sunday, the big parade. we're expecting to warm up.

our biggest warmup will come with a ridge of high pressure. perfect for memorial day, very nice, upper 60s for san francisco. if you're heading out to napa, similar conditions. last night we had a couple of those showers. we are expected to clear out and we will be climbing into some 80s warming up into sunday and eventually as we head in towards the concord area, we'll see some of the warmest temperatures. we're seeing 90s. that is not a mistake. today we'll be topping out into the mid 70s. as we headed toward sunday. then our warmest day will come on monday. over the next seven days, a look what the you can expect. our big warmup will start to take place tomorrow. monday that's when we'll see the biggest change due to favorable wind and high pressure. the high pressure sticks around and keeps us nice and dry through tuesday. as we head in towards tuesday

and a type of fishing gear is to blame. other states have banned or >> marine animals strangled and killed on the california coast by the thousands and one type of fishing gear is to blame. other states have banned or restricted the use of these nets but they're still allowed off of california shores. but there are also fishermen who fear they could lose their jobs. we want to warn you, some of the video you're about to see may be disturbing. bigad shaban has the story. >> reporter: these massive nets are mainly used to catch swordfish but they snag and kill a lot more. now federal lawmakers are taking action to do away with the gear that's been entangled in controversy. marine life now lifeless, caught and killed in mile long fishing

nets off the california coast. we obtained and analyzed nearly three decades of federal inspection records and discovered 87,000 sharks were killed in nets over the last 28 years, 4,000 dolphins, 1,200 sea lions, 456 whales, which includes endangered species and 136 sea turtles, which are all protected. this man shot over 100 hours of video off the california coast. he managed to get permission from crews to be on board. they didn't know he's an undercover cameraman working for animal rights. >> dolphins and sea lions have to get up for air. they were struggling as hard as they could. they just constricted themselves in the net and died. when they came up, wound up in

the net, the crew would cut them to pieces to get them out. >> so they were so tangled, the only way to get them out was by cutting off their fins? >> correct. >> the video is being release by advocacy groups, including mercy for animals, sealegacy, turtle island, all in an effort to get them banned. what was it like being on board? >> it was bizarre. the crews and captains were so calm in telling me how many dead sea animals would come up in their nets. >> reporter: the nets were left out overnight. they can stretch up to a mile long, roughly 6,000 feet. the nets are typically about 100 feet tall. fisherman gary burke has been using drift nets off the california coast since the

practice started in the 70s. we first met him two years ago in southern california, but we recently caught up with him at the state capital where he's been lobbying lawmakers to vote against new legislation to phase out the nets. they would buy back nets and raise the annual fee from 300 to 3,000 over the next two years. what would be the effect of this? >> everyone would lose their livelihood. we'll force to you do things that will cost you so much, can't afford to go fishing. >> reporter: environmental groups want fishermen to use buoys so they can better target swordfish and avoid marine mammals that perform the.

>> why not make a switch? >> they don't produce. >> so if they were, you would be making lots of profits? >> in one week they caught what your guys caught in five or six months. >> five or six months? >> yes. >> holes in the netting are now larger. >> these will emit a constant sound? >> a beep, beep, beep, beep. >> reporter: since the government started requiring those pingers in the 90s, the number of tangled marine animals has declined. but 15 whales were entangled and killed. half the sharks pulled aboard last year weren't the right catch. they were tossed back, most of them dead. >> it's extraordinarily damaging, deadly, inhumane gear.

>> reporter: senator ben allen of santa monica authored that new legislation. but if some fishermen are pushed out of the industry because of this, is that a price california is willing to pay? >> yeah. we have to move toward better practices. the damage caused by this equipment is so high that if there are a couple of people who lose their jobs, you know, i think that is a cost worth paying. >> reporter: back in 1990, 141 fishermen used drift nets. today only about 20. >> how much are we going to allow this really small group of fishermen with this one particular type of gear to cause this amount of damage off of our coast when there are other alternatives. you can still get good fish on to people's plates but do so in
