hopefuls every four years. >> california used the top two primary elections for the partisan offices. it is very different from the way most states nominate their candidates. >> that's right. let's go through this. in fact, washington state is the only other state that has a top two primary state. here's how it works, for any partisan state or congressional race, the two candidates, the two candidates to face each other in november, they may be different political parties, the same political party or in rare cases, one of the candidates may not belong to a political party. that's different from the past when the candidates from each political party, including minor parties, would be nominated for the november ballot. now, it is only the top two this time. it's all we've got, just the top two no matter what. >> i looked at my ballot and vote by mail. who seems to actually have a chance?
7:48 am
>> they are going to know somebody on the ballot there are so many. there are 27. 27 candidates filed papers to run for the governor's office. it's crazy. and most polls, however, show only three or four with the possibility of reaching the top two. democrat gavin newsom, san francisco, is going to be at the top of the polls for a quarter of the camps. but this seems to be between the mayor and five others. now, what makes this particularly interesting this time around is that many of the polls are using online polling, which is a real departure from the past when they reached out via telephone. we just don't know their accuracy. so there's a lot of polling
7:49 am
versusne polling in the presidential polling that makes a difference. so talk about how this makes a difference potentialfully in regards to the governor's race. >> there are a couple possibilities. if democrat newsome runs and john koch is the favorite. then newsom could have an edge over the republicans. that will be a lot more likely to come out to vote for republican candidates in the downstate office, down ballot offices. but here's another scenario to show you how things change-up. if newsom and another democrat emerge as the top two democrats, get ready for a blood bath. meantime, republicans and independents are stuck with choosing just the two democrats. there are endless other possibilities, but the fact is that the top two could leave us
7:50 am
with interesting combinations in november that we never would have anticipated. >> voting is always so important. they are expecting it in santa clara a 35% turnout rate, which is not very high, but talk about why this is so important then? what is the state of the june 5th voter? >> well, this system, among other things, say it is so critical for the june 5th vote. it's critical for determining the kinds of candidates that the voters will face in november, especially if there are just two now. if you don't vote in june, a candidate with your philosophy could be missing from the ballot in november altogether. >> larry, as always, we'll be watching closely. nine days away. thank you for the very important insight ahead of this election. stay with us. still ahead on "today in the bay," dollars for denim. someone put down serious money to own this pair of jeans made in san francisco. it's not so much how they were made but when they were made to bring in the big bucks. we'll tell you all about it. and mostly clear skies over san francisco, but we do have a couple hanging out low clouds out there.

door. san jose, 55. might be a little cool for now, but we'll start to see an increase in the temperatures and also we might still see some breezy conditions. we are starting to get a ridge of high pressure that is really going to push a lot of the flow away. and those winds are going to help us warm the temperatures into the 60s. and the 70s for the coast in the bay. and the valleys, we're talking 80s and possibly near 90 heading into tomorrow. and this is the reason why. we're looking at the long-range outlook to get the ridge of high pressure to dominate into today, monday and part of your tuesday. now, as we look at the timeline looking ahead to tuesday and wednesday. we begin to see a little bit of a system to cool us back down to more seasonable temperatures. and it is also going to kick up light breezes and morning low clouds along with the possibility of seeing drizzle as we head in towards the middle of the week. and if you're planning to head to the sierra, we might even see some rain, some thunderstorm action out there during the middle of the week. but we'll talk about the daytime

climbing into the mid-80s. now, if you're heading out to cavnaval, it starts at 9:00 a.m. with the low clouds burning off nicely to make way for some sunshine. and look at the temps. by 2:00, 69. eventually possibly topping out at the 70-degree mark. now over the next seven days, we keep the warming up trend into monday and tuesday. this is where we start to see a decline or i should say a nice descend in temperatures heading out to the workweek. 84 degrees for tomorrow. by memorial day, this is going to be the hottest day of the week. this is where we are tracking the 90s on the map. and into tuesday and wednesday, we'll start to notice a shift in the pattern. we'll go from 90s to 80s, back down to 70s and then the low 70s to the middle of the week because of an approaching system. but this ridge of high pressure is really what is going to kind of remain the main event for this weekend. really great weather heading into today and into monday, too. >> we're liking it. thank you. everyone is done with the

may gray, right? i am. okay, you're going to like these jeans. they are a little faded, but that's exactly what makes the jeans so valuable. you're looking at cotton jeans made by levi strausse back in 1893. they just sold at an auction in may for nearly $100,000. the new owner lives in southeast asia. the jeans were only worn a few times but are in mint condition for being 125 years old. what is more remarkable is just two years ago the jeans failed to sew it off. does that say 44 waist? >> it's the person whothem, the will probably do it just for that. we'll have more local news tonight at 4:30, 6:00 and 11:00. check in with us all day long on nbcbayarea.com. have a great rest of your day. i'm dianne feinstein and i approve this message.
