lots of memorial day activities happening across the bay area today as well. good morning, everyone. >> kari hall, you are working double duty in case there's a little traffic here as well. >> so far things are looking pretty good. kind of expected on memorial day. people still have to work and get out the door. we start out this morning with all clear skies for much of the bay area. here's a live look outside in san jose. let's go to evergreen. i know you're already starting to make plans. normal high pressure this time of year. 76 degrees. as you can see, we're going way above that up to 88 by 2:00 this afternoon. eventually hitting the low 90s. while san francisco today will reach into the mid-70s. as we get a look at our traffic map, once again things are looking fairly quiet out there. no major issues, but we'll be

tracking a few of those crashes. but so far not causing problems. >> new this morning, morgan hill police are investigating a large fight that led to two people being stabbed. it happened a little before 11:00 last night in the heart of morgan hill about a block from the cal train station on west second street. right now police are not revealing details about who was stabbed or how serious their injuries are. also police are not telling us at this point whether officers made any arrests but we'll keep following up. also new this morning, we're learning crime rate ace cross santa clara county are climbing. we're seeing a spike in youth crime. >> reporter: correct. good morning. the santa clary county attorney's office released a report that notes crime is generally low given the size of

this county. there has been an increase recently in the number of violent crimes. that in part as you mention due to juveniles. more than half of whom are repeat offenders. according to the district attorney's office, we're talking about juvenile crimes up 20% from the past year. car burglaries up 51%. assaults up by 59%. home burglaries 129%. carjackings 250%. one reason why juvenile crime saw such a jump is because of a group of kids called the lash money gang who were behind a number of robberies. san jose police recently cracked down on the group with two rounds of arrests dwreearlier t year. the police department has hired more police last year after losing so many due to layoffs and retirements, the department is still super lean. for example, new york city has

41 officers per 10,000 residents. san francisco almost 26. oakland 17. san jose police department behind me, only nine officers per 10,000 people. bob riddell, today in the bay. >> thank you. to developing news out of washington. looks like that canceled summit with north korea might happen after all. as we speak, a u.s. team is overseas trying to make it happen. today in the bay's tracie potts is live with what could happen. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. what could happen next is the summit that the president canceled, the u.s. is working on it. north korea and south korea, china even dipping in trying to get this canceled summit rescheduled. it happened here at the dmz, the buffer zone between north and south korea. a u.s. negotiating team led by a veteran ambassador met with the north koreans sunday to talk

strategy while a white house team headed to singapore to handle logistics. president trump tweets, kim jong-un agrees with me on this, it will happen. >> it's a show. >> these folks are not going to get rid of all their nuclear weapons. >> this is typical north korea. two steps forward, one step back. >> act like you want to negotiate then come out with some outlandish view of what that negotiation means. >> reporter: south korean president moon jae-in met with the north korean leader saturday claiming that north korea is ready to give up its nuclear weapons. but china reportedly wants in. >> if we don't have china putting maximum pressure on north korea, i don't think this summit will succeed. >> they don't want trump and kim talking about peace without the chinese at the table. >> reporter: it's all still up in the air with the clock ticking. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. new witness accounts are providing a clearer picture of the small plane crash that killed two people in petaluma.

this happened yesterday afternoon just after that plane took off from the petaluma airport. debris ended up covering nearby east washington road as well. two men who work at a golf course nearby say the plane started making strange noises as soon as it lifted up into the air. >> it was, like, choppy. the motor was kind of choppy and not fully running. >> we saw it as it was going up in the air. we noticed it was sputtering quite a bit. and it was quickly falling. >> authorities say a man and a woman died in that crash. we now know it was a homemade plane registered to a richard bristow of carmichael, california. officials have not identified those victims. fire season definitely underway. firefighters busy every night. last night crews rushed to keep this fire away from homes in san jose. the grass fire broke out in south san jose about 5:00 last night. smoke behind those homes. burned 16 acres the outskirts of

the park in the santa tarisa county, fire as well. a preschool in newark, firefighters releasing these photos. happened saturday at safari kid preschool at 1:30 in the afternoon. the firefighters on the scene said they smelled gasoline. the flames were put out quickly by firefighters. it is 5:06 now. you may notice more surveillance at the railroad crossing soon. it's to stop people from walking on the tracks. the city will launch its video monitoring system at four train crossings in june. an effort to swap out human guards who are working those tracks. instead operators will control cameras from a remote site. then they can talk with people who might be near those tracks. happening today, america remembers u.s. military member

at 84 degrees there. as we get ready for one of the hotter days of the year. we'll look ahead to what else is in the forecast as you go back to work possibly tomorrow. that's conext. >> thanks. 5:13 now. another scare in the air to tell you about. a san diego flight bound for tulsa diverted to phoenix because of a bizarre odor. that odor quickly came through the plane and then dissipated. 17 passengers asked to be evaluated. the cause of that odor is still under investigation. good news for tesla model 3 owners, or those waiting to get their hands on one. elon musk says they are delivering an update to improve the braking time. the model 3's brakes were such a concern for consumer reports, reviewers there decided not to

give it a recommendation. the indiana teacher who thwarted a gunman on friday will make his first remarks today. the shootipeed at noblesville west middle school in indiana. we brought you this as breaking news on friday morning. police say a student entered a classroom with two guns and started firing. the teacher jason seaman swatted that gun out of the student's hand and then tackled that student to the ground. seaman was shot three times in the process. this weekend he was able to go home from the hospital. president trump sent him a tweet thanking him for his heroic actions. a gofundme page in his honor also surpassed $55,000. former president george h.w. bush recovering in the hospital this morning. on saturday he attended a breakfast in maine to honor veterans. less than a day later, a family spokesperson tweeted the former president is in the hospital for low blood pressure and discomfort. he is reportedly alert, not experiencing any discomfort any

longer. mr. bush expected to remain in the hospital for observation for a couple of days. at 93 years old, he is the oldest living u.s. president. u.s. supreme court is heading into the final stretch of its term. that means decisions on several high-profile cases are expected soon. the court has yet to rule on a case about chra christian bakero refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. and the fight over president trump's travel ban is expected to be resolved as well. also the justices are expected to rule on whether republican lawmakers in texas drew district lines to weaken the voting power of minority groups. this could impact the political makeup of congress and state legislatures nationwide. decisions have to come out by the end of june. quarter past 5:00, it's graduation season. it's also the beginning of the job search for college grads. we do have some advice for anyone looking far job. connect with the 20 most influential people you know in

my kids do that to each other all the time. they did wear safety belts the whole time. i thought he was just relaxing in the hammock. >> not until it widens out, you see how deep that was. let's get to the weather. it's a hot one. it is hot in the studio. >> it is warm in here. you may already have to start cranking up the air conditioning to get ready for today. it's going to heat up fast. looks good with some temperatures in the 50s and 60s. live look outside in palo alto and looking at our clear start to the day. our temperatures go from 58 degrees at 7:00 to 68 degrees by 10:00. and then after that you'll probably close the windows and start getting that air conditioning ready as we go into the afternoon. seven-day forecast is on the screen as we talk about what to expect. the coast will be to the 60s and 80s. while the valleys will go to the 90s. also an increase of the fire danger today. then it turns breezy as we head

into tomorrow. and slightly cooler as well. as we look at where we're headed today and compare that to average in napa, it's going to be about 15 degrees above average in san francisco. that 75-degree high will be about 10 degrees above normal. also for the parts of the east bay and concord, it's going to be up to 91 today which is about 13 degrees above average. i don't think we'll set a lot of records around the bay area, but definitely a big difference from yesterday as we head up to 89 degrees today in morgan hill. cupertino will top out at 87 today. half-moon bay will keep a cool 65. palo alto up to 85 degrees. in san francisco, noticing it will be warmer today but still breezy with those winds kicking up at 15 to 20 miles per hour. the embarcadero today, up to 89

degrees. if you're planning to go to santa cruz, we will see those low 70s for the immediate coastline. it'll be in the upper 70s but still pretty warm today. and mostly sunny skies. and then as we get a look at our seven-day forecast, for today the hottest day here and then we'll come down a few degrees tomorrow. and then much cooler on wednesday as we get a stronger on-shore flow. on thursday it looks comfortable. 70 degrees. then it does gradually warm up heading into the weekend. 75 in san francisco today with some upper 60s tomorrow. and the rest of the week will be in the low to mid-60s. even into the weekend. as we get a look at our traffic maps this morning, we are going to see pretty smooth flow of traffic around the bay area. as you get ready to head out. the only issues we've had this morning across the san mateo

should be a good game. the a's are on fire. they beat the diamondbacks yesterday 2-1. meantime, the giants are away. they'll go against the rockies. been a rough run for the boys in orange and black. last night they lost to the cubs 8-3. tomorrow star tennis player serena williams will be back at it for the first time since she had her little baby. she is expected to play in her first major match since giving birth to her daughter in september. the french open kicked off last week. she was number one when she left the tour to give birth. williams, though, now ranked number 453. talk about a penalty for having a baby. she risks facing highly ranked players in the earlier rounds instead of the later rounds. maybe they're more afraid though. williams is a three-time french open champion. last winning the paris major back in 2015. that seems rude, right? >> it does a bit. 453. i'm sure she'll climb the ladder quickly.

with their teenagers. as we enter what aaa is calling the hundred deadliest days on the road with these summer months approach whag we're doing right now with students through their summer break. as far as the time period, it lasts through memorial day through labor day. it's a combination -- now, according to aaa, they're saying teen crashes climb about 15% compared to the rest of the year during this time period. and the three factors that commonly lead to some of these dead lly accidents are speeding buckling up, and distraction. aaa reports six out of ten teen crashes are due to distraction. killed in a crash when not wearing seat belts and 30% of deadly teen crashes involve speeding. now, one of the most important things they want to remind parents to do is set an example wearing your seat belt, staying off your phone.

even a parent/teen agreement to set family rules for teen drivers. aaa encourages parents to have these conversations with their teens so everyone can have a safe summer on the road. >> all right, pete. thank you. it's already been a dangerous memorial day weekend not just for teenagers but for everyone. officers out in full force through the end of the day. they are watching for distracted drivers, people who are not wearing seat belts, and of course they're watching for drivers who might be under the influence. several people already are under arrest. this person was arrested for impaired driving. he rolled his car near the golden gate bridge. the officer explains how unsafe that driver was being. >> there were five passengers in that vehicle ranging from 16 to 21 years old. and even one of the passengers was sitting on the lap of another passenger as they were driving. >> again, that car rolled. this is another possible dui

crash. it happened in san jose early saturday morning. police say the driver of this mustang drove off 880 and crashed starting a fire. thankfully two people were pulled out -- two people pulled the driver out. >> i checked if there was any person inside the car. >> those two men who rescued that driver say that the driver told them he was drunk at the time. 5:34. a crackdown on side shows in the east bay. oakland police tweeting out these pictures. officers from the department's side show unit are out on the streets this memorial day weekend. they've towed a few cars including these black and red mustangs. ill lead side shows have been a problem for oakland and other bay area cities. debate giving the police commission more authority and independence. brooklyn was the first city in the bay area to create the board. over time other cities watch dog groups have assumed more control

with less oversight. berkeley leaders may decide to add a reform measure to the november ballot. a fight breaks out at delores park in san francisco. investigators say a man was stabbed just after 7:00 last night. the victim taken to the hospital. he's going to be okay. several people have been detained but nobody's under arrest. now, safety's been an issue at the park. last year sfpd increased foot patrols after several violent crimes. it is 5:35 now and many people are rooting for a german shepherd puppy found. it was rescued with another puppy from an oakland homeless encampment friday night. they were buried in garbage. the male pup is missing a paw altogether. he is expected to be okay. and already has someone interested in adopting him. but his sister's jaw is broken in several places and it's infected. >> we don't know if it was an active case of abuse, an intentional abuse, or just

terrible neglect. we don't know. she might not be able to survive and we're going to fight really hard for her. >> a local veterinarian surgeon is offering to repair the dog's mangled jaw but also admits that the pup may not survive. the antioch water park will celebrate all active and retired service members today by letting them in for free. and this past weekend, another east bay water park opened its doors after this accident last year. this is video from the wave in dublin. a little boy flying off the popular water slide. the slide's back open, the boy's okay. park officials spent about a year adjusting water pressure and levels. sop far no problems. meanwhile, the streets of san francisco's mission district are more alive than usual this weekend. for the 40th year, carnival's parade took over. dancers in traditional costumes moved to the beat along the

parade route. >> beautiful day out here in the mission district celebrating latino culture and seeing all the beautiful costumes. >> the event is billed as the largest multicultural celebration on the coast. >> it looks fun. >> it did look fun. bet the weather was perfect too. it was a little sunny. i saw a couple pictures of sunburn too. >> you have to watch out for that. >> yeah. it's still the weekend, right? we're going to look at what's happening today. it's going to be hot. and of course the big story will be the inland areas. and it feels like summer out there with our highs today heading up to 91 degrees. napa 90. 90 in santa rosa. 85 in palo alto.

san jose will reach up to 81 degrees. saturday up to 64 degrees. 72 for the bay. and 78 for the inland areas. we'll be in for some cooler weather, but it duss come up a couple of degrees for the interior valleys. coast up to 66 degrees. if you're heading to napa valley this weekend, keep in mind it's going to be another warm one. a lot of sunshine and highs reaching into the upper 80s. if you're going to squaw valley, looks beautiful. and our temperatures will be quite warm there. in the upper 60s all throughout the weekend. let's see what's happening as you head out the door this morning on the roads. now, we are tracking a couple of minor issues. but you can see that as we get that wide view of the traffic maps, that things are flowing smoothly as you get ready to head out the door. we've had a couple of issues on highway 4. a couple of crashes there. but so far things are looking

that's coming up in less than five minutes. houston firefighters not getting the day off. take a look at this. this is massive. houston, texas. alarms in st you can see that smoke. we continue to monitor this. but just a staggering amount of smoke and flame as our photographer pans out there. and just a huge cloud of smoke in the houston, texas, area. >> that is bad smoke. happening now on the gulf coast this morning, punishing rains and strong winds threatening to bring tornadoes and rip currents to the region. alberto, the first named storm of the season is expected to make landfall any moment now. it is expected to hit florida's panhandle before moving inland. the storm is expected to dump between 6 and 12 inches of rain across parts of florida, alabama, and mississippi. and this morning people in that area are preparing for the worst. >> well, i am filling up

sandbags to hopefully keep the rain water from coming in my front door. i'm actually terrified of the amount of rain that is predicted to come in. >> well, already states of emergency are being declared in florida and mississippi. and this is some hard video to watch in maryland. a house getting washed away in a flash flood. you can see here -- you can actually hear the screams of people who are watching it unfold. this happened yesterday about 20 miles outside baltimore. the nbc station there is reporting about three dozen rescu rescues. one person is still missing. 5:44. new developments on the volcano erupting in hawaii. lava covers 2400 acres on the big island. hawaii national guard soldiers teaming up with active duty ole j

-- soldiers to get a better look at the damage. a new fissure opened up but is not currently threatening more homes. kathy and gene morgan from san joaquin county spent their life savings hoping to leave in the estates, and now lava creeping closer to their big island home. after nervously waiting on the island for weeks, they decided to travel to the volcano to see what was going on. >> we have already bought our gas masks. we'll wear those the whole time in the neighborhood. we don't have lava insurance. most people don't. so we would lose everything. >> lava has destroyed at least 82 structures. the tracks have been closed for a number of maintenance projects and people have been taking buses to get between those two stations. meantime, it is a busy opening weekend for b.a.r.t.'s new

service between pittsburgh and antioch. more riders expected today because it's memorial day. it is a new ten-mile line which goes to pittsburgh center and antioch. service began on saturday. and a warning for drivers in one east bay city. if you're visiting fremont, pay attention to those parking signs or you could get a ticket. extra parking enforcement for the next two weeks. officers are on the lookout for people parked in front of fire hydrants and no stopping zones. they did ask us to tell you about that because they'd rather not give a ticket. those run $60 a piece. sonoma state university opens its new wine learning center tomorrow. this is renderings from when the $11 million facility was first announced. the new wine spectator learning center will be the center piece for the wine business institute. anybody looking for a career in wine making, sonoma state is trying to make that program into

an ideal one. closer to the bay area, you can try garden acres. >> all three make smart assets. a new list of california's least expensive places to live. the three are all in the heart of the san joaquin valley. california city is not far from mojave. the other cities on the list sit squarely in the southern california desert. if you've been to your local starbucks lately, you may have noticed a sign on the door. all locations will close early tomorrow. they will have a meeting on race and bias. this prompted by the situation in philadelphia where police arrested two black men from the store. president trump will lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. live pictures from there where you can see there's a rainy

look at how many people were out there over the weekend. of course a lot of expee expected out there today. the weather was perfect yesterday. but if you're going to be out in the water, be prepared and stay safe. the coast guard reminds boaters to wear a life jacket at all times. they say more than 80% of drownings involve people who are not wearing a life jacket. they also remind you that alcohol can be even more dangerous on water than it is on land. drinking contributes to more deadly boating accidents than anything else. and also make sure your boat is ready. making sure it has a fire extinguisher, radio, navigation lights as well. >> all good advice and a nice day to be out on the water. >> people will be doing anything to cool off today. it's going to be super hot in comparison to what we've had recently. for some people, maybe a bit of a shock. it's going to be warmer today, hotter today inland for much of the bay area as we start out

this morning. looks good, feels nice. now's the time to get your grill prepped for today. maybe you should get your grilling done early. here's your live look outside in san francisco. we've got a very shallow layer of fog right over the golden gate bridge and across the bay. but elsewhere it's all clear. the seven-day forecast is now up at the bottom of the screen showing it's going to be a hot start to the week. let's go to concord. one of the hot spots around the bay area today. it'll be at 72 degrees at 9:00. trying to get that food prepped early if you will be cooking out today. 85 already at noon. we're heading into the low 90s today. 92 at 3:00 this afternoon. we're going to see some of those highs for the south bay into the upper 80s. and a light wind, 85 in palo alto. cool temperatures for the coast. in the bay 66 degrees. 75 in san francisco. and 90 in santa rosa. also in napa today. so as you're getting started this morning, hopefully you have the day off.

you need a hat and also sunglasses. also the sun screen if you're going to be outside going boating or going to the beach. make it a beach day. it's a great day to have to break out that swim suit. and also enjoy some cooler air along the coast. half-moon bay will reach into the low to mid-60s. mostly sunny skies today. and if you'll be traveling or coming back home, we've been monitoring what's been happening with tropical storm alberto affecting parts of the southeast from florida to alabama and also all the way up to the ohio valley with some widespread rain. temperatures reaching into the 90s in much of the eastern half it's still going to be very warm up to 88 degrees in san jose today. then a big cooldown with a stronger onshore flow.

it heats up into e the weekend. for san francisco, 75 today but much of the rest of the week will be in the mid-60s. as we get a look of what's happening out there on the roads this morning. looking at the traffic maps. we've had a couple of minor issues, but you can see that most of the sensors are pretty green here. we do have a little bit more traffic coming down into the trivalley. and the camera, golden gate bridge, we just saw that from the wide shot. here's a closer roads flowing smoothly out of the north bay into san francisco. just a couple of patches of fog. >> all right. thank you. coming up next on today in the bay, nfl players say they might sit out the season. the reason they say they won't play. happening now, officials trying to identify a body found in the sacramento river. family members believe it could be paul beverly from oakland whose boat capsized wednesday. two other passengers on that

you may notice more surveillance at palo alto railroad crossings soon. it is to stop people from walk ogen the tracks there. the city will launch its video monitoring system in june. it's partly an effort to swap out human guards who you might have noticed guarding the tracks at this point. our operators will control cameras from a remote site. then they can talk to people who might be near the tracks through loud speakers. if you could earn a living playing video games? many teens would say absolutely. it is a reality for experts at virtual basketball. the nba just launched a full fledged league for those gamers. >> what'd your parents think about this? >> they're old fashioned. especially my father. he was like always telling me to get a job. >> now they see you literally playing if for the nba. >> he's my biggest fan now. >> the league includes benefits, a salary, marketing and training

facilities, and endorsement possibilities. more of a look coming up on the "today" show. this morning there are questions about whether the nfl's national anthem policy will impact the season. >> several players are threatening a new kind of protest. we don't have the specific names yet, but a reporter shawn king from the intercept says several stars tell him they're considering sitting the season out. that is until colin kaepernick and eric reed are signed to some team. many players feel the pair are being black balled for their protests during the national anthem. last week the league announced a policy requiring any player who is on the field during the national anthem stand up. but telling anyone who wants to protest to stay in the locker room. a clear bag security policy. organizers say starting this year anyone who wants to bring
