right now american negotiators are in north korea is the summit the president canceling? is it going to happen after all? >> and winner take all. the warriors could make it appe tonight. today in the bay continues right now. joining us. i )m kris sanchez in for laura garcia. and i )m scott mcg good morning and thanks for joining us. >> marcus has the day off as if it's some sort of holiday or something. i couldn't imagine. >> mike's off too so i'm doing double duty with weather and traffic. as we get a look this morning, all clear. not only in the skies but on the roads as well. let's get a live look outside in san jose. check that out. i mean, at the interchange connector, it's looking pretty quiet there. five cars right there. let's get a look at our temperature trend. it's going to go from 72 at 10:00 to 88 degrees today. it's going to be a lot hotter today than it was yesterday in some of those spots.

martinez goes from 67 at 8:00 to 87 later today. we'll look at all of our high temperatures coming up and a look at traffic as well in just a few minutes. as we get a look at the roads, things are looking pretty good this morning. all green sensors across the bay area. >> thank you. 6:01 now. new this morning, morgan hill police are investigating a large fight that ended with two people being stabbed. it happened a little before 11:00 last night in the heart of morgan hill about a block from the cal train station on west 2nd street. right now police are not revealing detail about who was stabbed or how serious their injuries are. police also are not telling us if they made any arrests. 6:01 new this morning how safe is your neighborhood? crime rates across santa clara county are climbing. >> an overnight report is seeing spikes in several different crime categories.

>> reporter: good morning to you. the santa clara county district attorney's office just released this report for the year 2017. while it notes that crime rates are generally low in the county given the number of people that are here, it does note that violent crime has increased a little bit over the past couple of years. mostly due to juveniles. most of more than half of whom are repeat offenders. according to the da's office, these stats are for juvenile crime. you can see robberies are up 20% over the year. car burglaries, 51%. assaults, 59%. home burglaries, 128%. carjackings, 250%. the mercury news reports the reason why juvenile crimes saw such a big jump was because of the lash money gang. police recently cracked down on the group with two rounds of earlier arrests this year.

even though this agency has started to hire more police officers after losing so many due to layoffs and retirements that began in 2011, the da reports that the department is still super lean. not back to full strength. give you some comparison. new york city has 41 officers per 10,000 residents. san francisco, almost 26. oakland, 17. san jose police department, just 9 for every 10,000 people. reporting live here outside san jose police, bob riddell. >> thanks. developing. looks like the summit president um canceled might happen after all. >> as we speak, a u.s. team is overseas working on negotiations. tracie potts live in washington with a possible new deal. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. they're taking a couple of different avenues working on the logistics and working on the substance here to see if they can get north korea back to the

table. it happens here at the dmz, the buffer zone between north and south korea. a u.s. negotiating team led by a veteran ambassador met with the north koreans sunday to talk strategy. while a white house team headed to singapore to handle logistics. president trump tweets kim jong-un agrees with me on this. it will happen. washington's skeptical. >> it's all a show. it's a show. >> these folks are not going to get rid of all their nuclear weapons. >> this is typical north korea. one step back, two steps forward, one step back. >> act like you want to negotiate then come out with an outlandish view of what that means. >> reporter: south korea's leader met with jim jong-un. but china wants in. >> if we don't have china putting maximum pressure on

north korea, this won't succeed. >> they don't want them talking about peace without the chinese at the table. >> the clock is ticking. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. new witness accounts are providing a clearer picture of the small plane crash. this was yesterday afternoon. just after the plane took off from petaluma airport. debris ended up covering nearby east washington road. two men who walk at a golf course say the plane started making strange noises as soon as it lifted into the air. >> it was, like, choppy. like, the motor was choppy and not fully running. >> we kind of saw it as it was going up in the air. we noticed it was sputtering quite a bit. then we noticed it was quickly falling. >> authorities say a man and a woman died in the crash. we know the plane is registered to a richard bristow of carmichael, california. but officials have not identified the people in the plane. 6:05 now. fire season is definitely

underway. firefighters were very busy every night. last week crews rushed to keep this fire away from homes in san jose. the grass fires in san jose. must have been nerve-racking for them. did burn 16 acres near santa teresa boulevard. we don't know yet what started that fire. some students will be returning to classrooms tomorrow. firefighters investigating the cause of a fire at a preschool in newark. the fire happened on saturday at safari kid preschool on newark boulevard. it was about 1:30 in the afternoon. the firefighters on scene said they smelled gasoline. the flames were put out completely by firefighters. you can see several rooms have both fire damage and water damage. also this memorial day

as we come up on 6:08 this morning, we wake up, we see all clear skies around the bay area. here's a live look outside in palo alto. and 101 looking empty this morning. maybe you're off today and if you do have to work as you start out, we'll be in the upper 50s at 8:00. it's going to be a hot day. we'll have to crank up. it is going to be hot. reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s. a lot of sunshine. a little bit more comfortable by 7:00 this evening. let's look at what's happening out there on the roads this morning. as you get ready to head out. we've got green sensors all around the bay area. couple of minor issues with crashes here and there. but as we look around the parts of the east bay, contra costa county looking smooth flowing out there. our east bay drive time still looking pretty good to the bay bridge. about 16 minutes.

happening today good morning. right now it's 6:12. beautiful sunrise as we look outside in fremont. not a lot of people out there on the roads. quickly from the low 60s to the mid-80s today. reaching our high temperature up 85 degrees at 2:00. not a lot of company if you've got to work, you can maybe hit the snooze button. i'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up. happening today, america remembers u.s. military members who died serving our country.

>> there are many ceremonies coming up. flag raising starts at u 30. across the bay, the uss hornet will host a remembrance at 11:00. you can check the ticker across the bottom of the screen for a complete list of events. former president george h.w. bush is recovering in the hospital this morning. on saturday mr. bush was admitted for low blood pressure and discomfort. he is reportedly alert and no longer experiencing discomfort. mr. bush is expected to remain in the hospital for observation for a few more days. at 93 years of age, he is the oldest living u.s. president. u.s. supreme court is heading into the final stretch of its term. that means several high profile

cases are expected very soon. the court has yet to rule on a case about a christian baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. and the fight over president trump's travel ban is expected to be resolved. also the justices are expected to rule on whether republican lawmakers in texas drew district lines to weaken the voting power of minority groups. this could impact the political makeup of congress and state legislatures nationwide. decisions have to come out by the end of june. another scare in the air to tell you about. a san diego flight bound for tulsa diverted to phoenix because of a bizarre odor. passengers on the fron tier airlines flight said it came through the plane then dissipated. 17 passengers asked to be evaluated. the cause of the odor is being investigated. good news for tesla model 3 owners or the people still waiting to get their hands on one. they preordered. elon musk confirms tesla is

delivering an update to improve cars' braking performance. it's supposed to cut braking distance by 20 feet. the model 3's brakes were a concern for consumer reports. reviewers there said they could not recommend the car. the indiana teacher who thwarted a gunman on friday will make his first remarks today. the shooting happened at noblesville west middle school in indiana. we brought you this as breaking news friday morning. police say a student entered a classroom with two guns and started firing. and then that teacher jason seaman swatted the gun out of the student's hand and tackled the student to the ground. in the process, seaman was shot three times. this weekend he was able to go home from the hospital. president trump sent haim a twet thanking him for his actions and a gofundme page in his honor surpassed $55,000. it is a nice weekend to head to the movies if you don't have air conditioning. >> everybody talking about the latest "star wars" movie "solo."

>> absolutely. it's going to definitely feel like summer. people are going to be going to the beach or just trying to find somewhere to cool off. it's going to be hot for those inland areas. as we start out with clear sun rise this morning. it's going to heat up quickly. so even though we have some 50s and 60s right now, it'll be in the mid-80s at 3:00 to 4:00 today as we head close up to 90 degrees. normal is 75 so we're going way above that. but i don't think we'll set any records. as we look at the seven-day forecast, it's coming up on the screen as we talk about what to expect for today and tomorrow. now, the coast and some of the bay will be up to about 80 degrees. and the valleys from 80 to 90. we'll also have to watch for an increased fire danger. temperatures come down just a few degrees in some spots. as we look at our highs and how that compares to normal, in napa, the high will be 90 degrees. that's 15 degrees above average.

san francisco with a high of 75 is about 10 degrees above normal. and in concord today, 91 which is 13 degrees above where we should be. so a big heat up in our temperatures today, if you're going to santa cruz, right there along the beach boardwalk and the coast. it'll be at about 71 degrees downtown santa cruz in the upper 70s. and in the inland areas today, it's going to be very warm compared to what we've had recently. antioch 93 degrees. 90 in napa and santa rosa. and 95 today in yukia. the other big news will be the tropical system moving the threat of rain across the southeast. if you know someone in that area, you might want to check on them. or if you have someone traveling back to the bay area, you may have travel issues. our highs across the country really hot. but across a good half of the country for the eastern half. we are going to see some highs reaching into the upper 80s for

the inland areas. big cooldown middle of the week. looks nice by thursday. 70 degrees. then it warms up just a little bit just in time for the weekend. san francisco mid-70s today. and we're going to see some low 60s for the rest of the week. as we get you out the door and looking at the commute this morning. if you do have to go to work, just a heads up we've had a couple of minor issues. but that's not affecting the overall drive. we've got a lot of green sensors on the roads right now as we get a look of what's happening from san francisco over towards the east bay. a lot of smooth riding on the roads this morning. taking a live look outside in the tri-valley. looks pretty good. not a whole lot of company this morning. of course this picture completely changes tomorrow as more people go back to work. i'll have a look at the rest of the forecast and also traffic coming up in a few minutes. up next today in the bay,

and welcome back. our tv station in houston has a camera over that massive warehouse fire. we'll see just how big it is. they tell us it's doubled in size in just the last hour or so. we did see a sign on the front of this that said it was used clothing and shoes and whatnot. but it has been burning and a thick plume of smoke has been dotting the houston sky. we'll keep an eye on it as it continues to burn. seven-figure lunch tab. one person's expensive lunch is another person's priceless words

it's going to be very warm this afternoon. grab a couple extra bottles of water. we're going to be in the mid-80s by early afternoon. heading into the upper 80s for early afternoon as our highs for the inland areas go into the low 90s today. concord and livermore, 91 degrees. and 90 in napa and santa rosa. as we see how the roads are moving as you head out this morning, a look at the overall traffic map. we've had a couple of minor accidents with no major injuries. all green sensors that means you have a smooth ride to work. if you're getting ready to head out the door. we'll talk about the weekend forecast in just a few minutes. >> all right. thank you. new this morning, the good news for this san jose fitness store, they don't have replace the window. but you can see how close that car came to making a spriess early morning entry. it hit an adjacent column. it stopped the car just in time. it was all after a 2:00 in the morning so no one was there.

the car also took out a bike rack. our crew on the scene this morning said they saw the driver walking around after. we don't know yet how or why that happened. speaking of cars, here's a story you need to know before your teen gets on the road. summer usually the most dangerous time on the road for teenagers. >> aaa says after memorial day and before school starts, teen crashes jump 15%. today we're live in burlington with tips for parents this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. a discussion for parents to have with their teenagers. now, the time period starts roughly right about right now at memorial day through labor day. they say it's a combination of inexperienced drivers hitting the road and having more exposure to the road with the summer months since they're out

of school. crashes have climbed 15% compared to this time last year. reasons include speeding, buckling up, and distracted driving. aaa also reports in there that in 2015, 60% of teen drivers were killed in a crash were not wearing seat belts. the most important thing there is parents need to set an example as seat belts staying off your phone and creating a parent/teen agreement to set family rules. they want to encourage parents to have these conversations with their teen before they hit the road this summer. >> good at vicdvice. thanks. it's already been a dangerous memorial day weekend. police are in full force through the end of today. they're watching for distracted drivers. people not wearing their seat belts and for drivers who might be behind the wheel under the

influence. several people are already under arrest. this person was arrested for impaired driving. and the chp tells us he rolled his car near the golden gate bridge. and the officer explains just how unsafe this driver was. >> there were five passengers in that vehicle ranging from 16 to 21 years old. and even one of the passengers was sitting on the lap of another passenger as they were driving. >> driving and then rolling over. this is another possible dui crash that happened in san jose early saturday morning. police say the driver of this mustang drove off 880 and crashed and then started a fire. thankfully two people pulled that driver out. >> i just pretty much helped cross the road and then check if there was any person inside the car. >> two rescuers told the chp the driver told them he was drunk at the time. a crackdown on side shows in the east bay, meanwhile. oakland police tweeting out these pictures. officers from the side show unit

are out on the streets this memorial day weekend. they've already towed a few cars including these black and red mustangs. illegal side shows have been a big problem for oakland and other bay area cities. >> berkeley leaders will debate giving their police review commission more authority and more independence. berkeley was actually the first city in the bay area to create a review board. and that was back in the 1970s. over time other cities watch dog groups have assumed more control with less oversight. berkeley leaders may ziet decid add a reform measure. investigators say a man was stabbed. this happened just after 7:00 last night. victim rushed to the hospital. he's going to be all right. several people have been detained but nobody's under arrest. safety has certainly been an issue at that park. last year police increased foot patrols after several violent crimes. a lot of folks are rooting for a german shepherd puppy on

this memorial day. she was rescued along with they are brother from an homeless encampment. they were buried in garbage. the male is missing a paw but expected to be okay. but his sister's jaw is broken in several places and her jaw is infected. >> we don't know if it was an active case of abuse, intentional abuse, or just terrible neglect. you know, we don't know. she might not be able to survive. >> a veterinarian offered to repair the jaw but admits it might not be enough to save her. the antioch water park will let active and retired service members in for free. another water park opens after this video from dublin. you see that boy flying off the slide. the slide's back open, boy's

okay. park officials spent a year adjusting water pressure and levels. so far no problems. today is the last day you will have to take a bus between the concord and pleasant hill b.a.r.t. stations. the tracks have been closed for a number of maintenance projects. but as you know, buses were provided to get riders between the stations. tomorrow you'll be able to take the train. meantime, it is a busy opening weekend for b.a.r.t.'s new service between pittsburgh and antioch. they are expecting more riders today because it is memorial day. it's a ten mile line called e.b.a.r.t. that goes between the pittsburgh center and antioch station. service began on saturday. a warning for drivers in one east bay city. if you are going to fremont, pay attention to the parking signs, folks. the city is conducting extra parking enforcement over the next two weeks. officers want us to tell you about that, that they're looking for people in front of fire hydrants and no stopping zones because they'd rather you didn't do it rather than where i you a

ticket. those violations cost about 60 bucks. take a look at this. this is incredible. this man started on the ground floor. he's working his way up the outside of the building. this is in paris. to rescue that dangling child. it happened saturday. he is an emigrant to paris from mali. child is safe. since then his life has changed immensely. he sat down with french president emmanuel macron who thanked him. france has given him citizenship as well. that man would like to be a firefighter. and frankly i think they're going to hire him. >> i can't believe how he scaled the side of the building like that. >> started on the sidewalk all the way up, gets in there. what you're asking yourself, why is that other person not grag -- tre's a wall there. ul >> real life spider-man. >> no kidding. that is amazing to see. beautiful weather for today whether you're up early.

some folks say they're up early putting stuff on the smoker. >> that's what my mom's doing this morning. a lot of people, though, still had to work. it's going to be a hot day. that's what we have to get ready for. feeling like summer as we unofficially welcome in the season. it's going to be up to 91 degrees in concord today. 88 in san jose. 75 in san francisco. low 90s for the north bay. and as we look ahead to saturday, it's going to be cooler up to 78 degrees for the interior valleys. the bay at 72 degrees and 64 degrees for the coast. and then coming up a couple of degrees inland on sunday. up to 80 degrees. the coast will be up to 66 degrees. today the best beach day. if you're going to the napa valley this weekend, it is going to indeed feel like summer. reaching into the upper 80s on saturday and sunday with sunshine going to squaw valley if you're starting to make plans. it's going to be a beautiful weekend. a lot more of that snow is melting and that will continue as we reach the low 70s looking

clear skies but it is going to heat up quickly today. we're heading into the low 90s for the interior valleys. upper 80s for san jose. and 75 in san francisco. we'll take a look to some cooler temperatures. that's coming up in less than five minutes. all right. we're going to take you back out to houston where that warehouse fire is still burning this morning. some of the smoke, though, starting to dissipate and starting to turn from black to white which is usually a sign of progress as we -- when we cover fires here locally. it is a three alarm warehouse fire. the thick plume of smoke can be seen for miles. scott said he thought he saw signs it was recycled clothing and whatnot. but we're waiting to see what the official cause is. 6:42. some hard to watch video in maryland. a house was washed away in a flash flood. you can hear themsrom people watching it unfold. this happened yesterday about 20 miles outside of baltimore. remember, this is a neighborhood. the nbc station there reporting

three dozen rescues. one person missing. the governor has declared a state of emergency. happening now on the gulf coast this morning, punishing rains, strong winds intensifying threatening to bring tornadoes and dangerous rip currents to the region. alberto is the first named storm of the season expected to make landfall any moment now. it'll hit florida's panhandle before moving inland. the storm expected to dump between 6 to 12 inches of rain across alabama, florida, and mississippi. this morning people in the area preparing for the worst. >> i am filling up sandbags to hopefully keep the rain water from coming in my front door. i'm actually terrified of the amount of rain that is predicted to come in. >> states of emergency already declared in florida and mississippi. and now to hawaii. new developments on the erupted volcano. lava now covers 2400 acres and

it continues t hawaii army national guard soldiers are teaming up with active duty soldiers to get a closer look at the damage. over the weekend a new fissure opens in lelani estates. thankfully this fissure is not threatening structures. here in california we're learning about more families whose dreams are dashed because of this volcano. kathy and gene morgan from san joaquin county spent their life savings hoping to live one day in the lelani estates. right now lava is creeping closer to their. home. after nervously waiting on the mainland for weeks, they decided to travel to the volcano to see what's happening to their dream >> we bought our gas masks. we'll wear them the whole time. we don't have lava insurance. most people don't. so we would lose everything. >> lava already destroyed 82 structures. the new wine learning center is opening tomorrow. you're looking at renderings
