we start with kristen dahlgren. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. coa we're getting word of one person reported missing. rescue crews are looking for him this morning. i want to step out of the way so you can get the sense of the power of this water, the ability of the water to lift these cars and drop them.thth the river rose 17 feet in 2 hours, taking with it much of what was in its path. flooding in ellicott city, maryland. a stone cottage collapsing, forcing a man out in the current.t. the water prompted sudden rescues and shutting down roads. cars swept down the street. >> nobody come to ellicott city right now. >> reporter: creating a dangerous situation, as more than 6 inches of rain came down

in 2 hours. >> severe flooding all across the region. >> we're down in the valley. when the downpours come like that, this is the bottom of the bowl. ow >> rep sign. >> saw a jeep float by. saw water coming in under the doors. >> it's terrible.rehe >> reporter: heavy rolling waters washing away everything. this is the scene at tea on the tiber in ellicott city.vy >> it's heading towards the second floor. we're on the third floor. there's nothing we can do until. somebody comes and gets us. >> reporter: flooding on i-95 north creating dangerous driving cnditions. the flooding causing this road to collapse. two years ago, ellicott city suffered catastrophic flooding as the area got pummeled with a similar amount of rain. people were desperately clinging to their cars when flash floodwaters went through the er center of town, catching many by

surprise, only now to see it all happen again. >> i can tell you, my heart is broken.wnwny i am thinking about what the people have gone through here. >> it's devastating.g.'s i would say it's as bad or worse than the storm two years ago. >> kristen, that scene all-too familiar with those that were there before. i know you've been talking to folks this morning. are they prepared to rebuild? what's the mood like there this morning? >> reporter: that's a good question. when they called it two years ago, they called it a thousand-year flood and we're two years later and it happened again. many can't see what the damage is.al but they're already saying it's too much for them. they don't have the funds to rebuild.he many had just finished rebuilding from the last time. ironically, they had just announced plans for a high-tech flood warning system. but that comes too late for people here.ig >> kristen dahlgren. our thoughts with the folks in ellicott city. farther south, subtropical storm alberto is b

the gulf coast and bringing a rising storm surge. kerry sanders is in panama city, florida this morning. >> because of the rising storm surge will be coupled with the high tide. they will have evacuations to the east of me in franklin county, florida. in this county, they've opened up evacuation centers for folks that want to get out. the concern is the rising water and the wind.coid there's some downed tree limbs that are downed with gusts at 25 or 30 miles per hour. but the real concern later today is the possibility of tornadoes. this morning, ahead of c subtropical storm alberto, heavy downpours and strong, potentially damaging winds in parts of florida, with more to come. up to a foot of rain expected in some isolated areas of the llll region later today. >> everybody has to watch. these things are unpredictable. >> reporter: but predictions are already damping holiday fun.to

winds are whipping up strong e waves and rip currents and beaches. vacationers grabbing whatever time they can despite the weather. >> we were hoping for some sun, and not rain. >> it's better to at the beach raining than at home raining. >> reporter: residents of low-lying areas weren't sitting on the sand, but bagging it. >> i'm filling up sandbags to hopefully keep the rainwater from coming through my front door. a >> reporter: also this weekend, heavy rain near philadelphia, swelled this creek to a torrent. some folks in roanoke, virginia, had to be evacuated when floodwaters threatened their apartments. and in houston, a strong storm n with lightning and hail knocked out power to 50,000 customers. here it's a two red flag warning.

they have the flags out. the beaches are closed.wo that doesn't mean that there might not be a few surfers who decide to get out there. but the real warning is not the surf but the rip current that can actually catch somebody.ar as they've said before, even an olympic swimmer can't beat a rip current.ym guys, back to you. let's follow up on that. dylan is filling in for al today. she's tracking alberto's path.p >> we're six hours or so from the storm making landfall. it's a subtropical storm based on the way it's organized and its structure. h it has winds up to 65 miles per hour and it is producing a lot of rain.on this is going to hit near i destin as we go into lunchtime today. then, it will continue its northward track. it starts to rain itself out along the tennessee river valley. it makes its way up to michigan. we have tropical storm warningsc in the panhandle of florida to mobile, alabama.ll 2 million people under those

tropical storm warnings. but the flooding extends into tennessee and the carolinas, 2 with 35 million people under threat of the flooding potential.nd as we go through this afternoon, we're going to see the feeder bands that produce downpours. even spin-up tornadoes, as well. wednesday and thursday, that rain goes up into the great lakes, believe it or not. as for additional rainfall, we had a couple of inches fall at this point. in panama city, we could see 4 to 8 inches and that could lead to flooding, something we'll keep an eye on as this turns closer to shore. guys? >> dylan, thank you. the holiday weekend took an' unexpected turn for former president george h.w. bush. he's back in the hospital this morning. last month, the 93-year-old was hospitalized for a blood infection, only days after his wife, former first lady barbara bush, passed away.y.. rnas blake mccoy is outside of the hospital in maine. what do we know?

>> reporter: good morning to you. a health scare for the former president, here in maine on vacation. he was in good spirits just a day earlier at his last public appearance. now, this morning, the well-wishes are pouring in. this morning, former president george h.w. bush is back in the hospital for the second time in recent months, admitted to the hospital. experiencing low blood pressure and fatigue. he will likely remain here for a few days for observation. the former president is awake se and alert and not in any discomfort. the morning before, all-smiles, joining veterans for a pancake breakfast for memorial day. his chief of staff joked, i guess he partied too hard with the american legion.n.t he has been hospitalized several times in recent years because of feeling health, most recently in houston with a blood infection shortly after the death of his beloved wife, barbara. m

demilitarized zone this weekend for a surprise summit with south korea's president moon. now an american delegation is there on a surprise visit to discuss getting rid of his nuclear weapons.is it's led by u.s. ambassador sung kim, who has negotiated with north korea before. he's meeting the north's deputy foreign minister, who recently undermined talks by calling mike rence a political dummy. they'll prepare for a summit that was pronounced dead. >> i have decided to terminate the planned summit in singapore on june 12th. >> reporter: -- but seems alive again. >> it's moving along very eicely.de we're looking at june 12th in singapore. that hasn't changed. >> reporter: the president tweeting, the team has arrived for the summit, as if it's fact. and hinting at benefits for as

north korea to be a great economic and financial nation. kim jong-un, he says, agrees with me on this. this momentum was boosted by a korean summit of hugs and smiles. kim jong-un asking for the grgro meeting and committing to a successful summit with president trump. kim may clear his commitment to denuclearize said moon, and to peace. moon has reported that kim is worried about trusting america not to attack and depose him if he does give up nuclear weapons. everyone is now saying they want a summit for their own reasons.r but th by ob denuclearization are still f fr. a team from the white house are due to begin work in singapore soon to prepare for the summit.d the team inside north korea are highly experienced and they'll be looking for real commitments from north korea on denuclearization. not just fine words.

and why this happened. >> reporter: cell phone video gone viral this holiday weekend, showing the moment a day at the beach went horribly wrong. one new jersey police officer seen here repeatedly punching 20-year-old emily wineman in the head, as another holds her down. beachgoers heard pleading for the young mother to stop resisting. >> stop resisting. stop resisting. >> reporter: as the two officers wrestled her into the sand, placing the philadelphia native under arrest. >> i didn't do anything wrong. >> reporter: a third officer is seen holding bystanders back from the chaotic scene. >> back up. >> reporter: but according to the officials, it's what you're not seeing on camera that explains the other side of the story. wildwood commissioner of public safety, saying in a statement, the officer was assaulted first. kicked in the groin, she took off running. in a now-removed facebook post, wineman says she was approached

for underage drinking. the 20-year-old admits to having alcohol on the beach, but claims to have passed a beth lyser test. she says she refused to give her name to the officers, and it's a what led up to the arrest. this morning, the wildwood police chief said the video is alarming, but says he's not rushing to judgment until the investigation is complete. now, wineman faces multiple charges including assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. officials say the involved officers have all been reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of this investigation. as you can see, there's lots of questions about why this got to the level it did. >> so out of hand. anne, thank you. also this morning, we're learning some new details about what happened inside an indiana middle school just days after a student opened fire there. the hero teacher who intervened speaking out this morning after reinased from the hospital. nbc's ron mott continues to follow this story for us. he's in noblesville, indiana.

ron, good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning to you. that hero teacher jason seaman is speaking out this morning, recounting how one of his students was asked to leave the class and came back with guns and opened fire. ,this morning, three days after being shot three times science teacher jason seaman is speaking outs. >> i want to make it clear that my actions on that day in my mind were the only acceptable actions i could have done given the circumstances. i deeply care for my students and their well being, so that's why i did what i did that day. >> reporter: chaos erupted friday. seaman's 7th grade students were taking a test when a shooter walked. 13-year-old el la whistler was struck by gunfire multiple times as well and is recovering. >> i can't say enough how proud of ella i am and how we all should be. her courage and strength at such

a young age is nothing short of remarkable. we should all continue to keep her in our minds as she continues to recover. >> reporter: the shooter whose name has not been released taken into custody shortly after. police say he asked to be excused from class and returned with two handguns. students in nearby classrooms bracing for the worst. >> we ran out of the back the locker room door and we just started running towards the farm field. >> reporter: already a beloved teacher receiving widespread praise and gratitude from students and parents alike. >> he's taken him under his wing. so just a really, really good guy. really cares about the kids. >> reporter: and from president trump, thanks to very brave teacher and hero jason seaman of noblesville, indiana, for his heroic act and saving so many precious young lives. his quick and automatic action is being talked about all over the world. jason seaman is still recovering, but thningisor she's thankful for the support from his community. >> i'm still processing much of what happened.

i can say i'm proud to be a miller. >> jason seaman will be honored today at a high school playoff game. >> thank you, ron. how about a check of the weather on this memorial day? >> craig. we do have alberto we're keeping an eye on in the southeast but also through the western plains just off the rockies we're seeing a round of heavy rain and thunderstorms moving through nebraska. this will move up into south dakota this morning, but later on this afternoon, we are going to see an increased threat of some severe weather. looking at from cheyenne, wyoming, into the panhandle of texas, we have an enhanced risk. a good bet. also some tornadoes are possible as well. besides that, we have very hot temperatures, dozens and dozens of record highs will be broken today. green bay will be running about 20 degrees above average, chicago 93 for a high today.

detroit same thing. cincinnati 91 on tuesday, temperatures stay in the upper 80s and lower 90s. 10 to 20 degrees above average and as we go later into the week, temps will be in the 80s we are going to have a much hotter day on this memorial day and it's going to reach into the low 90s for antioch, concord, as well as livermore and from napa to santa rosa up to ukiah. san francisco, 75 degrees. it will cool off as the week goes along especially wednesday into thursday with highs in inland areas up to 70 degrees and a gradual washirm-up. >> and that's your latest forecast.

alberto's path and how intense the storm is likely to become. what are we see accidening, dyl storm is a few hours away from making land fall. see it make land fall near destine florida. winds 65 miles an hour. moving north at six miles per hour. going to see it get closer to the pan handle of florida early this afternoon. then it moves all the way up into the michigan area by the time we get into thursday. that's where it's going to rain itself out. we have tropical storm warnings along the pan handle of florida. flash flood watches extending up into tennessee and into the carolinas. the rain is going to be heavy at times. we could see very dangerous rim currents as well. flooding rain-x tends through the tennessee river valley and makes its way even further north as the remnants rain its way out. 4-8 inches of rain along the coast. that's why we have major threat for flooding rains.

husband, a retired sergeant in the u.s. army and a wounded warrior. >> grace is pretty fun. she's trying to point to this and that. and flip the page for me. she likes to say, this is dadda and gigi's book. >> reporter: in 2010, michael was wounded in afghanistan during an ied attack. >> we came to a wall. i was the eighth guy over that wall and i stepped on an improvised explosive device. it was pure chaos, just total confusion. >> reporter: michael has undergone over 100 surgeries. >> then down. >> reporter: he lost his leg. his arm was partially paralyzed and he sustained a traumatic brain injury. >> he needs help with almost everything he does all day and will for the rest of his life. his recovery is very much ongoing. >> reporter: ongoing and not

always understood. that's why sarah was inspired to experience at one of her daughter's preschool events. >> i heard a little girl say to our daughter that grace's dad was weird and gross because he didn't have a leg. my children never knew anything was wrong or different about their dad until other people started to tell them. so, this gives them an easy way to share it, understand it and be proud of his military service. grace's dad says people get hurt and their bodies change but they have the same heart. >> reporter: as it southeturned sarah's family wasn't the only looking for these conversations. >> it's hard to answer the questions in a way that's respectful of the veterans and a way that the kids understand. i think the book does a very good job of that. >> sometimes he uses a wheelchair. >> i was very proud of my wife and how she did it. it's almost like a family album with our day-to-day. >> reporter: "hero at home" has

and we have a huge crowd on the plaza to see troye sivan live on the plaza.i )m ... 8 people including a 3 good morning. it's 8:26. i'm chris sanchez. eight people are safe after a terrifying crash this morning near the 680/580 interchange in pleasanton. chp is looking into whether this might have been the result of a hit and run crash. investigators say that minivan crashed into a steep ravine off 680, just a little before 6:00 this morning. it wound up in a drainage ditch. fortunately, all eight people managed to get out on their own. some of the passengers did suffer minor injuries. they are a little shaken up. and we want to take a look at your traffic picture, just in case you're headed to the office today. >> yes, it is starting out nice and calm this morning. a lot of people have the day off. you can tell as we look at all the traffic sensors. a lot of green on the map.

even though we've had a couple collisions around the bay area. a lot of them noninjury which is of course great news as we look at san francisco. it's also been fairly quiet and for much of east bay, we've seen just minor traffic incidents out there that may slow you down but our drive teams looking pretty good. all green, westbound 80, from 4 to the bay bridge, 14 minutes right now. as we look at our san mateo bridge camera, all clear, just a few cars making it on across. >> more local news in half an hour.
