instantly as abc execs woke up to news of the controversy, barr then tweeting out an apology, at around 10:30 a.m. on tuesday, saying she's leaving twitter. >> but that was not enough for abc. it announced the cancellation of her show, at 1:48. and it is not over yet. barr is still on twitter, she's tweeting this morning, despite the announcement that she was going to leave. this time she took aim at her roseanne co-stars, sara gilbert and michael fishman, who responded to her tweet comments, saying wow, unreal and you threw me under the bus, nice. took time to comment, i feel bad for potus, referring to president trump, he goes through this every single day. this story is still unfolding as we speak and craig's got the latest this morning. >> she's been on quite the twitter tear indeed. bottom line, the outspoken trump supporter is off the air. her staff, all out of jobs. and that's just the beginning of the backlash coming fast and furious after the tweet about valerie jarrett. jarrett herself spoke out about

the tweet, exclusively on msnbc. >> overnight, barr returned to twitter, sending out several apologies. don't feel sorry for me, guys, today my words caused hundreds of hard-working people to lose their jobs, later explaining in a since-deleted tweet, it was 2:00 a.m. and i was ambien-tweeting. and then she claimed the comment wasn't racist. >> what's up, deplorable? >> it all stems from an early tuesday morning tweet storm. barr replying to a tweet about the obama administration conspiracy theory writing this about former obama adviser valerie jarrett. muslim brotherhood and planet of the apes had a baby, equals vj, jarrett addressed the tweet during a planned msnbc town hall on racism in america tuesday night. >> well first of all, i think we have to turn it into a teaching moment. i'm fine. >> hours after tuesday's post, barr tweeted an apology for making a bad joke.

and declared that she is now leaving twitter. but those tweets did little to calm the firestorm already ablaze. hours later, abc canceled the hit show. the network's entertainment president writing barr's statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values. some are praising abc's decision to drop the popular sitcom. while others are saying the network should have seen it coming. barr has repeatedly tweeted conspiracy theories about parkland shooting survivors and most recently, chelsea clinton. saying the former first daughter was married to a nephew of george soros and when clinton corrected her, she took another shot. but overnight barr tweeted several personal apologies. before news of the cancellation, producer wanda sykes announced she was quitting the show. the latest season, centering around a white working-class american family, has tackled hot-button issues head-on. barr has been an outspoken

supporter of president trump, and brought her politics to the show. >> most of all, lord, thank you for making america great again. >> trump has previously praised the show's ratings. at a political rally tuesday, the president did not address the actress or the tweet now just months after barr's return to the spotlight, an abrupt ending to her show. and possibly her tv career. the roseanne reboot was the highest-rated, most-watched series on broadcast tv with another season already in the works and for roseanne barr even though she's still venting on twitter. she said she's going to be giving her side of the story on a radio show this friday. >> as we note, this happened very quickly yesterday. sounds like some of the co-stars of the show didn't even know it was canceled until they read about it in the press. >> one of the things that's been most striking to a lot of people is the speed with which abc acted. reportedly roseanne barr was

made aware before she was fired. but a lot of the staff found out as the story was unfolding. one of the co-stars in the show, emma kenney tweeted out, as i called my manager to quit working on roseanne, i was told it was canceled. i feel so empowered by wanda sykes. >> we'll keep watching twitter. this morning breaking news out of north carolina, the remnants of alberto are being felt, a dam there is on the verge of bursting. threatening thousands who have been forced to evacuate we got it all covered, starting with nbc's kerry sanders. hey, kerry, good morning. >> good morning, all attention this morning on the lake tahoma dam, concerns it may be compromised. it is located in the pisgah national forest, east of asheville, north carolina. >> north carolina engineers say the excessive rains from

subtropical storm aberteau have overwhelmed the structure. 700 residents in marion, north carolina and 900 from old fort have not been told when they'll be able to return to their homes. the national weather service is warning residents to stay off the roads as the increased threats of landslides and debris flows continues through wednesday night. the national weather service tweeting act now to preserve your life. a portion of i-40 is closed this morning due to a mudslide. the earthway giving way, five to six vehicles hit by the mudslide. but first responders report everyone was rescued without injury. >> we'll go door to door, which is what we had to do in some cases last night. and people pretty much heeded the warning that i think you know the heavy rains told them twaenlt something to play with and got out. >> interstate 40 has reopened in both directions, but with the amount of rainfall expected this afternoon, the authorities believe there could be more

flash flooding that carved through the community of ellicott city for the second time in two years. newly released 911 calls painting a haunting picture. >> i have a lady stuck in a building over here across the street from me. and the water is getting higher and higher on her. >> the town at a loss as they take stock of the damage. >> it's awful. i mean, that's the only word you can use to describe it, it's incredibly awful. >> this was popular main street coffee shop bean hollow before sunday. here it is now. >> walking around town is like after the apocalypse, everybody is filthy and dazed and exhausted. >> the shop's owner, gretchen chewy, making the difficult decision to not reopen in her beloved ellicott city, planning to move the shop to a location nearby. >> we're going to get through this and we're going to make sure that we don't go through it again. >> but this morning the toll is much more than financial. edison herman, the air force vet and national guardsman who went missing after trying to help a

stranger was found dead after an extensive search. >> mr. herman is a hero. who put the lives of others before his own. >> kate bowman saying the 39-year-old sprang into action to save her life. >> he was holding me, my cat and he just saw a person in danger and ran to the rescue. >> in a statement, herman's family saying in part we are overcome with grief, but we are also comforted by his courage, his strength and his selflessness to help someone else in a deadly storm. officials paying tribute to herman with a salute as a heartbroken town readies for a strong road to recovery. and maryland's governor has ordered that all flags in the state be flown at half-mast in honor of that hero. hoda and savannah, back to you. >> he was a hero, kristen, thank you very much. president trump spoke out at a campaign-style rally overnight in nashville as the white house focuses on getting the canceled

summit with north korea back on track. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with details. hey, peter, good morning. >> good morning, hoda. a senior north korean official is on his way to the u.s. to negotiate the terms of the summit that appears on again. south korean media reporting overnight the official is believed to be carrying a personal letter from kim jong un to president trump. and this morning, even as the white house is moving forward with its plans, nbc news has learned new details of a c.i.a. assessment suggesting the intelligence community had significant doubts about north korea's seriousness. president trump in music city, playing to a crowd of his biggest fans. >> i'm the only politician that produced more than i said i was going to produce and we're only one and a half years in. but the president still working to produce peace on the korean peninsula. as the white house says it's actively preparing as if the singapore summit with kim jong

un is happening despite the president's abrupt announcement last week. >> i've decided to terminate the planned summit in singapore for june 12th. >> press secretary sarah sanders say the north koreans have been engaging since president trump's letter backing out of the summit. but his goal of a nuclear-free north korea could be a mirage. nbc news has learned a recent c.i.a. intelligence assessment has concluded north korea does not intend to give up its nuclear weapons any time soon. according to three u.s. officials. that assessment goes against president trump's recent statements otherwise. tweeting just last month -- they have agreed to denuclearization. so great for world. one intelligence official who has read the c.i.a. report circulated just days before the summit's cancellation, tells nbc news -- everybody knows they are not going do denuclearize. in an odd twist, one concession the report suggests the north koreans may be willing to make, is opening a western-style burger joint in the capital city of pyongyang as a show of goodwill.

on tap to help salvage the summit, a meeting in new york city between secretary of state mike pompeo and a top north korean official. despite sanctions prohibiting kim young chol from traveling to the u.s., the state department says it's cleared the way for him to come. also overnight the president getting push-back for his explosive claim that the fbi planted a spy in his campaign. while investigating trump aides' possible links to russia. >> how do you like the fact they had people infiltrating our campaign? can you imagine? >> late tuesday, republican congressman trey gowdy, who is part of a highly classified justice department briefing last week, said he saw nothing to support the president's claim. >> i am even more convinced that the fbi did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got. and that it has nothing to do with donald trump. >> peter, on another note i understand you have new details overnight about the russia special investigation? >> yeah, hoda, that's right. "the new york times" is

reporting a dramatic confrontation between president trump and the attorney general, jeff sessions, this is back in march of last year, now being investigated by the special counsel robert mueller. the "times" reports according to confidantes and former administration officials that sessions had flown to mar-a-lago in florida, because mr. trump was refusing to take his calls. when they met, the president berated sessions for his decision to recuse himself from the russia investigation. told him he should reverse his decision. but that sessions refused. all of it now pointing to a potentially broader of obstruction of justice inquiry by the special counsel than was previously thought. also this morning, who mos governor eric greitens is gone. once seen as an up-and-coming star in republican politics, greitens has resigned in the face of a sex scandal with disturbing details coming to light. nbc's ron mott is in the capital city of jefferson city, missouri. ron, good morning to you. >> good morning to you this

resignation takes effect at 5:00 p.m. here friday at the state capital. when he took office, eric gritens vowed to clean up missouri politics, but he's leaving under dark clouds, admitting to an extra marital affair, allegations of campaign finance violations. >> eric greitens will step down in disgrace. >> i'm announcing i will resign as governor of missouri effective friday june 1st at 5:00 p.m. >> this election is all about -- >> the embattled republican governor, once a rising star in the party lashed out at critics in the face of multiple controversies and a bipartisan i impeachment effort zwlxt it's cloer for the forces who oppose us, there's no end in sight. >> but the former navy s.e.a.l. who campaigned on fighting politics as usual was also fighting back tears. >> time has come, though, to tend to those who have been

wounded. >> his resignation comes after a bombshell sex scandal and ethics investigation. on tuesday a judge ruled the governor's campaign must reveal fundraising information to a state house committee investigating his conduct. his former aide also told lawmakers that during the 2016 election, greitens campaign discussed soliciting foreign donations, a violation of federal law. >> i've not broken any laws or committed any offense worthy. of this treatment. >> in february, greitens was indicted for felony invasion of privacy following disturbing details of an extra marital affair before he was elected. the woman, known only as ks, accuses the 44-year-old of abusing her during multiple sex encounters, allegedly threatening to release a nonconsensual photo he took of her. greitens admits to the affair, but denies being abusive. the felony charge was dismissed. not revealing her identity, ks gave her first interview to

incredible. could be a group ak at this time. looks like a people rolling competition. we're going to begin with morgan freeman. he's firing back against a report that swept him into the middle of the me too movement. correspondent kate snow has the details. hi kate. >> reporter: good morning. freeman's attorney writing a ten-page detailed letter to cnn, demanding a retraction and public apology. the cable network standing by its reporting, as freeman's attorneys push back on the several allegations of sexual harassment levied against him. >> reporter: this morning, morgan freeman is fighting back. his attorney demanding a retraction from cnn, that first reported eight accusations of sexual harassment against the oscar-winning actor last week. >> we have zero confidence in cnn's reporting to believe that any of this happened. >> reporter: in a letter to jeff zucker, freeman's attorney lambasted the report, as the product of

malicious intent, sleight of hand and malpractice. and journalist particular malpractice. cnn says it stands by its reporting and will respond forcefully to any intimidating of covering this issue. >> do i wish i was there. >> that remark at the center of an allegation from one of t co-author of the report. said freeman made that comment about her body. she says he made that comment about a story about the co-star not the reporter. >> i congratulate the woman on being pregnant and she wasn't. i've never done it again. after 50 years, i've never done it. i learned my lesson. >> boy do i wish i was there. >> they say she reported the incident to hr, which investigated her claim and concluded it was not supported by the facts. free nont calls out cnn for

allowing them to be a writer on the story. she baited and prodded supposed witnesses to say bad things to get them to confirm their bias against them. his attorneys write it was beyond the reporter's complaint. five anonymous complaints came froms offices of freeman's own production company. one accusing freeman of trying to lift up her skirt and asking if she was wearing underwear. one of the other women has since said she was not harassed. >> i'm sorry for anyone who has had an unfortunate experience or feels harassed or assaulted. that wasn't my experience with morgan freeman. >> freeman twice apologized to anyone he may have upset for behavior he says didn't come across the way he intended, saying in part it's not right to

gabe gutierrez is in san juan with this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it has been more than eight months since hurricane maria ripped through this island. while the capital city is back up and running, some mountain towns are still without power. now, a new report out with a staggering statistic, that more than 4,000 people may have died here. this morning, mounting anger in puerto rico, over the government's response to hurricane maria. harvard researchers estimating at least 4,600 people died because of little access to power or medical care during the storm's aftermath. that's dramatically higher than the official count of 64. her father died a week after the category 4 hurricane hit in cement. at home in the dark, without power, he was not able to get the life-saving oxygen he relied on to survive. his daughter blames the hospital and the government for not doing enough.
