get away from the heat, you may want to do that again today. you can see the sun sunshining, nice, clear skies and ridge of high pressure is holding on strong. 63 degrees, the wind speeds are calm and -- as we head towards the start of the workweek, 60 degrees in san francisco, half moon bay 49, palo alto 54 and concord at 62 degrees. we will be jumping once again into those upper 80s and 90s for interior valleys and once again we'll be seeing a bit of a change as we head towards the workweek. you'll want to stick around for the next 15 minutes because i do have a complete breakdown of your daytime highs but also when that big change is coming that i'm talking about. >> i cannot wait for it. >> stay tuned. 15 minutes, vianey, thanks. >> new yoerovernight, a victim the hospital following a stabbing at a b.a.r.t. station. it happened at 10:20 last night

at the dell noert station. the victim was established on the westbound platform and air lifted in critical condition. investigators had to call for a mutual aid because unruly b.a.r.t. passengers were interfering with their work. the b.a.r.t. station had to be shut down while police investigate the stabbing. b.a.r.t. has not said when the el cerrito del norte station will happen. the fire at the recycling plant left plumes of smoke seen for miles. firefighters from several departments responded to schnitzer steel near the port of oakland around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. they called for backup to help contain the massive fire. did you see that. viewer video shows the plumes of smoke over the port. fire officials say scrap metal like old cars are shredded and recycled at this facility. investigators found the fire started when residue on the

metal caught fire and quickly spread. the fire only burned half an acre but causing concern over air quality due to possible toxins that may have been released. >> some of those could possibly have some materials that are probably not that great for your health. >> we're going through internal investigation to make sure that everything that is moved through our machines is up to code. the bay area air quality management district is monitoring those toxin levels. a spokesperson for schnitzer insisted there was not an unsafe amount of material at the site. they tell us employees followed new plo rotocols, the latest fi happened in march. the bay area air quality management district can fine companies up to a quaurtder million dollars for fires that pollute. but our investigative unit reviewed other fires at this facility and areas.

we can view -- nbcbayarea.com. when the fire first started yesterday afternoon, we also shared your viewer videos and you can stay up to the minute when news break. follow us on on at which titwit area. yesterday's heat was too much for a hiker in solano county. this is video of a helicopter rescue of an 83-year-old hiker, the helicopter crew said it was about 98 degrees around 12:30 yesterday afternoon when the woman suffered a heat related emergency. the chp posted this video of the rescue near the cold canyon reserve. the woman we're told is expected to recover quickly. two experienced climbers lost their lives yesterday morning when they plummeted off elcap tan. spoke with someone who knew the climbers and remembers their passion for the sport. according to national park

rangers they received several 911 calls and rushed there to provide assistance. >> we found two climbers had fallen and the fall did result in a fatal fall. >> they've been identified as tim klein of palm dale and jason wells from boulder, colorado. >> this accident happened in the free blast area. hans florine knows both who died and making arrangements to climb with tim klein last year. known for his speed and knowledge of el capitan. >> hit the nose twice in a day which no one has done, except his partner. including me. >> klein is a teacher the palmdale high school and this trajly comes more than two weeks since another climbed at half dome during stormy weather. also fell more than a month ago and broke both legs. still recovering and trying

to -- was he doing what he loved? >> by all accounts, what i know of both jason and tim, yeah, they were doing what they loved. >> sergio quinn tan that, nbc bay area news. now to a wildfire burning very close to home in the east bay, the fire broke out just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon nearcircle. the flames were moving fast through dry vegetation, cal fire created a barrier to protect those nearby homes and they also used a helicopter to drop water on the flames. >> close to the houses. >> were you worried at all? >> yeah, because it's a lot of -- apartments and and helicopters and it's fire. >> the fire burned 12 acres and able to keep it from damaging any structures. yesterday was a busy day for firefighters in contra costa county. the firefighters in antioch one

of many that burned across the county. the fire started in 3:00 in the afternoon and flames spread quickly. firefighters also put out another house fire nearby around that same time. >> now to a sea of orange that took over the golden gate bridge yesterday in honor of national gun violence awareness. thousands marched across the span with their unified message, no more silence and gun violence. san francisco's protest was just one of many that happened across the country demanding common sense gun laws. some in the crowd were victims of gun violence themselves or had loved ones lost in gun violence. several high school students joined the demonstration and say they were inspired by the survivors of the high school shtings in parkland and santa fe, texas. >> having younger voices show up, we're able to show a lot of lawmakers that we aren't going to back down and we are the new

future generation coming about. >> the event was organized by moms demand action. >> not just in san francisco, gun violence awareness events took place across the bay area and country. a rally here that you're seeing in redwood city drew hundreds of people, bay area congresswoman anna chu was one of the speakers. she urged people to take their anguish and anger over gun violence to the ballot box. organizers say the main purpose of the event was to honor all of the victims. >> i think that politicians have to be held accountable but i think what it's about today is standing united and saying -- using our collective voice to say we're sick of what is happening. we need this to end. 96 lives lost is 96 too many. >> the wear orange movement was started by friends of the chicago teen killed by gun violence in 2013. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay," coming up, one of the most popular comedians in the world performed

morning. this lawnmower sparked a fire yesterday on double k road in brentwood, contra costa posted the picture on facebook, it burned a quarter acre before it was knocked out. >> now to amy schumer, the comedian performed at clusterfest last night in san francisco. and some people were not there to see here but to protect her. sex workers as they are calling themselves gathered outside the bill graham auditorium and say they are upset with schumer for making jokes about them. they are also upset about schumer's support of a controversial new sex trafficking law. the protest coincided with others across the country for international sex workers day. to better news in san francisco, a high flying stunt to reveal san francisco's newest street sign in honor of the legendary tony bennett. the crowd amazed as it looks like the 91-year-old singer was repelling from the top of the fairmont hotel. as he got a little closer the

vianey is here with a look at our sunday forecast. i mean, san francisco is usually the place to go for cooler weather. >> it is but -- >> 70s, yeah, had to escape the heat. >> it's going to be another one of those days, moderate heat risk but still keep in mind to remain aware if you're going to take your pets for a walk not during the peak heat time which is typically during the 10:00 and 3:00 p.m. hour. try to hold off maybe a nice evening walk would be more appropriate. woodside you can see we've got nice clear skies and it is going to warm up because we do still have the high pressure that is dominating in the forecast. napa at 58 degrees and san francisco at 60 degrees. san jose 63 degrees already and it's only 7:18 in the morning. can you imagine what it's going to be like around 10:00. i'll break it down for you. the 24-hour temperature change in livermore, already seven degrees warmer at this hour. today we're expecting to see

slightly cooler temperatures along the coast. the reason for that is we're going to see that ridge of high pressure start to move out east and we have a bit of a trough taking over the west coast. today once again is going to be your last day of seeing these hot, hot temperatures for now that is. san jose climbing to a high of 87 degrees and san jose hit 93 yesterday and remember during the tease, i said who hit 99? concord. yesterday concord almost hit the triple digit mark but topped out at 99 degrees. da concord is expected to be 93 degrees. san francisco 70 degrees, once again our predicted high, oakland 75 and napa 87. and let's talk about what's going to happen the next few days. we've got this ridge of high pressure, this is what brought that heat and the drying of the bay area. you can see as rewe head towards the workweek, we'll start to see a trough dominate which means it will bring a nice flow cooling us down a bit monday tuesday and wednesday. what that's going to do, it's going to bring coastal low

clouds with a possibility of seeing nice light morning drizzle. it will cool us down quite nicely. as we head towards thursday and friday, once again we see the return of warmer temperatures thanks to another ridge of high pressure and we'll be seeing valleys back up into the mid-80s as we head towards next weekend. if you enjoy warmer weekends, this is going to be a chance to see warmer temperatures once again. looking to get away, this might be a fantastic shot. look at this. lake tahoe looking beautiful. great place to head out and escape the heat or maybe trying to head over to the beach. half my ban expected to climb in the 50s. by 11:00 a.m., we'll be at 57 degrees and half moon bay will be one of the cooler spots. i mentioned we've got a bit of a cooling under way at the coast. half moon bay will be one of the spots. over the next seven days we'll notice the bigger drop of temperatures in wednesday, a nice cool down to a high of 60 degrees.

if you notice once again we start to warm up quite nicely towards the weekend. we drop down by 5 degrees inland and eventually about 10 or 15 plus degrees towards tuesday and wednesday before we see another warm-up heading in towards next weekend. we've got a nice little temperature trend pattern going on this week. looks good, vianey, i like the 76 at the end. >> perfect weather. thanks so much. it is 7:21. reuniting families. a story of hard work being celebrated. this is a story that will make you bay area proud next. care... the statistics show the

mountain. there's haze in the way there and boy, it's a carbon copy of yesterday morning, isn't it? thanks so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. >> second hot hot day in a row indeed. expecting to see 90s out there but it will be slightly cool are in some spots. >> slightly when i say slowly, i mean that. along the coast we're expecting to still see cooling. further inland some of those 90s that we reached yesterday might drop down to upper 80s, not too bad, san francisco nice clear skies, i can see plenty of sunshine to go around and already at this hour we're seeing 60 degree temperatures in san francisco and in san jose right now at 63 degrees. napa at 58. we will be very quick to warm once again. we'll start to climb in the 70s by the morning and it eventually climbing in the 8 0e's by mid afternoon. your 24-hour temperature change a couple of degrees warmer in

and he kicked the dog fracturing his skull. despite getting the best care, puppet could not make it. anyone who recognizes this man is urged to call police. yesterday was a sea of orange marching across the golden gate bridge. it was one of many rallies across the country to try to bring an end to gun violence. today in the bay christie smith was there with this report. >> they walked across the golden gate bridge with a unified message and for some with a personal story. >> he was shot and killed in december. >> urged to gun violence. >> i don't want no mother to feel the way i feel or no mother to endure this pain. >> she joined hundreds of others wearing orange on national gun violence awareness day. >> they specifically selected orange because that's what hadn'te e hunters wear to protect themselves. >> this is moms demand action

and the order of about three to five cents a gallon extra. >> rising prices are nothing new. fact check.org says the cost of gas has increased by 50 cents a gallon over the past several months. >> the real driving factor in late 2016, opec limited the supply of oil and that has been steadily driving prices up since late 2016. >> another factor is a strong global economy which drives up demand. as far as senator chuck schumer's claim, fact check.org says it's a typical political ploy to pin the blame for rising prices on the government. >> president trump was a frequent critic of president obama when prices were going up under his administration. as one expert told us, obama wasn't to blame for the higher prices then and trump isn't to blame for the higher prices now. >> the energy information administration predicts the national average will range from 2.90 to $3 a gallon over the summer. i'm lauren make for nbc news.

be natured with the campaign in any way. also, there are no limits on the money, no limits on the money that can be raised for independent expenditures. this last point has changed -- it's changed everything, the complexion of political campaigns in california and for that matter, throughout -- >> sort of mind blowing that there's no limit. so how did this come to pass? how are we here? >> in the past most political campaign funds would be raised by candidates and two a lesz el extent parties, several supreme court decisions have just eliminated dollar limits on campaign contributions by individuals or groups as long as they are separate from the candidate's campaign. these do become known as independent expenditures or as we were talking off air, super pacs. >> super pacs. >> now if governor jerry boun retiring and governor race is huge, like 27 candidates or

something like that. how have these independent expenditures worked in that race? >> 27 of your closest friends that i'm sure everybody knows, not. >> exactly, i think i know like four of them. >> to the point it's varies by campaign. look at the gavin newsom campaigns for governor. a good example. both in terms of the money raised directly by the candidates and the outside funds that have poured in, we're looking at these two because they have collected the most money in the governor's race although their sources different. most of the many comes from contributors and most from the outside courses. so -- on the surface, the two campaigns have gathered similar dollar amounts. look, most from friends and supporters and what not. villa raigos villaraigosa, a mafrom -- a mas

difference. >> i'm shocked but does this all even matter? some people will say the obvious, they will say, campaign money is campaign money wherever it comes from. thank you very much. but others would suggest that sources matter since most of us know so little about individuals and the groups behind those independent expenditures and here's why. typically in the cases here as well as other campaigns, the funders of nmd expenditures use nondestri non nonscript titles, like californians for good government as if anybody is against that or citizens against corruption in california. yeah, i'm for it. but that's the kind -- that's the kind of name that appears as the sponsor for a commercial that extolls the virtue of a political candidate or lashes out at a competitor. look, make no sense about it, independent expenditures are

completely legal but the burden falls upon the voter to figure out which groups support or oppose these candidates. >> it's easy to fall for it if you see a commercial sponsor by citizens against corruption and politics, of course, no one wants corruption in politics. what are we the voters to do with this? >> wish i had a nice answer for you. the fact is there is no easy answer here. but if nothing else, it's always wise to learn as much as possible about a candidate. his or her values and the money behind that candidate. it can be a daunting process. i mean that. but it's the only way to really understand campaigns in an era of abundant campaign finances. i will give one bit of hope. there's an organization called map light.org. if you have a look at that, that will help some. >> two more days to study up. thanks to you. we'll be back after this.
