5:00 am
with us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez, laura garcia is off. i am super happy to see you guys, especially kari because she's bringing us cooler temperatures. >> come on, kari. >> i know you like the cool weather. marcus, i know you don't mind it's hot and in the 80s and 90s but we've had a little bit of everything for everybody. and if you're going out to the giants game tonight, it is going to be cool. make sure you're wearing the hoody while the inland areas are going to be still very warm today and later on this evening, first pitch at at&t park, it will be only 58 degrees. at least there will be sunshine. it's going to be windy out there too. gusty winds along the coast, inland areas into the upper 80s for the afternoon and it's going to continue to cool off as we go through the week. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike has an update for the crash in fremont. >> i've been updated by the update in my ear. thanks so sara and shawn. it's right here. that's the worst part and only real problem we have right now for the bay, northbound 680 we
5:01 am
have all lanes blocked right now by a crash and crews arrived on scene an injury crash, all i know, the extent i'm not sure. northbound is jammed up to cal ver ras up to jacqueline road and the bowling alley and those folks off of 680. as you travel north out of milpitas and towards fremont, 880 as the alternate then cross over at mission. chp is very busy and it sounds like there's communication problems from that area as well. we'll follow that problem out of the south bay. here to the north, much easier drive and you can see the sunrise happening already. no slowing for the north bay. back to you. it is 5:01. we're following breaking news from overnight. >> a woman is recovering after being hit by a car near san jose state. i want you to look at this video, this is of the scene right there, new video, this happened at first and alma. no on the victim's condition. it's unclear if police are investigating this as a
5:02 am
hit-and-run. we'll continue to follow this as breaking news and bring you the latest as soon as it comes in. >> developing in central america, brand-new video of rescuers in gauatemala after a volcano eruption there. this is video someone posted on twitter. you can see crews trying to carry people on a stretcher and also people carrying children to safety. just an example of a desperate search for survivors. if you're just catching up, here's what we know about the tragedy, volcano of fire erupted last night. at least 25 people are dead and nearly 300 are known to be hurt. but entire towns are cut off right now so who knows what's happening there. more than 3,000 people did evacuate. it is a volcano's most violent eruption in more than 40 years. continuing coverage in hawaii as well and thankfully no deaths in kilauea's eruption but lava is still flowing freely on the big island. this is new video from the

5:04 am
expected to be operational within the next few weeks here in palo alto. when they are up and running, the new video cameras equipped with thermal imaging will be on the lookout for people trying to stand or jump in front of an oncoming caltrain. the cameras are located at the four railroad crossings within the city limits, namely at meadow drive and palo alto avenues, the city has hired a company to watch camera feeds from an off site location and call law enforcement if they see something unusual. the monitors can also speak through a pa system to alert the person on the track that help is on the way. the city has been paying security guards to monitor these crossings since 2009 around that time. that was shortly after a number of teenagers committed suicide on the tracks. unlike the security guards the new cameras can seehe tracks an rain or fog. >> so we're hoping that not only will this provide better monitoring, the ability to see
5:05 am
further down the tracks than the hu human eye but provide faster notification to law enforcement and be more cost effective. >> the new cameras will save the city of palo alto money in the long term, even though the cost up front is $1.5 million to install the cameras and $325,000 a year to operate. again, the city hired this company, the company is testing these cameras again, the idea is to have these fully operational sometime this month. reporting live here in palo alto, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> hopefully really can save lives there. it is shaping up to be a busy summer for kim jong-un. in last two hours a kremlin spokesman indicated that russian president vladimir putin recently invited north korea's leader to visit russia in september. one main reason would likely to attend the eastern economic forum. the north korean summit is still

5:13 am
5:14 am
good monday morning, we're 30 minutes abay from sunrise and starting to see the sun coming over the horizon with clear skies to start as we go to evergreen for the temperature trend, it will be 66 degrees at 9:00 and upper 70s today coming down from the 90s yesterday and it will continue to cool off as we go through the week. more on that and full microclimate forecast in less than five minutes. >> looks like the sensors are adjusting but significant slowing out of milpitas towards fremont. the sigalert still in place. traffic problems for the fremont approach out of milpitamilpitas >> good morning and happy monday to you. companies making news this morning, several reports say microsoft will buy san francisco's get hub. microsoft stock has really been on a tear.
5:15 am
microsoft the third most valuable company in the world. we start the week with that great jobs news still ringing in our ears, the "new york times" says it ran out of words to describe how good the economy is. i called it bonkers. we're in a red hot economy. and apple launches its worldwide developers conference today. it's back in san jose. here are some wobbly live pictures. kim cook will speak at 10:00 a.m. this is not one of those major announcements where he unveils a brand-new big thing. this one is oriented towards programmers who make things for apple devices. we'll cover it throughout the day. video for you from the american trade team in china over the weekend trying to avoid a trade war. apple has to be watching this one carefully. remember, as a candidate, donald trump called for huge tariffs on electronics made in china. canada is also very angry about new tariffs against their country.
5:16 am
the prime minister was on our "meet the press" astounded that done add trump thinks canadian steel sean aluminum is a national security threat to america. >> one of the things i have to admit i have a lot of trouble getting around is the idea that this entire thing is coming about because the president and the administration have decided that canada, canadian steel and aluminum is a national security threat to the united states. the idea that the canadian steel that's in military vehicles in the united states, the canadian aluminum that makes your fighter jets is somehow now a threat? the idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the united states is quite frankly insulting and unacceptable. >> he points out we stormed the beaches of normandy together, how can we be a national security threat? really what's happening, you can't just throw tariffs against a country.
5:17 am
that violates rules. the only way to do it legally is too say they are a national security threat or our own steel production is necessary. so we've got to call canada a national security threat in order tore the tariffs to go through. >> we're so offended we're so nice. >> but we're sorry nonetheless. >> exactly. >> meanwhile, i didn't realize that justin trudeau's voice sounded like that. i don't know why. >> he's an interesting guy. >> new this morning, former president bill clinton talks publicly about the me too movement and and about monica lewinsky in an exclusive interview with nbc news he reacts to suggestions he should resign. at one point in the interview, this tse exchange with craig melvin about lewinsky's recent open editorial saying she sees their consensual affair through a new lens, basically saying it may have been sexual harassment. as you'll see he's still very defensive about it. >> you are giving one side and omitting five -- >> mr. president, i'm not trying
5:18 am
to present a side. >> no, you asked me if i agreed and the answer is no i don't. >> i asked if you would ever apologize. you said you have? >> i have apologized to everybody in the word. >> you didn't apologize to her. >> i have not talked to her. >> do you feel you owe her an apology? >> no, i do not -- never talked to her but i did say publicly on more than one occasion that i was sorry. >> someone should ask you these questions because of the way you formulate the questions, i dealt with it 20 years ago plus and the american people two thirds of them stayed with me. and i've tried to do a good job since then with my life and with my work. that's all i have to say. >> clinton also said he thinks the me too movement is a good thing and is way overdo. the other man you see is james patterson, they are on a book tour. they will speak at the sap center later this month. maybe patterson will get to say
5:19 am
something. you can watch the full interview in the first half hour of the "today" show right after "today in the bay." >> what could be more special than your graduation. >> how about a surprise visit from your father you thought was stationed far away overseas? >> the fifth -- [ applause ] >> you see right there, heuy is graduating walks or the is his father, he thought his father was stationed far away. this is in massachusetts, a high school there for that senior. that's tyler sullivan, his father was actually deployed in kosovo but made it back to celebrate on saturday. tyler received his high school diploma the first time the two have seen each other in six months. perhaps explaining that extra extra long embrace there. can you imagine that? >> no, i really cannot.
5:20 am
i couldn't imagine not having my dad at my graduation. >> just to see his dad came all the way back in time for that. >> the problem is when we show these, i do imagine it and get all choked up. >> i know, can we record the next segment -- >> i'm sorry, i'm sorry. but i had to share that. >> that's good. >> makes you feel good on a monday morning and we're going to also have more feel good weather across the bay area and we had temperatures range from 58 degrees to 102 degrees yesterday. we're going to kind of even out the score a little bit and bring it down. we're going to start out now at 57 degrees in san francisco and 60 degrees now in livermore as we go to concord, no 90s today but be in the mid-80s and fz going to feel better and we still keep the sunshine starting out at 69 degrees and up to 84 degrees at 3:00 today as we go around the bay area check out our high temperatures for today, it will be 87 in gilroy while downtown san jose will be up to

milpitas and towards fremont, the problem is that jacqueline road. we only have one lane open in your northbound direction. now that's counter whatever commute we have right now. southbound sees more traffic flow out of the tri valley. unexpectedly backed up to the scene. you get over to 880, use 880 past 237 and up towards mission and you'll cut over north of the slowing. there's a crash and it sounds like pretty serious injuries are over there. chp has to get there and take care of the injuries as well as remove a vehicle where they have to -- load it on a flat bed. the rest of the bay getting towards the bay bridge, very smooth. we have the backup forming at the toll plaza and we'll track that on pace for the metering lights, back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up next, the state on edge this morning as police confront a potential serial killer who could be responsible for as many as four murders. >> testing the safety of vaccines, the in depth study just released this morning. don't forget tomorrow is election day.

5:34 am
voting on tomorrow. the one we've been following, the california voters will have to narrow down the field in the governor's race from 27-2. you have mayor gavin newsom making rounds in southern california appealing to voters in that area of the state yesterday. then you had former los angeles mayor antonio villaraigosa campaigning here in the bay area. it appears to be continuing to do so later today. also voters with decide whether to send dianne feinstein back to washington, d.c. for her fifth term. we'll keep a close eye on that. another big measure for vote ares and commuters to keep an eye on, is regional measure three. that would increase tolls to raise money for transportation projects aimed at reducing congestion. if that's approved by 2025, you'll pay 8 bucks to cross most bridges in the bay area. as an important transportation issue. not too far from where we're standing it's going to be on the

5:38 am
that study by the bay area council found 46% said they are likely to leave in the next few years. that's up from 34% just two years ago. the reason is no big surprise here. it's the high housing prices and cost of living. >> most people who live here know what causes people to leave. you know, everything is expensive, traffic, homeless -- >> i have decided to move into a travel trailer and park it in the delta area then commute here to the city. >> wow, big move there. so survey takers also say the bay area traffic is another huge factor in them wanting to leave. >> speaking of traffic, mike inou is here. how does he look this morning? >> sublet within the studio. the drive for most part is looking good. bay bridge metering lights are on.
