the day when we can go back to just having a celebration of athletic achievement and celebrate americans for their achievement, their good deeds. now to medicare and social security that may run out of money sooner than predicted. that's according to a new federal report. government trustees for medicare the program may deplooete its funds by 2026. that's three years earlier than predicted last year. it is putting tens of millions of older americans who rely on it at risk. the trustees also warn that social security will dip into its trust fund for the first time since 1982. and by 2034, its reserves will be depleted as well. nbc's tracie potts joins us live from washington, d.c. to explain. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, frances, good morning. it's long been feared here in washington that this would happen with more baby boomers drawing out of social security and medicare and fewer younger workers contributing. this is the first trustees

reported since the $1.5 trillion tax cuts put in place by republicans and president trump. what it says is medicare will run out of funds in eight years. that's three years earlier than predicted. and according to t trustees, that's because there are lower payroll tax fower wages. hospitals are spending more and insurance companies are being paid more by the federal government. as for social security, that hasn't changed. it's running out in 16 years, with taxes covering only 3/4 of social security recipients in the next 75 years. that leaves one in four in jeopardy. what to do about this? that's where washington seems to be stuck. and we're talking 6 million recipients so far. frances? >> all right, tracie, thank you very much. we've been tracking the volcano disaster on hawaii's big island for over a month now, and it's only growing worse. lava from the kilauea volcano
