activity, for that i'll send it off to you, marcus and laura. >> thanks, mike. we'll get you caught up on election coverage shortly but we have breaking news out of san jose, a driver slams into a fire truck as those firefighters are battling a small fire. crews are working to save the people inside that car. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez rushed to the scene and there with the very latest. a lot of activity behind you, kris. >> reporter: the good news here is that the folks in the car are out and headed to the hospital but we have san jose fire here. one of your firefighters nearly in this crash. >> yes, the driver of this fire apparatus is actually out, he's the pumper of the apparatus and walking back to prepare the cones again when the car went past him nearly striking him before it struck the back of the fire apparatus. >> reporter: do you think the drivers saw him and tried to get oust way? >> i don't think the driver saw him at all. my driver saw the car coming and

the officer and firefighter, it was a very close call. we'll continue to follow this for you throughout themorning. , bay." >> active morning there. thanks, kris. back to our election cerage this moing. first, some stunning changes overnight in the race for san francisco mayor. while you were sleeping mark leno is now ahead of london breed. if you look at the graphic right here, it's so close that they are virtually tied. >> "today in the bay's" thom jenson, they are closen this race, thom. >> reporter: very close, it is too early to call this race because this was a special election so a little bit different after the sudden death of mayor ed lee in december after he had a heart attack. this is a ranked choice system. are distributed with the first place votes and second place vote going to the candidates and then the third place finisher would then leave

the race. that was jane kim and those firsla votes for her would be redistributed. at this point london breed has the most fir place votes. it'setermid though that leno would possibly win because most of the mail-in ballots, tens of thousands coming in late usually go to the progressive candidate. the latest results with just over 1,000 votes difference are razor thin. nbc b area did talk to breed late last night when she had a small lead and she said, she was cautiouslyar returns, it loo very promising but it's not the end result. we're just holding on tight and waiting until the votes are all counted to see what it says. >> reporter: leno does have a long record of public service as all three candidates had public service experience. his dated back more than 20 years where he fought for tenant

early afternoon. and mostly sunny skies looking at all of our highs for today in san jose, up to 69 degrees and 70 today in los gatos. for the eastay in oakland, expect a high of 63 degrees 72 in danville. for the coast, upper 50s there. it is still going to be windy and cool and at times clouds rolling by. palo alto up to 68. outer sunset at 53 degrees and high in napa will reach up to 74 and winds coming in from the west. as you're getting dressed this morning, it is a day for a nice warm jacket at least to start, later on today it will be so comfortable and sunglasses and short sleeves and good day for that. as we go through the forecast. a lot ofre. mid-70s and we'll see the same thing tomorrow but by friday, we get a boost in our temperatures, we'll be up to 84 degrees. it does come down a few degrees

on saturday but that's before we get a really big ramp up in our temperatures, check out early next week. it looks like the heat will stay with us all through next week with 90s for inland areas and san francisco goes from 59 today to low 70s by the end of the weekend. we'll talk more about that but mike says the commute is pretty calm right now. >> so the reporter but 96 for tuesday next week. my goodness. we'll check the hot temperature changes over the next week. we're looking over here, not a lot of change except for right here. peninsula slows slowing northbound 101 towards the one lane open at the construction at university. we're continuing to followthat. i'll leto changes in overnight crews, they should change in next ten minutes. a little slowing southbound 880 and there may be another crew right in and out bnow. the approach through concord and upper east shore freeway moving nicely and we'll look at the richmond and san rafael bridge,

there you have it. thank you very much, chris. it is 4:56. you won't be able to find certain cigarettes in parts of san mateo county. it wasn't on the ballot. the supervisors decided to ban the sale of menthol and flavored tobacco products. this would be for unincorporated parts of the county. county leaders unanimously passed the ordinance last night. it came on the same day voters in san francisco through their support behind a similar ban. >> you can get a glimpse of the future of the bay area. we talked about before the bay area action plan, this is a push to lower the cospurt o economic and protect the climate. theio pnning committee is meeting at the bay area metro nt san fr> comingp nexn "today the bay," pleasant weather across the bay area today. >> it will be much cooler than normal with san jose looking at the nice clear start this morning. we'll see a few clouds moving in and our willow glenn temperatures show we'll be at 55 degrees at 8:00.
