6:00 am
morning drive. you'll probably have to turn on the heater. here's a live look outside in fremont with low 50s as you get ready to step out. and that morning drive through the east bay continues to be partly to mostly cloudy skies and then as we go through early afternoon, a lot of sunshine, only upper 60s. highs reach in the mid-70s for concord and antioch as well as the north bay. san francisco still going to be cool but we've got a big warm-up in the forecast. i'll have more on that in a few minutes and mike tracking a crash in san jose. >> i'm tracking the rest of the bay commute as well but the problem is in san jose wbecause we only have the metering lights on at the bay bridge. the biggest backup north 101 jams up now coming up past tully where a motorcycle crash -- motorcycle has been removed and minor injuries i'm happy to report. a big backup as you approach the scene of the crash. you still blocks multiple lanes. this is compounding another issue or compounded by another
6:01 am
issue depending on the way you look at it. a lot of folks bail out is is tradition and trying to get towards 87 where we see a build. along that stretch, we have another crash where kris sanchez is reporting. i'll hand it back to you for what's brolocking that portion. >> it is breaking news we've been following since we came on air at :30 this morning. a car actually slammed into a fire truck that was on a car barely missing a firefighter. he was working nearby to put out a fire. kris sanchez joins us live off of capitol expressway. we're learning i understand kris that a similar incident happened in the past month? >> reporter: yeah, they tell us it's pretty rare but that twice in the last month this has happened. we'll show you the scene. firefighters are doing the glamorous work of cleaning things up. you see the car that smashed into the fire engine. but it was a very dramatic scene as firefighters tried to free the driver that hit their rig
6:02 am
and nearly hit one of their own. as three firefighters were down around enbankment fighting a grass fire, another firefighter, the driver of the rig wasry arranging the hazard cones in the roadway when he saw that oncoming car coming right at him. you can see the impact the driver hit that rig with such force his black sedan was nearly buried under the fire truck up to the windshield. >> i don't think the driver saw him at all. my driver actually saw the car coming and was able to dive out of the way before that car struck our vehicle. >> diving, that's pretty close. >> that's very close, yes, he was nearly injured. >> now, the deputy chief told us this is the second time this month that a driver hit a fire truck responding to a fire. this time it was from behind. the last time it was from the front. san jose police are now investigating why that driver failed to see the rig whether there were drugs or alcohol as a factor or perhaps if the driver fell asleep. that driver had to be cut out of
6:03 am
his vehicle and now at the hospital. no doubt san jose police officers are waiting to talk with him as soon as he's cleared by the doctor. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> that could have been very frightening. thank you very much. >> now to decision 2018 this morning. we continue with that as though votes are still being tallied for races across the state and the bay area. we've already seen some big changes overnight. >> one race we're following closely, that race for san francisco mayor. london breed was winning for most of the day and into the night. but overnight, this is how things can change, mark leno surpassed her. the race extremely close, in fact, so close, our graphics are rounding it out to a tie. leno slightly ahead of breed. >> "today in the bay's" thom n jensen is live to explain how the election works and when we could find out who officially won. good morning, thom. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. some people were already
6:04 am
projecting that leno would win because there are tens of thousands of mail-in ballots still out there and normally those ballots go to the more progressive candidate and that would be leno here. but this was also a quickly organized ee lerks leks as were the campaigns tha the candidates put together after ed lee's death in december. it's also ranked choice system though voters choose the first and second picks because there were three candidates here. a lot of different dynamics still at play. nbc bay area did talk to breed la late last night when she had the small lead tied right now. she said she was optimistic at that time but not ready to make a prediction. >> oh, no, we -- it is not -- i don't think it's the right time at this time. we need to make sure that more of the returns come in and as they return it, as they come in, we'll get to that point but not
6:05 am
right now. >> reporter: leno, breed and supervisor jane kim all have histories of public service. leno dating back 20 years. culminating in the state senate. those mail-in ballots could continue to come in as late until friday. so we'll keep you up to date with the changes in those tallies as they come in over the next couple of days. we're live in san francisco, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> 6:05 in the governor's race, gavin newsom coming out on top with more than 30% of the vote. he'll face republican john cox in november. cox claimed i kamd in second place with more than 25% of the vote. cox who was backed by president trump didn't waste any time last night going after newsom and the democrats. >> wasn't donald trump who made california the highest taxed state in the country, it was gaffe vib newsom and the democrats. >> in the meantime, newsom told
6:06 am
his supporters in san francisco that he's fighting for equality. >> a state where we don't criminalize diversity. we celebrate diversity. a state where we don't obstruct justice, we demand justice for everybody. where we don't regulate a woman's body more than we regulate assault weapons out on our streets. and where we invest in children jeff sessions, invest in children where we don't tear them from the loving arms of their mothers and their fathers. >> former l.a. mayor antonio villaraigosa finished third with nearly 14% of the vote. now to the bridge toll measure. regional measure 3. at this hour, seven out of nine counties have yoeted yes to increase the tolls. a regional measure 3 money will come from the $3 increase in
6:07 am
stages starting next year and ending in 2025. the tolls on bay bridges could go up as high as $9 during the peak commute hours. contra costa and solano overwhelmingly rejected the measure. we spoke to some of those voter overnight about the results. >> i'm not surprised. i didn't vote for it. i voted no. we just raised taxes essentially with taxing the bond. so i wasn't for raising them again. >> the toll increases are expected to raise more than $4 billion over 25 years. that money would be used to pay for transit projects all designed to alleviate the bay area's traffic crisis. we've got even more election coverage for you on our website right now. you can see how all of the races and measures did in your county. you can head to nbcbayarea.com. click on the red banner at the top of the home page. >> at 6:07. to other news we're covering this morning. a frighten and grizzly crime in
