in france while filming an episode of his cnn show, parts unknown. his celebrity transcended the worlds of food, books and television. leaving behind a legacy. he was a modern day renaissance man. anthony bourdain, chef, tv host and storyteller. >> it's nice to know who we're talking about when we talk about places with really complex problems. some knowledge of who people are when they're sitting at home with their family eating. >> the news of his apparent suicide breaking this morning on cnn. >> best selling author, award winning host of parts unknown, and our friend, anthony bourdain has died. >> he burst onto the culinary scene with the release of his book kitchen confidential. it detailed bourdain's personal struggles with drug addiction.

she wanted to go. she can't fly for one month. the doctors say. she had a big operation, that was close to a four hour operation. >> reporter: all of it comes as the president is meeting face to face with leaders who have traditionally been friendly american allies. but this year, there will be unprecedented tensions after mr. trump imposed harsh new taxes on imports from their countries. the president deepening those rifts this morning by saying that russia should be invited back in. >> i would recommend -- it's up to them. but russia should be in the meeting. it should be a part of it. you know, whether you like it or not -- and it may not be politically correct -- but we have a world to run. and the g-7, which used to be the g-8 they threw russia out. they should let russia come back in. >> reporter: that's an idea that is sure to get a lot of attention.

president trump set to meet with the prime minister of canada as well as the president of france. the two leaders, the bromance, seems to have ended. for his part, president trump heads to singapore tomorrow. willie and savannah? >> quite a kickoff. thank you. also this morning, we are learning more about a mysterious illness striking american diplomats in china. nbc's andrea mitchell joins us. >> reporter: the state department has evacuated some americans from china. today issuing an expanded health alert for all of china. u.s. officials fear they're the victims of targeted sound wave attacks. in an e-mail, an american diplomat tells nbc news he first noticed the unexplained symptoms

last year. working at this u.s. consulate in china. he started hearing strange noises and getting headaches. now, he is one of several american staff and families the state department has evacuated. a health alert cites vague and abnormal sensations of sound and pressure. american diplomats now targeted in two countries. officials say the incidents in china appear to be the same syndrome that first struck 24 americans at the u.s. embassy in havana last year. where some suffered systems that were similar to brain injury. u.s. officials speculated cuba or russia could be behind the attacks in havana. china is also under suspicion. these latest attacks coming less than a week before president trump's nuclear summit with north korea. a close china ally. china may not have a seat at the negotiating table, u.s.

officials tell nbc news they expect the chinese to spy on the historic meeting. sources say china could use a range of techniques, from recruiting waiters and other staff to become informants, to deploying sophisticated electronic surveillance at summit meeting sites. last year, a top u.s. official working in china repeatedly had trouble with his hotel key card. when he brought it back to the u.s., security personnel found a microphone embedded side. raising concerns that next week's singapore summit could become a high stakes spy versus spy battleground. former officials tell nbc news that china poses the most sophisticated counterintelligence threat to the u.s. of any country. american diplomats heading to singapore will be taking unprecedented defensive measures to guard against high tech surveillance at the summit. >> andrea, thank you. let's turn to arizona where five police officers are on leave for repeatedly punching a

man during an encounter caught on camera. now we're getting a clearer picture of what happened. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is following this story. >> reporter: officers took down a 33-year-old robert johnson with a flurry of punches. as he speaks out for the first time, new audio reveals what was said as the incident was unfolding. >> watch this arm, right here. get his right arm. >> i got it. i'm on you. >> you don't need to put all that force on me. >> reporter: for the first time we can hear the heated exchange between robert johnson and the mesa arizona police officers who took him down outside an apartment. it started when police say johnson, the friend of a man who officers were questioning after a domestic violence call said he had a knife and refused to sit down.

police say a knife was never recovered. seconds later the officers unloaded several punches. >> does it feel good putting your hands on me while i'm subdued? i just want things to be -- i want mesa to be held accountable for what they have done. >> reporter: the five officers involved, now on leave. the audio reveals they believe johnson was spitting on them as they slammed his head into an elevator door. >> don't you dare to -- you're trying to spit on me. >> reporter: the police chief called an early look at the video troubling. >> at first glance it looks like a mistake. it doesn't look like. it's our job to collectively investigate and find the answers to this. >> reporter: the mesa police

association which represents the officers criticized the department for releasing the video without audio earlier this week. saying it didn't provide full context. johnson's attorney has seen enough. >> he was brutally attacked. no man, woman, child, no one should face the brutal attacks that mr. johnson faced that day. >> reporter: a takedown caught on tape. now it's the police who are under investigation. the police chief says that investigation now taken on by a different department could take some time to complete. meantime, overnight mesa police also released this body camera footage taken last month. it shows the arrest of two teens, one who may have been armed. two officers in this case are also on administrative leave. yet another investigation underway. savannah and willie, back to you. >> miguel, i mean, i understand there's a link between the officers in both of these cases you've been talking about? >> reporter: yeah, early reports

indicate that these members, these officers were members of the same squad, the same unit. there were different officers that are all being investigated. seven in total. the police chief says he'll have a press conference later on today to clarify what is going on in mesa, arizona. >> all right, thank you very much. meanwhile, more than 1,600 people arrested at the u.s./mexico border are being transferred to federal prisons in california, texas, oregon, arizona, and washington state. the detainees include parents who have been separated from their children. five prisons will temporarily hold detainees who are awaiting court hearings. under the obama administration, some were allowed to live in the u.s. while they were waiting for their hearings.

a 59-year-old woman was standing within ten yards of a bison. she's listed in good condition. this is the second bison related injury at yellowstone this year. two other park visitors were injured by an elk earlier this week. the park service is urging visitors stay 25 yards away from animals such as bison and elk. >> they're pretty clear about that. when you visit, give them space. let's turn to hockey. we have a stanley cup champion. >> we do, the party is going on strong in washington this morning. the capitals are stanley cup champions for the first time in their history. washington scored twice in the third period. they held on to win. they took the series 4-1. alex ovechkin was named mvp of the playoffs. you see him hoisting the stanley cup. for the first time in his storied career, that game was in vegas. there was a huge watch party in washington. take a look at the crowd outside

years old, and his family at this difficult time. >> it is sad to hear he has passed away, and according to cnn, took his own life. we thought it would be a good time to pause and talk with dr. drew ramsey. he's a clinical psychologist at colombia university. doctor, i'm sure your as shocked as everybody is. we've been reporting on the suicide of kate spade. now, anthony bourdain. what are your thoughts? i mean, i think people -- these are celebrities. you know, nobody knows what is going on in someone's life. but i think people are going to be just so worried and wondering, what should they be looking out for? >> thank you, good morning. this is another horrible tragedy on the heels of the suicide of kate spade. we want to understand that suicide comes with risk factors. the risk factors, the top are depression, alcohol abuse and a previous suicide attempt. this isn't something that comes

out of nowhere. when we're looking at our individuals and our lives, families and friends, those are really -- the first warning signs. and then, looking at changes in symptoms. that's really what we try to focus on to keep people safe. >> i guess you really don't know what kind of pain people are carrying around with them. i'm sure family members, people are watching this, wondering in their own circles, things that they should do, whether you should reach out to someone and have a conversation or what should you do? >> yes, yes. for sure. always reach out. silence is really often the smoking gun in suicide. this is not a word that we should ever worry about saying. we always want to talk and we want people to ask specifically, are you having thoughts of killing yourself? are you having thoughts of taking dotake ing your own life. those are the questions they train us in skpsychiatry.

there's more tragedies but more talking is not going to hurt. more talking is just going to help. >> dr. ramsey, i believe there were new national suicide numbers that recently came out. are we experiencing an uptick? or is it just because these are two high-profile people that have passed recently. >> we are experiencing a mental health epidemic in america. suicide rates are up according to the cdc. they're going up in every population. if you look at suicide, it is the number three killer of our youth in america. 45,000 suicides last year. there's been a significant increase. some of this is more aware. some of this is more people getting into treatment. but it is a trend that we're incredibly concerned about. what we do know is there's amazing resources for individuals and families who are struggling with suicidal thoughts or suicidal behaviors.
