d mornin phillip mena. >> great being with you. i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news out of singapore. president trump and north korean leader kim jong-un are both in the country. less than 24 hours away from their historic summit, it marks the first time the sitting u.s. president will meet with the north korean leader. the main focus of that high stakes meeting, the denuclearization of the korn peninsula. president trump suggesting over the weekend that the summit could be the only opportunity to work out a deal. >> it's a one-time shot, and i think it's going tok well. i think very quickly i'll know whether or not something good is going to happen. and if i think it won't happen, i'm not going to waste my time. i don't want to waste his time. >> but this morning president

trump's first official meeting of the trip is not with kim, but with singapore's prime minister, li, a day after kim's meeting with the prime minister. elsewhere u.s. and north korean officials sitting down ahead of talks at the summit. secretary of state mike pompeo tweeting these photos calling the meeting substantive and detailed. >> let's get to peter alexander in singapore, janice mackie frayer in seoul, south korea, and tracie potts on capitol hill all bringing us full coverage at the summit. we begin with peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> reporter: frances, good morning to you. nbc news has confirmed president trump and kim jong-un will meet one on one to begin tomorrow's summit. that information from multiple senior white house officials here in singapore. no guidanc that one on one face to face will go. it is likely at some point they will be joined by other officials including the

secretary of state mike pompeo who you know visited with kim jong-un on two separate occasions in advance of the summit to try to put those preparations in place. as you noted, pompeohort timego described a short of pregame over this day between u.s. officials and north koreans as substantive and detailed. in a statement he also said the president is well prepared for tomorrow's engagement with chairman kim. the u.s. position remains clear and unchanged. president trump saying that the meeting he hopes will be very interesting, that it could work out very nicely. for the president, it's not clear what he will take away from this meeting. he's been trying to lower expectations about the potential for denuclearization. but for chairman kim, it is respectability on the world stage, sharing that stage with president trump. back to you. >> peter alexander for us, peter, thank you. >> let's go now to janice mackie frayer in seoul. janice, how is the summit being perceived in south korea?

>> reporter: south korea realizes what's at stake with this summit perhaps nobody more than moon jae-in. he met with kim jong-un in april and now the groundwork for the meeting with presint trump. he's balancing loyalties to both the u.s. and to north korea and domestically there is a lot at stake. he has local elections next week that his party hopes to do well in. and he is still struggling to get his april agreement with kim ratified by his own legislature. so, there is a bit of nervousness about what appears to be a lack of readiness for this summit. we know both sides are still meeting to come up with a joint statement. an official told me here when moon went into his meeting with kim, they had an agreement that was 90% there, but they needed to negotiate the word complete in front of denuclearization. arguably the issues with the u.s. are bigger to try to bridge into this having alienated long-time allies whereas kim jong-un has

spent the last few months seeking them out and he has found them in south korea, china, and russia, all taking concrete steps towards building economic ties with north korea. phillip? >> janice, thank you. >> and while the historic meeting is yet to begin back on capitol hill lawmakers are already demanding any negotiated deal be vetted by congress. nbc's tracie potts brings us more. tracie, good morning. >> francis, phillip, good morning. congress may get a say. secretary of state mike pompeo telling washington whatever comes out of the summit they are going to run through congress, that lawmakers here will have a chance to approve that, that they have been preparing for that for months, and the idea here is to give north korea some confidence that whatever they come up with, the united states will honor. if it's a formal treaty, that takes a two-thirds vote from the senate which means they'll have to get some democrats on board. but we are months away from that. for now, lawmakers are wondering

what will come out of this summit and what their role will be. >> there are three outcomes here. peace where we have a win/win solution. military force where we devastate the north korean regime and sp their program by force. or to capitulate like we've done in the past and donald trump is not going to capitulate, so there's really only two options. peace or war. >> reporter: but does the public have any faith in this summit? our latest nbc "wall street journal" poll shows 72% of americans have a negative view of kim jong-un. back to you. >> we will see the outcome when that summit meeting happen. tracie, thank you. >> leading the news, while the historic north korean summit may be imminent it's a budding trade war that is preoccupying president trump's mind as he continued his fight against members of the g7, particularly canada, calling free trade fool's trade and name checking canadian prime minister justin trudeau in twitter posts once more. this follows a stunning reversal
