night. the video here, neighbors called police after they say the suspect pointed a gun at them. what you can see pretty clearly in this photo on the screen. he also made racial slurs. the whole thing ended after about eight hours. our nbc bay area crew was on the air when police made the arrest a little after 11:00 last night. we talked with that neighbor who earlier took that photo. >> he had like this to intimidate us. it was kind of scary. >> police evacuated the neighborhood until the standoff ended and neighbors say the suspect had only lived there for a few weeks. they didn't quite know him at that point. authorities have not identified him by name. >> special agents from travis air force base helped bring a 35 year mystery to an end. over the weekend they arrested a man who they say deserted the air force 35 years ago. william howard hughes junior

marriott is now in talks with city leaders on a hotel in the high land office development. that proposal calls for a five story 175 room building. that entire projects expected to include more than 1 million square feet of office and retail space. >> summer is here almost as the road trip season that you're planning -- well, it might be a little bit more expensive. analysts say we arnt seeing a drop in oil price and impact at the pump. the national average is $3.01 but gas is more expensive around here. the average price in the bay area 3.84. it is $3.75 in san jose. all right, we're used to hearing about firefigers rescuing cats from trees but what about a bear? >> oh, that's a bear? >> look at that right there. this is in northern michigan, that's the fire department there got a call of a bear that could not get down from the tree. rescuers had to tranquilize the bear and slowly lowering it to

showing how hot it's going to get over the next couple of days a look at walnut creek and our temperature trend will be in the upper 60s by 9:00 and then at noon it's 80 degrees. if you're going to the park to enjoy your lunch, you might just want to sit somewhere in the shade. it will be in the mid-80s as we go into the afternoon. let's check out the high temperatures for today. morgan hill up to 88 degrees and loss gatos saying a high of 86 today. 87 in danville and in hayward, 79 degrees. it will be in the mid-60s in half moon bay while san mateo reaching 74 degrees. san francisco some upper 60s to low 70s there. embarcadero at 72 and 90 today in santa rosa. and those light winds coming in. at 10 to 15 miles per hour. we're all clear as we get a look at what's happening across the region. rain staying well to the north as that high pressure that's building here keeps the rain away but there's a hurricane in the pacific while we do have this weakening tropical storm

here that was the a name storm and now we have bud that's a category three hurricane. as we continue to watch this over the next few days, if you have travel plans to cabo, you'll have to keep an eye on this one. it looks to head right in that direction and look at the time line, that's friday morning. we could see it coming in and around cabo as a tropical storm. here we're going to keep the dry weather and hot temperatures over the next few days. 95 degrees tomorrow. 93 degrees inland on wednesday and then we get that cooldown. 80 for the rest of the week. n francisco mid-70s tomorrow then mid-60s through the weekend. heading over to mike, you have an early backup at the bay bridge. >> i was showing folks the san mateo bridge a couple of minutes ago, i saw this backup forming and it's been gradual but study over the last few minutes. this is earlier than we typically see this much traffic or earlier than we see after the schools have let out. that's a problem i guess. my kids are still in school but

is 5:23. happening today, a man who police say stole guns and threatened police officers is scheduled to appear in court. you see here dustin hamilton has not yet entered a plea. on april san francisco police arrested him after they say that he stole guns from his parents home in san jose. they say he also left a manifesto threatening to kill as many people as possible. >> only one woman is being

questioned in cleveland right now after a deadly home explosion. you can see right there from the video that blast reduced that home to rubble. one woman died and a man was seriously injured in that explosion. that fire damaged four neighbors homes and firefighters say gas levels appear to be normal before the explosion, which happened yesterday afternoon. authorities are not yet saying why they took the woman into custody. >> 5:24 now, today a new skyscraper opens atew york's world trade center. it is the third building at the site where the twin towers once stood. it has been the subject of legal disputes for years and some 9/11 victims families want the site preserved as a memorial. for some kids, summer meebz going hungry without the school cafeteria as an option. in contra costa county ks the library system is looking to fill the gap.

police activity and cars there in the background. if this is happening in orlando, florida, four children are being held hostage inside an apartment complex. this started late last night but continues at this hour this video is of the scene we just t into the newsroom. the kids being held hostage are the ages of 1, 7, 10 and 12. investigators are saying this started as a domestic dispute. negotiations with that shooter are under way right now. also, we want to tell you about an officer was shot here. these are live pictures at the hospital where that officer is being treated. police say that the injured officer got out of surgery and those injuries are significant. we will continue to follow this breaking news and bring you the latest as soon as we get it here on "today in the bay." >> it is coming up on 5:32. breaking news here at home from overnight as well and this is a bizarre story. a san jose police officer is in the hospital after an unusual

series of events. the air bag on her patrol car went off but she wasn't even in the cash. >> bob redell is live at police headquarters there. this is a bizarre situation. break down to us kind of how all of it happened. >> reporter: well, this happene. city of san jose police officer was sitting in her squad car, the north garage at san fernando and 9th and app paperwork when air bags deployed. take a look at the video. it appears it was the driver and passenger side air bags, not the air bags in the steering wheel in the dash but on the side. that's what it appears from the video we're showing you right now. there were no cars parked by or any indication that her car coided with another vehicle. it appears this was some sort of malfunction while the officer was sitting in the squadcar. she was taken to the hospital

and our understanding is that she was taken just as a precautionary measure and's going to be okay. reporting live here outside san jose policeob redell, "today in the bay." >> we want to tell you about investigators still trying to sort out a wild incident they say included a kidnapping and ended in the deadly crash. i want to walk you through all of this. right now look at this video of that fiery crash this is shot by witnesses and police say a man and woman were in that car that's on fire. and sadly the woman died and the man is in custody. that car crashed after a high speed chase and police say that the pair had kidnapped a woman in san francisco and then put her in the trunk of that car. that woman had already escaped by the time that chase started and witnesses who saw that -- shot some of that video, talked about police trying to put out that fire. >> then the car was burning more, then she said that like we

need to take these people out and help them out. then she start panicking and ask help -- bystanders to help her out. >> police s are not identifying the suspects or whether they knew the woman was kidnapped. on hawaii's big island this morning, the kilauea volcano is spewing love va and been going on for 4 days. the latest happened yesterday morning. kilauea is the most destructive volcano in the united states since mt. saint helens blew in 1980. still though, fortunately no deaths but more than 600 homes are gone. more earthquakes are coming witr in colorado where a wildfire is growing spanning nearly 16,000 acres in the southwestern part of the state near the border with new mexico. more than 1300 people are under evacuation orders and another 1,000 are on stand by. this headline might wake you

. >> all right, guys we're looking over here and just to move the cameras around, the reason we saw slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza. there was a report of a crash over at the treasure island area. i lined up wrong camera even though i turned it. that's what's going on why we had the early backup forming. as we look at the traffic flow, it's smooth getting over towards treasure island but there's no problem at the maze or coming up from oakland. the problem is coming from the upper east shore freeway with other crashes i'm tracking and that's westbound 80orou get to central and maybe blocking one lane, mild slowing shows up. the two areas a the problems. that will be an issue for contra costa and folks from highway 4 slow as well. walnut creek interchange down towards 580 and 24 and that will be a smoother drive towards the maze anyway but both be affected by the crash reported on treasure island area for west 80. we'll wait until a crew gets there and give an update. the rest of the bay is moving smoothly and that's good news to

an area of high pressure that's going to keep our air nice and clear but also very hot. fighting back that onshore flow. the rain stays well to the north of the state and farther to the south there's a hurricane near puerto vallarta, we have a weakening tropical storm. now we're on the b named storm. for the next couple of days, hurricane bud is expected to weaken into a tropical storm as it moves towards cabo. head's up if you've got travel plans for ca you'll have to keep this tropical system that may affect your travel plans. to ha hot start to the week with the land areas reaching in the mid-90s. still low 90s on wednesday and the rest of the week will bring it back to the '80s. then for san francisco, some low to mid-70s from today threw

wednesday and then 60s the rest of the week. as we head over to mike, you're tracking a couple of crashes. >> just a couple of this going on. overall your commute shows a pretty easy drive. building a bit for san jose. you're looking at the little slowing for hayward as well. those are typical patterns and crash here at san pablo is off to the shoulder and maybe a second crash that happened in the area also on the shoulder. that distraction is probably causing a little slowing. the volume builds a tad bit but the carquinez moving smoothly towards contra costa county. out of the area of oakland and across towards the bay bridge, that treasure island tunnel issued a disabled vehicle, sounds like everything is clear from the lane. one more report and sort of show the source of the early slowing that was there anyway. getting into the maze it's a major problem and that's great news. we're looking at you can see the traffic flowing smoothly. it was backing up right around here at the end getting to the tower and towards treasure island. it looks it movingother now. i think the lanes are clear but
