short time on the g7 is very much on his mind. he ripped off a series of tweets overnight, critical of some of the u.s.'s closest friends. we have complete coverage, we'll begin with peter alexander in singapore this morning. hi, peter. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. that meeting will begin just 11 hours from now and within the last hour or so, the white house has revealed new details about how it will go down. it will begin with president trump and kim jong-un alone in the room, just the two men and their translators before they invite in some other officials, among them the secretary of state mike pompeo. then he'll follow up with a working lunch. so why is the president leaving so soon? tomorrow the white house says it's because the on going talks between the two sides have been progressing much more quickly than they expected. but what is still unclear, what, if anything, they've agreed to. >> reporter: this morning secretary of state mike pompeo focussed on the next 24 hours. >> president trump is going into this meeting with confidence,

contentious visit with america's oldest al lice, first agreeing to sign a joint economic pledge, then abruptly pulling out by tweet after taking off. attacking canadian prime minister justin trudeau as very dishonest and weak after trudeau in measured remarks called new u.s. tariffs on steel and aluminum insulting and vowed to retaliate. >> canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around. >> reporter: the president mocking trudeau again monday. tweeting, justin acts hurt when called out. mr. trump's advisers slamming the prime minister, call his remarks a betrayal. >> he really stabbed us in the back. >> there's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with president donald j. trump. >> reporter: but trudeau's office says the prime minister said nothing he's said before, in public and private conversations with the president. mr. trump's sudden reversal, stunning allies. germany responding with its own tariffs.

french president macron, weeks ago, hand in hand with mr. trump, now accusing him of incoherence and inconsistency. also alarmed, senator john mccain, tweeting his own message to foreign leaders. americans stand with you, even if the president doesn't. the white house is framing the president's angry reaction as strategic positioning before sitting down with kim jong-un. >> he is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with north korea. nor should he >> this was about north korea? >> of course it was, in large part. >> let's take one more look at this picture that's making waves around the world with many saying it captures this global moment. president trump facing off against his allies in increasingly isolated. now remember, this all came after the president called for russia to be reinstated into what was formerly the g8. allies balked but vladimir putin welcomed the president's statements. savannah?

>> let's bring in former energy secretary u.n. ambassador on. he has travelled to north korea eight times, secured the release of three americans in the past and also has met directly with kim jong-un's father also opened communications with the current regime to secure the release of otto warmbier. good to have you. we have your whole resume in there. you really are the perfect person to talk to because you actually negotiated with north koreans. what should the president expect? >> well, first, he should take kim jong-un aside that north koreans don't negotiate across negotiating tables. he should expect kim jong-un to be focussed, relentless, well prepared. and what the north koreans never do is they never say yes. if you make a proposal to them, they don't compromise. they don't think like we do. they try to outlast you. so, i think the president needs to substantively on the nuclear issue, on the missile issue, on the human rights issues, on the

normalization issues be very, very focussed and try to pinpoint them because the north koreans try to slip away from most of their agreements. >> you just said that the north koreans were shrewd, very prepared. the president has said for him it's more about his own touch and feel. what do you think of that? does that concern you or do you think actually that might work? >> well, it concerns me because, you know, as a former diplomat, you have to be totally prepared. you have to know the issues. you have to listen to your secretary of state, your adviser. president doesn't seem to do that a lot. my worry is that the president is going to let kim jong-un slip away not focus on timelines. i think for the denuclearization issue, the most important thing is verification. finding ways to make sure that the north koreans comply with their agreements, that they discuss their inventory, disclose it, where is all the nuclear missiles. >> well, that's the thing because as you know better than

anyone else, we've made deals before with the north koreans and they cheated. so how do you make sure you're not getting that situation again? >> well, one of the problems in the past deals is that we didn't have enough inspectors. we have to get inspectors out there. we have to get them to disclose where their missile and nuclear sites are. we have to find ways to make sure that their timelines. this agreement may be two to three years, but most importantly verification, inspectors, timeline. >> bottom line, do you think this was a good move for the president to meet face to face with kim jong-un? i mean n some sense it's a freeby because that's something they've wanted, just the meeting alone, the optics alone. on the other hand, all the old diplomacy that didn't work in the past, so where do you come down on it? >> well, i come down supporting the president. i want him to succeed, but i worry. in the past, the north koreans have always wanted a meeting with the president of the united states. they got it. so we made a major concession. now it's up to them to make

concessions. i just hope the president doesn't forget about human rights issues, about issues relating to our soldiers, our remains of our soldiers from the korean war, bring them home to their families. help the japanese with the abduction issue, but also do something about the north korean people. many live in a goo lag. also normalize relations. set up separate embassies. it's good for countries to talk together. hotlines, normalization, everything is focussed on the nuclear issue. that's the most important issue. the north koreans have to find ways to destroy their nuclear weapons, their missiles, set up a schedule for that to happen. it's a big risk gamble, but it's worth it. but i'm worried. i worry. >> all right. well, you'll probably be worrying for the next 12 to 15 hours or longer. former ambassador bill richardson, thank you very much. we appreciate it. severe weather parts of east coast hit with flooding rain overnight. al is here with the latest on

all that. hey, al. good morning. >> thanks so much. you can see, this is philadelphia. and about two to three, maybe even four to five inches of rain falling in several hours and that created a real mess. rescue teams had to rescue folks in high water. we always tell you, turn around. don't drown. and we have more of this on tap for today. in fact, flood watches around the del mar va peninsula, on into southern new jersey. more strong storms firing their way through as we put the radar into motion and show you what we expect during the day today, this frontal dip down over virginia it will start to dry out today, but we will also watch some of this moisture reform again tomorrow as it moves through to the south. rain fall amounts anywhere from about a quarter to a half an inch, but locally could be upwards of another inch or so oversaturated ground, guys, that could cause more problems. back to you. >> al, thank you. now to florida where investigators are looking into a tragic alligator attack. a woman was killed there while

she was out walking her dogs. nbc's kerry sanders has that story this morning. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, savannah. this morning the park here where the attack took place remains closed. it's unclear when officials will reopen it. there's a saying in florida that in every body of water just assume that there is an alligator. sadly in this case, that was true. >> reporter: this morning, the park where a south florida woman was killed by a vicious alligator attack was locked shut. 47-year-old woman's death is a tragedy. there had been warnings to be aware of gators in the area. >> there have been alligators in the area. you have to be careful. >> just days before a 6 foot gator was caught near a neighbor's front door, a notice from the homeowner's association warning exercise caution with our families and pets. mindful that alligators, snakes and other wildlife may be in the area, according to the south florida sun sentinel.

it's not known if she saw that notice. >> when i sit at the pavilion, especially the one in where the lake is, i tell people, i say, whether you know there's a gator or not, there's a gator in here. >> reporter: trappers caught a 12 1/2 foot alligator on friday. inside officials of the florida wildlife conservation found an arm. according to the sun sentinel, a tattoo identified it as the woman's. the rest of her body was discovered later that day. in the last ten years there have been 75 major bite incidents in florida. three fatalities, not counting this one. almost two years ago, 2-year-old lane graves was killed when an alligator attacked him at disney world. her family and friends are in shock. >> i don't believe it. i just can't believe it. >> following that attack at disney world, they put up a protective fence around the lake to separate people from the alligators. it's unclear what officials plan

opening up. >> this was the greatest show. >> reporter: just days after her son's tragic death. in a phone interview with "today," gladys bourdain said she heard from her son on mother's day, telling us, there was never any sign that something was wrong. heartbroken by his death by suicide, she described him as feisty and talented. adding, he should be remembered as a lover of people of all kinds. french police tell nbc news, bourdain was found unresponsive at his room at the chambard hotel. the star was in france shooting an episode of his series, "parts unknown." just days before his death, bourdain was active on social media. posting videos and instagraming his meals in the french countryside. "the new york times" reports bourdain skipped dinner thursday night and didn't show up for breakfast the next morning. we thought it was strange. his friend was waiting at breakfast and waiting and

>> reporter: good morning to you. we simply don't know enough about kim jong-un. president trump is walking into the unknown. and what emerges from our exclusive interviews is a deeply complex character. smiling, ruthless, mysterious, who is kim jong-un? this former high school teacher's experience, may hold crucial lessons for president trump. 20 years ago, his student, he believes, was the future leader of north korea. >> his name was un. and he started school here in the seventh class. he was about 14 years old. >> reporter: in his first english-language interview, he says he taught un sports, math and german at this school. he was his home room teacher. >> he was a good student. but he wasn't extraordinary. >> reporter: but he says kim jong-un will likely understand

english. so, you think he would have at least learned basic french and english and german. >> you have to. you have to. >> reporter: it was 1998, when we believe he was in switzerland. intrigue surrounds his life here. it's thought kim jong-un spent many years in europe. for a while, it's said he lived in an apartment here with his aunt and uncle. while we may know little of him, to underestimate his knowledge of the west might be a mistake. a swiss investigative journalist on a fellowship at stanford universi university, believes he uncovered the visa application. >> here, you see kim jong-un, kim jong-chol and his younger sister. and the date of birth is consistent with kim jong-un's age. >> reporter: michele has a photo

of his former student. >> i took a picture of every student. >> reporter: nbc news sent that picture for analysis. >> the nose, the mouth and two features of the ears line up, giving us the strong likelihood this is kim jong-un. >> reporter: his aunt and uncle defected to the u.s., where they are in hiding. michele remembers a boy with limited friendships but loving basketball. >> when we played basketball together and doing sports, he always looked like a pro. in his nba clothes. and the nikes, the good ones. the air. that was the time for shaquille o'neal and michael jordan. >> reporter: and he could take a joke. >> what i said to him was, hey, you look already like a pro. but there is still a way to go. to play like a pro.

>> reporter: you teased the leader of north korea, the future leader of north korea. >> yeah. for me, i wasn't teasing the leader of north korea. i was teasing un pak. >> reporter: the school will not confirm his attendance. but from august 1998 to fall 2000, a north korean teenager was at our school. he left on short notice. he was well-integrated. his hobby was basketball. his next decade is shrouded in more secrecy. but a distant cousin, a former ally of the ruling family, now a defector, thinks he has some clues. his father was the one that influenced him the most, he says. he saw absolute obedience, kneeling in front of his father. now, kim jong-un is forcing all the officials to do exactly the same. the world learned the name kim jong-un on the death of his father in 2011. soon president trump will sit

kaling. she was returning to dartmouth college to deliver this year's commencement speech. she had many jokes but also a serious piece of advice. >> after my daughter was born in december, i remember bringing her home and being in my house with her for the first time, and thinking, huh. according to movies and tv, this is the time when my mother and spouse are supposed to be here, sharing this experience with me. and i looked around and i had neither. and for a moment, it was kind of scary. like, can i do this by myself? and then, that feeling went away because the reality is, i'm not doing it by myself. i'm surrounded by family and friends who love and support me . so, i just want to tell you guys, don't be scared if you don't do things in the right order or don't do things at all. i didn't think i would have a child before i got married. but it turned out that way and i wouldn't change a thing.

traffic. our mike inouye, i don't know if you have a graphic for that. >> i don't, i have this right here. i'll have graphics for the parade tomorrow. right now, live pictures of this traffic alert over in brisbane. look at the overpass and the overturned truck. the top of it got hooked on the edge and there's a fuel spill. that's the problem. it's the off ramp north 101 at sierra point parkway. let's look at the map. that's a problem. it's closed the off-ramp. that distraction has traffic jammed up from sfo to north of the scene. north 280 clear so you can use that as an option. use 380 to get over there. rest of the bay looking pleasant. >> we have more local news for you in half an hour.

the shocking deaths of iconic fashion designer, kate spade, and globetrotting chef, anthony bourda bourdain, proof that being a celebrity doesn't protect you from the darkness that is mental illness. and it's prompting top stars to share their own struggles on social media. debra messing talking about her battle with depression 15 years ago. she writes, no one knew except my husband and my therapist. i was working hard, making people laugh, doing photo shoots, constantly moving. i disappeared from friends and family. i would say sorry, i've been m.i.a., working nonstop. sara bareilles, also tweeting, i have to tend with this relationship with depression and anxiety for the rest of my life. olivia munn revealing she lived with anxiety and depression most of her life.

she had thoughts of suicide more than a few times before tackling her issues years ago. rob delaney resharing a tumblr post where he cited his struggle with depression. he couldn't eat or sleep and felt pain throughout his entire body, as his mind told him to kill himself. this morning, experts welcoming the conversation. saying stories like these may help raise awareness and remove the stigma of mental illness, possibly saving lives. >> hearing someone else's account is going to validate someone's experience. with depression and anxiety, people feel alone. >> reporter: other stars have spoken out about overcoming troubling times. from dwayne "the rock" johnson -- >> i found that depression, one of the most important things you can realize, is you're not alone. >> reporter: to demi lovato. >> there was a while that my mom was afraid to wake me up in the morning because she didn't know
