5:37 am
of the trees. but that one that is marked marked for another battle tonight in an appeal can be chopped down, the developer though is appealing, wants to take down not only that tree but that grove of five redwoods behind it, the ones that the city said he could not take down. this is a rematch between the two sides and appeal by the developer at the city council meeting tomorrow night at 7:00. the city rolled the owner could remove the one tree because it was in bad health. but denied requests to cut down those five redwoods in the back. tonight, the city will consider another developer's request to chop down or cut down 16 more trees on some rowhouses in the 600 block of walker drive. but neighbors here and there say that they'd like these trees to stay. planters will give their opinion on those trees tonight and again tomorrow night on these trees
5:38 am
but you can expect some loud public hearing or at least a loot of people from the public speaking at this. there has been a lot of contention over this issue. in mountain view, any tree 48 inches around is legally considered a heritage tree. and anyone who removes a heritage tree is supposed to replace it with two more trees. all other trees need to be replaced at a one to one ratio. nbc bay area investigated just how well that program has worked and we learned that more than 850 heritage trees have been cut down over the past four years. they've only been replaced with 776 trees so the mathematics don't seem to be working out there. something that no doubt neighbors will bring up at that public hearing tonight and then the public hearing appeal again scheduled for tomorrow night here in mountain view. we're live in mountain view,
5:39 am
