right now. a very good thursday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. of course we'll get to traffic in, vianey in for mike inouye. we'll get to that in a moment. first kari has us covered with the weather. it's going to be a nice one. >> it is nice, along the coastline, inland areas seeing a nice clear sunrise. as we get a live look outside in san jose as we head out the door, upper 50s in willow glen. normally we're up to 70 degrees. that's where we'll be at early afternoon but we will be heading into the low 80s in some spots. looking at high temperatures today up to 85 degrees in napa and 65 in san francisco, 85 in lirmore a88 today in antioch. let's talk about the weekend. that's in a few minutes. as we head to vianey, she's been tracking some slow spots and a lot of issues, right? >> a lot of issues. let's get to a couple. you can see bay area, a couple

popping up. i do want to get started with this one issue out of concord along southbound 242 right after grant street. looks like a car crash may block lanes. can you see slowing through monument boulevard. i would say don't even bother getting on monument boulevard on 242, take surface streets and hop on after concord avenue. that's going to be your best route. seeing another issue at appian way. some slowing. hop on after hilltop drive. take surface streets. if not you'll get caught in morning traffic. two issues in the south bay. this one sees delays along southbound 101 after bayshore highway. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks vianey. 6:01, we're following breaking news in the south bay this morning. a motorcyclist killed in an early morning accident. this is on interstate 880. bob redell is live there.

bob, investigators think another vehicle may be involved in this one. >> possibly. good morning to you, marcus. california highway patrol tells us this morning's fatal motorcycle accident near norman mineta international airport might have been a hit-and-run. it happened a couple hundred yards behind me. this was on the coleman avenue on ramp to northbound 880. happening around 1:00 this morning. an officer tells us this motorcyclist was traveling very fast, well over the splimt. they failed to negotiate the turn onto the freeway and crashed into the median on the on ramp. the man, who was wearing helmet and his bicycle, motorbike ended up in the middle of 880. chp believes another vehicle may have hit the man because there are other debris that doesn't match the motorcycle. they aren't sure what killed the motorcyclist, the possible crash or collision with the other vehicle. chp would like to hear from you if you witnessed this accident.

again, it happened after 1:00, northbound 880 at coleman avenue on ramp. this is not far from norman mineta. this was a sig alert, did shut down all lanes. all lanes of 880 reopened this morning, thursday morning, in time for the dmut. reporting live, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the update. >> 6:03, immigration a hot topic especially here in california. people across the country and bay area will rally against trump administration policy which celebrates some undocumented immigrants families. kris sanchez joins us live at san jose city hall where one of the rallies is happening to explain what's going on today. good morning, chris -- kris. hayward city hall, battle cry of families belong together. this is in protest of one of the

trump administration policies that separates children from their parents while they await deportation. this is a look inside one of those detention centers for chin in brownsville, texas. nbc news got a special look. the shelter that 1400 immigrant boys separated from their parents. the children from the ages of 17 down to the age of 10. can you see more of that on the newscast coming up at 7:00. we also have these photos of a detention center. used to be a walmart store. these were provided by the government. there are 100 detention centers and cases are backing up with attorney general's 0 tolerance policy. with congress changing the law allowing families to be separated next week republicans are agreeing to take some action. >> we can come together on the fact that families need to be unified. >> children's, babies are being ripped away from their mother's arms. if that's not psychological torture, i don't know what is.

>> there are 700,000 families waiting for a court date. that number continues to grow. prosecutors are trying to mav the case along. activists will rally across the country, gather here at san jose city hall at 6:00 tonight, also at hayward city hall. you can find more information about those rallies in my twitter feed. by the way, the american academy of pediatric put out a story about the impact these separations can have on immigrant children. can you find that in my twitter feed. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot of anxiety. >> thank you, kris. developing this morning cal osha investigating tragic accident in san francisco where a city worker was killed. she was also the mother of a toddler. yesterday afternoon in diamond heights, a car rolled off of the

back of a tow truck over a ditch with three water department crew members were working. the woman having her car towed said the truck operator had already called about a problem with the towing cables. >> the two guys jumped out of the hole so fast but the woman did not. i'm so sorry to hear that she's gone. >> very sad. the worker who died is 34-year-old lilianna preciado of san bruno. the city says she's one of a few women plumbers on the staff. you have a chance to see former presidential candidate and first lady hillary clinton today. she's in san francisco speaking to a group which backs gun violence reform. today is the 25th anniversary of the gifford law center. gabby gifford is the arizona congresswoman who was hit by gunfire. also today we're waiting for a report from the justice department's internal watchdog. the big question, did the fbi botch its investigation into

hillary clinton's e-mail. the inspectors general report is an 18 month review. its findings will surely revive the debate whether fbi and former director james comey affected the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. 6:07, happening now. look at this. hours from the start of the world cup, live look at the official kickoff. russia is playing saudi arabia this morning. fans are certainly already excited especially here in the bay area. avaya stadium hosting a free watch party for every single game. over in russia, security is really tight across the 11 cities hosting matches. but it's still a party. here is one family. >> excited, running, very nice, very exciting. i'm rooting for everyone. >> apparently sales of tickets to non-russians are lagging because of sanctions and tensions between russia and western countries.

our sister station telemundo 48 is your home for the first game russia and saudi arabia as we mentioned. coverage starts this morning. >> 6:07. in a victory for a group of neighbors on the peninsula fighting to save some trees. mountain view's "parks and recreation" commission has denied a developer's request to cut down five redwood trees to make way for new construction. the neighborhood is just a faw blocks from downtown. the developer was first allowed to remove the trees but backlash from neighbors forced the commission to reconsider. meantime the city council voted this week to allow another developer to remove 16 similar trees from a new construction project. >> right now it's 6:08 as you get ready to watch or you want to know what the weather is like in russia it's going to reach into upper 60s. partly cloudy and winds important out southeast at 15 miles an hour. it starts at 8:00, that stadium

seats 80,000 people. we'll watch that on telemundo 48 this morning. as we look outside at emeryville, we see those clouds are back this morning. we've also had patchy fog. as we go through the morning commute in the east bay checking out fremont's temperatures, it will be at 68 -- 60 at 8:00 and some upper 60s by noon. 71. either going to be cooler today than yesterday. we'll take a look at temperature trends for san jose coming up. vianey that has look at what's happening for parts of the bay area. >> definitely seeing some slowing. i do want to show you the one that seems to be causing the most back-up. the first one eastbound 880 at appian way. we can see delays backed up through willow avenue. you may want to hop off and hop back on after that. another delay near concord, southbound 242 after grant street. take a look look outside right now. dublin along 580, an earlier

right now at 6:13 we see all clear skies looking outside in san jose but that's not the case near the coast where we will have much more of a breeze. now those clouds will keep it cool even for inland areas. at sunnyvale, 64 at 10:00. early afternoon reaching into the low 80s, we're coming down out of those upper 80s and 90s like we had a couple days ago and the cooling continues in the forecast. i'll show you those numbers coming up in less than five minutes. >> i've got a check on your bridge drive time westbound 580 towards richmond bridge. you're looking 8 minutes 580 towards richmond bridge.

san mateo bridge, 16 minutes. an update on a couple accidents in the south bay coming up. >> happy thursday. it's flag day, the president's birthday as well. the head of the fed jerome powell. >> the economy is doing very well. most people who want to find jobs are finding them. unemployment and inflation are low. >> that may not sound all that arkable to you but if you were around in the era of alan greenspan fed chairman rarely speak plainly. that was powell's first press conference, he was easy to understand, makes my life easier. police agencies are angry at apple. the cupertino company is going to plug a security hole that law enforcement and bad guys were using to crack open phones without a password. apple and the law enforcement community have been at odds since san bernardino shooting when apple would not open the

terrorist iphone. feds were able to open it anyway. take a look at this, this is a proposed train terminal with high-speed trains that will take people from chicago to o'hare airport. elon musk will announce this today alongside the mayor of chicago. here is what it might look like. can you go from the loop to the airport in just 12 minutes. high-speed trains like you see here similar to what he's proposed for long as well. chicago, which has no money to spare, is not bearing for this. musk and the boring company will get the financing. we'll learn more today. it certainly seems like a gigantic project but elon musk often makes gigantic projects work. >> we'll see, innovation. >> you could get a glimpse of electric buses in san francisco. they will roll out 3-foot

battery powered bus at city hall. this is video of that bus you see. it's the highlight of a new study which shows the benefits of these buses. muni recently committed to transitioning to its full fleet of buses to zero emission buses by the years 2035. want some laughs? the family comedy marlon returns for a new season tonight. marlon wayan stars as a larger than life dad and ex-husband who is still very much part of the lives of his ex-wife and children. he's known for sometimes misguided fatherly advice. the show let's him go off script creating spontaneous comedy. >> i live to improvise. i don't know what i'm going to do. it's a scary feeling to not know what you're going to do in certain scenes. once i've got the grounded scenes down, okay, i'm good, let's go. >> probably scary for co-actors there. tonight little big shoets and

marlon with back-to-back episodes at 9:00. at 10:00 catch law and order special victims unit followed by nbc bay area news at 11:00. >> 8:00 and 10:00 hour you can get an ab workout with the laughs you have. it's so funny. no, the laughter. >> that's my kind of workout. >> we've got some great weather for laughter or working out or whatever you have to do today. we're starting out with clouds near the coast. a little bit more of an ocean breeze kicking in. it will cool areas even as far as dublin down just a few degrees from where we were yesterday as we take a live look outside. south bay forecast, seven-day forecast now at the bottom of the screen as we take a look at temperature friend for walnut creek. at 10:00 it's 66 degrees, sunny all day long. it's still going to be warm, 83 degrees. we're making some progress here.

our temperatures will come down over the next couple of days. hitting up some of the hiking trails, parks in south bay, how about loss dpats where our temperatures will be at 57 within the next hour or so. that sunshine warms it up to 68 degrees by 10:00. middle of the afternoon 80 degrees. overall a nice and warm day. but those breezy winds will make it feel much more comfortable with palo alto reaching 81 degrees, concord 87, napa 85 and san francisco up to 65 even though we start out with clouds and fog. our pollen report shows we still have a high amount of grass pollen. that's really the only thing affecting the allergy sufferers. as we kick off the weekend tomorrow alameda county fair will have a cattle drive through the middle of downtown pleasanton. this will be a nice event with some temperatures in the upper 60s as we go into the afternoon for tomorrow. in pleasanton it will be in the upper 70s so really comfortable.

here is an update on what was hurricane bud now a tropical storm moving closer to cabo. this still has some pretty strong wind speeds at 45 miles per hour but it will quickly race off towards the north and also change the weather for parts of the desert southwest. we'll be watching that as we make weekend plans let me know what you're doing on @karihall weather on twitter. let me know what event. father's day looks good, highs in upper 70s. it does heat up early next week. san francisco keeps those temperatures in the 60s. vianey has been tracking some major issues. a lot of them have been in the east bay. >> they have. that has caused some delays but now we're seeing another accident pop up. a bit more of a traffic hazard. earlier a crash southbound 101 after bayshore highway. the good news, looks like they have cleared out that right-hand shoulder that was blocked. now a bit of a situation. there may be debris on the road causing slowing in the south

we )re now learning what could have po so of course you probably remember the napa earthquake of 2014. we covered it here extensively. we're now learning what could have possibly caused it. a new study points to changing groundwater levels. the theory is every summer groundwater recedes causing the earth's crust to expand. researchers say in the summer of 2014 the expansion could have been the final straw which caused 6.0 earthquake. conservists like chris malan are not surprised. >> i myself have seen pools on

the napa river where the groundwater is sucking so hard the pools are diminishing and the fish are dying. >> researchers don't know why the ground water recedes every season. the napa quake killed one person and caused half a billion dollars in damage. federal investigators are looking into a possible hate crime in solano county. fbi and atf agents say a large cross behind the altar in rio vista was set on fire. agents arrested this woman, 23-year-old danielle ricafrente. she faces arson of a church and hate crime. no new money for child care and preschool for low and middle income families in alameda county. supporters say it didn't pass. it needed a two-thirds margin but failed by half a percent. more money coming to san francisco unified district for the next school year. san francisco examiner reporting governor brown's restoring

funding. there will also be more money for special ed department. despite additional funds the district will continue to make cutbacks that's because of recently tension and salary. the internet's most famous raccoon being released into the wild. the world watch on tuesday as the raccoon scaled a minnesota skyscraper. yesterday local wildlife management services posted the clip on facebook. they let the animal go in the suburbs of the twin cities after she scaled this amazing skyscraper. >> what a difference, right. coming up on "today in the bay," a retired colonel is using flag day to help service members with their health. >> waiting for a decision. the reason the supreme court is weighing in on bay area police shooting and what it could mean for the case. you're watching "today in the bay."

i'm april kennedy and i'm an arborist with pg&e in the sierras. since the onset of the drought, more than 129 million trees have died in california. pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future.

we will continue to see sub and temperatures in the low 60s at 8:00. normally we're at 79 degrees but we're still going to be warmer than average with highs reaching into the low 80s today, reaching 84 degrees in san jose, livermore 85 degrees. yeah, still hot in antioch, 88 for today's high and 84 in santa rosa. san francisco we'll bring it down a few degrees now that you're seeing those clouds 65 will be the high. in seven minutes i'll talk about the weekend and some events going on around the area. vianey tracking slow spots especially for parts of the south bay. >> indeed. the good news, a lot cleared ut in time for the 6:00 hour, a crash here is now closed. we have an incident causing delays back to willow avenue, eastbound appian way, a crash they are still working to clear

out. can you see on speed sensors, sl slowing going on. the morning commute, not clearing it out as fast. east bay drive times typical morning slowing along southbound 880, 238 to highway 4. east bay extremely busy so head out right now. i'm already seeing cameras showing slowing. i'll send it back to you. >> thank you, vianey. it's been almost five years since andy lopez shooting in the south bay now the supreme court may get involved. you may recall the 13-year-old was shot and killed by sonoma county deputy who thought the teenager was carrying a gun. >> pete suratos live on "today in the bay." pete, what will the supreme court do with this case. >> good morning. today the supreme court will decide if they want to hear that

case. specifically a ruling by a lower court when it comes to use of excessive force by that sheriff's deputy. let's go ahead and back up and give viewers a time line of all that's taken place in the last years. it happened back in october of 2013. you had sheriff's deputy shooting and killing lopez in 2013 as he was walking in an unincorporated part of santa rosa carrying a pellet gun the sheriff's deputy thought looked like an ak-47. at the time they decided not to file charges against the deputy. but the family filed civil rights lawsuit against the county and deputy claiming he violated what they said was a constitutional ban on unreasonable search and seizure by using excessive force. he said at the time he believed the weapon was an assault rifle and lopez was raising it towards him and his partner saying he was legally shielded from being sued because his use of force

was reasonable under these circumstances. the federal trial judge in oakland and ninth circuit appeals in san francisco disagreed saying he was not legally protect freddie that claim and that's why the county is appealing that decision to the u.s. supreme court. if a review is granted, it can take several months to review the case. the supreme court reviews only about 1% of cases petitioned each year. we're live in santa rosa, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you so much for that update. san francisco is making history again. london breed continues her victory celebration at her alma mater rosa parks elementary. she's the first black woman to be elected in san francisco. breed made it official yesterday. >> whether you voted for me or not, as mayor i will be your mayor, too. >> breed speaking to supporters on the steps of city hall after claiming victory after former state senator mark leno conceded. there are still votes to be counted but he said the math is not in his favor.

help out. >> you can see that full story. it airs at 7:30 on nbc "today" after "today in the bay." happening today in san francisco we're expecting to hear more about an officer-involved shooting which played out in front of dozens of people. the officer shot a suspect while chasing him. this was through north beach last weekend. take a look at this video. it shows just how busy that area was at the time of the shooting. the suspect did survive. no one else was injured. we could find out why police are chasing that suspect during a town halliscuss t shooting. >> continuing coverage and a sponse to heartless act of vandalism in the tri-valley. someone stole a piece of art and crosses in livermore. two died in a car crash last year over thanksgiving holiday. the driver of the car survived. overnight received a photo showing what's been done to

restore that memorial. friends and family hope to complete the work today. our next story sounds like a script out of a tv courtroom show. investigators say a san francisco man on trial for robbery tried to tamper with a jury. investigators say the man looked up two jurors on line and then went to their homes to talk to them. here is the san mateo county d.a. >> he went there. there was nobody answering at the door because the only person inside was the juror's teenager daughter who was in the shower and he went around to the side of the house and he's peeking in the window when she suddenly saw him. >> the d.a. says navarez went to another juror's house. that person was not home either, so he left a note. after finding out the judge declared a mistrial. navarez faces new charges for tampering and peeping. he's in jail now. this morning a retired air force colonel with northern california connection is pushing a way to help veterans.

>> he's using flag day today as the launch. chris strickland works with warriors heart foundation which helps vets cope with ptsd and mental health issues. one activity they say helps is hand crafting flags. that program is raffling and auctioning two flags to raise money. >> i think it's important because we have to protect those who protect us. people who serve whether veterans or first responders devote their lives, their family's lives to the flag, to what our freedom stands for. in their time of need, we need to give back to them and take care of them. >> strickland retired from air force base near yuba city. you can find details on the fundraiser at glorious heart.com. good morning, it is 6:37 right now. if that's your time to head out to work, head out now, although traffic is recovering quite nicely for south bay. 880 getting busier. we had earlier crashes. they are clearing out. i want to show you bridge drive

times because we've seen a change in these. westbound 580 towards richmond bridge about 12 minutes. westbound 92 towards san mateo br, about 10 minutes about 15inut ago. now at 22 minutes. we have had those metering lights on since 5:21 this morning. your tri-valley drive time westbound 580 from grant line road to 680 about 24 minutes. there are two accidents there recovering earlier. looks like we're seeing delays. unfortunately 880 in oakland, if this is your commute in the east bay seems to be the busiest road, highway. you know what's not busy, south bay. look at san jose, it is that typical commute but no bumper to bumper action going on. can i appreciate that. >> what a difference a day makes. >> two more days, the weekend. >> tomorrow. >> it starts tomorrow for some people. >> we've got some great weather this weekend coming up looking forward to cooler air for inland valleys. saturday will be up to 78

i'll show you. the county fair coming up in five minutes paragraph traffic east bay southbound 880, 230 to highway 4, looking at a 2 minute drive time. a look at your bridge time coming up. >> thanks so much vianey and kari. it is 6:34. new morning a motorcyclist dead after a crash on 880 overnight. we first brought you this story when we came on air at 4:30 this morning. it happened at 1:00 cot coleman ramp 880, right by san jose airport. chp said the motorcyclist, a man, hit the median at a high rate of speed and krashds. investigators believe another vehicle may have hit the motorcyclist and continued on driving. >> if you get on north concord bart station you know there's a major expansion in the area. an update on the progress.

general's report today about how the fbi handled its investigation into hillary clinton during 2016 presidential election. so there's all kinds of ammunition in there for donald trump. he doesn't like hillary clinton, he's critical of the fbi and he likes talking about the election. now, to be clear, this not an investigation into hillary clinton's e-mails, it's an investigation into how the fbi, and specifically james comey, handled that investigation into the e-mails including his now famous press conference about clinton right before the election. secretary of state mike pompeo busy with shuttle diplomacy. just left a meeting with leaders of south korea and japan. he's now meeting with chinese president xi briefing him on the american summit with kim jong-un. now, the president is getting pushback about the picture he's painting of the north korean dictator. here he is on "air force one" with fox news bret baier who points out kim executes people.

temperature trend for santa clara, great america, is going to be at 60 at 8:00. we will be warming up fast. at noon 75 degrees and reaching 80 degrees. but overall a cooler day compared to what we've had recently. walnut creek it will still be warm at 10:00. 63 degrees. noontime temperatures still nice to take lunch outside, low 70s. but it will go up from there to the upper 80s by 4:00 today. a lot of sunshine. seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. if you want some cooler temperatures, you may want to head to san mateo where the county fair continues today. it will be in the upper 60s through the middle of the afternoon. mostly sunny skies, breezy winds. just don't forget the sunscreen. we'll see those highs today for the interior valleys reaching mid to upper 80s. still very warm also in napa, 85 degrees. while san francisco will reach 65 degrees, you're seeing the clouds right now. it will be slow to clear as we go into the next couple of

hours. although we're seeing those clear skies looking out the window in the south bay, do you have to wear summer gear, short sleeves and shorts today. good to have sunglasses and sandals. a hat, too, would be a good option. even though we have cool temperatures to start, we are in for quickly warming temperatures reaching 85 for the inland area today, even cooler tomorrow. then also as we head through the weekend father's day really pleasant with highs in the upper 70s. it will be warm up tuesday 88 degrees. san francisco not much of a change he. morning clouds and fog each day and highs in the 60s. vianey has been tracking some of the issues out there on the roads. how is it looking right now. >> for a while we got definitely on the busier side. now you can see not a lot of accidents but a lot of slowing. it is because we're getting closer to the 7:00 a.m. hour now. i do have good news. there was a crash along eastbound 880 that was still blocking lanes. now they have finally cleared those out. can you see traffic is working
