live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. . and welcome to "today." thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. i got to say i just flew back from memphis where i got to be in the room when kim kardashian west and alice johnson saw each other for the very first time. it was a very cool moment to be there for that and to watch kim literally changed that woman's life. >> yes, they talked on the phone, but they had never met and this was their first meeting. i can't wait to hear. >> and she had no idea who kim kardashian was because she had been in prison for 20 years. >> we'll look forward to that in a little bit. >> that breaking news overnight, powerful storms here in the northeast. the latest on that. hey, kristen, good morning. >> daylight is revealing more of the widespread damage. this morning they're just beginning to get a sense of how bad those storms were.

overnight severe weather including a possible tornado ripping across northeast pennsylvania. downing power lines, blocking roads, overturning cars and upending u haul trucks. the damage making this shop plaza look like a war zone. >> the entire rear of the store, totally destroyed, collapsed in and the roof overthe main structure is also gone. >> residents dodging debris while driving through town. >> i started going like 5 miles, 10 miles an hour to get home because i was just that scared. >> they have it mostly cleared out but huge chunks of concrete. >> reporter: emergency crews responding to the scene, incredibly just six people reportedly suffering minor injuries. officials asking people to steer clear of the shopping center. >> another key for safety sake as we're still evaluating the structural integrity, please stay away from the area.

>> reporter: saying they are grateful it all happened later in the evening. >> we are extremely fortunate and thank god this occurred at 9:30 and not at 6:30. if this occurred during the rush business hours we would have had a much worse situation. >> now, the american red cross is on the scene assisting first responders this morning and the national weather service is sending a team out today to assess the damage but it could have been so much worse if it was full of people. also this morning is the president's personal lawyer ready to cooperate with federal flvs gat investigators? that amid reports that michael cohen is splitting from his legal team. kristen welker with the latest on that. >> reporter: the white house is closely watching what happens with the president's former personal attorney and fixer michael cohen who's seeking new legal counsel. the question looming large here could cohen be ready to flip on his former boss?

>> reporter: this morning with speculation mounting that michael cohen could cooperate with federal prosecutors, the president's attorney rudy giuliani is trying to turn down the heat telling nbc news, i have no information suggesting cohen is going to flip and that's nothing involving the president even if he did. therefore i'm not concerned. and on laura ingram overnight. >> the president did nothing wrong. we're very comfortable if he cooperates that there's nothing he can cooperate about with regard to president trump. >> reporter: still buzz began to build after revelations cohen is looking to split with his current legal team. people familiar with the matter tell nbc news that cohen who has not been charged with a crime has not even spoken with prosecutors, a necessary step in any plea agreement. investigators are still poring over documents they seized from cohen's office and residences in that dramatic fbi raid two months ago. one focus, that $130,000 hush money payment cohen admits making to stormy daniels just

before the 2016 election. daniels said she had a sexual encounter with mr. trump in 2006 which the white house denies. daniel's lawyer michael avenatti waying in. >> when the music stops he's not going to be left with a chair and this is a dangerous situation for the president. >> reporter: the president rushed to cohen's defense following the raid lashing out at the fbi at the time. >> i just heard they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys, good man, and it's a disgraceful situation. it's a total witch hunt. >> reporter: later dismissing speculation cohen would flip on him saying most people will flip if the government lets them out of trouble and i don't see him doing that and just before the president took office cohen declaring -- >> i'll do anything to protect mr. trump. >> reporter: there's the frequent attacks on the russia inquiry taking a toll. rob rt mueller's public image at

its lowest so far. 53% of republicans viewing him unfavorably. >> and there's another big event happening today. the justice department is going to release its inspector general's report about the clinton e-mail case, how that was handled and particularly the conduct of former fbi director james comey. >> reporter: that's right. the justice department is expected to release that highly anticipated report of the agency's entire conduct during the 2016 election. it's expected to be critical of some of the officials at the highest levels. that could include former fbi director james comey and the handling of that clinton e-mail server, the white house and congress will be briefed later today. >> i know you'll be keeping your eyes out for it. thank you. now to the renewed fight over immigration and a first look behind the doors of america's largest detention facility for migrant children. it is in texas and is being pushed to capacity because of a new trump administration policy that separates parents and

children entering the u.s. illegally. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this was shocking to see, quite frankly. this morning there are 1,500 young boys waking up inside this former walmart and with so many families crossing right here in south texas now being split up this overcrowding crisis doesn't seem like it's going to let up any time soon. texas's rio grande valley is home to more people caught by the u.s. border patrol than anywhere else on the border. a few months ago we met edwin and edwin jr. as thaw turned themselves in seeking asylum. >> mwhy did you come to the united states? >> translator: a lot of problems in our country. >> were you scared to come to the united states? >> reporter: yes. >> why.

>> translator: a lot of bad guys. >> reporter: the department of homeland security wouldn't tell us if they separated them or where they are today. if the trump administration is successful of implementing its policy, all families that enter are going to be separated. the kids are going to come to a place just like this. this is the casa pad reshelter in browns vville, texas. check this out. here's a van coming in right here, looks like there are some boys coming in right now. >> reporter: they didn't let us bring our cameras inside but these fphotos of the shelter where we saw facilities pushed to capacity. the kids here don't get out much spending almost 22 hours a day indoors. they also don't talk with their parents very much either and we were told cases of psychological distress is also something they see here with some of the kids being medicated for mental health issues without their parents even knowing it.

an hour and a half later we were back outside. i have been inside federal prisons, i've been inside county jails. i've been inside, you know, detention centers of all kinds. effectively that's all this is. i don't know how you prepare to see that. it's 10 to 17-year-old boys without their family. some of them came on their own and some have been separated, ripped apart from their parents. it makes you think about what about the little girls? what about the babies? this is about as good as it's going to get in there. >> you think about 22 hours a day inside for some of these kids you think it's a lot. then what? after they're in that facility, what happens to them? >> reporter: the craziest thing hoda, is when you go inside, one of the officials said smile at these kids. they feel like animals locked up in cages being looked at. they spend a couple of months in places like this.

the quality of the care is good. these are trained and licensed professionals. they're looking for sponsors on the way out. in terms of what happens next, if these kids end up in tent cities the next generation of them, they won't necessarily have the same quality of care that the kids inside this former walmart do this morning. >> all right. thank you. also this morning, there's been a major development in that tragic case of fraternity hazing at penn state. the first guilty plea in the death of a 19-year-old pledge. kate snow is here with the latest on that. good morning. >> good morning. there are 26 young men charged in relationsh to the death but this is the first penn state fraternity brother to admit any guilt. ryan burk was accused of handing a big bottle of vodka to the pledge the night he died. >> 21-year-old ryan burk pleading guilty to nine charges including four misdemeanor counts of hazing and supplying

alcohol to a minor. >> mr. burk stepped forward to acknowledge and accept his responsibility. we didn't ask for a plea agreent. >> reporter: none was offered. we didn't thinkha w appropriate. >> reporter: he died after falling down a flight of stairs inside a penn state fraternity house last year after a hazing ritual known at the gauntlet where pledges were expected to quickly consume alcohol. prosecutors allege the brothers failed to help him at multiple intervals and didn't call first responders for 12 hours. >> this young man understands that. our condolences go to the family. this is a tragedy and he is anxious to make amends. >> reporter: for his family the guilty plea is just the beginning. >> this is a good start and hopefully it will show others that it's okay to step up and take responsibility for the things that they did wrong. >> reporter: now more than a year after his son's death his father jim, still wonders why. >> why did you do it?

it's my son. it's an incredible void. and you know, i think we -- you know, we have a long road ahead of us. we'll never get over it but just to come to peace. >> just incredible what they've been there. >> yeah. >> so this young man that pleaded guilty, then he'll be sentenced. is he facing jail time? >> technically those four hazing charges that he pled guilty to could carry jail time but it's a first offense. it will be up to the judge's discretion and the sentencing is due to happen july 31st and another trial starts in august as well. >> thank you. emotions will be high in washington as members of congress come together for their annual baseball game for charity. it comes one year at a practice that wounded house majority steve scalise. casey hunt has more on this. >> reporter: good morning.

steve scalise will take the field here at nationals park tonight. this annual charity game has very special meaning because a year ago scalise couldn't be here. he was fighting for his life. a year later he's well enough to have been able to practice for tonight's big game. >> ready to play some baseball. >> reporter: it's been a long journey back to the diamond for steve scalise. the number 3 house republican nearly died a year ago when he was shot in the hip at practice for last year's congressional baseball game. >> there's a trail of blood. we can't help him. we've got bats versus a rifle. >> reporter: three others were also shot but scalise and his teammates were lucky. >> security detail and capitol hill police will immediately begin to return fire. >> reporter: it took three months and multiple surgeries, but scalise was back at work by

the fall. >> you have no idea how great this feels to be back here at work in the people's house. i'm definitely a living example that miracles really do happen. >> reporter: last week he practiced for the first time with his teammates for this year's charity game. >> i want to welcome the whip back. >> reporter: tonight as republicans and democrats trade in their daily battles over policy in favor of pinstripes, for scalise, just taking the field is a win. >> you've come a long way. >> it's been a journey. had a lot of prayers, a lot of support, a lot of surgeries, but you know, just to know where i was a year ago and where i am now, it shows you -- you just get back in the game and keep battling. >> reporter: scalise is of course very excited to get back on the field in some capacity for tonight's big game. when we stopped by practice, he said that he was hoping to reearn his starting position at

second base. so we'll see if he's convinced his coaches that he's ready for that job. >> i have a feeling he's probably done that. >> thank you. we had talked about those storms in the northeast overnight. what to expect today? let's go to al. he's on the road again for our deserving dads today series but let's talk about this weather in the northeast. >> yeah, well, again, the good news is that threat is over. so we're not worried about the northeast. all eyes now shifting down into the southeast where we're looking at some strong storms that are firing up and will continue to fire up during the day today, bringing heavy weather right now between birmingham and mobile, alabama, as this front sags to the south. the same front that caused the big problems in the northeast. heavy rains, gusty winds, that continues on into friday. the threat will linger right through the weekend. it has been a miserable time throughout the southeast and on the gulf coast, anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of rain, locally

today, june 14th, 2018. >> i'm glad we have closure on the raccoon. i want to know he's okay. >> i leave for one day, and that big story happens. >> exactly. >> we're going to get to our exclusive interview with kim kardashian west and alice johnson. they met face-to-face for the first time yesterday. it was one week after president trump commuted alice's life sentence. thanks, in part, to kim's effort to set alice free. ♪ >> i'm home. >> reporter: alice marie johnson is home. sharing one of her favorite gospel songs with me. special moments like these with her family, nearly 22 years in the making. you never gave up. >> never. >> reporter: not a day. >> not on the worst day. >> reporter: alice was sentenced to life in prison without parole for her role in a drug trafficking operation in the memphis area. it was a first time, non-violent offense.

that came after alice faced tough moments in her life, including divorce, job loss, and the death of her youngest son. >> it's a darkness of the soul. it's something unimaginable. you know, i know that many people experience tragedy, and they don't get involved in illega they don't get involved in illegal activities. myforeclosed on. i had to file for bankruptcy. i couldn't provide for the things that my children needed. >> reporter: i think we really are all one bad decision away from disaster. all of us. the first day you made that bad decision, you decided to get involved in this drug ring, did you know what you were getting into? >> no. i knew what was going on, but i thought that what i was doing was just such a minor thing. i'm not trying to excuse myself, hoda. i want to make that clear. i did make that choice, to do what i did. but sometimes, you make excuses for your actions.

before you know it, it's deeper in, further down. >> reporter: alice's case caught the attention of kim kardashian west. in october 2017, she shared alice's story on twitter, saying, this is so unfair. >> at first, i just retweeted it. then i sent it to my attorney. i said to her, is there anything we can do? can we, you know, hire different attorneys? what are the options here? what can we do? >> reporter: after being incarcerated for 20 years, how well did you know the name kim kardashian? >> i didn't. i did not know her name. i didn't know kim. as soon as i found out who she was, i started getting every magazine i could find. i started reading everything that i could about her. everyone was amazed. i was amazed, too. >> reporter: so you retweeted, and some people would have said, that was great. 60 million people now know. way to go, kim. but you weren't done after that retweet. why did you decide to take it another step further?

>> it became this mission that i just didn't want to give up. i think to some people, it might seem like, okay, kim made a phone call to the president, showed up. we had been in talks and working on this for seven months. it wasn't an instant thing. >> reporter: kim, you're going to go all the we to tay to the house. who do you call first? >> i called ivanka. we had a really great conversation about women and wanting to help each other. i knew that she would have understood alice. she immediately was so receptive and so great. >> reporter: that chat led to an oval office meeting with president trump two weeks ago. coincidentally, on alice's birthday. >> i can't believe we're in the oval office. this is crazy. this is just insane. just the history in this one

room. it was overwhelming in the most amazing way. >> reporter: was the president there yet, or were you waiting? >> yes, yes, he was at his desk. >> reporter: did you try to break the ice with anything? >> yeah. well, i first said that i am here because i really want to know why you kicked khloe off the "apprentice." he laughed. it broke the ice. then we got focused. we spoke about alice. i explained to him where i found her, why i believe in her, how people deserve second chances, and immediately -- i mean, the president had compassion for her right away. he felt that it was the right thing to do. >> reporter: one week after the oval office meeting, alice was released from prison. >> thank you, jesus! >> reporter: it was kim kardashian west who called alice with the good news. >> i believe she said, you can go home. you can go home. >> reporter: you can go home? >> you can go home now. are you ready to go home?

when she said that, i went into full fledged pentecostal holy dance. i started screaming and jumping. people were listening. i'm telling you, i was dancing. i was dancing. i was jumping. i was screaming. i was doing everything. >> reporter: kim, what did it sound like from your end? >> i just -- well, at first, i thought she knew. the news was starting to break, and we had to get her on the phone. i said, wait, you don't know? she was like, know what? i was like, you're going home. screams and cries. we all just cried on the phone. >> reporter: it was not until yesterday the two women met face-to-face for the first time. >> i love this woman. >> i love this lady. >> reporter: how do you even begin to say thank you? i was thinking that. like how? >> thank you is not big enough. i think i have to walk it out. i have to walk my thank you out. i have to live it out for her. for my family. for the supporters.

>> yeah. >> reporter: you're saying, you can still go in there and fight for something that's right. >> absolutely. i hope maybe this inspires more people to talk to the people in pow power. that you can have an effect over them for the greater good of other people. >> reporter: the president has said -- he's very hard on people who are drug dealers, drug traffickers, the thing you're convicted of. he said he believes the death penalty is appropriate in some of the cases. do you think you can change his mind? >> i think his mind is being changed already. >> me, too. >> to me, i saw compassion. >> reporter: you're discussing this subject, and you light up. it is like purposeful. there is something. do you see your life going down another path? >> people have been asking me, are you getting into politics? no. i'm still doing me. but i enjoy this. this has fulfilled my heart.

possible for usc to right the wrongs they feel has been done. >> it is painful to know that, like, our collective voices ultimately meant near nothing to usc. >> i think dr. tyndall has thousands of victims. >> reporter: a usc grad and the lead attorney in the usa gymnastics sexual abuse scandal involving disgraced dr. nassar, says over 130 women have approached him with claims of abuse against george tyndall, dating back as early as 1988, when he was just a resident. >> your first obligation is to protect the safety of your students. and usc miserably failed at that. and they failed for 30 years. >> reporter: tyndall was fired in 2017 with a payout after an internal investigation. the investigation determined there was no criminal activity. until the "l.a. times" report this past may, usc had not contacted authorities.

now, the federal government has announced an investigation. usc saying in response, we welcome the u.s. department of education's investigation and the university will fully cooperate with their inquiry. >> i really hope that by speaking out, people will rise and know that they're not alone and they don't have to keep this secret. i kept the secret for a long time. they don't have to keep this secret. >> reporter: these five women determined to show strength, courage, character. they say they just want usc to do the same. nbc news has repeatedly tried to contact dr. tyndall for comment without success. while he has not responded to nbc, he has defended himself in a letter to the "l.a. times." in part, patients sometimes fabricate stories. he vigorously defended his practices throughout usc's internal investigation. now, the medical board of california confirms they are actively investigating claims of sexual misconduct by george tyndall. as of now, he is still able to

arlington, virginia. >> the feeling was, a black didn't have the courage to be a fireman. we tried harder to do better. >> reporter: better he did. going on to become the first black station commander south of the mason-dixon line. >> 27 years in the department. i have to say, i love that job. you learn to love helping people. >> reporter: saving people by day and driving a taxi at night to make end's meet. eventually, becoming a partner in one of the first african-american owned taxicab companies in virginia, which he still runs to this day. >> i didn't know that the world thought my dad shouldn't be a firefighter or shouldn't own a cab company. it was always, whatever you want to do, do it. >> reporter: that included caddying part time at a segregated golf club. sneaking back in after dark to play a round on the back nine
