"today in the bay" continues right now. >> good monday morning, hope you had a great weekend. thanks for joining us. >> we'll get to your traffic in just a moment but we were talking about the heat up and it is coming but we can enjoy the weather right now. >> we start out with the clouds and fog near the coast. that's still going to keep it cool. with 60s for the coast but low 80s for the inland areas, up to 80 degrees for the interior valleys, look how the

temperatures go up each day this week. summer officials begins this thursday and saturday 97 degrees. san francisco goes from 65 today to 75 by saturday and it's going to be overall a fairly nice week there. we'll talk about all of the changes ahead in the forecast. mike, you have an important update for hayward. >> i do, that's where the exceptional backup is this morning. rest of the bay shows a typical build here, slow. 880 is slow in general. one crash has cleared south 880 around the 92 interchange. there may be a second at the jackson overcrossing. we're getting updates and see the build from san leandro through hayward approaching 92. that is the toughest drive. if you're coming out of castro valley you can use waze to get over because it may be better. there you go, see more buildup that just showed up northbound 230 shows the build out of castro valley. the rest of the contra costa moves smoothly and bay bridge

toll plaza has metering lights on which is typical of the commute morning. we're looking hereof towards the richmond/san rafael bridge. heading into the north bay more volume. back to you. don't be alarmed if you see smoke in the east and south bay. firefighters are conducting controlled burns as fire season is ramping up. >> pete suratos is live in orinda. what do firefighters do this? >> reporter: good morning, to you marcus and laura. you know it is good practice for them preparing for wall fire season. you'll see them having these controlled burn zones in parts of orinda and morgan hill. we're standing right now, not too far from the reservoir, this is kind of area where those controlled burns will take place. before we get into that, let's talk about where some of the real brush fires took place over the weekend. this was in santa rosa, up to

seven brush fires taking place on saturday night, calling them suspicious. happening along the santa rosa creek trail. on the railroad tracks near fulton road. those fires were small, no structures were burned and no one was evacuated. as for those controlled burns, we want to show viewers where they are taking place in orinda. taking place directly across from the sub station, pg&e sub station in orinda and the other one happening not too far from where we're standing between bear creek road and reservoir. today through june 28th and i will happen on differe dates during that time. firefighters will burn for moderate burning conditions. the fires will be set up with preexisting fire control lines with extra fire engines stage on site as backup. i want to point out there's a chance you may see or smell smoke in the areas, close exterior doors and windows to keep the smoke out of your home.

keep posted on changes with social media but we can expect to see more controlled burns throughout wildfire season. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. happening today, a verdict is expected in the case against the so-called berkeley five. those five people took part in a counter rally against president trump march of last year. fights broke out between two sides and several arrests were made. the five defendants were charged with misdemeanor assault. the man who recently labeled jogger joe by the people in oakland is supposed to be arraigned today on felony charges. henry sente accused of stealing a phone from a man filming him during an altercation. that man says that he was confronted about a viral video showing him trashing a homeless man's property near lake merritt. faces robbery and assault charges tided to the second

incident. the immigration battle is heating up, dozens spent the weekend pushing back against the trump administration immigration policy. rallies were held at san carlos city hall and the west county detention center in richmond yesterday. one of the organizers told us he spent father's day with his two children but couldn't stop thinking about what fathers and immigration detention centers are experiencing. >> there's a lot of people very angry with what's going on and feeling helpless. for father's day, let's bring everyone together. >> he passed out papers encouraging people to take action to call the representative and donate to legal aid groups trying to help immigrant detainees. similar proests were seen across the country as anger spilling over about immigrant children being separated from their parents. tracie pots joins us live from washington, d.c. what is next, tracie? >> reporter: what's next, the president is going to be meeting with lawmakers to try to figure this out. this morning he's tweeting

blaming democrats for what he calls the world's worst immigration laws. >> father's day protest across the country including this one in texas against tent cities being set up to house immigrant children. >> i'm not happy. they went up fast. should follow the money. >> nearly 2,000 children have been separated from their parents since april. when the government started enforcing zero tolerance. >> hot mess, that's what this is. >> president trump facing critics from his own party. >> the republican voter and i'm not any more -- >> president blames bad legislation by democrats. >> the democrats have to change their law. that's their law. >> first lady melania trump weighing in, mrs. trump hates seeing children separated from their families and a statement from her office says adding that the u.s. needs to follow all laws but govern with heart.

involved inhe hit-and-run. the bus drive will make a full recovery andlready out of the hospital this morning now to a harrowing rescue along the coast, video of the chp helicopter showing there that working to bring the three hikers to safety they were trapped on the cliff after the hike and it wasn't until saturday morning that rescue crews could get the two teenage girls and 3-year-old man. they were air lifted to safety and able to get to the ground and expected to be okay. >> we start out with mostly clear skies. it's going to be another warm day, starting out in the upper 60s and low 80s today. if will be cool along the coast as we get a look at our temperature trend for half moon bay. low 60s into the afternoon. here's a look at the san jose

temperature trend where we'll be in the low 60s at 8:00 and mostly sunny skies into the upper 70s by early afternoon. it's one of the days to enjoy this week because it's about to get hot. i'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, now you have more info in the crash in hayward. >> two crashes, the first one heading towards the san mateo bridge, going to get more crowded as the second crash clears. the last couple of minutes we got the all clear and see the volume building across the cross section. as you head down through san leandro, starts to show improvement for speeds there and as well as at the bottom of the screen. past jackson and 92 terchange, allanes cleared from two earlier crashes and we're seeing a little build a bit for north 28, trying to cut off towards 92 itself. there will be more congestion in that portion of the east bay. a nice easy drive, disabled

happy monday to you. markets may be in the red again today.. as investors worry about the growing threat of a trade war with china. and.. for that matter.. canada. stocks had their worst week since march last week. two u-s lawmakers.. have written a letter to amazon.. demanding more information about how alexa might listen in to your private life tesla.. always a big focus.. over the weekend actress mary mccormick published this video of her family )s tesla catching fire in traffic. she says there was no crash. tesla says it is investigating and calls it an "unusual occurance." elon musk has promised 5- thousand tesla 3 )s a month. starting in june. and it )s june. musk makes promises all the time.. but this one )s important

cl 6:24 right now. nbc bay area responds to a teacher who's debit card was being used out of state while she was. >> when christine frazier saw bank transactions totalling $2300 in arizona, she knew she had been ripped off. she was teaching here in california while thieves were going on a shopping spree with her card. she immediately reported the activity to chase and at first the bank returned the funds but then it reversed course and told her the items do not require any correction. christine says she couldn't believe it. how could the bank conclude she was using her debit card in

phoenix while at work 600 miles away here in california. that's when christine asked for our help. we contacted chase and it credited her back the full $2370.44. we asked chase to explain what happened but it only told us we looked into this as soon as we heard about it and we're glad we were able to make the customer whole again. >> we don't know how christine's a.t.m. pin was stolen but we do know one big national weak spot for debit and a.t.m. cards, gas pumps. new safer chip and pin cards are not required on gas pumps until the year 2020. so that's where thieves frequently steal car numbers and pin using devices called skimmers and shimmers. if you really want to protect yourself during the next fill-up, bring your card inside and pay for the gas th the cashier. call us any time with your consumer complaint.

over to kari hall. a good day to get out and enjoy it. >> it's going to be really nice. a little bit warmer than yesterday but we do once again start out with clouds and fog along the coast as we take a live look outside in san francisco this morning. you step out the door at 60 degrees, 58 in oakland and 59 now in san jose. but then as we get a look at our high temperatures today, reaching in the low to mid-80s for the inland valley from antioch up to 84 degrees, 82 in morgan hill and 80 in san jose. palo alto 75 and 65 in san francisco. we'll talk about a hot weekend ahead coming up in seven minutes and mike, hayward continues to recover. >> that's good news. a lighter volume of traffic give880 a chance to lok a little better during the course of the mornig. oef ten times if we have crashes like we did, that would be it for the morning commute. we're seeing speeds improve, san leandro towards 238 passing down towards a street and things really get lightened up and

folks heading towards the san mateo bridge and more towards hayward and fremont and union city. we have crashes again cleared from the area right around the 92 interchange but 92 itself does show that flood of traffic over the last few. we see that but no problems across the flat section. you're slower than it was 20 minutes ago. also the approach to the bay bridge because metering lights are on and backup is here off of 880 is tough. these lanes are moving smoothly and that means it's not a big deal just metering lights causing the backup. >> 6:32 right now. new this morning, you might notice more bikes scattered along the street in north san jose. if you live there or see them when you head into work this morning. there's a new option for you to get around and also a new twist in the bike share programs in san francisco. oakland and downtown parts of san jose. "today in the bay" sharon katsuda is live. i know you've been digging to get the scoop on this. tell us what you found out. >> reporter: marcus, i think you

would look pretty good on one of these bikes, they are blue and green, you can't miss them with this nice rack on top. then i just turn the bike on for a 30 minute ride and you can see there's a nice bell here. we found about 20 of these just five minutes within the station here on north first street. they are all over the place. you can take a look. they are self-locking dockless bikes. once you're done with the ride you with drop them off just about anywhere in north san jose. we found some this morning on morning propped up near a rock and saw clusters of them along the cisco campus. rides are $2 for a 30 minute ride and discounts for low income residents. you can pay for the ride online. it has thousands of bikes throughout the bay area, 200 now in the north san jose area. some of the boundaries crud guadalupe river and south bay freeway to the north and trim bl road to the south. back here live you can see how

nifty these bikes are. it actually has a lock. when i purchase this ride about a half hour ago, this lock turned on or actually activated. so it unlocked the bike and then you can see the signs on here, it says you have to ride and return in north san jose. some of the rules include you cannot put them in your car or take them on a ferry but you can ride them just about anywhere as long as you return them in the north san jose area. i have about ten more minutes on this bike. it's been a lot of fun, you have to wear a helmet. they strongly recommend that and just make sure you leave it in a safe place where it's not in pedestrian's way. reporting live in san jose. >> get your exercise in in between live shots. >> absolutely. >> good for you, sharon. >> 6:34. if sea levels continue to rise, thousands of coastal homes may be threatened over the next three decades. this is a live look at redwood

shores, an area at risk. those are the findings from one advocacy group called the union of concerned scientists and looked at data compiled by zillow and found 20,000 homes may be threatened within 30 years, they have a collective value of more than $15 billion. researchers also found 2.4 million homes along the entire pacific coast could be threatened over the next 80 years. >> preparing for the next disaster, that's what the department of public health and emergency management in san francisco will be doing today. they are holding an extreme weather workshop. they will brain storm sharing new and creative ways to reach out to the most vulnerable communities during extreme weather events like heat and flooding. you may recall three elderly people died over the labor day weekend during a record heat wave in the city. >> a developing story at least three people are dead. this is after an earthquake jolted western japan. dozens more are injured after that powerful 5.3 earthquake hit

osaka japan. shortly before 8:00 a.m. local time on monday, japan actually is 16 hours ahead of us on the west coast. train and subway service were stopped as crews checked for the damage. more than 170,000 homes are without power. earthquake was inland which experts say poses no risk for tsunami. >> a woman accused of having sex with underage boys is in the south bay scheduled to appear in court. talia cisco and her best friend both 23 years old became the target of a santa clara sheriff investigation back in april. they were tipped off about the alleged relationship between the women and several 15 and 16-year-old boys. cisco is a student teacher at bernal midle school in san jose but detectives have not fund any connection to students there. scisco is scheduled for court today, perani's first appearance is still pending.

>> ac transit riders are waking up to a new set of service changes as part of a multiyear overhaul. this is the third phase of what the agency calls ac go. involves numerous stream lined routes and all started three years ago. now this latest phase includes additional buses on the 80 line which runs between elr cerrito. all 600 buses or service to school lines are out for the summer. >> a live look where soccer fans already gathered for another big morning of international soccer on big screen. first of three world cup matches being played in russia. sweden is facing korea. those two teams are also in mexico's group. defighted germany yesterday and belgium takes on panama and tunisia faces england. don't forget our sister station, telemundo 48, home for copa de

mundial every day. >> fun at the copa de mun dial -- i know, i know. a little build on northbound 101 subtle over the last ten minutes. i want to point out this portion of the tri-valley. slowing around vargas, there's a disabled vehicle northbound counter commute but again there may be distraction by flashing lights on the scene. that's the note for the tri-valley. the rest moves smoothly. hayward south 880 shows a little slowing past the san mateo bridge but the earlier crash did recover and we've seen an easy backup forming here at the berkeley curve and it's slow. as folks make their way towards the bay bridge toll plaza, no surprises here except for a nice smooth maze just slower than you probably like. all right. >> we can always think about the weekend. >> we can. let's talk about it.

>> before you make plans, make sure you check out the forecast. here it is as we go through the week. it will be 80 degrees today but by saturday we're up to 97 for the inland valleys and it is going to heat up as this week goes along. let's check out our pride weekend forecast in san francisco. that is where you'll want to hang out because it will be much more comfortable aefrn mid-70s by saturday and in time for the parade on sunday, 73 degrees, if you're going to the sierra this weekend, it's also going to be very warm there. upper 70s and low 80s with sunshine all weekend long. check out russian river valley. 91 on friday and 97 degrees on saturday. it will be cooling down by sunday there and if you're going to santa cruz, it's going to be the warmest day on saturday. 73 degrees with mostly sunny skies and upper 60s by the end of the weekend. let me know what you're dng theekend ahere you'll be lebrating pride.

. good monday mornings mostly 50s and 60s and we're seeing a few clouds rolling by in palo alto as you head out. we'll see those clouds rolling out of here and clearing by about 11:00 this morning then it starts to warm up a. a really nice day and comfortable with low 70s, it's about to get hot and i'll talk about how hot it gets and where you can cool off coming up in about five minutes. travel times for east bay, 880 slows from 23 down towards the dumbarton bridge but that's better than it was before. earlier crashes cleared in hayward. the other side of the bay peninsula, you're at speed and that's great for highway 101. >> thanks.

6:43, live look at orinda, not too far from the reservoir. over the coming days you may see smoke in the skies nearby because firefighters from the orinda fire district are conducting wildfire training drills, the controlled burns will only take place if the conditions are right. new push for safety in a busy intersection. embarking on a year long improvement project that includes more clearly marked crossings as long -- as well as new striping and lettering and expect to see more guard rails. more than a dozen crossings will be improved and the cost of the prom is $3.5 million. a booming taxi industry -- they are zdiscuss ways to help the industry get back on its feet after the ride share boom. many are going under. today's meeting is at 2:00 at city hall. new for you this morning, new numbers indicating the new

all mail-in ballot option may have boosted voting numbers for the recent california primary. in all five california counties chose this option. all voters received ballots in the mail and could either send them back or drop them off at ballot boxes. turn out in sacramento county jumped more than 20% from the last mid-term vote and napa more than 15%. more competitive races may have also contributed. >> families torn apart at the border. it has become a crisis for not only the families but the white house. >> several prominent republicans say it needs to end. >> indeed, including one of our former first ladies on thissish why, haur laura bush wrote an o for the weapon weapo"washington" i appreciate the need to enforce and protect our boundaries but the zero tolerance policy is cruel and is immoral and it breaks my heart. protests over the weekend in the

bay area over the issue. the u.s. conference of catholic bishops calling for an end to the policy and ahead of the american pediatric association calls the jailing frankly of children a form of child abuse. >> continues to deny the practice was caused by policies and it's it's the law and no choice but to follow it. this is absolutely not the case. the president is not telling the truth. >> the head of homeland security deny what's we're talking about exists at all. we don't have a policy of separating families at the border, period. the president has been tweeting a lot lately and this one over the weekend i felt was particularly important and i wanted to point it out. witch hunt he says, there was no russia collusion now they have to look for obstruction on the no russian collusion. it was a made up hoax. too bad they didn't look at crooked hillary like the double stan ard.

you're going to cool off along the coast, maybe going boating today, just offshore we'll see those skies clearing around noon. we'll be at 62 degrees, a light westerly wind at about 10 knots and waves 2 feet or less. good day to go boating because our northwesterly swell will be at about 3 to 5 feet. we will have warm weather reaching 82 in concord and livermore as well as morgan hill. san jose 80 degrees today and 69 in oakland. santa rosa expect a high of 81 degrees today. as you're getting dressed you'll be comfortable with light long sleeves and maybe just a t-shirt but don't forget the sunglasses. you'll get a lot of sunshine once the clouds we're seeing right now clears out. a live look from at&t park, going to the game this evening, first pitch at 7:15. it will be cool and upper 50s and dropping back to the mid-50s by the end of the game with breezy winds. check out these numbers as the week goes along. inland valleys go from 80 today

to 97 on saturday. i wouldn't be surprised if we had many spots inland reaching over 100 degrees while san francisco will be in the mid-60s today. we'll be in the mid-70s in time for the weekend. mike, you're checking out a report for the east shore freeway. >> i moved our camera from the berkeley curve all the way up to university and beyond there's a report of a couple of lanes being affected by a disabled vehicle. you do see traffic moving smoothly, a good amount of traffic and that volume is causing slowing heading down out of el cerrito through richmond and break past golden gate field. that's where it's reported around powell, disabled vehicle action but i don't see any problem. we'll track that. the smaller crashes along the bay, walnut creek interchange, antioch, all great. little slowing there. the disabled vehicle still north 680 at vargas but southbound just fine.
