napa. we'll talk about how hot it gets through the week and mike checking the lights across the bay bridge. >> we're looking at these slow tail lights going across but i did see the flashing lights. a crew looked like it started to clear westbound direction. just after treasure island. can't see treasure island and can't see the tower because of low clouds hovering above the driving deck. we'll track it but no problems reported and as far as chp goes or on our sensors over here, a nice drive across the bay. you saw the slowing for the crew clearing from the span. rest of the bay moves well. we'll point out other spots coming up. back to breaking news that we're following, overnight change of gunfire between union city officers and several suspects leaves at least one person hurt. >> pete suratos is live off of railroad avenue with what led up to all of this chaotic scene.

good morning, pete. >> good morning to you, marcus and laura. we're talking about several gunshot fire exchange between several officers and the suspects. where we're standing on railroad avenue and whipple avenue and whipple road and railroad avenue, this is where those suspects tried to get away but eventually were taken into custody in surrounding areas, still an active scene on the railroad tracks. we'll show you some scene video where they were trying to look for suspects. you see officers with rifles pointed at a home as they are trying to look for suspects but according to union city police it happened around 11:30 p.m. you had officers stopping a car near e street and railroad avenue. and at some point a gunfire exchange takes place between several officers and the car. none of the officers were injured through this. one of the suspects drives the car to the area where we're standing at railroad avenue and whipple road. the suspects jump out and try to get away in surrounding

neighborhoods but police eventually locate them and take them into custody. one did sustain a gunshot injury and taken to a local hospital. that injury is being described by police as nonlife threatening. back out here live at the corner of railroad avenue and whipple road. we believe we're working to confirm to see if that is the car that they got out of because according to the information we're getting, this is the area where they tried to get away from police. but police say union city police say there's no ongoing danger to the public. still an ongoing investigation and hoping to get more information at some point this morning. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> still active out there. thank you very much, pete. >> at 5:02. continuing coverage now in the heartbreaking story we're fw following on the border. new pictures and audio from inside a texas facility fueling outrage and putting the trump administration on defense. tracie potts joins us live with the president's response this

be on the hook for thousands of dollars but a new state law took effect in january ending the collection of those fees. san mateo county expects to forgive more than $12 million in debt. >> a sonoma county cold case is moving forward today. the man accused of killing two young campers in their sleeping bags will face a judge. prosecutors say shawn michael galon shot and killed lindsay and her fiance back in 2004. the case was a cold case for years until now. authorities already arrested gallen last year in the deadly shooting of his brother. they named him as the lone suspect in the jenner case, one that we've covered for years now. today he could enter a plea in court. the so-called berkeley five are free men this morning. they were all found not guilty yesterday of assaulting a man at a pro trump rally in berkeley. you may remember this story. a riot broke out at mlk park in

march of last year. ten people were arrested and three people were injured. 30-year-old trump supporter was one of the injured. police officers and pair medeks testified that the men attacked him as he was being treated for injuries but jury did not agree. >> in the east bay area in this saturated place in the country, it is borderline impossible in my opinion for a right winger to get a fair and honest trial. >> the alameda county d a's office says the verdict speaks for itself and other than that no comment. >> at 5:06. we're learning frightening new information about a sexual assault on a popular jogging trail in palo alto. in march 29-year-old eduardo pulled a teen girl off the trail near deer creek road nextheadqu. according to the report, cha

various ra took the girl into bushes and tied her hands behind her back with dukt tape and put a gun to her head and sexually assaulted her. but she lied saying she had an infection so he wouldn't rape her. he then untied her hands and ran off. >> really shocking. i walk every day here and i've never seen any such people at all, all are like office going people. >> if convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. >> at 5:07. the search is on this morning for a man seen robbing a business. this is in san jose. police say on may 1st, right here, this man walked into the public storage facility there and held up a person and demanded the money from one of the employees. this is the store in east san jose. that man took cash and hopped into what you see right here, this is a silver chevy blazer

and sped off. >> housing advocates in concord want to get the word out about that city's new option to find unfair rental hikes. they approved a new rent review program for tenants whose rent gets raised more than 10% more than any one year. the first of two days of outreach meetings to try to let people know about their rights. >> sonoma county leaders say homeowners there are running into a more and more frequent problem during heavy rains. rupturing a privately owned and sometimes equated sewer lines that run under private property and connect up to the county. the agency wants to create a new ordinance requiring repairs when necessary. tonight they'll hold the first of three community immediaters to discuss the plan. >> right now, we're walking out the door to some of the most comfortable weather we'll have

today in parts of the bay area as we take a live look outside in san jose. a few clouds rolling by. if you're going out to the hiking trails or enjoying time at the parks, we'll see the clouds throughout the morning at 7:00 we'll be at 58 degrees as it clears and it will be warming up by 10:00 we're at 70 degrees. very nice. but as it warms up, you'll want to make sure you stay hydrated and have the sunscreen and you're prepared for temperatures in the 80s today. it will be slightly cooler at 6:00 as we approach sunset and the winds start to pick up. of course, always that reminder that we do have a high amount of grass pollen in the air. if you're allergic to grass pollen, make sure you take the medication before you head out to those trails. as we head over to mike, you're checking on a problem for the east bay. >> it's related to the one pete was talking about, the officer involved shooting over here in union city. the rest of the speed sensors look great as far as freeways go. we're looking at a little slowing and i'll show that to you in a second. a note out here, the railroad is

tariffs in case china responds to the first set. who started this is up for debate. president trump says china started it. we responded with trade tariffs. china says it will respond to our tariffs with tariffs on our goods. we're saying this morning we're ready with number two. we're ready to respond to their response. and this has made a mess of the stock market. tesla says it had another fire at its manufacturing plant. it had a series of small fires and this happened sunday and elon musk told employees, tesla has been the victim of sabotage. someone messed with computer system and stole data. he doesn't specifically link to the fire to the sabotage. we were talking about how much pressure there is on tesla to produce 5,000 cars a week. something elon musk promised will happen this month. it's not clear how the sabotage

might affect that goal. who did it? musk interest hints it was oth companies, there are a multitude of big deesele gas car competitors if they are willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they are willing to cheat in other ways. remember, musk also raised sabotage after one of his spacex rockets blew up in 2016. spacex speculated a sniper might have been responsible and hinted the competitors may have been responsible for that one too and wanted security footage from their competitors from a roof top hanger in the same area. turns out it was lick oxygen and wasn't sabotage. one of the things i'm pursuing that i'm still unclear about. if there was sabotage at the plant, did they calm the police? >> right. >> it's a crime. >> did they investigate further. >> we'll find out about this alleged sabotage. >> thanks, scott. >> a controversial sign posted at the dun kin donates is

causing a stir. dunkin' donuts is responding acknowledging the move was inappropriate. here's what the sign said, if you hear any of our staff shouting in a language other than english to call management with a name of of the employees and in return get a coupon for a free product. that sign is now going viral on social media. attracting national attention. the customers say they'll -- they are appalled. >> they are paid to recognize people and only be curt yus to me. even if they weren't, that's no reason to tell them they can't speak in their native language. >> they since removed the science and apologized saying the franchise owned informed us the sign was posted by their general manager based on her own personal judgment to ensure those standards are being met. while her intent was to address a customer service issue, the

franchise determined her approach was inappropriate and confirmed the sign has been removed. some pretty remarkable video to show you here this morning. this is a ladder meant to keep kids out of the pool. look how easily this 2-year-old just scales it there. his parents say it's completely undermines the safety feature meant to keep children from accidentally drowning. obviously this door would defeat the purpose giving the child the quick advantage to scale up that. they posted a clip on facebook to spread the word to other parents but their clip has been viewed more than 14 million times and hoping for some action or reaction from the company that makes that very concerning as we're approaching the hot weather here, so many kids close to the pool. >> you have to keep an eye on -- >> don't assume the pool is safe. >> you have to watch the kids too. >> my daughter is almost 2, she's training to climb to scale

there today in walnut creek. as we check out the south bay, upper 80s and even 90 degrees in gilroy. milpitas up to 83 degrees. for the east bay, 91 in concord and pleasanton a high of 88 degrees, 71 in oakland. in half moon bay, 61 degrees and redwood city 80 degrees. we'll still be windy and cool in san francisco with some mid-60s today and low to mid-80s for the north bay by later this afternoon. we still have ail lot of dry air and high pressure in place and as we go into the next couple of days, we'll see a stronger area of high pressure move in and that will keep us from getting our ocean breezes and morning clouds and fog. we're still seeing the coastal fog this morning and that will keep it comfortable for parts of the coast and the inner bay. as we make plans for the weekend, look at these numbers. napa valley will reach 100

degrees on saturday dangerous heat moves into the bay area by sunday. those temperatures coming down significantly but we have very hot weather on the way. let me know what your weekend plans are. we have a lot of pride celebrations going on around the bay area you'll probably want to make sure you're somewhere where it stays nice and cool like san francisco because look at these inland valley temperatures reaching 98 on friday, 100 on saturday. and then by sunday we're still hot, 90 degrees. san francisco, we'll be in the 70s for the weekend. >> mike, you found an incident? >> on my own. look at this. we're looking at the cameras here and there we go. that's a box truck. off the roadway southbound 101. just there as you're approaching the interchange with 280 and 680. a smooth drive but chp now knows about it. northbound 101 is the commute direction and we see volume build but no slowing through the same area by the 101 shield. here's the south bay coming

sear 45:25, a sad update to a story we've been following. the search crews in guatemala called off efforts for finding those victims after the devastating volcano erupted rocking that area a few weeks ago. the agency says that rescue efforts have been as you say spendsed because those areas were quote, uninhabitable and the search operations would be too risky. the violent eruption killed at least 110 people and another 197 are still missing.

let's go to kari hall. we like to smile because you have good news for us. >> it's going to be nice today, we're enjoying some of that nice pleasant weather. we start out with clouds as we look over san jose. as we go to sunnyvale, we'll still have the low 60s and clouds through 9:00, warming up into the mid to up 70s and low 80s today, in san jose, we're looking at a high of 83 degrees, not too bad but will start to turn hot, reaching low 90s. san francisco 65 degrees, 71 in oakland and livermore 87 degrees. we'll talk about the heat up ahead and the weekend forecast mike you're saying it's pretty reliable at the bay bridge. >> which means the metering lights are on. we see the backup forming for all lanes but look at the fast track lanes still moving so that means a little lighter, more gradual build.

the maze moves nicely as well towards the bay bridge. the metering lights keeping everything on the span moving well and west 580 shows the most severe backup starting just off the 24 interchange over the last few minutes. the rest of contra costa moves very smoothly, so does the rest of the bay. no major problems as we look at the transit systems there and rails are moving well guys, good options, back to you. >> sounds good, thank you mike. >> we want to get back to breaking news out of union city. an overnight gunfire between officers and suspects sending at least one person to the hospital this is near e street and railroad avenue. >> pete suratos joins us live from the scene this morning. he's got more on that story. >> reporter: yeah, an active scene here on railroad avenue and whipple road where the suspects tried to get away but they were eventually taken into custody by union city police. i want to show you behind me the area where they tried to get out. we're working to confirm that is the car they were trying to get away from following the officer

involved shooting but let's show you guys some scenes from when this all took place or around the time when this took place. according to union city police, they are saying this officer involved shooting began roughly around 11:30 p.m., you had officers stopping near e street and railroad avenue. at that point a gunfire exchange takes place between several officers and the suspect in that car. none of the officers were injured touring that exchange. at that point one of the suspects drives the car to an area where we're standing at railroad avenue and whipple road. the suspects judgment p out of the car and try to run into surrounding neighborhoods and all eventually located and taken into custody by union city police. one did sustain a gunshot injury and taken to a local hospital but the injury is being described as nonlife threatening. let's go and take you back out here to the scene. we see there's a car sitting there. as i mentioned we're still trying to confirm if that was indeed the get away car but police say there's no ongoing

danger to the public but still an ongoing investigation we'll plaf plan to give you more updates throughout the show. in union city, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> thank you. continuing coverage on the ongoing political battle over immigration. officer the past couple of days we've seen story after story unfold about the problems happening on our border. and today local leaders are trying to tackle the issue of immigration on the upcoming census. >> some santa clara county supervisors argued over the addition of the citizenship question on the 2020 census plan announcing a plan to fight it. >> kris sanchez live with the action they are planning on taking today. good morning, kris. >> reporter: at least one supervisor is telling us this is an intention to boost voter turnout. we don't know exactly how that fits into the plan but we suspect it has something to do with fighting a census question about immigration orn the 2020

census coming up in a few years. supervisor cindy chavez says and deputy county executive will unveil the full plan here at the county building at 9:00 ahead of the 10:00 supervisors meeting. i was digging through the agenda, can't find the item they were talking about but here's the back story. the justice department wants to include that citizenship question to enforce minority protections under the voting rights act. now, the 1950 census was the last one that had that citizenship question already california attorney general sued the federal government saying that california could be under counted which could shift federal funding and congressional seats out of the golden state. also the census bureau is already looking into how it can fill in the missing data if people choose not to answer the citizenship question using other government records. supervisor chavez says adding immigration question could severely impact not only california but santa clara

county in particular because there is a large population of undocumented immigrants. that announcement is happening here on the plaza at 9:00 this morning. and we'll try to get to the bottom of it for you. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you sofrp. >> at 5:35. new this morning, leaders at a prestigious private school investigating allegations of former worker there abused girls. according to the marin ixts j, the abuse happened in the 1970s ahead of the branson school in ross released a letter last week saying three former students came forward to report the abuse. the school is asking anyone with information to let investigators know. unfortunately in this case the statute of limitations has already expired. happening today, with school out of session in the north bay, authorities there conduct a drill meant to simulate an active shooter situation. this takes place at saints fran chis drake high school. the entire response training session ran all day today.

will run all day today with a second session planned for third. but there's a simulation taking place between noon and 3:00 p.m. and is supposed to include loud noises and role players. cleaning up the streets of oakland, look at that. needs to be done. city leaders expected to discuss what to do next about illegal dumping. it's a problem we've been following now for a while. libby shaft saying in the past five years dumping complaints have doubled there's a 311 number to report dumping. >> protesting cell to youers is a fight we've seen taking place across the bay area and now san mateo is debating the same issue. dozens showed up at the city council meeting last night to protest the cell towers, they say the towers drive down property values and pose harmful radiation risks. last month we were there when palo alto debated the same issue. palo alto ended up approving permits to are ver size zon to

install cell nodes at 11 poles. we know how hard it can be for renters and national housing group just released a new report indicating someone has to work three full-time minimum wage jobs to afford renting a two bedroom home. that amounts to a little less than $33 an hour. on average california renters only make $21 hourly. it ranks california as the second worst in the country when it comes to rental cost behind only hawaii. when it comes to key source for tax dollars, marin will see around increase at about the same rate as last year. the property taxes for the current fiscal year will bring in $78 billion. that's 5.4% increase over last year. in a previous fiscal year, marin county property tax revenues rose 5.3 because of flat numbers, they may have to resort to budget cuts. >> whether you need a bike

after an officer shoved shooting railroad at whipple. they may have that closed for possibly six hours or more. that will be a proob because that cuts off folks to and from mission boulevard. you can use dakota or industrial, if you have to travel there, whipple is likely cut off between 880 and mission boulevard just for the morning. we'll track that and also have a crash west 24, temporarily closing the ramp over there towards tunnel road. that's highway 13 north of the freeway. fz not a whole big commute spot but we'll track that closer by the bay bridge as the backup because it's the bay bridge toll plaza. >> there you go. >> right now, we're going to head for the weekend. i thought it was perfect. make sure you have plans to stay cool. look at what we're expecting through the next several days, inland areas go from 86 degrees

today to 100 degrees on saturday. and we also have the pride festivities going on in and around san francisco. san francisco will be the place to be. it will be 68 degrees on thursday and friday 73 degrees. some low 70s all throughout the weekend with sunshine. perfect weather there. you may be kicking off the weekend at music in the park in san jose. tony, tony tony will be at the park at 90 degrees then it does cool down gradually. it's going to be hot. this weekend will be in the low 80s in yosemite and hot. but let me show you a place that's going to be even hotter, lake shasta, 101 degrees by the end of the weekend. mostly sunny skies and you may be able to cool off just a bit in carmel valley where the highs there will reach in the low to mid-80s. we'll talk about what's ahead for san jose for today that's

churchhill and palo alto intersection. they hope to start renovation and have the upgrades completed by the year 2028. >> a live look at sfo this morning. if you've been there, you know that the weather delays can be brutal. now alaska airlines is considering rerouting some of those flights to oakland and san jose instead. the airline would then bus the passengers back to sfo. they are able to make this move easily because they have the necessary employs employees and equipment at all three major bay area airports. alaska airlines recently purchased virgin america. many cities are still trying to hash out their own rules. walnut creek leaders plan to debate the issue to determine how to regulate pot plants on private property and maybe banning nondelivery cannabis related businesses. that gets under way at 6:00 tonight. 5:45 right now. the white house is not backing

right there. it was bad for those people trying to make it through. emergency crews are asking drivers to just stay off the roads and out of the flood waters, people living near small streams and rivers are being told to be ready to move to higher ground. it is a similar scene in wisconsin as well, several days of heavy rain caused deadly flooding there. at least one person died. it happened in an extremely rural area so no evacuation orders went out. the state of emergency was declared in several counties in the northwest part of the state. >> marine mammal experts are heading to the north bay today to try to figure out how a blue whale died at the national sea social security shore. the marine mammal center and academy of sciences are working together to perform an animal autopsy today. the animal washed ashore yesterday afternoon and marine mammal center says this is the only tenth blue whale death they responded to in 43 years. so they are really hoping to
