there will be spots as we go into the weekend where it will be hot. a wide range in temperatures across the bay area. we're starting out with those clouds right now. here is a live look outside over san jose, go to san jose downtown. we'll start to see those clouds clearing out by later this morning. we do start out with upper 50s but upper 70s by early afternoon. we're heading into the mid-80s. in fremont that morning commute starts out cloudy as well. you'll get peeks of sunshine and highs in the low 70s. we'll take a look at full microclimate forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, you called chp to report something. >> 101 report add person with a disabled vehicle. i saw them walking around but they got back in their vehicle. chp knows about that and we thank them at the center. doesn't slow, off the center divide but still worried about that person, of course. many of us have been in that situation. that can be nerve-racking."

mild slowing, lighter traffic as we saw in that shot. silicon valley not really seeing anything untoward for the commute. a nice drive for tri-valley and hayward southbound. 880 a little slowing. same for oakland past coliseum mild slowing and metering lights on at the bay bridge. >> thanks, mike. 6:02. to washington, d.c., where a lot of questions about what's next for thousands of migrant children who were separated from their families and who are now in detention alone. we've been following the immigration battle all week and the president signed an executive order allowing families to stay together after they illegally crossed the border going ahead. but now the fate of the families already here are in the hands of congress. "today in the bay" susan mcginnis live on capitol hill. this is something that could go terribly wrong, susan. >> reporter: well, yes, it certainly could, chris. good morning. a lot of relief here on the hill

and everywhere around the country that the president did backtrack on that with the executive order, no longer separating families at the border. it doesn't address families already separated. so the government still needs to answer for that. now congress is set for a couple of votes this afternoon on an immigration bill hoping to pass broader reform. >> the cries of the children were heard. >> i think anybody with a heart will feel strongly about it. we don't like to see families separated. >> the president's executive order allows families illegally crossing families to stay together crossing the board. >> this is wrong. >> it's a response to worldwide outcry over separation of migrant parents and children. while showing compassion, the president made his position on immigration clear at a rally in minnesota. >> they are not sending their finest, i can tell you. we're sending them the hell back.

i will never sacrifice safety and security of the american people. >> reporter: now it's up to congress to agree on immigration reform. >> i'm committed to working with administration. my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will hopefully do that. >> as competing bills face an uphill battle in congress, the future remains uncertain for thousands of children separated from their parents. >> families together in indefinite detention isn't something i think is sustainable in this country either. >> at the least families crossing the border and awaiting processing will wait together. >> lawmakers on the hill are still set to vote on immigration this afternoon. but as of last night, marcus and kris, there was still a cram bell for support to try to get enough votes to pass one of these bills. >> all right. we'll be watching that. thank you very much, susan. >> 6:04 here in the bay area people are coming together in support of migrant families. more than 600 gathered in the north bay pushing for answers

will be a logistical nightmare. our coverage on what's next for migrant families continues on our website. we'll actually send out a push alerts when updates on the crisis come in. you can head over to the website, nbcbayarea.com for that instant information. people in the east bay worried about toxic material dumped where they live. all stems from the clean up hunters naval shipyard in san francisco now across the bay. pete suratos on "today in the bay" to explain what happened. good morning, pete. >> good morning, kris. rightfully so, residents of contra costa county are concerned about allegations that possible radioactive materials may have been dumped in a landfill just north of where we're standing in concourt. this comes after allegations last month that data from

tetratech was falsified in the cleanup at radioactive soil at hunters naval shipyard in san francisco. potentially radioactive materials may have been dumped in keller canyon landfill in contra costa county. our investigative unit reported on this just a couple weeks ago. they are saying the navy retesting hunter naval shipyard. they are beginning with parcel g, showing you a map, shoes you 40 acre land that will turn into parks and homes in the area. they are going to retest that. also the city of san francisco plans to test parcel a, you see that on the map as well, where people are already living in condos. as for capitol cost residents weighing in on their issue, there's going to be a town hall to show the viewers. that information if you want to weigh in, take place at the ambrose community center at baypoint, 6:30. that's free. of course if you want to learn more info on our investigation into this issue, go to our

website on nbcbayarea.com. live in concourt, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you. a lot of folks taking advantage of that opportunity. >> 6:07 right now in sonoma county prosecutors say the man behind a gruesome cold case will be in court today, shawn michael from forestville accused of shooting and killing two young campers in their sleeping bag on a beach in jenner in 2004. if you lived in the bay area for long you probably remember this case lindsey and and her fiancee jason allen were killed. authorities arrested him last year in a deadly shooting of his own brother. several weeks after that arrest they named him as the lone suspect in the case. marin county, another active shooter training drill will take place at francis drake high school in san anselmo. the entire response training

session will run all day. so if you see emergency vehicles or you hear loud noises, particularly on the high school, don't be alarmed. no need to call 911. that simulation is between noon and 3:00 this afternoon. >> happening today, golden gate bridge leaders reportedly consider a new option. this to maintain many cables that run up and down that span. the problem is there's no safe and efficient way to clean, monitor or paint the cables. today the ij report district members will hear an idea to use rolling trolleys there. now, the engineering company wants to develop and test the trolleys, which would include extended platforms moving up and down a pulley system. if the idea flies, the new contraptions could be in place by the end of next year. dump the pump is what caltrains are encouraging everyone to do today.

outside. live look outside in san jose, mostly clear skies. we go to the neighborhood of willow glen, 61 at 10:00 and making it into the low 80s today. not bad today but it's about to get hot this weekend. i'll have a look at those numbers. before you make plans you'll want to check it out. it's coming up in less than five minutes. >> kari didn't take many minutes for the crew to arrive. the disabled vehicle we called in from the station, they got help. i'll show you the slowdown in the area and some clearing for oakland. >> thank you, mike. 6:16 now. we're learning about another stolen gun in san francisco. this time, the weapon was snatched from the back of an suv belonging to san francisco sheriff's deputy. it happened outside a fitness center in sunol. grabbed a bag visible in the back seat. inside was the deputy's private weapon, which he also used on

6791. instagram has more than 1 billion users worldwide. up from 800 million last september. the app dedicated to long form video, expands beyond photo sharing roots. it will initially be part of the instagram app but also available as a stand alone app. amazon teaming up with the workshop behind "sesame street." it's doing to to develop live action and children's shows. "sesame street," i should clear, is not part of the deal. apple developing a slate of original content as it tries to complete against netflix, amazon, hulu. not revealing when the shows will be released or hu you'll be able to watch them on the streaming service but this the second one we've heard about as far as the content after the deal with oprah winfrey. back over to you.

>> oprah winfrey involved. i'm going to be watching so much tv. thank you, courtney. new, it's the official start of summer. thousands of people gathered at stone hinge for summer solstice. more than 5,000 people at the monument in england to greet the start of the longest day of the year. the sun appears -- look at that, just beautiful there. this before 5:00 a.m. you can hear the crowd cheering and applauding. summer solstice is one of the rare occasions the stones are open to the public. they believe the solstice has been celebrated at stonehenge for thousands of years. what a beautiful forward-looking statement start out the summer. that was a beautiful shot there. it really was. >> so pretty. open the gates, the tradition has been going on since god was a boy. >> the final. >> probably see that through the

bay area. >> we've been in summer for three whole hours and complaining about the heat. parts of the bay area heating up. we're still seeing low clouds over san francisco right now. this will clear out fairly quickly as you check out the seven-day forecast, it's coming up at the bottom of the screen. maybe you're heading out to work this morning, heading to the fruitvale bart station. it will still be mostly cloudy through 10:00, temperatures upper 50s, light jacket early. heading home temperatures will be much more comfortable and very warm in martinez. check out how temperatures go from low 60s in the morning to 78 at noon and 86 by early afternoon. we're heading to the low 90s for concord and antioch. oakland 69 degrees, santa rosa we're looking at a high of 84 and 82 today in san jose. looking at our wind speeds, our light winds coming from the northwest still bring in just enough of an on-shore flow, our

customers. sometimes the promises aren't kept. amy said that happened to her. she traded in two iphones in 2016 and expected to get a credit for them. offense the next year and a half she called verizon six times to get her money. when it didn't come through she called us. a week later she got a rebate just under $500. they resolved the issue but declined to comment further. verizon never provided a reason why this happened. i plan to contact them directly to find out why. we can't stress this enough, if you trade in old phones for credit, save those receipts like amy did. you should never give a phone to a wireless store employee without getting written proof of the transaction. if you send your old phone in by mail, ask for delivery confirmation and hang onto all those records. if you've got problems with a mobile phone provider or any

this is a live look outside downtown burlingame where the cloud cover may be providing a little relief so far. thanks so much for joining us, i'm kris sanchez, laura garcia is off. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get to kari hall for what to expect today, a heat up in some places. >> there will be places to find cooler weather, maybe going to reggae park in san mateo. our highs in san mateo reaching 0 degrees and cooling down nicely in time for the music to start. or if you're going to the alameda county fair in pleasanton, it's going to be warming up for the tri-valley. inland areas reaching into the mid-80s by the afternoon. here is a look at all of our highs today. 88, 91 in concord. in napa, 87 while san francisco stays in the cool mid-60s. we'll talk about the week ahead in seven minutes. mike, schtick still tracking the fire in oakland.

>> breaking news on the traffic front because we spotted it from the traffic camera. still a little smoke. if we hang onto this shot we may see a bart train running by as it emerges from the tunnel and over to the stations. we saw it going on the track, bart looks okay, snok dying down so not as much of a distraction. we'll hand it off to the news department, we have a chopper there. bay bridge could see smoke as well but wasn't a problem. we have a lighter volume of traffic and everybody moving smootly to and from san francisco. this is where the fire was suit of the bay bridge again. our choppers heading out. light build through alameda heading through the area, toward contra costa county. a couple of crashes now reported there through baypoint. they may be the same incident. i'll check that for highway 4. you will see slowing toward concord. the rest of the bay an easy drive for south bay. peninsula no problems. tracking for you guys. back to you.

>> thank you, mike. 6:32 now. breaking news shaking up silicon valley this morning. a bombshell announcement by santa clara-paced intel. ceo brian krzanich is out. he resigned unexpectedly after the company said they learned he had a consensual past relationship with an employee. that violated company policies. chief financial officer robert swan will take over for the time degree. the company will launch an extensive search for a permanent replacement. also new this morning, people all over are mourning the loss of the bay area gorilla who really gained fame around the world. you may remember ko ko, the gorilla that knew sign language. she died this week in the santa cruz mountains. this is video we found of her playing with kittens. >> what a good ko ko. live in stanford this morning, sharon, the video is so nice to see. ko ko also touched a lot of lives, including yours. ko also

lives, including yours. >> reporter: she did. my kids learned all about her in school. this is touching many children at home. i'm sure they are sad to hear the news, just waking up and hearing the news. people around the world just amazed by koko's communication skills. koko was born in san francisco in the san francisco zoo. dr. penny patterson taught her sign language at the stanford university project that started in 1974. many celebrities met koko including mr. rogers. she's been the star in documentaries, national geographic. the late robin williams met her. she mastered sign language. >> i have three gorillas. they think i'm insulting my

but there are a lot of unresolved questions this morning. in a rare retreat the president signed an executive order reversing his own policy of separating migrant children from their parents. some say this change of policy does not show a change of heart. the order still calls for zero tolerance on illegal immigration. experts say there are concerns about how we will reconnect children who are already separated from their families. >> it's not clear they even have records of all those children, where they are located, how to reunite them with parents. >> some call the past month a moment history will look back on as something like japanese internment camps during world war ii. happening "today in the bay" area legal experts will talk about the enforcement, ethical questions, all tied to family separations at the border. the santa clara university school of law will lead that discussion along with members from political science, ethnic studies department as well. it is all being posted on

facebook live. it starts at noon on the campus of santa clara university. new this morning, disturbing accusations of human trafficking rates. authorities say the victims were recruited from a local high school. sam lindsey and his wife are from lake county. according to the press democrat, authorities say they were recruiting at least one high school student into prostitution. they also sold at least three other victims into the sex trade. at least one of the victims was a minor. there are many other victims. police say the couple is now held on $1 million bail. we're also learning new details this morning about the bay area man who was captured trying to scale the white house fence. we told you about this story yesterday here on "today in the bay" and police say alex miner tried to get over the fence of the white house on monday. it was recorded by a tourist

camera. according to those charge documents he told investigator president trump is the antichrist and he hoped to make his way into the oval office and slap him in the face. we into to the suspect's father, lincoln miner, who lives in danville. he says he's been trying for years to get his son help for ptsd. >> i want professional help for him to help find out what's google on. i think -- going on. he does, too. maybe it's gone from ptsd to something else. >> his son was a marine veteran who served on the front lines in afghanistan and has never been the same since. >> how about a new place to play and designed by people who would know the best. hundreds of people will gather to build a new state-of-the-art play gowned in menlo park. garfield community school.

mateo bridge and volume builds a tad as well. west 92. >> those pictures don't tell the story of what the weather will be like this weekend. >> right. we start out with clouds. we know it's going to be a fairly cool day. that will be limited to the coast and parts of the inner bay. the inland areas are going to get hot. if you're going to the pride festivities this weekend we're going to have nice weather in san francisco. mid-60s, a lot of neighborhood block parties going on. on friday we have the trans march. on saturday the dike march. on saturday gay pride parade in san francisco and into the 70s. beautiful weather there. it will be hot if you're kicking off your weekend in san jose with tony, toni, tone! in the park. 87 degrees, bring a bottle of water and wear a big hat so you can have shade. looking at inland forecast for saturday, 100 degrees. dangerous heat. you want to make plans where you

can find somewhere nice and cool to go, maybe going out swimming. the bay will be at 86 and 75 for the coast. much more comfortable weather for some of our beaches. it will be a little cooler on sunday but not by much. 90 degrees for inland valleys. if you're going out to sonoma save mart 350, it is going to be sizzling there. really hot temperatures near 100 degrees for both friday and saturday. much cooler on sunday. here is a look at squaw valley if you're going to sierra this weekend. going hiking, low temperatures there in the 80s throughout the weekend. you can cool down in santa barbara with much cooler weather, upper 60s through the weekend. we'll take a look at temperatures in the south bay coming up in three minutes. >> thank you, kari. coming up next on "today in the bay," the future of dockless bikes and scooters in the south bay. >> fourth of july is right around the corner. a lot of folks heading out of

and fears that radioactive material may have illegally ended up in keller canyon landfill in pittsburg. today's supervisor will hold a public forum for people who live near the landfill. that will happen at 6:30 at ambrose community center in baypoint. >> if you live or even work in san jose, maybe you noticed it over the past week or so. i'm talking about the new bike sharing options leading to occasional stray dockless bike being left randomly on sidewalks and even the lawn. today san jose transportation leaders will hold the meeting, parks demonstration, parks community hearing. people will be able to see and try the bicycles and scooters. but they plan to make public feedback and present possible resolutions and regulations. a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning where later today bridge district leaders will get their month update on bridge traffic along with bus and ferry ridership.

so where are folks headed? according to documents released ahead of tonight's meeting southbound traffic in march and april dropped slightly during the morning rush. over the last year traffic volume is exactly the same. meanwhile ferry ridership is up more than 4% from one year ago. bus service is down slightly. protecting the elderly community. this week leaders in several bay area counties are leading a regional effort to raise public awareness about financial abuse of elders especially as the housing cost sky rockets. alameda, contra costa and san francisco counties launch campaign called bart commuters, no abuse, report abuse. you may have seen some of those signs on bart trains. according to national committee for prevention of elderly abuse, about 5% of the older population suffers from some form of abuse. >> new this morning thinking of heading out for the fourth of july weekend, you will not be alone. it will be busier than this.

a live look at bay bridge toll plazas folks are hitting the road for work. a record number of people traveling this year, nearly 2.5 million last year will go by roadway from july 4th. because of wednesday aaa expects road congestion will be terrible tuesday. travel times expected to double in major metro areas. on july 3rd with the worst traffic in the afternoon hours after we sneak out early. good news for travelers. gas expected to go up a few cents for the fourth of july holiday which will be lower than prices over memorial day week. air fares are lower than they have been in five years. >> probably not too bad. >> the worst day of the week. >> it is. >> when you travel on the holiday weekend, you know there's going to be a lot of traffic so you plan for that. >> the holiday. >> plan for that heat update,

from 59 at half moon bay to 92 in antioch. santa rosa 84 and san jose 82 degrees. live look outside in san jose as you're getting dressed this morning, it's a good idea to break out summer gear. lightweight, light colored clothing for inland areas where you might need short sleeves and shorts. also make sure you have sunglasses, too. winds coming in from the northwest will give us a very light on-shore flow. will only cool off the coast and parts of inner bay. as we go into tomorrow winds shift offshore and we'll not get that ocean breeze. all around the bay area heating up with the most intense heat on saturday. big changes on the way by early next week. we'll have a few days of hot weather. first day of summer 90 inland, 98 tomorrow and 100 on saturday. for san francisco looking like a nice weekend for pride festivities. mike, you have a crash affecting some of our bridges?

welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> we have breaking news for you this morning. pg&e is telling investors it expects to take a massive financial hit from the deadly north bay wildfires.

now, in a statement the utility expects to be held liable for at least some of the damage from those fires. the company is warning it will record a $2.5 billion charge to cover expected losses. pg&e also says that that number marks the low end of the potential financial losses. the utility may also be liable for damages far higher than that. >> the immigration battle is still dominating headlines this morning. here in the bay area people are gathering together in support of the immigrant families. more than 600 people gathered in san rafael yesterday pushing for answers from the trump administration. ♪ >> that happened at marin civic center last night during a families belong together rally. speakers are demanding that separated families be reoouunit but that is going to be a tough order. migrant children sent to 17 states including california.

koko the gorilla first gained notoriety. sad news as the world learns she has died. koko was born at san francisco zoo. she made a lot of friends along the way, human and nonhuman alike. from kittens to mr. rogers to comedian robin williams, koko mastered the ability to sign and understand 2,000 words. a san francisco researcher started that program in the early '70s. she lived the last part of her life at a preserve in santa cruz mountains. that's where she died on tuesday at the age of 46. if you're heading to the beach any time soon, you need to do a little homework. the san mateo journal reports some bay area beaches do not necessarily meet the minimum contamination levels. peninsula leaders say people need to do research ahead of time to make sure the water quality is safe at their favorite spot. some areas in the winter led to
