why a heat advisory is in place. how much of a warm-up? already in the upper 50s at this hour. san jose 59 degrees. oakland 56. palo alto 54. show you how quickly the temperature trend climbs in terms of temperatures for today. by about 10:00 a.m., already at 77 degrees. by 12:00, around the time you head out for lunch, it will be 85 degrees and we are expecting 90s for the south bay for today. i'll talk who's expecting to see triple digit heat and things to look out for this weekend especially if you're hanging out outdoors. coming up in a bit, send things over to mike first. >> vianey, looking at an early commute. things are very light, you'd imagine, on this friday. green sensors all around. at the very least, the getaway traffic starts heading up in towards this central valley and even the tri-valley, in fact, for 580 start toing at about maybe noon, 1:00. be careful of that. getting towards the city no problems. down towards the bay bridge.

over here looking at contra county, a smooth, steady drive here approaching the dublin interchange. right over to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up on 501, the breaking news in the south bay. a massive fire erupted in a san jose building overnight and it was very close to other buildings as well. a lot of damage and cleanup this morning, and "today in the bay" is live there off of west and carlos street with a look at the aftermath. good morning, ross. >> reporter: good morning. this is all moving quickly. let me catch you up to date what we've learned in the past couple of minutes or so. the fire crews have given the all clear. some of the crews moved out already with the truck you see across the street, that's a restoration crew that arrived to try to board up the building for now. they're about to -- police are about to open west san carlos street in a couple minutes or so. there were very tense moments here earlier this morning,

because the fire was so close to homes that were all around it. this is what it looked like just after 2:00 this morning. firefighters quickly called in a second alarm as bright red flames were shooting out of the top of the abandon building's roof. crews on ladder trucks and shot water down on to the fire and into the building. they were desperately keep the blaze from spreading to a town house development behind the fire, the old warehouse and apartment buildings under correction beside the fire and the folks in the homes were told to shelter in place. we are told this is at least the second time there has been a fire at this site. they believe basically this time the building is probably a loss. and it is also known to be the site of a homeless encampment, but they do not know the cause of this fire. we're told the building will be turned over to a team of arson investigators to figure out what happened. not necessarily something suspicious, just too find out

what the cause of the fire was. for now, live in san jose, for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. and now back for more of that breaking news. this time this in san francisco. that is where police are investigating a double shooting in the mission district right now. >> "today in the bay's" reporter is there live near 24th street, b.a.r.t. station and pete, what are police telling you at this point? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, guys. still an active investigation. we know one person died as result of this double shooting. behind me you see an active investigation. a handful of detectives and san francisco police on the scene congregating in this area conducting an investigation is. show you video from earlier this morning. now, police were alerted to this roughly around 2:30 a.m. through a shot spotter activation. essentially that means when gunshots are fired in a certain area or a neighborhood, police in the area are alerted to this and then can get to the scene

anywhere between 20 to 45 minutes after those shots are fired. and when they did show up they found there were two people suffering gunshot wounds here on the 2700 block of harrison street. one of the victims, of course, dies from their injuries, despite life-saving measures. that person did die from injuries. the other victim taken to san francisco general with life-threatening injurieinjurie. back out here to the scene. you can still see police tape. this area is taped off. you see police in the area. no word whether they are looking for a suspects or if a suspect is in custody. when we get that information we'll bring that to you in the newsroom. >> be safe out there, pete. 5:04. to a developing story out of napa. a man shoots at officers near veterans memorial park around 5:30 last night. police say he asked for two specific officers before opening fire. police then shot a bean bag round at that man, a non-lethal

round, and he dropped the gun as was taken into custody. fortunately, no one seriously hurt. and san jose leaders say they need to do more to keep homeless people out of the areas cleared out earlier in the year. if you live in san jose you probably know there is always a problem with homeless encampments near story road. caltrans conducted sweeps earlier this year. i was there. a councilman says a new camp is already growing in it's place. he said it is leading to new problems including fires and illegal dumping there. the city councilman plans to hold a news conference later this morning. 5:05 with continuing coverage to the immigration crisis still understand folding on our border. after seeing one bill voted down a delay on the second vote until next week. meantime thousands of migrant families remain in limbo this mo morning. good morning, susan.

>> reporter: hey, good morning, marcus. we have news for you. the president has been tweeting this morning and he appears to be officially throwing in the towel saying that these bills lack votes and not any bill that will pass, that republicans are wasting their time trying to come up with a bill and it's not going to happen in this congress. he's talking about waiting until more republicans are elected and that then te they can push through broader immigration reform. no word from house republicans who are planning to spend the weekend hashing out a new bill. the protests go on against president trump's immigration policy that's keeping families apart. while the president reversed the policy and won't separate migrant children from parents crossing illegally into the u.s. he didn't address the thousands of children already separated. on capitol hill, republican lawmakers failed to pass legislation.

the. >> the bill is not passed. >> reporter: one bill overwhelmingly voted down another moved to next week. >> the president's going to even like the new bill better than this bill. >> reporter: but the president is already blaming democrats. >> hoopholes in our immigration laws, all supported by extremist open border democrats. it's a whole big con job. meantime, people are suffering because of the democrats. >> reporter: democrats say they want tighter borders but not this way. >> we don't think we have to put children in cagings to do it. there is a better way, and the president is either not knowing, not caring, delusional and in denial about his own policies. >> reporter: as lawmakers debate and families wait, a new "time" magazine cover puts the family separation practice at the president's feet. so the president will make remarks. he's expected to this afternoon on immigration. joined by angel families.

the families that lost loved ones to violence from undocumented immigrants. marcus, we expect to hear more from him about this officially announcing that he lacked the votes and we'll watch to see if the gop agrees and canceling those meeting this weekend and plans a new bill for next week. >> something we have to keep our eyes on. changes every time you look around. >> true. maybe the next time we talk to you, susan. thank you very much. happening today, bay area clergy members are traveling to the border to protest separation of undocumented families. 40 religious and community leaders will travel from the bay area by bus. dozens others are going to drive themselves. the caravan leaves at 7:00 this morning. they plan a weekend of prayer and demonstration along the border near san diego. happening tomorrow, bay area congresswoman barbara lee and jackie speier as well will be among some two dozen u.s. lawmakers visiting facilities will detainees are being held in texas.

lawmakers will get an up close look at the holding area. our coverage continues online at nbcbayarea.com. there we have an entire section dedicated to the crisis at the border and other immigration issues at the top of people's minds right now. san francisco's chief of police is reportedly speaking out about potential staffing cuts tied to the new budget plan. the examiner reports budget experts are recommending cutting some 100 officers during the next two years. that move would save about $17 million. last night chief bill scott addressed concerns to supervisors. next wednesday, a committee is supposed to finalize that budget, and a full board vote is expected to happen one month from now. >> happening now, everyone is being told to avoid using cars at least carpools today because of a spare the air alert. this is the first of the year, by the way. a live look at the bay bridge this morning where hopefully folks are traveling at least two by two.

the bay area air quality says hot winds mixed with high temperatures and exhaust from cars will cause unhealthy air conditions. take public transportation or carpool today. and keeping a close eye on that spare the air alert. 57 degrees, on the milder side, for san francisco. 56 hayward and san jose 59. won't need a heavy coast, nt or a sweater. temperatures will get warmer. the next two days north bay moderate. east and south bay extremely unhealthy. it you're planning to be outside, limit outdoor activity. take breaks. as always, be careful if you have plans to barbecue or anything. we also have a couple fire watches in effect for areas in the north bay and east bay hills. another update what you can expect not just for the weekend also for the next seven days coming up. a check in with mike. >> vianey, looking over here

before the bell we turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters this morning. good to see you, landon. good morning. >> marcus and kris, good friday morning. good to see you both as well pap good day to see markets. opened higher 150 points recovering some of yesterday's losses sparked by the ongoing straight issues between the u.s., china and other countries. the dow extending its losing streak to eight days. that's the longest stretch since march of last year. oil prices are also in focus trading up more than 1%. opec members meet in austria to reach a deal to increases production. the dow falling nearly 200 points yesterday. the nasdaq dropping 68. meanwhile, the jeep cherokee is the most american made car of 2018. cars.com puts out an annual american made index looking at which cars are manufactured here, have the most american parts and support the most american factory jobs. four of the top ten american made vehicles are actually

produced by a foreign based automaker. the jeep cherokee is produced in illinois but jeep is a division of chrysler based in london. the honda odyssey and ridgeline made in alabama were number two and three on the list. and movie pass is adopting surge pricing. deeming a film very popular charging subscribers an additional $2. it takes effect next month. annual passes are exempt. and adding a "bring a friend" option for an additional amount, see an imax or 3d film, which aren't currently included in any plan. back to you. >> sign up for that annual fee then. we all love our dogs and today is bring your dog to work day, folks. that means a lot of us get the opportunity to share our work spaces with our furry friends. i mean, what could be a better day than that? at least 20% of workers will celebrate today by bringing their pooch to the office.

rescue a pup. weather for today is going to be on the hotter side. if you will be taking out your dog on a walk, it's important to remember that if it's too hot for your feet in terms of stepping outside to take them on a walk, it's too hot for their paws and they can easily burn especially on the hot asphalt. be careful and responsible. and 57 degrees now in san francisco. hayward 56. san jose already at 59. show you the 24-hour temperature change, because we're already running several degrees warmer in spots including livermore. check this out. seven degrees warmer at this hour than we were yesterday. that's only setting us up for a day of 90s and, yes, triple-digit heat. why a heat advisory remains in place through saturday at about 8:00 p.m. temperatures between 94 to 104 further inland. which means drink lots of water and high fire danger. talk about some of those areas. there is a red flag warning for the sek meant oh area, but i want to show you spots that will

be affected here in the bay area. vallejo will have a red flag warning in effect. that kicks in tonight at midnight and remains in place for the weekend ahead. along with fairfield as well. the reason? tracking the possibility of seeing very dry northeasterly winds between 10 and 20 miles per hour. pair that up with triple-heat temperatures, that keeps the hills under a large threat. be very mindful if you are barbecuing or doing anything of that nature in those areas especially if you're around dry brush. right now very dry out there. cupertino, 90-degree temperatures. 91 degrees in san jose. look at the triple-digit temperatures for the east bay. danville, 101. concord, 101. oakland in the 80s and even in the 80s for the peninsula. san francisco topping out into the 70s anden the north bay also in the 90s. again, spare the air alert, remaining in place the next two

days through the weekend. tracking unhealthy air quality. for san francisco, predict ing high of 78 tomorrow. maybe warmer. and sunday, keeping the triple-digit heat. we cool down by about ten degrees and 90s. notice our temperature trend starts to kind of go down a little bit in the 80s. then back down into the 70s. nice welcome to the summer for sure. first weekend of summer will be hot. mike? >> no joke. summer kicks off and so do temperatures. over here, the commute hasn't kicked off yet. s friday. expect it to be gradual, kicking in later and lighter. it's the afternoon, see a lot more folks. moves from the overall green to the contra costa county area things are smooth. going the opposite way gets slow around noon, 1:00. things literally tough. bay bridge now, cash lanes. slow there.

garcia. >> and i'm bhsmarcus washington >> and over to the weather with vianey arana. >> offshore flow kicks in this weekend kicking up winds and a ridge of high pressure. that's going to elevate the heat danger. right now in san jose, 59 degrees. wind speeds fairly calm. hazy skies in some areas. that's expected to burn off by the afternoon. right to the temperature trend, affecting your afternoon and into the weekend. by 12:00 already at 80 degrees jumping to about 85. in san jose, a predicted high of 90 degrees, but one of the warmest spots in concord, climbing into the upper 80s and triple digit heat by the afternoon. talking 101, 102. that heat advisory is through tomorrow peecevening because of hotter temperatures. 94 to 100 for inlet areas.

beaches extremely packed i assume as people try to escape the heat. over to mike. >> good warning for a congestion at 92 as well as highway 17, vianey. over the water of the bay bridge showing a backup. this just formed over the last seven minutes and fast track lanes only. metering lights turned on, even though it doesn't yet say that. judging by the backup in the lanes. lighter for cash lanes. typical on a friday here. easy drive through san rafael. definitely let you know, be careful out there. a spare the air day. carpool if you can. try mass transit. no delays reported throughout the area or the system. and a smooth flow of traffic now. back to you. breaking news. >> thank you. that breaking news out of san francisco first. still a very active crime scene right now. two people shot in the mission. one of them we know did not survive. all of this happened around 2:30

this morning at harrison street between 23rd and 24th. shot spotter technology picked up that shooting. that technology detects when gunshots are fired. when officer arrived they found two people who had been shot. one died at the scene. the other person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the scene is not too far from the 24th street b.a.r.t. station, but no impact to traffic at the station at this point. and peour reporter will have a live report in the next half hour. more breaking news to tell you about this morning in san jose. overnight, a building fire in downtown leaving behind a lot of damage and fire crews there, they've been battling that throughout the morning. "today in the bay's" reporter is live on west carlos street with a look at the aftermath. >> hi there. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the fire gutted this building behind me. that massive fire, not much left

of it indeed. fire crews have given the all-clear in the last hour or so. made sure nobody was inside the building and they'll turn tove tove -- it everybody 0er to investigators shortly. they don't know how the fire started's when firefighters arrived just after 2:00 this morning, this is what they saw. 30-foot flames shooting up through the abandon building. threw everything they had at the fire. ladder trucks shooting down on it. critical to keep the blaze from spreading. a town house is behind it and a high-rise apartment building under construction right next door. >> soon as we got here, already had fire through the roof of the building behind us. went to a second alarm, just because of the exposure of the seven-story high rise next to it. so it was a defensive fire. all exterior lines because of the fire involved throughout the building.

>> reporter: now, this is a known homeless encampment site, firefighters tell us and at least the second fire they have fought at this same site. they will have a team of arson investigators coming here to look for the cause after it gets a little more light, just in a couple hours or so this morning. meanwhile, that truck there is a restoration crew standing by, we're told, to board up the building once they get the go-ahead for that, and police reopened west san carlos street in time for rush hour but are still looking for the cause of the fire. for now, live in san jose for "today in the bay." >> thank you for that update. 5:35, happening now, neighbors believe someone purposely set an early morning fire that started outside a san jose home. this happened on barlow avenue not far from interstate 680. an alert neighbor banged on the door where that fire happened waking the people inside. a neighbor tells us what he saw. >> i was walking going towards

this area, i saw a gentleman running all in black and i know he is an arsonist, man. he started the fire. i know he did. >> the firefighters saved the home but the flames did damage two cars outside. they are not saying if they believe that that fire was set on purpose. new this morning, at 5:36, if you live in eastern contra costa county, a small earthquake. 3.1. a smaller 2.8 rattled things a little more about five minutes later and then a few others around the same time as well, but no damage, reports, or injury reports at this point. developing right now, san jose police are investigating a deadly shooting in the city. this happened yesterday afternoon in south san jose at a home on misty glen court. the victim is in his 50s.

he has three children as well. friends say he was a doctor who immigrated from vietnam five years ago, but he was not currently working in the bay area. neighbors are really shocked ak this. about this. >> i don't know how he got shot. who shot him. that's really -- that is so sad. >> this is a quiet neighborhood. never no problems around here. >> right now police are saying a little about that investigation but no arrests made. san francisco police revisiting a cold case involving several murders more than 40 years ago. a new sketch shows an age progression of a suspect known as "the doodler." in the mid-70s, five men killed in the golden gate park area. at the same time, five men assaulted. now investigators want to track down the doodler too see if he

is connected with any of the other murders. and an nbc follow. radioactive soil or not? what people in pittsburg want to know. our investigative unit did a report leaving hunter's point and winding up in landfill in the east bay. last night some 200 people pack add community center pushing for answers and wanted to know if there is radio active dirt at the landfill. we've reported, the concern stemmed from a massive cleanup project at hunter's point naval ship yard in san francisco taking place between 2010 and 2016. now the county is calling for an independent investigation. >> we want to just be assured that there's no risk, and that all of the contaminated material if it was brought here, has been removed. >> if we think that the people did get exposed to this low-level radium 226 might have been in the soil, cancer is the
