your fry-day. i'm kris sanchez in for lauer rather beglauer -- laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. and a combination of what's expected heading into one. hottest days of the week expected to be on saturday. we have a bit of haze out there right now. i want to show you how quickly, though, our temperature trend will climb into the upper 80s. check it out. by the time you head out for lunch, already in the mid to upper 80s. by 12:00, 85. 1:00, 87 degrees in the south bay. not the hottest spot. temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s, but interior valleys are hitting triple digits. talk more about that heat advisory that is in effect through tomorrow at about 8:00 p.m. coming up in a bit. first, send it over to mike. >> and where are you?

commute, the fog, talk about that. a smooth drive across the bay bridge. word of a disabled vehicle around treasure island, tracking it. an easy drive and no extra backup at the bay bridge. just the bash lacash lanes. a smooth drive for the rest of contra costa county and the north bay as well. speed sensors are great all around the bay. we have seen no additional delays. san mateo bridge, a stalled vehicle. should not be a big problem at the high rise. back to you, kris. >> thank you. and breaking news this morning at 6:00. that massive fire that broke out in this building in downtown san jose overnight. our cameras were rolling as flames ripped through the building on west san carlos street. "today in the bay"s reporter is live on the scene since we came on the air at 4:30. roz, this is not the first time for a fire at that spot? >> reporter: no, at least they've been here and tell me at

least twice, the same area for a fire. cleared the scene. they were so worried. show you why earlier. that building, the gray part butting out part of a brand new apartment building under construction, and maybe it's about 20 feet or so away from where those flames were raging out of control earlier this morning. show you the video. firefighters say the building was -- what they were confronted with when they got here just after 2:00 this morning. flames shooting up some 30 feet through the roof of this abandoned building. they fought with ladder trucks and quickly called for a second alarnmics because they feared te flames might spread to the town homes behind where people were living and a brand new construction right next door. again, this was the second fire at least they've been to here. we're told it is a known site of a homeless encampment and don't know for sure what the cause of this fire was but have a team of

investigators coming here after daylight, and a little later this morning, to figure out what happened. as we get more details we'll bring to do you. for now, live for "today in the bay." >> thank you, roz. also following more breaking news for u.s. this morning. this is san francisco, a double shooting in the mission turns deadly. now, this is happened, or happened, actually, on harrison street. not far from the 24th street mission b.a.r.t. station or san francisco general. "today in the bay" is live for us at the scene. pizetizzete suratos has more. >> reporter: and around different parts of san francisco, sensors, notifying where this shooting take place on the 2700 block of harrison. since that last report, medical examiners leaving, take away the

body of the one victim who passed away but you still see police and detectives on the scene here where that shooting take place. we're looking at scene video not long ago when it happened. according to san francisco police, saying around 2:32 a.m. a shot spotter activation alert alerting them to the specific area where the shooting take place in this area and they found two people with gunshot wound injuries. one of the victims dies from the injuries, the other transported to san francisco general with life-threatening injurieinjurie. it is an active scene here. 2700 block of harrison. it's unclear when they'll clear this up. and we don't know if they're looking for a suspect or if a suspect is in custody. if you have information, contact san francisco police. >> thanks for the update. and it is 6:04 now and we take you to napa for a developing story. a man shot at office near

veterans memorial park. it happened around 5:30 yesterday evening. police say that man asked for two specific officers before he shot at officers. police then shot a bean bag round at the man, a non-lethal round. he was -- he then dropped his gun and was taken into custody. fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. and leaders say they have to do more to keep homeless people out of an area the city cleaned out earlier this year. if you live in san jose and drive the area you know there's a problem. caltrans conducted sweeps earlier this year. i was out there with them at the time. councilman cam wen says a new camp is already growing leading to problems like fires and illegal dumping. councilman wen plans to hold a news conference laters this morning. 6:05 now. the border battle far from over.

one immigration bill was voted down yesterday and house republicans delayed a vote on the second bill until next week. meantime, migrant families are stuck in limbo. "today in the bay's" reporter is live on the hill with breaking news. what have you found out? >> reporter: well, marcus, what's going on, we thought house republicans would spend the weekend hashing out a new immigration bill. the president has given their weekend back in a series of tweets the president is expressing that the gop should stop wasting its time. acknowledging they won't have votes on the immigration bill and should wait until after the midterms to try to tackle broader immigration reform and he responsibilities, meantime, to blame the democrats. the protests go on against president trump's immigration policy that's keeping families apart. while the president reversed his policy and won't separate

migrant children from parents crossing illegally into the u.s., he didn't address the thousands of children already separated. on capitol hill, republican lawmakers failed to pass immigration legislation. >> on this vote, yeahs, 193, nays, 231. the bill not passed. >> reporter: one voted down, another moved to next week. >> the president's going to like the new bill better than this bill. >> reporter: but the president is already blaming democrats. >> loopholes in our immigration laws supported by extremist open border democrats. it's a whole big con job. meantime, people are suffering because of the democrats. >> reporter: democrats want tighter borders but not this way. >> we don't think we have to put children in cages to do it. there is a better way. and the president is either not knowing, not caring, delusional, and in denial about his own policies. >> reporter: as lawmakers debate

and families wait, a new "time" magazine cover puts the family separation practice at the president's feet. and we should hear more about the president's position now when he makes immigration remarks later this afternoon. again, the president tweeting, congress should stop wasting its time. wait until after the midterm elections to tackle immigration reform when more republicans, he expects, will be onboard. >> example, we said earlier, susan. it changes day by day, minute by minute. >> throughout the day. can't walkway from your tv. thank you, susan. also happening, drafltravelo the border to protest forced separation of undocumented families. religious leaders travel to the area by bus, dozens more plan to drive themselves. a weekend of prayer and demonstration along the border near san diego. happening tomorrow, bay area

congre congresswoman and others among two dozen lawmakers visiting where detainees are being held in texas. get an up-close look at holding areas. texas lawmakers organized the tour. and online, nbcbayarea.com, an entire section dedicated to the crisis at the border and other immigration orders at top of people's minds right now. it is 6:09, and something that you need to look out for heading into today and in through the weekend is the spare the air alert that is in place for today and for tomorrow. north bay, expect moderate air quality. east bay and south bay the worst in terms of air quality. extremely unhealthy and the peninsula moderate. that means, limit outdoor exposure if possible. tracking a triple-digit heat heading into the weekend. another thing to look out for is that big game, padres at giants, playing tonight at at&t park.

first pitch at 7:15. if you're going to be hanging out around the ballpark before you head out to the game, look at temperatures in the city. 73 degrees by 4:00. then a decline into the 60s by the first pitch. at about 66 degrees. then expect nice, clear skies heading into the evening this afternoon. we are tracking some offshore winds heading into the later portion of the evening. go ahead and send things over to mike. >> vianey, it's friday. seeing lighter volume of traffic around the bay. metering lights on at the bay bridge and a backup. a bigger issue, might slow down the metering lights. tracking it a while. slowing building up. a disabled vehicle is approaching san francisco from west 80. commute direction. slow from about treasure island exit there getting in towards it's approach and the decline, tlak. there is a bridge crew and hopefully can clear it quickly. it's there been at least a half hour in total. and a lighter volume of traffic.

be at airports across the u.s., though it is just being unveiled at orlando international. facial recognition technology aimed at transforming the traveler experience. a screening system requires every passenger boarding an international flight or arriving on one to stand for a photo analyzed against on-file passport or visa photos. once matched, departing passengers board a flight without having to show further paperwork. some travelers already seem to like it. >> it's convenient. it's good -- i mean, i think it's definitely the way forward. it's much like a system that is smooth. >> and privaty experts say they are a little concerned the plam no formal room for handling that data. federal officials are working on the rules and refuse any privacy concerns. 6:15. in business and tech news, movie passes making major changes for you and you might not be happy about them. >> i'm not. for that and the rest of the

the north bay an area under the largest threat because of the dry northeasterly winds ranging between 10 to 20 miles per hour and also a red flag warning for areas near vallejo and the fairfield area and sacramento for saturday and sunday. this due to the elevated offshore winds between 26 to 30 miles per hour that start kicking up today. overnight tonight, also into early saturday morning. that mix with a combination of relatively low humidity keeps us on high alert over the weekend. the next seven days what to expect. saturday, the hottest day of the week so far. 1 103 degrees. hotter for interior valleys. cooling us off by as much as 10 to 15 degrees in areas later on. a close eye on the weekend. for now, over to mike. >> turn out, 20 degrees into the

i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. first heading to vianey arana, tracking triple digits we're expecting to see right here in the bay area. >> right. and a number of issues leading into tonight and saturday that could elevate or actually will elevate some fire dangers this weekend. a quick look at the 24-hour temperature change. running a few degrees warmer in spots. livermore, five degrees warmer. the north bay as well, five degrees warm are and temperatures expected to climb very quickly this afternoon. starting off already in the upper 50s and then by about 12:00, your lunch hour, in the 80s for san jose. by 2:00, upper 80s. the south bay is expected to climb into the 9 o0s but that's not the warmest or hottest spot. concord is expected to hit the triple digit mark. 93 degrees.

extremely hot. talking about heat risk associated with this. check on your neighbors and look out for your pets. over to mike. >> anybody in the car, don't leave them in the car, vianey. standard rule for any living human being. looking towards the bay bridge. fewer living things. these cars and people occupying them only in the fastrak and lanes off to the right. those to the left easing up. bring sunglasses. a big note for this shot. backup at the toll plaza and recovery on the san francisco side of the bay bridge. earlier stall cleared and remaining clear. a smooth, easy drive for this friday. things get congested mid-day. so far slowing towards hayward for the nimitz. back to you. breaking news out of san francisco. one person died, another person injured after a shooting in the mission. this happened around 2:30 this morning at harrison street between 23rd and 24th. we now know that shot spotter picks um the shooting and it's technology that detects when gunshots are fired.

when officers arrived they found two with gunshots wounds. one died at the scene. the other taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the scene isn't far from the 24th street b.a.r.t. station but no delays at this point. and a massive fire ripped through a building in downtown san jose. nuer west san carlos street. >> live at the scene, roz, now that the sun is up, we see how close it was to some of the other buildings. >> reporter: it was, indeed, very, very scary, and, in fact, that's what people in this neighborhood said they had been very worried about this all before. it's now gutted. you see what's left of it. not much. inside is gutted. people say they have been worried about this fire and what might happen with this building for some time. for months now. show you some video. just after 2:00 this morning, this is what it looked like.

30-foot flames shooting out of the roof of this abandoned building. people tell me it used to be a home of an awning company. and other fire crews were called to keep it under control. it's the site of a homeless encampment and a woman who lives across the street says it's the third fire in the last few months. >> people wanted the place torn down. it's been a problem. we have all of these people walking by all day long, and they cause problems. >> reporter: now, we were told that arson investigators will be here in the next hour and a half or so and it will be their job to determine what actually started this fire. meantime now, the restoration crew is that truck across the street there. they are standing by to board it up when they get the command to

do so. for now, we are live in san jose. for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, roz. and happening now, neighbors believe someone purposely set an early morning fire that started outside of a san jose home. this happened on barlow avenue not-from-far from interstate 680. an alert neighbor saw what was going on, banged on the door when the fire happened and helped those people inside get out. a neighbor tells us what he saw. >> as i was walking going south, towards this area, i seen a gentlemen running dressed in black and i know that he was an arsonist, man. he started the fire. i know he did. >> the firefighters were able to save the home, but the flames did damage two cars outside. they are not saying if they believe the fire was set on purpose. new this morning, if you live in eastern contra costa county maybe you felt it. a swarm of small earthquakes overnight. a 3.1 that hit about 12:40 this

morning centered just outside oakley. a smaller 2.8 rattled things more about five minutes later and a couple others as well. so far no reports of damage or injuries. and surprising, a new twist in the school controversy shaking up the south bay. that scandal involved san jose's school district which has been locked in a you power struggle involving the superintendent and trustees, tied to questionable construction deals. according to the "mercury news," a grand jury is asking three district trustees to resign. those grand jurors found they worked in a bloc to lock in shady deals with a construction company. grand jurors do not expect the trustees to willing will step down but all are up for re-election in november. an investigative unit follow-up. radioactive soil or not, what people in pittsburg want to know. our investigative unit did a report regarding potentially

contaminated dirt leaving hundreds in the naval shipyard winding up in a shaipyard in th east bay. people wanted to know if there is radioactive dirt at keller canyon landfill. we've been reporting, the concern stems from a massive cleanup project at naval shipyard in san francisco that happened between 2010 and 2016. now the county is calling for an independent investigation. >> we want to just be assured that there's no risk, and that all of the contaminated material if it was brought here, has been removed. >> if we think that the people did get exposed to this low level radium 226 that might have been in the soil, cancer is the primary concern. >> a navy spokesperson was transparent, about 218 tons of asphalt leaving hunter's point not properly screened for

radiation. they say that mistake, though, was caught on the same day. happening today, the next bus you take may not have any driver at all. >> what? >> there's a catch, or two, here. namingly, the bus you take would have to be one of the ones being tested today in dublin at the dublin plerchstasanton b.a.r.t. station. one of a fleet of buses expected to roll out thanks to the livermore transit authority. the buses actually made their debut in bishop ranch last year. since then the agency has been testing more of them in the surrounding areas. >> they're kind of cute. look like the trams at disneyland. speaking of disneyland, disney world, disney california is kicking off with pixar. the coaster opens in honorinved- incredibles" made right here.

replacing the screaming coaster. if you've been recently you probably already saw a if new pixar pier. four new imaginative neighborhoods with entertainment, food and drinks. and kids love california screaming! guess we have to see how that is over there and also get a discount at universal from what i understand. and san jose a smooth drive northbound. no problem. it is friday. what wehere, discounted traffic. southbound 101, no slowing still. still have debris reported off dumbarton bridge, bay front, matter to university area. near facebook. no problems reported. a lighter flow of traffic we talked about all around the bay including towards the bay bridge. backup at the toll plaza because it's the bay bridge toll plaza. can't even escape that on the weekends. light traffic on the approach. >> yeah. a weekend.

>> there we go. yeah. >> heard that. >> tracking all that weather. >> yes. >> going to be a warm one out there, too. >> it is. i figured i'd show you cooler spots to get a head start on the weekend. you know? but before we do that, i want to show you what we are expecting in the bay area, because this is going to remain at least through saturday, a high fire danger. talking heat advisory in effect through 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. triple-digit heat tomorrow. tomorrow is expected to be the hottest day so far of summer. so i know it just started. this is kind of giving a sneak peek what to expect this summer. napa, one of the hotter spots, but if you have plans to head up there, i want to show you the temperature trend. by 2:00 to 3:00, temperatures already be at about 101 to 102. now, this is going into the category of dangerous heat. keep in mind that alert will be in place through tomorrow but one area that will be a great location to head to will be the coastline. half moon bay remains into the upper 60s.

here are the top stories on today well, the time now, 6:54. welcome back. top stories -- a live look in san francisco. not much left of an abandoned building that erupted into flames early this morning. started a little after 2:00 in downtown san jose. you can see flames shooting about 30 feet into the air. neighbors say it used to house an awning company. more recently according to firefighters, it has been a known homeless encampment. no word on a cause just yet. and following breaking news in san francisco. one person died and another sent positive the hospital after a shooting in the mission. it happened around 2:30 this morning on harrison street

between 23rd and 24th. police say that shot spotter technology in the area detected the sound of the gunshots and when officers arrived they found two people with wounds. one died at the scene. the other is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. that scene isn't far from the 24th street mission at the b.a.r.t. station, but no impact there this morning. and a man is in custody this morning accused of shooting at officers near veterans memorial park in napa. this happened around 5:30 yesterday evening and police say they asked for two specific officers and then opened fire. police shot a bean bag round at that man, who dropped the gun and then was taken into custody. no one was seriously injured. and some south bay leaders say they have to do something more to keep homeless people out of areas they've already cleared out earlier this year. in san jose, there's a problem with home less enkamptment where highway 101 meets story road pap big, vast area there.

caltrans conducted sweeps cleaning out the area spending about $1 million on it too. city council member says a new camp is already growing there and leading to problems like fires and illegal dumping. the immigration debate is heating up. bay area clergy members, traveling to the border today to protest the forced separation of undocumented families. about 40 religious and communities leaders about about to take off on a bus and dozens of others will drive separately. the caravan leaves in about four minutes. starts at 7:00, and plan to hold a weekend of prayer and demonstration along the border near san diego. political leaders will do something similar tomorrow. bay area congresswoman barbara lee and jackie speier among two dozen lawmakers visiting facilities where detainees are held in texas getting an up-close look at those holding
