keeping track. those kids have been on the sidewalk. a bunch were sleeping there yesterday. they're here today. it's going to be a big concert. >> they have a little more time to wait. we have to start with the news. we begin with the immigration crisis. reaction is pouring in on the first lady's surprise trip to the facilities housing migrant children. this as the president's order to now keep migrant families together is causing chaos at the border and on capitol hill. we have it covered for you this morning. we start with peter alexander at the white house for us. peter, good morning. >> reporter: more chaos, more confusion, as the trump administration tries to roll back that widely-rejected policy, separating children from their parents. even as a senior homeland security official tells nbc news, that 500 of the children have been reunited since may, the pentagon has been tasked to draw up plans to house up to

20,000 more migrant children on military bases, beginning as early as july next month. all of this, as the first lady gets a firsthand look at this crisis. this morning, a mother's mission. melania trump fresh off an unannounced trip to the border, visiting a temporary shelter for migrant children separated from their parents. >> i also would like to ask you how i can help to these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible. >> reporter: the first lady and the president on separate tracks. mrs. trump deploying herself as america's secretary of compassion. her husband hosting his cabinet, hammering home his hard-line approach. >> if we took zero tolerance away, you would be overrun -- you would have millions of people pouring through our border. >> reporter: president trump both inviting democrats to the white house and bashing them. >> they're extremist open-border

democrats. it's a whole big con job. >> reporter: accusing them of demanding high-end shelters but refusing to pay. >> they want us to take care of bed space and resources. like let's run the most luxurious hotel in the world for everybody. >> reporter: still unclear how to reunite those 2300 plus children with their parents. >> if you look zero tolerance away, everybody would come -- right now, they would be getting their little belongings, unfortunately, and they would be heading up. you would be -- you would have a run on this country the likes of which nobody has ever seen. >> reporter: attorney general jeff sessions insisting the trump administration didn't plan on splitting up families. >> the american people don't like the idea that we're separating families. we never really intended to do that. >> reporter: but sessions' own words delivered last month contradict that. >> if you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you. and that child may be separated from you as required by law. >> reporter: as for the first

lady's trip -- >> i want to thank you for your hard work. >> reporter: her office saying it was her decision, she told her husband, i'm headed down to texas. insisting she wanted a realistic view. >> they don't know where they're at. >> reporter: the firspending ti children with no cameras present. mrs. trump drawing attention, not only for her message, but the graffiti-style words across her back boarding for the border. that cargo jacket reads, i really don't care, do you? her spokesperson criticizing reporters for asking about it. tweeting #shecares. adding, there was no hidden message. but the president saw one, tweeting that it's a reference to the fake news media. melania knows how dishonest they are and she no longer cares. >> there's a long history of looking at first ladies and trying to interpret what they wear and criticize. in this case, there was a message. it was written in black and white on the back of the jacket. what do we know about what she was trying to say? the president said she was

trying to go after the media. >> reporter: i think honestly, savannah, nobody knows what to make of it. but speak to anybody who knows melania trump and they will tell you nothing the former model does is accidental. i reached out to her office to see if they have additional comment, responding to the president's explanation of that message. they have said nothing more. one interesting note, after the controversy erupted, blowing up on twitter as you likely saw, melania trump put the jacket back on just in time for the cameras when she returned here to washington, d.c. back to you. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. in the wake of the president's executive order, officials are struggling to reunite the roughly 2,000 migrant children who have been separated from their parents. gabe gutierrez is in mcallen, texas, with more on that and a look inside those shelters. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. this is the children's shelter the first lady toured behind me. authorities say the children typically spend around 45 days

here. 45 days. now, we're hearing from some of the mothers in detention right now. overnight, an emotional reunion, an undocumented immigrant from guatemala, seeing her son for the first time after she sued the justice department to get him back. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: now, mounting questions about the future of some 2,000 migrant children still in limbo without their parents. we spoke with several mothers in one detention center by phone. this woman says she is desperate to hear from her 9-year-old son. she says that authorities had told her she was only going to be separated from her son for 48 hours. it's now been nine days and she has no idea where he is. how does the government keep track of the children? that responsibility falls to a previously little-known agency, the office of refugee

resettlement. part of the department of health and human services. for years, o.r.r. handled kids who crossed into the u.s. alone. but after the trump administration's 0 tolerance crackdown, the agency started to take care of separated kids as adult family members were prosecuted. how can parents find their children? they are handed this flyer, with phone numbers to call. >> thank you for calling the i.c.e. reporting line. >> reporter: o.r.r. has places like this across the country operated by nonprofit groups that our cameras have not been allowed inside. as the first lady toured one in texas, she had this question. >> how many times do they speak with their relatives or families per week, for example? >> the children are allowed to communicate with their family twice a week. >> reporter: this woman hasn't communicated with her teenage son in nine days. i need to hear his voice, she

says. there are many desperate mothers here. that woman tells us that she was overjoyed when she first heard about pruesident trump's executive order. but now, she just quickly wants to be reunited with her child. hoda and savannah, just imagine, not being able to hear from your child or know where they are for nine days. >> all right, gabe. thank you. craig is just back from the border. obviously covered it all week. it's one thing to talk about a story from afar, as we have been. it's another thing to be there and talk to all sides of the issue. >> it's one of the situations where you have the finger-pointing in washington and the rhetoric and policy discussions. and you get down there and talk to people along the border, very confused, very anxious. not just the parents who have been separated from their children, but the people that work with them and the advocates. there's an overarching confusion that continues to persist there. here's the other part of it, though. there are a lot of people, especially in this part of the

country, who really feel like and who said to me, we got to do something. whatever we're doing isn't working. we have to do something, even if this isn't it. >> while you were down there the president signed the executive order. did you feel palpably like something changing down there? >> no. no. here's the thing. we went to a vigil on wednesday night, this march. people knew the president had signed the executive order, reversing course, doing something he said initially he could not do. they knew he signed it. they don't trust the administration. people on both sides of the aisle said to me, at least, they're very suspicious of the administration's approach. think about it. they said one thing for a number of weeks. all of a sudden, they were saying something else. the folks down there, that's the thing i feel like has gotten lost in all of this. they're very confused. >> i'm curious. i grew up near the border in arizona. there are people who live along the border who have been dealing with the problem of illegal immigration for decades.

how do they -- obviously, as you said, they feel there's got to be a fix. how did they feel about this fix and the fact that families were separated? >> wherever you are on the spectrum of solutions, at least the folks that i talked to, no one, literally, not one person, thought this was the way to go about doing it. that's the dilemma. it's one of those situation where people will readily admit, especially along the border that there's a problem. we have to do something to fix what's happening there. no one thought this was a solution. there was a guy who flew down, from brooklyn. his name was josh. josh ruben was his name. he flew down on wednesday. watching the coverage. flew down just to protest, just to go to this vigil. there he is right there. that's a really cool hat. he said to me, this is going to be, in his opinion, one of the defining issues of our time. this is something, like you said, this is something we've been dealing with for 20 or 30 years. and there's no sign this is something we're not going to be dealing with for 20 years from

now. >> over to you, washington. do something about it. craig, thank you. good to have you back home. meantime, it was another night of protests in and around pittsburgh over that deadly police shooting of an unarmed high school student. ron mott joins us with that. hey, ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. protesters hit the road overnight, shutting down interstate 376 in both directions for a number of hours. they protested outside the police department here. shut down an intersection behind me. they said they want answers sooner rather than later. authorities are asking everyone for patience. [ chanting ] >> reporter: this morning, pittsburgh on-edge. >> we do this for antwon. >> reporter: protesters taking to the streets, outraged by the shooting death of a teenager, 17-year-old antwon rose. >> they're shooting at them. >> reporter: gunned down by an

east pittsburgh cop, a shooting caught on cell phone video. police say the car matched the description of a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting moments before, finding two guns inside. they said antwon was not armed when he was shot. lee merritt says he represents the family. >> it's difficult to understand the set of circumstances that would warrant deadly force in that situation. >> reporter: a diverse crowd numbering in the hundreds gathered outside the allegheny county courthouse, demanding justice. >> we need to have action. this cannot just go away. there has to be something done. >> we have to take a stand. nothing is going to change if we don't stand up. >> reporter: authorities have not identified the officer who shot antwon. he's been placed on leave, as the allegheny county police department moves forward with the investigation. late thursday, the borough of east pittsburgh issued a statement, writing in part, this is a tragic loss. we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to mr. rose's family and friends. we are seeking truth and answers

but the process takes time. protesters rallied for a second straight night in east pittsburgh near the shooting scene. >> register you right now. >> reporter: demonstrators vowing to keep calling for answers until they come. >> when do we want it? now. >> reporter: a visitation is set for sunday with a funeral planned on monday. and the attorney, lee merritt, he says, they may have to change the location because they're expecting a large crowd coming to pay their respects. >> ron mott, ron, thank you. now, to historic change on the roads. here in the u.s. we don't think twice about hopping in a car and taking a drive. but this weekend for the very first time, women in saudi arabia will be able to do the same. nbc's kelly cobiella in riyadh with a culture shift. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. saudi arabia, the only country in the world that still bans women from driving. well, that all ends on sunday,

when women here, finally, get to hit the road on their own. this woman never thought she would find herself here, at a driving school in her home country. and at the wheel. >> very excited because we wait this moment for a long time. >> reporter: she's one of the first women ever to get a driver's license in saudi arabia. after decades of taking a backseat to men in this ultraconservative kingdom, told how to dress, where to work and by some they were too stupid to drive. women are flooding schools like this one by the thousands. the waiting list, months long. >> the second i heard that, we're going to drive, sign me up. even if i don't go anywhere, just having that feeling of, i could if i wanted to. >> reporter: the landmark shift expected to put more than 6 million new drivers on the road. part of the crown prince's plan to modernize the kingdom. with more women in work, movie

theaters reopening, men and women socializing out in the open. not everyone agrees with the changes here. but polls have shown nearly 80% of saudis, both women and men, believe that women should have the right to drive. >> are able to do more things on their own, which is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: saudi women still need permission from a man to get a passport, travel abroad, get married. and some of the women activists that pushed for driving rights are now under arrest. "vogue" slammed for putting a saudi princess on the cover while campaigners are locked up. women here say they do want more. but for now -- you're about to get behind the wheel for the first time. what do you think is going to be going through your mind? >> just don't hit anything. >> reporter: the focus is on the road. >> kelly, you're there. does it feel like a massive sea change there?

"the connors" will debut this fall, featuring original cast members. abc, says barr, will have no financial or creative

involvement in the spin-off. barr releasing a statement thursday, saying she agreed to a settlement, often referred to as go-away money, to save the jobs of the cast and crew. i regret the circumstances that have caused me to be reproved from "roseanne." i agreed to the settlement so 200 jobs can be saved. and i wish the best for everyone involved. abc pulling the plug last month on the hit revival of "roseanne." >> here's some dressing for the table. >> oh, look, dan. russian. >> reporter: just hours after barr, the show's star and co-creator, posted racist comments online about valerie jarre jarrett, an african-american woman who served as a senior adviser to president obama. barr comparing je ining jarrett ape. abc calling the tweet abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values. barr apologized, insisting she
